Evaluation Question 7:
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you
have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Preliminary evaluation:
 In the beginning of the course we started of by doing a prelim
video of a script given to us.
 We realised that we weren’t exactly experts but we roughly
knew what to do. As a team we decided to start of by planning
what type of shots we were going to use and where and what
role each of us where going to take.
Focused areas:
Camera skills
Mise en scene
Lighting
Sound=
Editing
Titles
Looking back at the skills:
 Mise en scene:
As we decided as a group who was going to take what lead we all made the
effort to bring in any props or costumes that we may have needed for the day
such as a blazer, a tie and glasses.
 Lighting:
Fortunately, on that day of filming we were lucky enough to have a classroom all
to ourselves which meant we could adjust the lightning either bright or dark.
 Sound:
For our prelim we did not need no background sound other than just us talking.
 Titles:
In our prelim the only title we had where at the beginning of the clip which
indicated who was in the group by showing our names and the title of the prelim.
 Editing:
For the ‘Holby City’ we only used simple shots such as over the shoulder, long shot
and close ups.
As you can see here are all
the names of the members
of the team, however this
does not specify who was
in charge of what.
Prelim continued:
 Through our media we faced difficulties such as not being able to edit with continuity
and the mise en scene being well planned. For example in one scene we had to re-
take the background was different from the original shot this made it look
unprofessional. As the shots were not showing continuity certain areas looked weird
and not in sync.
In this scene as we didn’t know 100% how editing worked we thought
we could just shoot the scene as a whole, but we came to find that we
were wrong. This is the scene were continuity did not occur which
meant that when he closed the door it looked odd as we tried to use 2
different shots from when he entered the room.
As mentioned before of the mise en scene not being well
organised, as you can see at the back we have a bottle of a drink,
his jacket and the iMac computer which was not there when he
first sat down on his chair.
A close up shot requires a lot of skills as one has to emphasis
on something in specific however, when this shot was done
the camera was slightly wobbling which made the image at
times blurry, which was unprofessional.
Bleeding In Love
 As we reached the end of our film ‘Bleeding In Love’, my group and I had a better understanding of
how to edit to a more advanced program. Final cut pro enabled us to edit to a higher degree, which
then made our film more interesting.
 Compared to our first prelim we now knew programs that could help us to make our opening scene
even better.
 When it came to equipment we were also more confident to try different things such as using a tripod at
different heights and angles.
 We used a microphone for our voice over which was spoken by one of the characters. The reason we
used a voiceover is because we found that it was more effective on the audience as they could get an
insight on what the character was thinking and feeling.
 In one of the scenes we hand held a light so that we could manipulate the lightning by making it dimmer
and brighter at certain scenes.
As we were more
experienced we used a
variety of shots such as
using pan for this scene.
Filters were very convenient for us as it allowed
us to change the colour of the scene for when
the character had illusions.
Final Cut Pro:
 The program Final Cut Pro played a
very vital role in our final piece as
this allowed us to add on credits,
use filters, change the speed in
which things occurred and much
more.
Final Cut Pro allowed us
to change the speed at
which these 2 characters
walked. This was crucial
as it made our film more
appealing to our target
audience.
Credit of the crew and
stars were added rather
than just showing them at
the beginning of the
video like in our prelim the
were equally spread out.
Sound played a vital role for our opening scene as it was a
factor which set the scene for the audience when
watching the clip.
Conclusion:
 Overall, I have learnt to do many new things compared to before.
For example, I now now how to use Final cut pro with no struggle, I
have learnt to use different angles and movements whilst filming.
 I have learnt the following:
- different camera shots/angles
- how to use final cut pro
- how to add credits, sound, filters, change the speed for scenes
- how to record voice lovers without any unnecessary sounds in the
background
- how to work as a team and share out tasks so it can all get done
in time
- time management and organisation
