The first draft on the
left seems to be a
more conventional
format for
magazines and I
think that it would
work well in
attracting the
audience to see
what is in my
magazine, and from
my research I would
be able to include
showings of
upcoming artist
interviews and
events.
The second draft
seems more
alternative and would
link well to my genre
of magazine. I think
that this would look
interesting and good
to try out, however I
do worry about the
masthead and what it
would look like going
down. It may not look
as professional and go
against traditional
magazine conventions.

The first draft seems
really busy in comparison
to the second one, and I
think that the second one
reminds me of something
alternative. The first draft
seems to look like it is
meant to appeal to
younger people, whilst
the second is more
mature and clean. Linking
back to the my
interviews, one person
seemed to be really
organised and a more
formal and clean layout
would work better to
attract my audience.

5. First Double Page Spread Drafts
I quite like both of
these styles and they
seem minimal and
simplistic which is
something I want my
magazine’s main
feature to be. The
second draft reminds
me of the Mixmag
magazine DPS that I
analysed in my
research, and I think
that layout gave an
individual and
interesting look which
is something that
would link well to an
indie-alternative rock
style genre.

6. Chosen Drafts to develop
 Both front covers – I want to see what it would look like with the masthead laid
out differently.
 Second Contents page – the first draft seemed too busy and didn’t fit in with my
idea of producing a more minimalistic style which the first interviewee helped me
decide because of the more sophisticated and simple style.
 Both double page spreads – they are both very similar yet I want to see which one
would be better design wise on the computer.

12. Thoughts
 I like the first cover page draft because it looks more conventional and professional as
a magazine. I also like the way the mast head is positioned and I think this is better
designed – however I would change the style of photo.
 The contents page is really differentiated against typical magazine designs, and the
minimalist aspect is very interesting and unique to look at.
 The second double page spread design is more effective and sticks within a typical
design with different elements like graphic designs.
 I like all these designs and is something that I will bring forward into my final
development of magazine. The styles are really interesting and I have kept a house
style of yellow and black to stand out. I also think that the minimal style keeps an
indie-alternative theme, using black and certain artists would help solidify the rock
style genre too.
