3. Meaning
Helping a person to develop in the desired direction and to orient
him/her according to the needs and demands of changing times and
society.
Guidance helps the individuals to adjust to the environment.
Guidance as the promotion of the growth of the individual in self-
direction.
It is a process of providing assistance given to an individual to solve
their problems.
Guidance is an all-round assistance given to an individual in all
aspects of development.
Guidance refers to an advice and a relevant piece of information provided by a
superior, to resolve a problem or overcome from difficulty.

4. Specific Meaning
3. Guidance as a Sub-Process of education in which developmental
needs of the learners are considered the basic points.
2. Guidance as a General Service and is considered to be
synonymous with education and educational processes; and
1. Guidance as a Specialised Service whose primary concern is with
the individual and to help them to solve their problems and take
appropriate decisions in their choice-points;
There are usually three connotations attached to the word
guidance :

5. Definition of Guidance
According to Emery Stoops: “ Guidance is continuous Process of helping
Individual to develop the maximum of his capacity in the direction of most
beneficial to himself and to society”
According to Skinner, “Guidance is a process of helping young persons learns
to adjust to self, to others and to circumstances.”
Arthur, J. Jones (1963) : “Guidance is the help given by one person to
another in making choices and adjustments and in solving problems.”
Secondary Education Commission (1964-66) : ” Guidance involves the difficult art of
helping boys and girls to plan their own future wisely in the full light of all the factors that
can be mastered about themselves and about the world in which they are to live and work.“

means if helps the students in making

In order to adjust in different situation either

problems. One must have details information
about the same. This is possible by proper
guidance. Guidance orients one about the
problem of career planning, educational
