The document summarizes initial research and planning for an audio story project about the Mothman cryptid. Key points include:
- Research into existing audio dramas found that added sound effects helped listeners feel more involved. This will be mimicked in the production.
- Narration format was selected due to lack of performers, but voices will be differentiated through narrator's voice acting.
- The story selected is about the Mothman, allowing attempts to include its noises and sounds.
- Further research is needed on acquiring and creating appropriate sound effects for actions like the Mothman moving and the narrator panicking.
2. Initial Responses and Idea Generation
Log your initial thoughts regarding the set brief in this document
What stories could you use? How do you feel about the different potential
formats? What are the positives about this project? What could be some difficult
aspects? Etc
Use the format on this document to guide this response – some are set as a
question on one slide, but you should look to add further slides as necessary
3. Which stories have you
researched and looked like
potential starting points?
4. Which research into existing products has been the
most useful? Includes examples and explanations
• A piece of cake had plenty of added sound effects to make the listener feel
more involved and like they were part of the scene.
• I will try mimic this in my production to make the listener feel more
involved and be able to imagine it more easily.
5. Which production format [drama, narration,
etc] do you feel fits your idea best and why?
• Probably narration because I don’t have lots of performers at my disposal
so wouldn’t have many voices to chose from.
• However I could use my own voice but in different ways to make it seem
like different people and could mix the drama with the narration to make
something in-between.
6. Which story have you settled on and why?
Mothman because I could possibly try include the Mothman in the audio
with the narrator and other voices. The Mothman wouldn’t have to make
any real noises like speaking but would probably just make general moving
and living noises or include it making scary noises to add creepiness to the
Mothman.
7. If you had to sell your story quickly, what is the
title and the logline?
The title/ logline could be “Actual encounter with the fabled Mothman”, “we
came face to face with the Mothman” or “Mothman is real!”
8. What ideas have you had for sound effects,
narration and storytelling?
Sound effects would be of the Mothman making general noises such as
moving, breathing, scratching, groaning, flapping, fidgeting etc.
The narration and story telling could be of a person in a booth on radio
talking about general news and ends up talking about Mothman, they say
that they don’t believe in the rumours surrounding Mothman and the
incidents he has cause, of course the man ends up having an encounter with
Mothman and then talks about it a lot on the radio but is then perceived as
crazy because of his sudden switch in belief.
9. Initial feelings…how do you feel about the
project currently?
• I am finding the research difficult as I didn’t know what an audio drama
was and so I might have researched incorrectly, the research is still helpful
to me and gives me ideas but isn’t exactly about radio drama.
• However I think I have an idea in my head about what I want to do and
now I have a bit more of an understanding of what a radio drama is and so
an idea of what I can do.
10. What other research do you think you need to
do?
• Probably should do some research on what some noises sound like and
how I can acquire them or create them myself for the sound effects, this
would include the noise of the Mothman and anything the voice actor
would physically do such as scrambling and heavily breathing/ being
panicked.
Editor's Notes
Think about creative and technical elements, it could be you like the idea of evoking a sense of place or you have the perfect person in mind as a narrator? Or are you keen to start writing a story and take it from there? Ideas and development are personal, try and get across where your idea is and what has got you to that point.
Add as many slides as needed from the work you did on Urban Legends, York Ghost stories and other inspirations you have considered. Which story have you gravitated toward and why?
Think about why this idea rather than any other…is it because it has the best scope for sfx, narration, etc. Reasons can be personal, but you need explain them.
A logline is a one sentence description or summary of the audio story. Loglines distill the important elements of your script/story—main character, setup, central conflict, antagonist—into a clear, concise teaser. The goal is to write a logline so enticing that it hooks the listener into your idea

Consider pros and cons here, what are you excited about, what is a worry…
This could be audio recording, post-production, getting cast/narrator, etc…it might be just organising your idea into a workable project…
