Video Marking Criteria

Controlled use of the camera /
Your camera work is mostly smooth and controlled. I think there are some instances however, where
handheld movement has been used without justification. For example, the shot of Grace looking out the
window has been filmed as a POV shot, but it is not from her POV. Another example is the tracking shot of
Abi and Grace at the start
Framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate /
Framing is mostly effective as the planned action is in shot. I think there are some shots however, where
the framing feels awkward. For example, the tilt shot of Grace looking up feels too close. There are other
shots where you need to consider whether the shots selected best convey your characters and work to
progress the narrative. For example, is there a reason why Grace’s identity is concealed in the introductory
shots?
Using a variety of shot distances as appropriate /
A wide range of shot distances have been used. As above, please consider whether they are all the most
effective in conveying details of your characters and progressing the narrative
Shooting material appropriate for the target audience and task /
The subject matter is typical of the horror genre. To improve in this area you need to consider how you
could use camerawork to better establish your characters
Selecting mise en scène, inc colour, lighting, objects & setting /
All elements of the mise en scene are well planned and effective
Editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer /
The planned narrative is clear (for the purposes of a teaser trailer). You have identified the main character
and set up the premise of the narrative
Using appropriate shot transitions for the task set /
The pace feels very awkward at the moment and you haven’t yet achieved the correct rhythm for a trailer.
This is partly because some shots feel too fast/slow or end too abruptly
Using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task set /
The selected music is suited to the horror genre, however it doesn’t work to create the correct rhythm for
a trailer and as a result the piece lacks impact. In some shots there is also unwanted audio e.g. the
creaking of the tripod
Using titles appropriately according to institutional conventions /
The titles show understanding of institutional practice and have been constructed using appropriate
software and techniques. To improve, consider whether you need any more titles earlier in your trailer and
look at the duration and transitions used with your titles
