2. What age range do you believe you fit
into?
Results from my Survey Monkey
This image is connoting a pie chart showing the age ranges that answered my questionnaire. You can see the majority I
asked were in the age range of 14-18, this was probably because I am in high school and they are an easy audience to get
hold of, but this could also mean in relevance to my music magazine, teenagers growing up to be old adults may enjoy
listening to rap/hip-hop music (my magazine of inspiration is XXL Magazine).
3. How often do you read magazines?
From my results we can gather that the people that answered my questionnaire were either
never reading magazines or reading them monthly. I then decided to conclude to make PULSE
magazine a monthly magazine, like my magazine of inspiration; XXL Magazine. As their target
audience ranges from teenagers to adults, I will do the same for PULSE magazine, to try and get
my magazine to stretch to being the most successful it can be, and hopefully I will get more
readers for my magazine. Production wise it is also easier to have a monthly magazine.
4. What would you expect to find on the
cover of a Hip-Hop/Rap magazine?
This is portraying that majority of
the people that asked expect to
see images of a specific genres’
artists to be on the cover of the
magazine, this makes me plan my
front cover of PULSE to have a
unique artist (Star Appeal –
Richard Dyer) and of course make
sure it contains story (cover lines)
so when you see my front cover
you will know what it will have
inside, which could lead to them
opening my magazine and even
buying it. Also as the main subject
is music, its obvious that people
will believe musical symbols and
imagery is required.
5. What do you think is the most
important information on the cover
of a Hip-Hop/Rap magazine?
I believe that with cover lines on my front
cover I will make my magazine have vital
information and give a good preview of
what’s inside for the readers to see. One
person wouldn’t want to buy a magazine
where they are unaware of any subjects
that’s in the magazine. Other conventions
like large fonts may not be very relevant, or
important, people may prefer quantity of
how much is in the magazine so it is worth
their money, so I will make sure PULSE MAG
reveals this effectively.
6. What conventions do you think
attract the attentions of an audience
most effectively? WHY?
This answer is probably the
most helpful and from this I
have connoted that if I have a
freebie, I could gain someone
to buy my magazine, however,
as I am basing my magazine on
XXL – young adults that listen
to rap wont be bothered
about gaining a freebie.
From these answers
and my own individual
research I will consider
including interviews,
images, cover lines and
gossip exclusives etc.
7. What promotions/offers or
competitions would most appeal to
fans of a Hip-Hop/Rap magazine?
Half of the people that answered my
survey monkey believe that if I have a
puff promotion saying WIN concert
tickets it would most likely appeal to
fans of a hip-hop/rap magazine. If you
notice all of the people that answered
chose a question which refers to
concerts. So this concludes to me this is
something I am going to consider
regarding that on PULSE magazine.
8. Is the 'Star Appeal' (Richard Dyer)
important in selling a magazine?
State Yes/No and explain why.
7/9 people that answered this question chose YES.
This means my star appeal is very important to
consider when I start to create PULSE magazine.
9. What would you expect a double
page interview to focus on in a Hip-
Hop/Rap magazine? You may tick
more than one.
As I chose a check
box it is hard to
conclude what the
most important ones
will be for PULSE
magazine. The
highest however was
‘Questions from the
interviewer and full
depth answers’ so
when I have my
interview with ‘c0d’ I
will make sure we get
some very detailed
answers for PULSE
Magazine.
10. What is your age?

Under 13 13-18 19-25 Over 26
Results from my own primary research
Out of the 10 people that answered only one was under 13, the rest were from the age range of
being over 26 to being 13-18, so personally I believe this is a good balance of age ranges to have
that will actually help me with my primary research for Hip-Hop/Rap magazines, also for PULSE.
11. How much would you be willing to spend
on one issue of a music magazine?
6
3
1 0
£1.00 - £2.00 £3.10 - £5.00 £3.10 - £5.00 Over £5.10
As some people believe magazines are just pieces of paper, this could be the reason why people
that answered are only willing to pay £1-£2. However if you are a famous music magazine like
XXL it is believed to be acceptable to put the price up to £4, so maybe I could do this for PULSE
magazine as well.
12. What is the best way to advertise a
music magazine?

Radio Adverts TV Adverts YouTube Adverts Other
I found that asking this question was very helpful, as if PULSE magazine was a real business, I
would conclude to use YouTube or television adverts to present my magazine. This makes me
feel that above the line advertising is better for magazines like PULSE as it can attract a mass
audience, not just one particular one, this is key for my magazine as my target audience aims
for teenagers to young adults interested in rap.
13. Would you buy an issue of a music
magazine because it has your
favourite singer on the front cover?
6
4
Yes No
Out of the 10 people that answered this question, over half said YES to buying a magazine if it
had their favourite singer on the cover, this makes me think that I need to make sure my star
appeal (Richard Dyer) is an effective artist and will attract the audience, and hopefully make
them buy the magazine.
14. Would you buy a subscription with a
monthly music magazine?
3
7
Yes No
From this, I can account that 70% of people would not buy a subscription with a monthly
music magazine. This makes me decide that I wont contain one for PULSE magazine, and
financially this will actually help me as if I did, only 30% would buy one, so it would be a
waste of time.
15. What is the most important part of a
music magazine front cover?
3
4
2
1
The singer/band on the front page The articles The main article The price
This really helped me consider what to put on my music magazine. The majority stated that the
articles would be the most important part on a magazine cover, so I aimed to try and get loads
of cover lines on the story and I tried to make it look appealing to my audience. The second
most important feature was the singer on the front page, so I tried to make COD unique and
give the usual rapper a twist so from the main star appeal (Richard Dyer), my audience can
gather an idea of the headline.
16. Would you enter a competition in a
music magazine?
6
4
Yes No
From this 60% of the people said ‘Yes’ to answering if they would enter a competition in a music
magazine. This makes me consider whether I should have one for PULSE magazine and present it
as a puff promotion. However, considering this I have to keep my magazine related with my
magazine of inspiration; XXL. I haven’t seen one example with any competitions but only a puff
promotion promoting XXL, so maybe I could do this with PULSE.
17. Would you rather buy a weekly or a
monthly music magazine?
55
Weekly Monthly
Here it is a 50/50 tie. So I decided to make PULSE magazine a monthly magazine like my
magazine of inspiration; XXL.
18. Preview and Evidence of someone
answering my questionnaire.
