Main area of activity:
I am going to be working in both Audio and Video.
Rationale:
Over the past 2 years I have enjoyed working in video formats editing videos and in
programmes such as premier pro and I have also enjoyed writing and creating scripts for
projects such as my audio play. I loved the process of collecting sounds from around me
and adding them to my audio recordings, and this interest will help me keep motivated
throughout the project, knowing I am doing something I enjoy. My most recent and similar
production is my audio project I named Grace, a ghost story about a blind woman making
friends with someone she assumed was a neighbour, however, wasin fact the ghost of a
dead woman. This project helped me become acquainted with Adobe Audition, and the
practice of creating a simple score and helping me understand further the process of
creating audio plays. I think an audio play will work well for this project, as due to covid, I
can alwaysfind ways for people to record themselves alone.
Project Concept:
The concept of my project is to explore how it would have felt to be coming of age during
Margaret Thatcher’s time as prime minister, especially when you are growing up and
experimenting with your sexuality and ideas of masculinity, femininity, transvestism, and
how the strong ideals Thatcher was imposing effected those feelings. I would like to look
closely at mental health of the young men and women at the time were affected by the mass
unemployment of the 80s, but how musicians such as Boy George, part of the new gender
bender phase, was a comfort to so many kids and young adults trying to figure out who
they are.
To make this project, I will need to research into the events of the 80s, particularly the
privatisation of industry and the effect that had on the people and the idea of masculinity, I
will need to research and maybe even talk to some people who are trans or transvestites to
understand their experiencesfrom a primary point of view. I will need to look closer into the
“gender bender phase” as well asthe people that came before, and of course I will need to
round it off by linking back to Grayson Perry’s Pre-Therapy Years work.
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
I will evaluate my project in a few different ways. Throughout the research and pre-production
stages, I will make weekly reflections and write about information I have collected, progress I have
made and what I will move onto in the next stage. I also will record myself talking about my
progress that week/stage and add it to my reflection section. When I start creating more in
practical work and make more progress than if I was just researching, I plan on shooting behind
the scenes footage as well as the weekly/daily reflections and show visually how I am progressing.
Once I have completed the project, I will evaluate my work and go into more details of what I have
done and how successful each section of the project has been, and possibly record a longer more
visual vlog to show each stage.
