The document discusses ecodesign and energy labelling regulations for refrigeration equipment in the European Union. It provides background on ecodesign and energy labelling, outlines the key requirements for different refrigeration product categories like condensing units and refrigerated cabinets, and notes that a draft regulation for commercial refrigeration is pending but may take effect in June 2019. The document is intended to help refrigeration manufacturers understand the impact of evolving EU regulations on their products and business.

Ecodesign: what? & why?
More than 80% of the environmental impact of a product is
determined at the design and most of the costs are committed then.
Ecodesign is an approach to design a product taking into account the
environmental impacts during the whole of its life cycle, but not lowering
its functionality, safety, affordability or impact on consumer health.

The products have been grouped in “Lots”, so that all products
belonging to the same lot are subject to the same EU Regulation
because they perform similar functions.
Ecodesign
Only products that conform to the requirements of the
regulations may be sold on the European market.

Energy labelling
Energy labels show how an appliance ranks
on a scale from A to G according to its
energy consumption.
Energy labels enable customers to choose
products that consume less energy and
thereby save money.
Energy labels are mandatory for all
appliances sold in the EU for which a label
requirement (or regulation) exists.

In practice, the cooling demand (PR) and the refrigeration capacity (EER) are measured at 4
different temperatures:
A

D
For temperatures
other than A, B, C, D:

The values obtained from the
measures in points B, C and D must

Increasing capacity modulation…
ON-OFF cycling is not efficient as
the refrigeration circuit needs time
to reach the nominal efficiency.
This area represents the increase of
efficiency at part load.
A refrigeration application is
working for the largest part of the
time at partial load.
