2. What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
■ In simple terms, a media institution is a business/firm that produce and distribute
varying forms of media products,
The media institutions that might distribute my magazine include:
• IPC Media (NME)
• Republic of Music Ltd. (CLASH)
• Bauer Media Group (Kerrang!)
• Prometheus Global Media (Billboard)
• Freeway Press (Rock Sound)
3. IPC Media
■ One of the top media institutions in the UK.
■ Respected and widely known publisher – its publications have around 26 million adult
readers.
■ Able to provide a wider range of advertising opportunities due to their status as a
widely known company.
Why would IPC Media be interested in distributing my magazine?
■ As my magazine has similar aspects to NME (masthead to the top left, simple photo)
and has a very similar target audience to mine, I feel like they could take the same
steps they do with NME and apply them to mine
■ The majority of NME’s readership is male (69% to be exact) so my magazine could
appeal to their already devoted fanbase, and also encompasses another genre of
music.
4. Republic Of Music Ltd.
■ Although their work is mainly centred around the distribution of music, they are
involved in distributing CLASH magazine.
■ Unlike the other media institutions, Republic of Music is a relatively small distribution
company working in Brighton.
■ Their small scale of distribution attracts a niche audience, much like mine.
Why would Republic of Music be interested in distributing my magazine?
■ The genres presented in CLASH and my magazine are different but have an overlap.
This means that my magazine would attract both CLASH readers and new readers.
■ Putting out another printed media product would bring in more income from our
similar target audiences.
■ A new magazine means a new advertising opportunity, which they could use to exploit
the connection between the music and magazines they distribute.
5. Bauer Media Group
■ European publisher that owns the rights to over 400 digital products, 50 radio stations
and 600 magazines – Kerrang! and Q included, giving them a British and European
audience.
■ Q mainly covers big-name popular music while Kerrang! covers punk/rock music.
Why would Bauer Media Group be interested in distributing my magazine?
■ As Q and Kerrang! cover the bigger names in the music industry, my magazine would
help it cover the lesser-known artists and bands; thus giving it a larger readership from
people interested in new yet undiscovered music.
■ Kerrang! and Q are mainly marketed towards females, and my magazine slightly leans
in favour of males so distributing mine would start to balance out the gender gap.
6. Prometheus Global Media
■ Leading distributor in the United States, publishes: Billboard, Back Stage, Film Journal
andThe Hollywood Reporter
■ Hosts the Billboard MusicAwards annually and the CLIO awards
■ Holding company with many media outlets – maximised advertisement opportunities
■ Occasionally distributes in Japan and Brazil
Why would Prometheus Global Media be interested in my magazine?
■ As my target audience is predominantly British they would be able to expand their
international influence by distributing outside of the US, there would also be more
opportunities for international distribution should my magazine be successful enough
■ Their award ceremonies would be an excellent advertising opportunity for my new
magazine, they would also be able to involve British music artists features in my
magazine and this would attract a larger number of viewers from the UK and more
media coverage
