3. Feedback
The term feedback is often used to describe
all kinds of comments made after the fact,
including advice, praise, and evaluation.
Basically, feedback is information about how
we are doing in our efforts to reach a goal.
Feedback is information given to the learner
and/or the teacher about the learner’s
performance relative to learning goals.
4. Feedback
Feedback is integral to the teaching - learning
process.
Feedback is an ongoing process.
Effective feedback helps students to develop
their understanding and improve their
performance in relation to the standards of the
university.
Feedback is an essential part of effective learning.
It helps students understand the subject being
studied and gives them clear guidance on how to
improve their learning.
5. Feedback is a process in which the effect or
output of an action is returned (fed – back) to
modify the next action.
It is a dialogue between people which reflects
back how another person sees someone else's
behavior or performance.
6. Types of Feedback
Depending upon the nature of feedback it may be of
different types, such as:
Feedback
Positive
Feedback Negative

Feedback is
primarily
motivational
Feedback is
primarily
evaluative
Descriptive
feedback primarily
tells the student
how to improve
their performance.
Descriptive
feedback asks the
student what to do
to move their
reasoning to the
next level.
Purpose: to
encourage and
support the learner
Purpose: to
measure student
achievement with a
score or a grade
Purpose: to
improve learning
by indicating to the
student what needs
to be improved

10. Motivational Feedback
Goal is to make the learner feel good.
Feedback that is intended to encourage
and support the learner.
It does not give guidance on how to
improve the learner’s reasoning.

12. Evaluative Feedback
Goal is to measure student achievement with a
score or a grade.
Feedback that is intended to summarize student
achievement.
It does not give guidance on how to improve the
learner’s reasoning.
Since it is not intended to move students
forward in the learning process, it can be given
on summative assessments.

16. Effective Feedback
Goal is to get student to internalize the effective
feedback to use the suggested strategies
independently on future work.
Criteria-based phrases are used to describe the
strengths and weaknesses of the learner’s work.
Limits feedback to one or two traits / aspect of
quality at a time.
Students should have an opportunity to “redo” their
work based on the effective feedback.
17. Describe and Inform, not Judge.
Specific and general
Suggest what should do to improve.

20. Characteristics of Constructive Feedback
•Specific rather than general
•Focused on the behaviours rather than on the
person
•Considers the needs of the receiver.
•Directed toward changeable behaviors .
•Well timed.
•Given in limited amounts.
•Well thought out before being offered.
