2. Tuesday 15th November 2016
Media Studies Period 1+2/Break
After completing the shot log on the Monday, I was ready to start placing in the first shots on
the editing software Adobe Premiere pro.
Since past roles from our previous AS production and Prelim- I had good past knowledge of
how to use the software program and to use this to our advantage in constructing our
production. As a central character, I did not get to contribute as much through production so I
am determined to work hard for our group throughout the post production stages to contribute
my work and role. With the available footage we had acquired throughout filming, I was able to
begin using the shot log and importing over footage that we evaluated worthy enough to be
placed within the program to begin editing the entirety of the piece.
The footage consisted of shots 1-20, and 34-40 of character Eve walking down the streets as
well as park, alleyway and street locations, there was some pieces of footage that we felt
needed to be recorded over due to the scene not being as effective as desired yet we made a
note for the footage needed to be reshot in order to inform ourselves of this when we come to
re film parts an concluded filming altogether. As our final piece shall be a teaser trailer, our
main job is to refer back t our research and keep reminding ourselves of what a conventional
teaser trailer looks like so that we can begin to form the basic foundation of constructing our
teaser trailer in which the final piece shall be as effective and identifiable to audiences.
Throughout this PowerPoint, I’ll show what I did throughout this period and also breaks and
lunches throughout the week, demonstrating techniques, and effects I used to edit the
production. For now,
Marking the start of this project, I shall be importing and cutting the majority of the scenes in
order to begin creating the skeleton for our teaser trailer.
3. Tuesday 15th November
2016, Media Period
1+2/Break
During the first period of media, I started by uploading our footage taken from the previous
days of filming and downloaded them all onto the M drive in order for our group to easily
locate the files and begin working on editing at their own pace.
I opened up a new project and saved the file onto our group files naming the project
Horror Teaser Trailer to begin working on this file to construct a teaser trailer.
I began on importing footage over from the files (whilst closely conferring with the shot log
from that specific days filming) to the software program to begin editing together the first
few scenes. Once footage has been uploaded, I than proceeded to cut parts using the
cropping tool to get rid of elements that were not seen as relevant for our production, I
found this rather easy, especially with the helping hand of the shot log in which I kept
close by and referred back to, I also relied on my own thoughts within each shot of the
footage, thinking about each scene and what would be needed to make a continuous flow,
for this I referred back to the shot list where I worked my way down in order placing in the
relevant scenes I had in order. In order for it to fully conform to a teaser trailer I made that
I went back to my research in which I looking up my conventions and types of teaser
trailer to again expose myself to the idea of what a teaser trailer is expected to take the
form off so that our production can replicate this and conform to the idea of a horror teaser
trailer.
4. Wednesday 16th November
Period 3/4
On this day, I continued my work in importing over and cutting down the footage like I left the
footage before, with a majority of the scenes now in place, I had to refer back to our planning
in particular the script and storyboards to ensure I have placed in the appropriate scenes for
the footage. Some of the footage, as watched over by the group felt that we needed to
reshoot as some scenes just did not look right so we made a note of this and aim to reshot
these upon our next available chance to met up and reshot these specific scenes.
Placing the appropriate scenes in the editing timeline, proved easy, however I also had to
keep in mind of repetitive movement between scenes of the camera moving, I wanted that
continued flow with the scenes, so zoomed up on individual footage to closely examine the
movement to get this flow. I particularly had to do this when character Eve falls down, I
needed the same continuous flow to give that sense of verisimilitude for audiences so that
nothing sticks out in place nor proves too much of a distraction for audiences.
Whilst watching through the footage, you can see how I’ve effectively kept this flow between
shots to keep the movement in place, and not jumping from scene to scene making it
unrealistic, I was proud of this as I found that I did this up to a good standard, however there
were some scenes that I found that I was unable to do this due to the position of characters,
once all edited I may refer back to it, making notes of these shoots that need to be re-filmed.
5. Wednesday 16th
January, Period 3/4
Whilst editing, I also got to familiarise myself with the
different editing techniques and tools available to me on the
Premiere software program for me to explore and incorporate
onto the footage that our group had imported over onto the
program. As our group had finished filming rather quickly
during our production time, we had time to explore the
features available to us at our dispense in order to gain
recognition of this and thus, use in our teaser trailer. The
more techniques and skills we explore would be effective for
our teaser trailer as it would enhance the overall look and
quality of this.
I was particularly fond of the piece of footage where you can
ultimately flip the scene around-I think this was a rather
clever skill to incorporate into our role of selected footage,
especially how we met some difficulties in having to re
arrange the locations at the park around due to the lamp post
dying out, I think if we were to film a specific scene where
Eve is entering the alley it would continue that repetitiveness
and give that sense of verisimilitude for audiences.
6. Wednesday 16th
January, Period 3/4
I also got back to familiarizing myself with the previous features and
techniques I became acquainted with following our previous years
production –Through the Lens in which I successfully used
Premiere to edit the entirety of our opening sequence trailer and got
to expose myself not only how to use the software program but also
the features it has along side it to enhance the overall chances of
success.
One of the previous features I came back to was the use of
speeding and altering footage, I think I did use a lot of this
throughout our footage as there were some places were it was too
slow. So, using this feature I was able to successfully manipulate
the footage to speed up to engage audiences as well as stir up the
climax and excitement within the Horror Teaser Trailer.
I used this especially throughout the end scenes in which the
character Eve is running, I wanted to capture the fear and tension
as she runs so sped it up in which I than pose to match this up with
my further scenes to ensure that all the footage matches and goes
continuously in order with one another.
7. Wednesday 16th January,
Period 3/4
Problems I did encounter…
Whilst editing, I did encounter minor problems that slightly
interfered with editing, such as the footage being offline in which I
had to save my progress and come out of the software site and
wait a while to fix all bugs and issues out, this was rather time
consuming and set me back a bit however I remain committed
and waited out this process to which the program fixed itself. After
a period of waiting the program eventually loaded itself and I was
allowed to continue on editing for our teaser trailer.
Another problem I did encounter was the audio, some pieces of
the footage was offline meaning that I could not access the
sound, this did leave me at a disadvantage especially as I was
fixing the sound, another important and key feature for our teaser
trailer as it engages the audience and pulls them into the
narrative.
As the editing is now progressing onwards, sound is vital for us to
incorporate in so this was a main issue for me as I could not fix
the issue of lack in sound so had to result in logging off and trying
alternative computers in hope that the sound still worked on
alternative systems.
