CLASSIFICATION OF COCKROACH
PHYLUM Arthropoda
CLASS Insecta
ORDER Blattodae
GENUS Periplaneta
SPECIES Americana
• Shape and size: Body is narrow, elongated, bilaterally
symmetrical and dorso-ventrally flattened. The adult measures
3-4cm in length and 2cm in width.
• Colouration: The colour is shining reddish-brown.
• Exoskeleton: The whole body is externally covered by brown-
coloured, hard, jointed, chitinous and greasy cuticle.
- Exoskeleton has hardened plates called sclerites.
External Features
• Cuticle: This affords protection from loss of
water, provides rigidity and offers points of
attachment to body muscles.
• Segmentation: Its body is divided into head,
thorax and abdomen.
