Final Magazine idea
Front Cover Double Page Spread
Why did I choose Beats as my final magazine name?
From all three name ideas BEATS, Music Matters and Rock your Music. I had to make a very important
decision in the pre- production stage. The reason why I named my music magazine BEATS was because it
was the most popular choice in my primary research (survey to research my target audience and their
needs.) BEATS is also a good music magazine name as it is very conventional phase/word to music
because if a track doesn’t have a Beat then what’s the point, there is no music. It also the sound of drum.
Generation of ideas
This is my mind map, which shows the break down of ideas, regarding the masthead names, frequency, brand
identity, images to be taken, target audience and colour scheme.
Format of BEATS Magazine
Dimensions (Size)?
The size of BEATS magazine will be 283mmX225mm. This is due to the research I did for NME and
what there size is for a full page.
http://www.slideshare.net/zlorhenley/nme-media-informationfull-2011
Style/Values?
BEATS magazine will be available on both printed copies and online platforms, such as social media
websites (Facebook/twitter) and also I will have an official website and an mobile and tablet app. This
is so that people can access BEATS! Music news wherever and whenever they like.
Here at BEATS! Magazine, we believe that by providing news about music of the indie/rock genre will
get people to come together and discover their beat, their place in music. We also believe that making
false statements about an artist/bands is very lawful and immoral and we will always check and
proofread our content to check if it is all true and not misleading about an individual because this
could potentially lead to offending or discriminating them.
Price of BEATS
The price of a typical print issue of BEATS will be £2:50. This is due to the fact that I want to try
and fit into the market within my competitors i.e NME, KERRANG, Q, MOJO.
Subscriptions
Print Subscriptions: I am also going to offer subscriptions, so that it will increase the target
audience and the magazine sales. This is because of the cheaper deals that people can get
instead of buying each issue for £2:50 per issue and because my magazine will be distributed
out monthly it will cost them £30.00 for 12 months (1 year). Whereas if I offer a 1 year print
subscription of just £20.00 with free postage/ delivery then this is a 10% cheaper than what
they are originally paying.
Digital Subscription :I am also going to offer a digital subscription, where they can access
through the mobile and/or tablet app. Due to the fast changing technology modern society. It is
important that company’s keep up to take with it. Choosing a digital subscription is also a more
eco-friendly option because your saving the environment and not wasting paper. For a 1 year
subscription, I will charge £15.00.
Mood Board
This is a collection of bands, artists and other music magazines that have
inspired me to develop my own ideas and thoughts for my own magazine of the
indie/rock genre.

Graphic Layouts
These are my graphic layouts for BEATS! that I created using Photoshop. They show you a
clear, straight forward digital layout of how my magazine pages are going to appear on the
real versions. These will also help me to produce and put together the final versions.
I will have my front cover laid out
like this because it looks very
professional, eye catching and easy
to read.
I will have my DPS laid out like the above because it looks
very structured and professional. Also providing the social
media links on the DPS Interview makes people want to
find out more about the artist or band on their Facebook
and Twitter pages
Draft Article for DPS
This is the draft for the interview with George Ezra that I created for the
purpose of the first issue of Beats Magazine.
Masthead Font Styles
In order for me to make a successful final decision for my
Masthead font style. I have tested, tried and experimented
different ways in which I could represent the genre of my
music magazine, while using Photoshop CS5 to design it. I also
used www.dafonts.com to download a specific font style that
I thought might work for my magazine masthead.
I have tried to create a masthead using inspiration from NME,
which was my magazine of inspiration at the beginning of the
production process.
They are all good masthead styles that fit the purpose of my
magazine very well, but there are some that have not worked
out as well as I expected. These are the 2nd , 3rd and 5th
examples. My favourites are the 1st and the 6th because they
are more fit for the purpose of my new magazine.
Font Styles throughout the magazine
Within the rest of the magazine I will be keep to a quite a clear, strong using
either a Sans Serif, Arial or Times New Roman font. Sans serif font is
also used my masthead font style and this font is very well known to the indie
rock genre.
BEATS Strapline conventions
The strapline that I have chosen is “Discover your BEAT!” This was because it was one that would work the
best because it simple, short, snappy and gets your attention straight away. During the research I came up
with 3 ideas which where
• Discover some fresh new music today!
• The best music you will find, is right inside!
• Come inside to be educated with good quality music!
All the above were not right for my magazine because they are too long. After I collected all the feedback
from people the most popular choice was “Discover some fresh new music today!” but then I received
some written feedback stating that I need to have something more simple, brief and short or something
which links to the masthead name. This is because if you have something that is short simple and brief
they are more likely wanting to read on and find out what’s inside the magazine.
So I decided I needed to keep the word Discover because it sounds very open and also means to find out
or to know more about something and I have included the masthead name BEAT(s) this is because it will
make the reader want to know more about the indie/rock genre and new/upcoming and quality music,
not so much about mainstream artists. Discover your Beat also suggests that BEATS music magazine want
to find you a place in music, I want to make people feel that they can read my magazine and find an artist
or band that they love.
Puff Promotion
WIN 2 FREE
TICKETS
TO
Puff Promotion is a great marketing technique that magazines use to increase their target
market and magazine sales/circulation. It can be things like free gifts/merchandise/posters
and competitions.
For the first issue BEATS Magazine I am going to include a competition to Win 2 free tickets
to V FEST 2015! I will place the promotion on the top right hand corner of the front cover.
Here I have created a sample of what it may look like on my front cover.
2015
Locations Recce
This is the locations recce for the magazine. It clearly outlines where the
images will be taken, the type of images needed, the permission and the
potential hazards/risks.
Photography Plan
This is my Photography plan, which outlines the reasons behind choosing “BEATS” as my magazine title,
the product description, the photographers details, casting members and reasons for choosing them to
feature in the first issue of my magazine, (model requirements) how they should like?, hair and make
up and finally where and when the photoshoot is going to take place.
Prop list for the photos taken
This is an in depth list of all the props/equipment and other essentials that will be needed for not only the
photoshoot, but of running my business as a whole. It includes Apple macs, printers and printer ink, paper,
pens, Adobe Photoshop, Rented office space, office furniture, lighting, cameras, tripods, guitars, stools, SD
cards and Tea, Coffee refreshments. Within this I have also included screenshots of the process and the prices.
Production Plan
This is the production plan, which outlines all the production stages i.e. Pre-
production/production and post- production. I have provided info of what needs to
be done, what equipment is needed in all stages and the people involved
Test Photography
By taking photos as trial versions is a good way to get the best possible images at the
end for my new magazine BEATS!
These are photos that I had taken that are not great quality. This is due to many
factors such as poor composition, the fact that the second and third image has the
guitar cut off, there is other distractions in the background of the image that makes
the main subject unimportant.
Sample Materials
BEATS Magazine
Here is the first version of BEATS front cover, that I created as you can see it is not the best and there are many
faults that need to be worked upon.
Masthead: BEATS!
To reassure the reader of the
brand’s product.
Strapline:
“Discover Your Beat!”
A strapline is like a slogan. They are
short, snappy sentences that tell the
reader what the magazine is all about
or what there values/beliefs are and
what they want their readers to be
like.
Main headline: This is to show
the reader about one of the
main article or interviews within
the issue
Publisher links: To let the readers know a bit more about the
background and how it started.
Social Media links: So that
readers can follow the magazine
not only through buying the
hard copy but through online
platforms i.e. Facebook, Twitter
and Instagram.
Barcode: For retailers use only.
Price: £2:50 per issue/copy
Cover Lines: They tell the reader
more about what’s inside the
issue/they are clues?
Puff Promotion: Competition to win 2
free tickets to V Festival 2015. Puff
promotions persuades people to buy
the magazine to see if they have won
the tickets or have a free gift.
Sample Materials
Rock Your Music Magazine
This is a sample of the front cover that I created for my other magazine idea called “Rock Your Music”.
Masthead: “Rock Your MUSIC”.
Date of Issue: January 2015
Strapline “The UK’s BEST
ROCK MUSIC!”
Cover Lines: They tell the
reader more about what’s
inside the issue/they are
clues?
Main headline: This is to
show the reader about one
of the main article or
interviews within the issue
Social Media and
publisher links
Barcode: for retailers use

Price: £2.50
Puff promotion:
Competition to win 2 free

Fest 2015
Conclusion
In this section, I have be able to produce pre- production materials
for my planed print magazine product called “BEATS!”
I have created hand drawn drafts so that I knew exactly what
content to include in the final version on Photoshop. I have also
began to think about how I want to present my font styles for my
masthead and for the rest of the magazine.
I have created a mood board of all inspirational ideas, a written
draft interview, created graphic layouts, locations recce a
photography plan, prop list for the photos taken and finally a
production plan which included everything that needs to be done
to get the first issue produced and distributed to all retailers.

I have tried to create a masthead using inspiration from NME, which was my magazine of inspiration at the beginning of the production process. They are all good masthead styles that fit the purpose of my magazine very well, but there are some that have not worked out as well as I expected. These are the 2nd , 3rd and 5th examples. My favourites are the 1st and the 6th because they are more fit for the purpose of my new magazine. Font Styles throughout the magazine Within the rest of the magazine I will be keep to a quite a clear, strong using either a Sans Serif, Arial or Times New Roman font. Sans serif font is also used my masthead font style and this font is very well known to the indie rock genre.
  • 15. BEATS Strapline conventions The strapline that I have chosen is “Discover your BEAT!” This was because it was one that would work the best because it simple, short, snappy and gets your attention straight away. During the research I came up with 3 ideas which where • Discover some fresh new music today! • The best music you will find, is right inside! • Come inside to be educated with good quality music! All the above were not right for my magazine because they are too long. After I collected all the feedback from people the most popular choice was “Discover some fresh new music today!” but then I received some written feedback stating that I need to have something more simple, brief and short or something which links to the masthead name. This is because if you have something that is short simple and brief they are more likely wanting to read on and find out what’s inside the magazine. So I decided I needed to keep the word Discover because it sounds very open and also means to find out or to know more about something and I have included the masthead name BEAT(s) this is because it will make the reader want to know more about the indie/rock genre and new/upcoming and quality music, not so much about mainstream artists. Discover your Beat also suggests that BEATS music magazine want to find you a place in music, I want to make people feel that they can read my magazine and find an artist or band that they love.
  • 16. Puff Promotion WIN 2 FREE TICKETS TO Puff Promotion is a great marketing technique that magazines use to increase their target market and magazine sales/circulation. I will place the promotion on the top right hand corner of the front cover. Here I have created a sample of what it may look like on my front cover. 2015

  • 21. Test Photography By taking photos as trial versions is a good way to get the best possible images at the end for my new magazine BEATS! These are photos that I had taken that are not great quality. This is due to many factors such as poor composition, the fact that the second and third image has the guitar cut off, there is other distractions in the background of the image that makes the main subject unimportant.
  • 22. Sample Materials BEATS Magazine Here is the first version of BEATS front cover, that I created as you can see it is not the best and there are many faults that need to be worked upon. Masthead: BEATS! To reassure the reader of the brand’s product. Strapline: “Discover Your Beat!” A strapline is like a slogan. • 24. Conclusion In this section, I have be able to produce pre- production materials for my planed print magazine product called “BEATS!” I have created hand drawn drafts so that I knew exactly what content to include in the final version on Photoshop. I have also began to think about how I want to present my font styles for my masthead and for the rest of the magazine. I have created a mood board of all inspirational ideas, a written draft interview, created graphic layouts, locations recce a photography plan, prop list for the photos taken and finally a production plan which included everything that needs to be done to get the first issue produced and distributed to all retailers.
