2. Material are used in Gears
Gears can be made of all sorts of materials, including many types of
steel, brass, bronze, cast iron, ductile iron, aluminum, powdered
metals, and plastics. Steel is the most common material overall,
although over the years, we’ve worked with all of the material types
mentioned.
4. Steel
The most widely used material in gear manufacture is steel. Almost
all types of steels have been used for this purpose. It having property
of toughness and tooth hardness, steel gears are heat treated
• BHN <350-Light and medium duty drives
• BHN >350-heavy duty drives
5. Steel is often most desirable because it offers a winning combination
of high strength-to-weight ratio, high resistance to wear, the ability to
enhance the physical properties through heat treatment, and
competitive pricing.
6. Gear steels may be divided into two general
classess
1. Plain carbon and
2. Alloy steels
7. Plain carbon steel
Plain carbon steels or heat-treated alloy steels are: Does the service
condition or design require the superior characteristics of the alloy
steels, or, if alloy steels are not required, will the advantages to be
derived offset the
8. Alloy steel
Alloy steels are used to some extent in the industrial field, but heat-
treated plain carbon steels are far more common. The use of
untreated alloy steels for gears is seldom, if ever, justified, and then,
only when heat-treating facilities are lacking
