2. Networking
•A network is created by
connecting two or more
computers using cables
or wireless devices.
•A device such as a
printer may also be part
of the network.
3. •The most common medium used
to connect computers is the
ethernet cable.
• It is connected to the network
adapter (Network Interface
Controller or NIC) of each
computer.
4. •The ethernet cable is
commonly known as the LAN
(Local Area Network) cable
while the network adapter is
the LAN card.
•The Ethernet is a networking
standard commonly used today.
9. For computers or devices to
successfully communicate with
each other, a set of rules or
standards is followed. Such is
called a protocol. Simply put, it
is a set of rules on how to
format and read data.
10. •Types of Networks – a network
may be classified based on its
coverage and availability. The most
common classifications are as
follows:
•Local Area Network (LAN) – a
network limited to a room or
building.
11. •Campus Area Network (CAN) – a
network composed of two or more
connected LANs but is limited to a
school campus or other similar setup.
•Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) – a
network composed of two or more
LANs or CANs but is limited within a
town, city, or metropolitan.
12. •Wide Area Network (WAN) – a network
covering a wide geographical area that is
beyond the metropolitan, regional, or national
coverage. Such networks use routers and
public communication links.
•Internetwork – a network composed of two or
more networks using devices such as a switch
or router. Basically, any network connected
together by a switch or router is called an
internetwork.
13. •Intranet – an internetwork
limited to the use of a single
organization.
•Extranet – a network or intra-
network limited to the use of a
single organization but with some
of its resources exposed to
14. A router is a specialized
computer needed to
connect a network to the
Internet. It connects the
network to another and
directs traffic of messages
or data packets in order to
make sure that data is
transmitted and received
correctly by the recipient
15. IP stands for Internet
Protocol, the language or
protocol used by computers
to communicate over the
Internet.
16. •The Domain Name System
IP address were used to connect to a
computer or website in the early days.
This became unacceptable after the
Internet had grown. The solution was
to map or link the IP address to names
maintained by the Network
Information Center
17. •Some of the top-level or first-level domains
are:
•.COM – used by commercial organizations
•.ORG – used by nonprofit organizations
•.EDU – used by educational institutions
•.GOV – used by government institutions
•.INT – used by international entities
•.MIL – used by military organizations
•.NET – used by network backbone systems and
19. Is also known as WWW or the
Web. It is a collection of
interlinked documents called
hypertext in the Internet using a
web browser.
20. •Web document – is any document made
available via the web that is downloaded
instead of being displayed in a web browser.
•Website – is a collection of interrelated and
interlinked web pages.
•The protocol used to download web pages
and documents is the Hypertext Transfer
Protocol or HTTP.
