9. Masthead
Font Style Choices
Drop Capital: I will be using this for my drop capital for the simple
reasons that it will be consistent within every double page spread of our
music magazine. Furthermore it may not stand out from the crowd, but it
is constant and consistent so it can easily be outlined and referred to as
a Drop Capital.
Title of Artist: Now for this font style, there are two types so that
indicates a certain level of inconsistency however a level of variation
which is also gratifying when it comes font styles. These two font styles
are bold, and in similarity with the drop capital font styles but are
consistent and are easy on the eye for the consumers of our
product/service we are offering.
The significance of our font style choices is massive as it can be
detrimental to the sales of our music magazine as the potential
customers may not like some of the masthead font styles & it is little
aspects as little as that which will make the difference between yes or
no in relation to customers purchasing our music magazine.
10. Adaptation of Font Style choices
When creating a masthead, you can’t just pick out a font and input into a design as
this is one very unprofessional and informal as well as indecisive and naive. There
are certain formats and motions you have to go through when deciding what Font
Style you decide to use for our designs for our music magazine (Front Cover &
DPS).
One of these formats would be to start with a basic Font Style and adapt this font
style whether that is through the form of a focus group, market research whether it is
primary or secondary and this has been very helpful towards us as then the local
demographic can almost have the deciding vote on what Font Style they would like
to see which could positively impact our customer sales for our debut edition of our
music magazine.
Even though Font Style may not seem that important, towards some readers that
we are trying to appeal to it may mean something more to them. For example it may
connote something serious or jovial towards them and can foreshadow maybe the
tone of a particular interviews for the rest of this debut edition of our music
magazine.
In order to make our magazine rival other magazines in our genre such as Clash but
also in the general genre of music magazines such as NME, Kerrang & Mojo we
13. Connotations behind the Mood Board
The images that have been formatted into the last 2 slides imply what kind of artists,
colours & styles we are looking to format into our music magazine.
Young & upcoming artists who are starting to make their name for themselves, for
example Rita Ora & Ed Sheeran & Taylor Swift who are already a big draw in the
music industry and the reason they are a big draw is the reason why we want them to
be on the front cover and double page spread of our music magazine.
As you can see the mood board highlights the target audience that we definitely want
to attract to our music magazine in order to gain customer sales. Additionally, this
mood board enables us to know what demographic we are targeting so we know then
what type of content we want to deliver.
15. Graphic Layout (Front Cover)
The Masthead is displayed as the main thin bar at the top of the image
below, the masthead needs to be kept simple as it is a very conventional
and therefore essential aspect of the front cover of any music magazine.
This is very important as we want the Masthead to be recognisable to the
customers so that they might be intrigued by the conventionalism from our
magazine of inspiration “Clash” The main Front Cover Image
foreshadows the content for
the rest of this music magazine
and that sets out what kind of
artists and what kind of genre
is put out throughout the latest
addition of this music
magazine. Additionally, the
Front Cover Image gives the
customers a moment to take in
and understand what the
picture might foreshadow what
content is to come later in this
debut issue of our music
magazine.
The Cover
Lines are
normally
considered as
an important
aspect, and
therefore the
cover lines will
be placed onto
this text box and
this will help to
promote our
music magazine
to fans of the
artists who are
the cover lines.
16. Graphic Layout (Front Cover)
The colour pink as I have stated in the
House Style is consistent throughout
our music magazine pages whether
that would be front cover or double
page spread. Furthermore the colour
pink is constant in not only the house
style but also the font style which
makes this music magazine a
conventional magazine in relevance to
their competitors. This thin white bar
states a world exclusive for the music
star who features for our music
magazine whether that be Eminem, or
another music superstar such as Ed
Sheeran. This again is exceptionally
important
17. Graphic Layout of DPS
Within a graphic layout of
my Front Cover & Double
Page Spread there are a
various amount of
conventions which we
have within these graphic
layouts. First and
foremost, Captions
are an essential part of a
double page spread of a
printed publication,
furthermore
Captions are the
description of the images
which are below. These
are very important as it is
known to be conventional
when doing so in order to
be on a level par with
Among many conventions, many consider the
Masthead to be one of the most essential
conventions which mainly boils down to the pure
significance of this convention as without a
Masthead you might as well not even publish your
18. Graphic Layout of DPS
Moving on, the Main
Image is very
important as well as it may
connote to the reader a
particular tone for the rest
of double page spread
interviews. Additionally, the
Main Image is
there to lure the customer
in and intrigue them to
read on, an example of this
would be if the image was
of a BIG music star and
therefore the star appeal
would then lure the
customers in. This would
not only lure the local
demographic/intended
target audience in, it would
also lure fans of that
The Text itself could connote something different
to the reader in hand and therefore it is very
important for us to get this right so we do not come
across to arrogant in the sense that the fans might
get the impression that we have upset them or the big
20. Justification of Masthead Name
Ideas
Within our survey monkey primary research, we asked questions to the
public about what title names otherwise known as masthead names would
they like to see on a pop music magazine Front Cover and the main
responses were: Smash, The News of Music, Truth, Shoot & Pop Me.
First and foremost Smash is a very credible name as we feel it represents
the ethos of our brand in that we would love to blow our competition out of
the water as we want to make a real impact and we feel we can do that with
the names of huge music stars that we have planned.
Additionally, “Truth” is another name which has an element of honesty about
it as our magazine could also represent a certain degree of truth and
honesty in the sense that all of the stories are non fiction and all true so it
would give the fans of music stars a fantastic opportunity to connect with
their idols on a higher level.
Another name which sprung to our mind was The News of Music which may
not sound too appealing but with the content that we have planned this is
another route that we can down with in terms of our masthead and again
this is another route that we can go to if some of the options are
unavailable.
The last two options are “Shoot & Pop Me” these two are more of backup
choices if the top 3 selected go wrong and for some legal reasons we can’t
pick them. The positive from these are that fans can relate to this as our
demographic is relatable to what the word “Shoot & Pop Me” actually means
to the reader in terms of what it connotes.
21. Images of Influence
These two magazines in which we are looking to compete with as we feel there is a gap
in the market. You can clearly see the screenshot to the top left this is a long shot and
this makes the artist in ‘The Skinny Music’ Magazine look quite faded which I think is a
good way as some people may argue that it is a negative approach as the image looks
quite faded but I would argue that it looks interesting as customers may want to find out
why this Front Cover is like this.
22. Images of Influence
Many people might know that Clash Music Magazine is a well structured and setup
music magazine in which we will be using it for our magazine of inspiration. The
camera shot that Clash have used for this particular issue which includes Rita Ora is a
Medium Shot and this is positive in the sense that you can clearly see that the star is
Rita Ora in the sense that she is a big name in the UK and her name is starting to
across the boarder in the USA.
23. Font Style for other Textual Features
We need to consider the values behind a range of Font Styles in order to make a
professional decision on what we want for specific conventions within a Double
Page Spread. Firstly we need the Drop Capital to be bold so that it will be clear
and distinctive in the sense that the potential customers & publishers will know
the Drop Capital when they see this, we feel this is very important as we don’t
want customers going to our rival competitors because of little things like the
Drop Capital. Additionally, the stand first is very important as it sets out the tone
for the rest of the Double Page Spread interview and with the Font Style that we
are analysing here, it is mature which represents our content within our music
magazine very well. This is essentially important as the Stand First could
potentially determine if our potential customers buy our music magazine or not.

29. Conclusion
Mood Boards are notoriously known for importance when creating any
magazine never mind a music magazine as they highlight the content
that you plan your music magazine around alongside maybe some of
the demographic planning options that we want our music magazine to
appeal to. I would say that in conclusion I have learnt a lot about the
production plan and what needs to be carried out including all of the
costs and the quantity of laptops and programs you need to complete
the production plan.
