TRENDS, NETWORKS AND
CRITICALTHINKING INTHE
21ST CENTURY
Lesson 1: Definition of Trends
 Differentiate a trend from a fad
 Apply Critical thinking in spotting
a fad and a trend
 Practice the value of respect in
expressing one’s thought
 Display social awareness
OBJECTIVES:
1.What have you noticed from the given
pictures?
FOCUS QUESTION:
2.What could be the meaning of these
changes, trends?
What is
TREND/S?
Trend is a product or idea
that stayed through time
because of the benefits
people get.
Trend is a directed movement
or behaviour. It is a movement
or behaviour that is geared
towards a certain direction.
Furthermore, a trend also
implies CHANGE. This means
that sooner or later, a trend is
bound to change. Since it is a
movement or behavior, the
change can be positive or
negative, good or
bad, stable or erratic.
This also means that a predicted trend may
not even come true. Thus, it is difficult
to study and predict when a trend will come
or how long it will last.
Nevertheless, in identifying
trends,
you should first be able to
distinguish it from a FAD, lest
you mistake a fad for a trend.
What is a
FAD?
What indeed is the
difference between fads
and trends?
However, how does
one differentiate a fad
from a trend?
Trend is easy to spot when:
 It comes from a fad
 It stays long-term in the market
 It provides solutions to people’s problems
 It assesses a successful evolution of the product
Let’s do
this thing!!!
1.Identify at least 5
trends in our
society.
2. Among the different
given trends (globally),
identify one trend and
why to do you think it’s
useful.
Test 1. True or False: Write T if the statement suggests truth
about the trend and if false write F.
1.A line of development is called trend.
2.One of the trends in technology now is wireless wifi.
3.It is fine to follow the trend even though you violate the rule
in some particular occasion.
4.The main objective of trend is for the betterment of life and
not to make our life messy one.

items below, by writing “trend” or “fad” before the number:
1. Slimming pills that promise unrealistic results in less than a
month's time
2. Brown an organic red rice that seems a healthier option than
white rice
3. Existence of memes in online media

Lesson 2: Elements of a Trend
THE ELEMENTS OF
TRENDS AND FADS
1. APPEAL - This refer to the degree of attraction that a trends
or fad causes on people. Both fads and trends are attractive to
people. This is not extraordinary because trends, on many
occasions, arise from fads.
THE ELEMENTS OF
TRENDS AND FADS
2. RESULT – This pertains to the impact of a FAD or a TREND.
Impact refers to the ability of a fad or trend to produce a
sustainable movement or change.
In case of fads, the impact is usually overstated and merely hyped
by the media. Without the publicity people will tend to forget about
it and it dies a natural death.
On the other hand trends continue for a long period with or without the
aid of advertisements. Trends do not require publicity to exist as
compared to fads, which are dependent on marketing.
THE ELEMENTS OF
TRENDS AND FADS
3. SCOPE – This indicates the extents of the influence of a fad
or a trend. A Fad has a limited scope, which means that it is
only accepted by a selected group of people. Meanwhile, the
influence of a trend is far-reaching.
THE ELEMENTS OF
TRENDS AND FADS
4. SUPPORT – This means the structure that enables a fad or a
trend to be sustainable. With regard to fads, the support is
almost inexistence and it is unclear how the support, if any, was
established. Fads usually catch us by surprise since we do not
know how they suddenly became as popular as they are.
Consequently, since fads do not have formidable support
system, they disappear almost as fast as they appeared.
THE ELEMENTS OF
TRENDS AND FADS
4. SUPPORT - As regards trends, it is relatively easy to
determine how they came to exist. There are traces of their
origins and how they are sustained can be clearly defined. As a
result, efforts can be conducted to bolster the longevity of the
lifeline of a desired trend.
THE ELEMENTS OF
TRENDS AND FADS
5. SUSTAINABILITY - This refers to the length of time that a
fad or a trend can continue to exist. For fads, sustainability is
relatively brief. This means that a fad may persist for a few
weeks up to a few months but it does not for a long as a year.
For trends, the length of their existence is usually measured in
months and years
THE ELEMENTS OF
TRENDS AND FADS
6. VALUE – This pertains to the utility or usefulness that can be
derived from a fad or a trend. In the case of a Fad, the utility is
limited only to areas where it is directly related. On the other
hand, trends are useful to areas which may or may not be
related to the trend.
THE CHARACTERISTICS OF TRENDS AND FADS
1. APPEAL - Its characteristic - Attractive to the public because
it is easy to get, makes them look/feel better or does not deviate
much from the general norm/ status quo
2. RESULT - Its characteristic - Endure with or without
publicity
4. SUPPORT - Its characteristic - Supported by a number of
fads, existing trends, and prevalent socioeconomic, political,
and religio-cultural factors, among others
3. SCOPE - Its characteristic - Caters to and accepted by a wide
audience or a large group of consumers
THE CHARACTERISTICS OF TRENDS AND FADS
5. SUSTAINABILITY - Its characteristic - Can be sustained for
a long period (usually years)
6. VALUE- Its characteristic - Extensive even as far as areas not
directly related to it(e.g., implications of market trends affect,
aside from the business and the economy, areas such as
education, health, environment, government policy and
technology, to name a few)
Let’s do
this thing!!!
Students will
evaluate a given
trend through its
elements. Explain
briefly.
True or False. Write T if the statement is true and if false write F
1. Trends are attractive to people.

related to the trend.
4. The sustainability of a trend is clearly defined.
5. Scope refers to the degree of attraction that a trend causes in
people.

sustainable.
7. Trends do not require publicity to exist.
8. Trends continue for a long period with or without the aid

  • 6. Trend is a product or idea that stayed through time because of the benefits people get.
  • 7. Trend is a directed movement or behaviour. It is a movement or behaviour that is geared towards a certain direction.
  • 8. Furthermore, a trend also implies CHANGE. This means that sooner or later, a trend is bound to change. Since it is a movement or behavior, the change can be positive or negative, good or bad, stable or erratic.
  • 9. This also means that a predicted trend may not even come true. Thus, it is difficult to study and predict when a trend will come or how long it will last. Nevertheless, in identifying trends, you should first be able to distinguish it from a FAD, lest you mistake a fad for a trend.
  • 11.
  • 12.
  • 13. What indeed is the difference between fads and trends? However, how does one differentiate a fad from a trend?

  • 20. TRENDS, NETWORKS AND CRITICALTHINKING INTHE 21ST CENTURY Lesson 2: Elements of a Trend
  • 21. THE ELEMENTS OF TRENDS AND FADS 1. APPEAL - This refer to the degree of attraction that a trends or fad causes on people. Both fads and trends are attractive to people. This is not extraordinary because trends, on many occasions, arise from fads.
  • 22. THE ELEMENTS OF TRENDS AND FADS 2. RESULT – This pertains to the impact of a FAD or a TREND. Impact refers to the ability of a fad or trend to produce a sustainable movement or change. In case of fads, the impact is usually overstated and merely hyped by the media. Without the publicity people will tend to forget about it and it dies a natural death. On the other hand trends continue for a long period with or without the aid of advertisements. Trends do not require publicity to exist as compared to fads, which are dependent on marketing.
  • 23. THE ELEMENTS OF TRENDS AND FADS 3. SCOPE – This indicates the extents of the influence of a fad or a trend. A Fad has a limited scope, which means that it is only accepted by a selected group of people. Meanwhile, the influence of a trend is far-reaching.
  • 24. THE ELEMENTS OF TRENDS AND FADS 4. SUPPORT – This means the structure that enables a fad or a trend to be sustainable. With regard to fads, the support is almost inexistence and it is unclear how the support, if any, was established. Fads usually catch us by surprise since we do not know how they suddenly became as popular as they are. Consequently, since fads do not have formidable support system, they disappear almost as fast as they appeared.
  • 25. THE ELEMENTS OF TRENDS AND FADS 4. SUPPORT - As regards trends, it is relatively easy to determine how they came to exist. There are traces of their origins and how they are sustained can be clearly defined. As a result, efforts can be conducted to bolster the longevity of the lifeline of a desired trend.
  • 26. THE ELEMENTS OF TRENDS AND FADS 5. SUSTAINABILITY - This refers to the length of time that a fad or a trend can continue to exist. For fads, sustainability is relatively brief. This means that a fad may persist for a few weeks up to a few months but it does not for a long as a year. For trends, the length of their existence is usually measured in months and years
  • 27. THE ELEMENTS OF TRENDS AND FADS 6. VALUE – This pertains to the utility or usefulness that can be derived from a fad or a trend. In the case of a Fad, the utility is limited only to areas where it is directly related. On the other hand, trends are useful to areas which may or may not be related to the trend.
  • 28. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF TRENDS AND FADS 1. APPEAL - Its characteristic - Attractive to the public because it is easy to get, makes them look/feel better or does not deviate much from the general norm/ status quo 2. RESULT - Its characteristic - Endure with or without publicity 4. SUPPORT - Its characteristic - Supported by a number of fads, existing trends, and prevalent socioeconomic, political, and religio-cultural factors, among others 3. SCOPE - Its characteristic - Caters to and accepted by a wide audience or a large group of consumers
  • 29. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF TRENDS AND FADS 5. SUSTAINABILITY - Its characteristic - Can be sustained for a long period (usually years) 6. VALUE- Its characteristic - Extensive even as far as areas not directly related to it(e.g., implications of market trends affect, aside from the business and the economy, areas such as education, health, environment, government policy and technology, to name a few)
  • 31. Students will evaluate a given trend through its elements. Explain briefly.
  • 32. True or False. Write T if the statement is true and if false write F 1. Trends are attractive to people. 2. For trends, the length of their existence is usually measured in months and years. 3. Trends are useful to different areas which may or may not be related to the trend. 4.
