This activity sheet discusses trends and fads. It begins by defining trends as logical patterns of change that many people follow, while fads are short-lived interests. The document then differentiates trends and fads based on duration, past occurrence, and areas they can happen. Trend spotting and identifying elements of trends like number of participants and causes are also explained. Later activities require students to identify examples as trends or fads, compare trends and fads, write about a trending topic, and match definitions to concepts. The goal is for students to understand the difference between trends and fads and appreciate how to identify trends.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Trends and Fads
Trends is a logical pattern of change that systematically recorded. It is a new way of doing
things of an individual group or societal approach then followed by many people. Trends
operates sources of change and develop for individual, organization and institution. Fad on the
other hand is something that people are highly interested in a relative short period of time.
Distinguishing Trends and Fads
1. TREND lasts for a longer period than a FAD.
It may take years before a TREND slows down, while it only takes a few weeks or months
for a FAD to stay. Thus, a FAD is a temporary or short – lived pattern of group behavior. For
instance, the Beatlemania in the 1960s and the hippie TRENDS lasted for decades whereas the
FAD of the song “Gangnam Style” was short – lived. A trend appears suddenly, then it became
popular and do not disappear.
2. A TREND has a record of occurrence in the past and might continue to the present,
something which is unseen in a FAD.
It leaves a long, significant mark in history and could go on to the present. For instance,
the rise of One Direction ushered back the boy band trend in music, which recurs intermittently
since the 1960s. The “Trumpets” dance challenge and the mannequin challenge which went
viral on television and social media were FADS that quickly faded away. A fad appears suddenly,
then it becomes enormously popular and disappear suddenly as it came.
3. Trends and Fads can happen in areas of life where change or transformation
continuously occurs.
This means that while you are alive, you will encounter and experience various trends
and fads.

The Process of Identifying Trends
Trend Analysis is the widespread practice of collecting information and attempting to spot a
pattern or trend in the information.
Trend Spotting is the identification of new trends or attempting to see the future.
Trend spotter is a person who notices and reports on new fashions ideas or activities that
are becoming popular.
By spotting a trend, you can think of ways to maintain your lead in your field of
specialization, detect new opportunities to grab, and “invent” a future life for you, your family,
and your close friends.
Elements of a Trend
1. Number of participants - basically an individual started a trend but as times
progresses number of people following it increases.
2. Pattern of Behavior – a trend is a form of repetitive action of people.
3. Length of time – Its along time frames sometimes its runs for a decade.
4. Cause – A trends has a starting point which can be an idea, technology, event, or a
person.
5. Consequence - A trend makes considerable influence or impact. Social networking has
become an encompassing trend that lends to influence behaviors of online users.
Trends and fads should not be mistaken as the same, they may have similarities but that
are not the same so to avoid misleading here are some of characteristics of a trend.
1. Impact – It must bring change and develop people and its system.
2. Innovation and Idea – Reasonable and acceptable ideas may give useful knowledge
that could bring new ideas that when combined with another idea can lead to an
excellent innovation.
3. Consistency – it does not immediately fade but rather as time goes by it develops among
people and stay as part of the culture.
