2. Idea Generation
• Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
• Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles, techniques
and conventions that we have looked at in previous sessions. Explore
how you could interpret the song differently using different methods
• You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images, mind maps,
etc
• For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate these
4. Idea one
• Song idea - Catch me outside: Ski Mask The Slump God
• The current music video with this song is very colorful and vibrant.
Also it has lots of small edits such as making his eyes a lot bigger or
when he moves there is a trail behind him. This suits the song as it
has random aspects to it so adding random edits like fire or having it
blurred goes well with the video. If I choose this song I would have
effects that match the lyrics such as when he says “looney toons” I
would add a character from that so it gives off a trippy effect.
5. Idea two
• Song idea - Jocelyn Flores: XXXTENTACION
• For this music video I am going to do a artistic video which has nature
and a scenic feel to it instead of someone singing the song. This is
because this song has emotion behind it and has a story which would
go well with a different music video going with it. There is no current
music video with this song so I am going to interpret it with my own
thoughts towards the song.
6. Idea three
• Song idea – All Girls Are The Same Juice WRLD
• The music video is very phsycadelic and blurry which gives of a
depressing and sad vibe to it which matches the lyrics. I would keep
that style of video as it showcases the song properly and gives you
the energy of the song. I would have 50/50 scenic and person
throughout the video because I feel like bringing some natural parts
to the video with some editing into it can give off a very nice feeling
which helps bring the song to life.
7. Mind map of ideas
[summary of ideas]
• Edits that go with the lyrics
• Trippy visuals
• Vibrant colours making the video more attractive
• Scenic clips to make the video more natural
• Small edits to make the video more interesting throughout the time
• Add different styles of visuals so it can be unique through the video
8. Summary
• 5 strengths of your ideas you could use
• Scenic clips which will be easy as I live near a lot of forests, trippy
visuals which I can get off the internet, edits that include lyrics will b
easy as I know what I need to look for, blur into non blur, lots of
colour around the person or the surroundings
• 5 weaknesses of you ideas
• It will be hard to edit the vibrant colour, finding visuals that will work
with the song, not making it look bad with the blur because it can
look to harsh so it makes the video look bad, if the edits look out of
place which match the lyrics can be making the video look cheap and
bad
9. Final idea – artist/title/info
• XXXTENTACION
• He was born 23 January 1998 but died 18 June 2018 due being shot.
He rose to fame after releasing Look at me then shortly after his
album 17 which included singles such as Moonlight, SAD! and
changes. His album 17 won the American Music Award For Favorite
Album Soul/R&B and also won the BET Hip Hop Award For Best New
Hip Hop Artist.
• He links to many artists such as Ski Mask The Slump God, Denzel
Curry, Lil Pump and many more, he had influenced a lot of people
with his music and has influenced bigger names such as Kanye West.
• He did multiple genres such as Soul/R&B, grunge, heavy metal,
mumble, Hip Hop, emo rap, punk rap, punk rock, horrorcore,
alternative rock and alternative R&B.
10. Final idea – track summary
• Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content, duration,
pace and style of the song]
• This song is about X’s friend who had committed suicide and he
addresses his pain and sadness because of it. He talks about suicide a
lot and that he cant stop thinking about her. The song has a lot of
meaning behind it so creating a music video for this will be hard as I
will have to interpret it as it needs to be without removing the
message behind it. The pace of this song is varied as it starts slowly
then turns into a medium paced rap back to a slow exit. It only lasts
around 2 minutes so having as much of an impact as possible in the
duration is the main objective of the song.
11. Final idea – your idea
• Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your interpretation,
use of imagery or narrative, genre conventions, etc]
• I am going to interpret the song as thoughtful as I can as it was a
sensitive situation for him. So having slow medium or long shots of
natural scenery could match a sad vibe that the song gives off. As we
are not allowed to be to brutal with the truth I will have to use
minimal suicide references as this is what the song is about and
awareness of how easy it is for someone to go without anyone being
able to stop it.
12. Final idea – techniques and styles
• Video techniques/style/conventions to be used [include how you
intend to implement these]
• The style I am going to go for is a depressed vibe with some nice look
natural aspects within it. Also I am going to use a lot of blur and some
colourful parts to it as it needs a bit of uplift from the dark story that
comes from the song. Also I am going with a slow tempo. The
techniques I am going to use are different angles with the shots and
different cut scenes so when we change the video it is going to
change differently such as maybe a fade in or it turns blurry then it
changes without the viewer knowing as it fades back into a clear
image.
13. Summary
• 5 strengths of your ideas you could use
• The scenery will be easy as I am near a lot of natural environments,
as it a dark message I can be as realistic as I want to, as I am having
long and medium shots I will be able to capture a lot so I can have a
lot of room for editing the image, having a slower paced video will
allow for a more depressed vibe to it so it can match the song.
• 5 weaknesses of you ideas
• It is a sensitive song so I will have to be thoughtful on what I have for
a video, there is no music video for this song so I will have to
interpret it like he would, capturing the right scenes for the song will
be hard as I need to show sadness within nature as well as the light
side of it, I am going to have to learn new techniques so I can
showcase good editing for the song as I am not experienced with
editing.
