What is a Fad? What is Fashion? What is a
Trend?
Fad-an unconventional object, action, or
idea that a large number of people are
attached to for a very short time. Less
predictable than fashion.
Fashion-an enthusiastic attachment among
a large number of people for particular
styles of appearance or behavior.
Trend- a general direction in which
something is developing or changing.
Trends vs. Fads
• A fad is any form of behavior that
is intensely followed by a
population for a short period of
time. The behavior will rise
relatively quickly and fall
relatively quickly once the
perception of novelty is gone.

Fads come fast
and fade away
Trends vs. Fads
• A trend gets stronger over
time and does stick around.
• Trends have identifiable
and explainable rises that
are driven by audience
needs.

• In the words of the forever-
awesome Seth Godin,
“A trend gains power over time,
because it’s not merely part of a
moment, it’s a tool, a connector
that will become more valuable as
other people commit to engaging
in it.”

A trend map is a visual depiction of
relevant trends influencing the system
around a given topic. It is developed
using the collective knowledge and
experience of a group of people
familiar with a given
system and its context.
CONTEXTS · Understand an issue’s
landscape/context and history.
· Identify how various contextual
factors (e.g., social, political,
cultural, and economic
developments and events)
influence a topic.
CONNECTIONS · Explore relationships,
momentum, and energy among
the trends on the map.
PATTERNS · Identify key trends (e.g., elements
that we have identified prior) that
may influence the topic.
· Understand how policies or social
and cultural norms are changing.
· Understand the relationships
between outputs and outcomes
and external factors.

  • 12. What is a Fad? What is Fashion? What is a Trend? Fad-an unconventional object, action, or idea that a large number of people are attached to for a very short time. Less predictable than fashion. Fashion-an enthusiastic attachment among a large number of people for particular styles of appearance or behavior. Trend- a general direction in which something is developing or changing.
  • 13. Trends vs. Fads • A fad is any form of behavior that is intensely followed by a population for a short period of time. The behavior will rise relatively quickly and fall relatively quickly once the perception of novelty is gone.
  • 15. Trends vs. Fads • A trend gets stronger over time and does stick around. • Trends have identifiable and explainable rises that are driven by audience needs.
