The student learned several important lessons from completing their preliminary task that improved their final magazine production. For the preliminary task, the front cover photo was blurry with distracting lighting and background, and the contents page lacked sufficient text and had an unedited photo. However, completing this early version allowed the student to experiment with tools and gain experience. For the final production, the student applied these lessons. Specifically, they improved photo editing and lighting, implemented a color scheme and harmonious layout, used varied fonts for headings, and included more informative text. Completing the preliminary task helped the student feel more confident and learn key skills that resulted in a higher quality end product.
3. Improvements
Preliminary front cover:
• No artificial lighting used, in fact lighting isn’t even considered.
• The image is slightly blurry.
• Barely any text or information.
• The font used does not stand out and size of it is not suitable.
• No editing whatsoever of the image itself.
• The angle of the image isn’t ideal.
• The background is distracting and messy.
• The model’s pose is slightly confusing/random (doesn’t inform which
target audience).
Final production front cover:
• The image has evidently been edited and processed.
• The picture itself is clear and of high quality.
• There are a range of different eye-catching, suitable and visually pleasing fonts.
• A lot more text and information which informs the audience about the subject of
the magazine.
• There is a clear colour scheme.
• The model’s pose is suitable/ideal for this genre.
• The lighting is just right (not too bright).
• The layout is harmonious and balanced.
5. Improvements
Final production contents page:
A sufficient amount of text informing the reader what’s actually inside the magazine.
Use of font is much better. Headings that need to stand out are in bold.
Text is placed in a harmonious way,(flows around model’s face).
House style and colour scheme is suitable for my genre of music magazine.
Photo has been processed with monochrome filter (black and white), and there has been parts of
the model’s face that have either been highlighted, sharpened or darkened.
Layout seems more researched and thought out.
Preliminary task contents page:
• Not enough text, therefore reader isn’t informed on what’s inside the magazine.
• Font is not very obvious – too thin/not eye-catching and not visually pleasing.
• Lighting in picture isn’t great.
• Image isn’t edited/processed.
• No house style/ colour scheme.
• The page is too minimalist – almost empty – feels incomplete.
• Layout is very basic.
• Editing of the overall page seems almost non-existent.
• Layout isn’t great in terms of the model’s positioning.
6. What I have learned
My preliminary task helped me a realise what needs to be done/changed I order to produce a higher
quality production. In fact I found my preliminary task extremely helpful as it gave me a chance to
experiment with the various technological tools I used in my production. In addition to this it helped me
feel more confident with what I was doing for the final production as I had had some experience.
Without the completion of my preliminary task I don’t think my final production would’ve been as
good.
I learnt that:
Layout needs to be harmonious and balanced, in other words in needs to flow nicely and catch the
eye of the audience.
Image needs to be edited for things such as blemishes and also to make it look neat. In addition
to this, it needs to be processed for it to not be plain.
Text/Font things like the masthead need to stand out and be bold, and there needs to be more
text to inform the audience about the content of the magazine.
Lighting has to be taken into account and needs to be carefully chosen as it can totally change
the look of the magazine.
Photography angle of the model is important as well as size (eg: its too small on the preliminary
cover).
7. Conclusion:
Due to my preliminary task I learned about the importance of lighting, camera
angles, editing, layout and I also built up my skills in these things. I also got to
practice these skills more than once therefore that improved my overall
production, as I was a much more familiar with what I was doing.
