•Basic of computer networks
•Types of network
•Comparison of network
What is Network ?
• In case of computer , when one computer wants to
communicate with other computer. It is required one
secured connection between them.so the above
scenario is called Network between computers.
• The secured connection means communicate the
authenticated by computers in network.
• So,In one way ,we can say networks is group of
connection between computers.
Types of Networks :-
• There are three types of networks :
1. LAN
2. MAN
3. WAN
LAN [ Local area network] :
• It is a very basic network with small connection between computers.
• LAN is an important concept of WAN.
• The LAN enable a station to communicate directly using physical cable
or physical medium for point-to-point connection without any
intermediate media.
• LAN is working with connection oriented communication means
physical connection is required for LAN.
• LAN is system composed to the computers with hardware &
transmission media.
• Is fast , with speeds from 10 Mbps to 10 Gbps.
• There are Three characteristic of LAN :
1. Topology
2. Protocols
3. Media
• Topology :It is geometric arrangement of devices in
networks.
for ex : if more than two computers are arranged with
single transmission medium.so it is called as
BUS Topology.
• There are different Topology in a LAN are linked
together :
1.BUS Topology
2.STAR Topology
3.RING Topology
4.MESH Topology
5.HYBRID Topology
PROTOCOLS :
• The rules of encoding specification for sending any information in network.
• Every LAN uses a protocol – a set of rules that governs how packets are
configured and transmitted.
MEDIA :
• In network devices are connected with each other by different media like
twisted pair cables , co-axial cables & fiber optic cables.
• Some network do without connecting with each other is called radio wave
media or wireless media.
MAN [Metropolienton area network] :
• MAN usually falls between LAN & WAN. It is generally apply to connect
geo-graphically spread lance.
• There for the goal of MAN is to develop communication link between
to Independence LANs.
• MAN is establish by using optical fiber. The network is established using
ROUTER & SWITCH is a part which is actively handling filtration of data.
Any switch is working has one node and router acts like point-to-point
node.
• Router helps the data packet to identify the path from source to
destination. MAN is usually operated over area up to 50km.
• The use of MAN network is Digital cable television ,Used in government
agencies &University campuses.
ADVANTAGES :
• Less expensive
• Sending local emails
• High speed than WAN
• Sharing of the internet
• Conversion from LAN to MAN is easy
• High Security
DISADVANTAGES :
• Difficult to manage
• Internet speed difference
• Hackers attack
• Technical people required to set up
• More wires required:
WAN [ Wide area network] :
• It is a network that exist over a large scale geo-graphical area network.
• WAN includes smaller networks like MAN & LAN.
• When WAN is established one location which contains MAN is
communicating MAN is communicating with other location.
• The Internet of WAN is provided by ISP or IPS.
• The world’s most popular WAN is the Internet.
• Multiple LANs can be connected together using devices such as bridges ,
routers or gateways which enable them to share data.
ADVANTAGES :
• Centralizes IT infrastructure
• Boosts your privacy
• Increases bandwidth
• Eliminates Need for ISDN
• Guaranteed uptime
• Cuts costs, increase profits
DISADVANTAGES :
• High setup costs
• Security Concerns
• Maintenance Issues

Meaning A network that connects a
group of computers in a
small geographical area.
It covers relatively large
region such as cities, towns.
It spans large locality and
connects countries
together. Example Internet.
