2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

question 6 evaluation
1.
2. I had to quickly learn how to use the cannon
cameras to film the film opening. This wasn’t too
hard as I had plenty of time beforehand to
practice using them and how to achieve the
different type of shots for the opening.
However, as a group, we had slight difficulties
when it came to actually filming the footage as it
was raining, and there was a risk of the camera
getting wet. We had to work our way around it
by protecting the camera and doing the shots
quickly but sufficiently.
I learnt how to film in and out of focus when
filming by slightly twisting the front lens. This
helped me achieve good footage for the film
opening.
I also quickly learned how to use the flip cameras
as they were useful for audience feedback
during the editing process.
3. Before the filming process, I learnt about
3 point lighting and how to use it
properly, with different lights. This also
included using different filters, and
knowing which colours to use for specific
scenes. For example, in our group we
used a translucent filter to soften the light
and make it more natural for a part in our
opening. We also used different tones of
orange to saturate the light, and used
blues when the light needed to be darker
and more mysterious, to add to the
tension of that specific part of the
opening.
4. I found the tripod very simple and easy
to use, so when it came to filming, it
made the process of setting up quicker.
I felt this definitely came into use when
the main character was walking or
moving, so the footage stayed in focus
and was steady. The tripod also allowed
me to learn and create panning shots for
the film sequence.
As well as using the tripod, we also hand-
held the camera to film some shots, so
the footage so it moved in the pace as
the character, and I learnt tat this allows
the audience to relate to the character
and put them in the protagonists
position.
5. As apart of the editing process, I had to
learn how to use the Apple Mac
computers, along with the programmes
on them. I quickly became familiar with
the editing software ‘ Final Cut Pro X’,
an taught myself the basics to editing
footage. If I ever wanted to learn how
to do something, I always looked up
tutorials on Youtube.
I also learnt how to turn the final
footage into an iMovie and this allowed
the final clip to be uploaded to
Youtube.
For this process I also learned how to use
programmes such as Prezi, SlideShare,
Garageband, and Blogger.com
