6. Basic Coordinate System
• The geographical coordinate system
employing latitude and longitude, can be
traced to the 2nd century B.C. The
geographical coordinate system is the
primary location reference system for the
earth.
10. Latitude:
Angular distance north or
south of equator.
Parallel of latitude:
An imaginary line
Drawn round the earth parallel to the
equator and at a constant angular
distance from it.
15. Longitude:
Angular distance east or
west of Prime Meridian.
Meridians of longitude:
One of the lines
of longitudes which link the north
pole to south pole and cut the
equator at right angles
