Genesis of the Utkal University
• Established on 27 November 1943
• Foundation of present campus is laid down on 01 January 1958 by Dr. Rajendra Prasad
The First President of India.
• The present campus is inaugurated on 02 January 1963 by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, The
President of India.
• 30 Regular PG Departments 12 centres of Excellence, 18 Self-Financing Programmes

• MANUSCRIPTS SECTION
o Collection of 5800 manuscript on variety of writing materials such as stones, copperplates,
birch bark, palm leaves, parchments and paper had been in use to preserve the
intellectual heritage.
o Parija Library has different types of manuscripts collections .Out of which the important
collections are Vedas, Tantra, Sanskrit Puran, Dharma Sastra, Darshana, Jyotisha, Ganita,
Ayurveda, Avidan, Vyakaran, Sankrit Kavya,Gita Govinda, Alankar, Sangita, Silpa, Oriya
Puran.

accommodation to needy students

The Nalanda University: A Renowned Centre of Learning
• World’s first university founded in the 5th Century BC.
• Nalanda, Vikramashila (in Bhagalpur district of Bihar) and Taxila (now in Pakistan)
• Residential university of the ancient India
• Ancient center of Higher Education in India (427 to 1197 CE).
• Peak of the university – 7th Century, 10,000 studenst and 2000 (as reported by
Xuanzang).

Legacy of the Nalanda University
• The university attracted scholars and students from as far away as China,
Greece, Persia, Tibet, China, Korea, & Central Asia and produced great scholar
of the time.

Demolition of The Nalanda University
• Nalanda was sacked by Turkic Muslim invaders underBakhtiyar Khalji in 1193.
• The great library of Nalanda University was so vast that it is reported to have
burned for three months after the Mughals set fire to it.

as Dharma Gunj (Mountain of Truth)
or Dharmagañja (Treasury of Truth),
• Now the University is UNESCO
World Heritage Site.

Demolition of The Nalanda University
• destroyed by an army of the Mamluk Dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate under
Bakhtiyar Khalji in c. 1200 CE.
• While some sources note that the Mahavihara continued to function in a
makeshift fashion after this attack, it was eventually abandoned all together and
forgotten until the 19th century.

Revival of Nalanda University
• Former President of India, the Hon’ble Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam mooted the idea of reviving
the ancient Nalanda University while addressing the Bihar State Legislative Assembly in
March 2006.
• In the same time, the Singapore government presented the “Nalanda Proposal” to the
Government of India suggesting the re-establishment of ancient Nalanda to make it as the
focal point of Asia once again.
• In the same spirit, the State Government of Bihar was quick to adopt the visionary idea and
consulted with the Government of India on the way ahead.
• Leaders of sixteen member states of the East Asia Summit (EAS) endorsed the proposal to
re- establish Nalanda, when they met in the Philippines in January 2007
• Nalanda University Act 2010 was passed in both the Houses of the Indian Parliament. In
