2. Research
For research I studied other magazine covers and double page spreads. I took
note of the text fonts that were used, as well as colours and where on the
text on the page was positioned. This was so I can get an idea for what I want
to do for the magazine and the research gave me inspiration and ideas for
what to do. At the end of it I knew what font I wanted to use, as well as what
colour scheme and where to place the text on the front cover and double
page spreads.
Research was very helpful for what I wanted to do however it can take a long
time to do and that time can be spent doing the actual product, despite
needing the research. Research was also tricky in terms of knowing what to
search for, and where to look for it.
3. Planning
For planning I created 2 mind maps, both exploring different ideas for my
magazine. I chose to do the photography magazine over doing the indie film
magazine as I thought doing photography would be easier to make and do
research for than a magazine based on films. I also created a mood board
with similar images and colours that I would use in the magazine.
Planning really helped me with organising my product and what to do with
everything I was going to put in it, however planning was difficult at times. It
took a while to do whilst that time could’ve been spent doing the actual print
project.
4. Time Management
• I did manage my time well. I met the first deadline for the work even when
having done 2 double page spreads. Despite already being delighted with
the work I do feel as if my work could have improved had I been given
extra time to complete it all, particularly my second double page spread. I
would have added more text and possibly another photo giving more
information about my self. I feel like this would have made the second
double page spread look more pleasing in terms of quality.
5. Technical Qualities
Similarities
• Both magazines are based on
photography.
• Both have titles at the top in in
big, bold, white letters.
• Both have beautiful photos of the
sunsetting over a horizon.
• Both have barcodes on them.
Differences
• My front cover has less text on it than the
other.
• The official one has more of a red colour
scheme whilst mine has more of a red
one .
• One has a barcode at the top and the
other has one on the bottom.
• The official magazine is mainly based on
outdoor photography.
6. Aesthetic QualitiesI like the use of the
bright orange colour
scheme that I have
used. I think it makes
the whole cover feel
very satisfying to look
at.
I like how the text
looks. The white
coloured font makes
it really stand out to
the reader.
I feel as if I should
have put a text box
around all the texts to
make it look tidier. And
for some reason, the
text has an outline.
I like the background in
the second double page
spread. It is lit up with
different neon lights
and looks beautiful in
the evening.
7. Audience Appeal
I feel as if I have appealed to my audience in some ways rather
than others. I included the theme of photography however I feel
as if I failed to make it obvious that I was targeting the male
gender or trying to make it appeal to the balanced psychographic.
I do think I have appealed to the middle class social status but not
in the way that I wanted to, although I believe I spoke in a manner
simple enough for middle class people. I only really talked about
my photos, how I took them and then I talked about my history
and how I developed my interest for photography. There also
wasn’t much to appeal to ages 15-18 however it is mature enough
for those age ranges.
