5. AtLotusValleyInternationalSchool,Noida, webelievethatthereisnosubstitutefor‘education
through action’ and that exploring places, people, cultures, economic opportunities, and
technological advancements through travel, complements and completes the educational
experience. This philosophy matches our endeavour to create responsible global citizens
and dynamic leaders by bringing the knowledge of the world to the classroom as well as
encouraging students to go out into the world. These two methods are critical to create
the three pillars of global citizenship based on empathy, understanding, and international
collaboration.
In line with this mission, our students recently journeyed to the USA under a program titled
EdTerra’s East Coast Space Adventure. We chose this program for its focus on providing
students useful exposure to space exploration and technology at NASA’s Kennedy
Space Center. They also visited natural, historical, and modern marvels of Niagara Falls,
Washington, D.C., and New York City. To augment the broader program, we selected the
Young Authors Program, which ensured students’ engagement and immersion. This Student
Travel Review is an outcome of this collaborative and exploratory module that our students
of Lotus Valley International School, Noida, actively participated in. It captures the entire
journey in students’ own words and photographs. It even showcases their learning from this
engaging journey to one of the world’s most advanced nations.
I would also like to recognise the efforts of EdTerra Edventures, a company that is well
aware of co-curricular and extra-curricular goals in addition to the developmental needs
of students. We acknowledge the contribution of their staff, especially their on-journey
educator, the Journey Mentor, and Visa Assistance Services. Their professionalism has
resulted in an effortless, safe and enriching travel experience for each one of us and for the
group. Each parent may feel proud of this publication that will keep reminding their wards of
their achievements and capabilities, all lifelong.
Happy reading!

7. An educational journey to foreign lands always induces learning and excitement among
young and inquisitive students. When the destination is as diverse as the USA East Coast,
one can only imagine the myriad ways in which Indian students would absorb and construct
learning out of the many differences and similarities that mark the cultures and people of
India and the USA.
For EdTerra, an educational journey is about enabling students to construct knowledge
through a meaningful encounter with a new culture, without diluting their fun and excitement
or restricting their wandering, curious minds. EdTerra achieves this through its Program
Development Team (PDT), which comprises both Indian and international experts. The PDT
carefully designs culturally neutral projects that enable students to meaningfully observe,
record, and articulate their impressions. These tools are deployed through a process that
encourages teamwork and meaningful discussions besides recording observations through
digital means, all of which is finally synthesised into a media product that showcases the
ideas and learning of the students.
This Student Travel Review, ‘USA East Coast Space Adventure’, is one such media product
that captures the learning of the students of Lotus Valley International School, Noida, on
their journey to the Kennedy Space Center, Orlando along with Washington, D.C., New York
City, and Niagara Falls. This book serves as a window into the USA and above all, the inspiring
world of NASA, especially valuable for those students, peers, and parents who could not be
a part of the program. It showcases the intellectual and creative capacities of the students,
the credit for which is rightfully due to their parents and school.
EdTerra Edventures would like to thank Lotus Valley International School, Noida, for their
efforts and support which made this educational journey possible. We especially thank the
Principal, Dr. Ruchi Seth, for guiding us. EdTerra would also like to thank the accompanying
teachers for being so dynamic and enthusiastic. Their energy made our work easy, and
more importantly, made for a more memorable journey for the students. We encourage you
to read and relive the learning and adventures of these students through the words and
photographs that follow.

12. OUR JOURNEY
Our journey to the USA East Coast began with a great deal of
excitement as we strapped our seat belts and flew to see places
that we had only dreamt of before. Every day was unforgettable
and an adventure in itself. At Walt Disney World, all the rides that
we went to, gave us goosebumps. Riding on The Haunted Mansion
sent shivers down our spines. It was spectacular to watch the
magnificent display of fireworks at Cinderella Castle.
We spent the next two days at the Kennedy Space Center, one
of the ten field centres of NASA. At the KSC, we saw numerous
exhibits on space exploration. The experience was knowledgeable
as well as memorable.
Next, we visited another theme park and created memories for
a lifetime — Universal Studios. Riding on The Incredible Hulk
Coaster, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, and The Amazing
Adventures of Spider-Man was extremely thrilling. By the end of
the day, we were exhausted but we got a chance to relax on the
flight from Orlando to Buffalo.
It was a blissful experience to visit Niagara Falls and see the
frontier shared by the USA and Canada. While riding on the Maid
of the Mist, we felt the spray of mist on our faces. Before leaving,
we purchased souvenirs for our family members and friends.
On our way to Washington, D.C., we visited Hershey’s Chocolate
World. It was an incredible experience to see delicious chocolates
being made. Then, we went for a city tour of Washington, D.C.
and saw the Lincoln Memorial, the White House, the US Capitol
Building, and the Pentagon. We also visited the Smithsonian
National Air and Space Museum to see varied artefacts on aviation
and space travel.
After a bus ride that took about five hours, we reached New York.
From the One World Observatory, we saw a splendid view of the
city. It was interesting to know that One World Trade Center was
one of the tallest buildings in the world. Our visit to the 9/11
Memorial made us reflect about the loss of lives during the tragic
attack. Our journey to the USA East Coast was an exhilarating
experience that none of us will forget.

20. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER
Exploring the mysteries of the universe at a NASA center is like a
dream come true. During our visit to the Kennedy Space Center, we
got an opportunity to learn about NASA’s achievements in space
technology. After clicking pictures with the NASA Globe, we went
to the Rocket Garden that showcased a number of rockets used
for NASA’s space missions. We learnt about the contribution of
several men and women whose dedication and commitment has
made space flight possible for the humans. The US Astronaut Hall
of Fame celebrates the achievements of scientists, technicians,
and astronauts who have pioneered significant space missions
over the years. Learning about numerous space missions that
include Apollo, Gemini, and Mercury, was enlightening. Later, we
watched an immersive IMAX 3D movie, which showed real footage
of outer space.
AttheKennedySpaceCenter,weatelunchwithanastronautnamed
John David Bartoe. He shared his valuable experience of being on
multiple space missions. It was an amazing opportunity to pose
multiple questions to him. The interaction was mind-blowing. We
also went for a bus tour of the KSC and saw the launch pad sites,
the Vehicle Assembly Building (or VAB), the Launch Control Center
(LCC) and various other facilities. We got a chance to click group
photographs in one of the most secured places in the world.
We saw Saturn V, a type of a Heavy Lift Vehicle. We learnt that
it is the largest and heaviest rocket to be ever built. Moreover, it
is also the most expensive rocket in the world. We also saw the
Atlantis space shuttle orbiter that has interestingly conducted
about 33 successful space missions. From its first mission
conducted in 1985 to the final one completed in 2011, the Atlantis
has immensely contributed to NASA’s success story. Through an
audio-visual experience, we also learnt about the mission that led
to successful landing on the moon. The simulated shuttle launch
experience was a thrilling experience as we understood how
astronauts feel going into space. Additionally, we were exposed to
a number of research projects that NASA is leading in the field of
space exploration.
During our visit to the Kennedy Space Center, we learnt about
the history of space exploration. It taught us the importance of
grit, determination, and resilience besides the need to strive for
excellence in life. It was an unforgettable experience that will
always remain ingrained in our minds.

28. AMUSEMENT PARKS
On our journey to the USA East Coast, we visited two amusement
parks in Orlando — Walt Disney World and Universal Studios.
At Walt Disney World, we met some of our favourite animated
characters. It was thrilling to watch the colourful Disney parade.
We were amazed to see Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Cinderella,
Donald Duck, Goofy, and Princess Jasmine. We clicked many
photographs along with the most cherished Disney and Pixar
characters.
At Walt Disney World, we rode on Splash Mountain and it was quite
adventurous. The Haunted mansion was scary, but we enjoyed it
thoroughly. We also experienced The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror,
which lived up to its name. As we went past through the dark zone,
we hurtled and screamed through the drops and rises of the ride.
Our visit was concluded by witnessing the magnificent display of
fireworks at Cinderella Castle.
We also visited Universal Studios that left us surprised and excited.
Riding on the roller-coasters seemed dangerous, but we overcame
our fears as soon as we embarked on some of them. The Krakatau
Aqua was one such ride. We also rode on The Incredible Hulk
Coaster, which is known to be one of the fastest roller-coasters
in the world. Its top speed is known to be about 108 km/hr. It was
terrifying in the beginning but later, we were awestruck by the thrill
and excitement.
Another ride called The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man was
a virtual reality experience with Spider-Man leaping off several
buildings while fighting villains. The simulated experience of a free
fall from the top of a building was exhilarating. Another amazing
ride was Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey that took us
inside the world of wizardry. Not only did we meet Harry Potter and
his friends but we also encountered Hogwarts Castle and fought
Dementors as well as Death Eaters. The atmosphere was really
vibrant inside the Marvel Super Hero Island with its immersive
experiences built using hi-tech infrastructure. We also went on a
few water-rides such as Jurassic Park River Adventure and Toon
Lagoon. Our day ended soon and we left from Universal Studios
awaiting our next adventure.

36. NIAGARA FALLS
Our planet has some of the most diverse and magnificent forms of
natural beauty, but the division of the earth into several countries
by humans has often prevented us from appreciating the true
wonders of nature. Niagara Falls lies at the border between
Ontario in Canada and New York in the United States. It is a group
of three waterfalls, namely American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and
Horseshoe Falls. Besides a natural wonder, the waterfall is known
to be a substantial source of hydroelectric power.
Our journey to Niagara Falls started when we left from Orlando to
go to Buffalo. After reaching Buffalo, we boarded a bus to reach
Niagara Falls State Park. We spotted different types of flora and
fauna inside the park. One could choose to go on a hiking trail
inside the huge natural park. We saw that a large number of tourists
were there. We trekked towards the Prospect Point Observation
Tower from where we saw a stunning view of the waterfall. All of
us were spellbound by the scenic beauty of the place. We had seen
Niagara Falls in pictures before, but witnessing it in person was a
mesmerising experience. The flow of water from a height at such
a high speed was a wonder in itself.
Later, we went for a ride on the Maid of the Mist ferry. Before
boarding the ferry, all of us were given raincoats to protect us from
the spray that the waterfall’s powerful descent generated. As we
got closer to the waterfall, its cascading roar filled our ears and
we had to shout to make ourselves heard. It was an exhilarating
experience. The wind and light spray of water on our faces made
us feel surreal. We captured many beautiful photographs of the
waterfall before we had to put away our cameras and prevent
them from getting wet.
After the ferry ride, we went to the Aquarium of Niagara. We found
out that it is home to a large number of penguins and seals. There
were many exhibits highlighting the importance of conservation
and preservation of aquatic life. We were amazed to see that there
was an exclusive section for rescued marine animals. Our visit to
Niagara Falls was a magnificent experience and we wish to visit
there again.

“
44. NEW YORK CITY
Our last destination on our trip to the USA East Coast was New
York City. The megapolis dazzled us with its glittering skyscrapers,
cultural vibrancy, and commercial hubs. Our first stop was the One
World Trade Center (also known as Freedom Tower). We paid our
respects at the 9/11 Memorial consisting of two huge, man-made
pools into which two giant waterfalls cascade. The walls of the
pool were inscribed with the names of all the victims of the tragedy.
It was a humbling experience to reflect about the misery of those
families who had lost their loved ones. Our mood changed when
we took an elevator to the One World Observatory on the 102nd
floor of the Freedom Tower. We were filled with excitement as we
looked out at the panoramic view of the city’s glittering skyline and
the Hudson River.
After eating lunch, we went for a bus tour of the city. The streets
were lined with cafés filled with large crowds of people. We saw
the Brooklyn Bridge during the tour. Rockefeller Center amazed us
with its art and sculptures besides various shops, restaurants, and
gardens. We also visited Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, an imposing
neo-Gothic church located across Rockefeller Center.
Later, we drove past Fifth Avenue, one of the most exclusive
shopping districts in the world, and the Empire State Building — an
iconic landmark symbolising the greatness of the USA. Our trip
to New York would have remained incomplete without visiting the
famous Broadway Theatre. It was exciting to see the huge crowds
lining up for shows. Our last stop was Times Square. We had only
seen it on television until then. Times Square is known for its digital
billboards besides numerous restaurants, shops, and photo-stops.
In New York, we were wonderstruck by the huge skyscrapers and
their stunning architecture. By the end of the day, all of us were
completely exhausted but the experience was worth it. On the last
day of our trip, we were really thrilled to visit the Statue of Liberty.
Our excitement grew as we took the ferry to Liberty Island. The
statue of Lady Liberty was completely awe-inspiring and made us
reflect on the values of liberty and equality that the USA stands for.
Our exposure to culture and history on this trip inspired us to gain
knowledge. There were so many unforgettable moments on this
journey. We are grateful to EdTerra Edventures for giving us such
an amazing opportunity.
