1. MAGAZINE ADVART ANALYSIS:
JESSIE J ‘WHO YOU ARE’
This is a magazine advert that promotes the artist Jessie J and her upcoming album. This
magazine advert isn’t targeted towards any specific gender as it doesn’t have traditional
colours that would help identify a gender. The dominant colours within the magazine advert
is black white and gold, black suggesting dominance, white connoting purity and gold
equalling power. “Who you are” exploits the message
of identifying self-worth and loving yourself, the font
that looks as though it is hand written which makes
the message personal for her and fans to share.
Within this advert the artist is predominantly wearing
black, which suggest that she has a rebellious attitude
which challenges the norm of society, and highlights
the message of loving yourself for who you are. These
colours (Black and white) clearly contrast each other,
which insinuates that she is unique and better than
any average artist. This point is supported through
the use of gold writing that is somewhat related to
the artists, (words such as ‘Jessie J’, ‘debut album’
and ‘international smash hit’) Which emphasises she
is better than any other artist. Jessie J’s name is
represented in a bold gold font in the foreground of
the magazine advert. As gold is expensive and has a
high significance within society, it implies that she is
wealthy in talent, has power with the music industry
and is a strong leader. The image of Jessie J is a close
up and is positioned in a symmetrical manner within the magazine advert, this is so she gets
recognition as an artist. As this is the case it has resulted in Jessie J looking directly into the
camera giving the impression she is looking straight into the eyes of her audience. Jessie J’s
eyes have been sharpened to make them more enhanced implying she has passion and
drive when broadcasting her music. By sharpening her eyes to a more piercing blue it results
in her looking fierce and confident. This type of editing and composition in turn makes the
audience feel important as they are connecting with the artist, it also emphasises the point
of loving who you are. This image also implies that she is breaking away from her past (of
bulling) to become who she really is. This is because there is a thick black liner around the
poster, suggesting she is trapped and within the image Jessie J’s hands up by her head in a
claw like manner, which is implying that she is pulling away a curtain and breaking free from
her fears. In addition this image it shows that she breaking out from the traditional
conventions of pop genre as she is opposing the traditional bright colours making her an
unconventional artist. In this image there is a use of high key lighting throughout this image,
implying that Jessie J is an important deal and has an important message for her audience.
The promoters have included another well-known artist when encouraging the audience to
listen to her music. It also have other promotional factors, for example including other social
media platforms in which others can reach and follow the artist.
