4. Idea one
• Song: Break Free By Ariana Grande
• A guy is wrongly accused of a crime and sent to prison. He has a
breakdown in his cell – kicking the wall and banging on the door. Two
others creep behind the building to find his cell. They eventually find
it and cut him out. They run to the airport and flee the country.

• Song: Scared of the dark
• Artist: Steps
• A guy falls asleep in the lounge. He suddenly wakes up to loud music
on the TV. It’s dark outside and there’s a power cut in the village. He
looks at the window and there’s a ghostly figure looming around. He
runs around the house trying to find a way out, but all the windows
and doors are locked. He goes back to the lounge, locks the door and
jumps behind a chair to hide. The door unlocks and opens, and a
shadowy figure floats slowly towards him. He then wakes up and
realizes he had a nightmare.

until one of them slams there hands on the table, shouts abuse at
them and storms off. He slams some doors on his way out of college.
He gets to the college car park and screams.

• It tells a story that would entertain the audience.

• It’s practical for some of the scenes as I can film them in college.

• Some scenes it will be difficult to replicate because they are inaccessible (e.g court room). I could use an image
or draw it paying attention to copyright issues.
• Some scenes depend on the weather – filming must have some flexibility to adjust days according to weather.
• It depends on when facilities are free (e.g sports hall). If facilities aren’t free when I need them, I need to
manage my time so there is some flexibility around scheduling of facilities.
• Some editing might be difficult because I want to add existing content. This might be difficult because of colours
and scenery. I will use Photoshop to edit the video where necessary.
• I need to find three people to be actors. This needs to work around their schedule. I would need to co-ordinate
and give instructions to these people.

• She's an American pop singer famous for hits including One Last
time, Into you and Break Free. She did the Charity concert ‘One Love
Manchester’ in response to the terror attack at Manchester Arena.

Weeknd
• Genre info: Pop, commercial mainstream. Popular with children and
teenagers (mainly female).

11. Final idea – track summary

• The song tells a story of a relationship which ended. It has the power
to encourage the listener to move on and get on with life. At the start
of the video, it uses a star wars based theme because there is lots of
text going up the screen. This links to the sci-fi style of the video. The
song last 3 ½ minutes. It sounds upbeat and quick and positive.

12. Final idea – your idea
• Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your interpretation, use of
imagery or narrative, genre conventions, etc]
• Someone is in court for a crime they didn’t commit. They’re found guilty and
sent to prison. Two people sneak onto the prison site and cut him free when
the prison guards aren’t looking. They get him free and run to the airport
and flee the country.
• It has a soap opera feel because it’s dramatic, suspenseful and it’s set in a
soap opera environment. It has a sense of comedy as some scenes will be a
bit over the top.
• The characters will be young males, which will make it appeal to the young
audience. This breaks with the convention of the genre because the singer
won’t be involved and there won’t be any dancing. I’ve done this
deliberately to make something different and one of Ariana Grande’s other
videos has a different style which doesn’t link to the name of the song, and
it’s set in a sci-fi style which is different to conventional pop music videos.

13. Final idea – techniques and styles

• Camera
• Tracking shot: I will use this for filming the prison cell scene and when the
people helping with the escape sneak into prison. I will film it from a
distance and zoom in so the characters can be seen. This will be the best
shot for this scene because it’s easy to film from a distance.
• Over the shoulder shot: I will use this when the prisoner is escaping prison
through the window. This will be the best shot to use because if I use a
different angle, it might not get all of the shot in. If I use this shot, it will
make it easy to fit all the shot in.
• Editing
• I need to edit the brightness in some shots (the prison shot will be filmed in
a bright room. It needs to be darker to create a prison like atmosphere.)
• I might need to make the speed of the footage faster or slower to match the
pace of the song.

14. Potential research targets
I need to look at prison and court room sets. I will look at TV Shows (reality and drama). This
will give me a good idea of how to make my scene look as I need to draw it. I will look at the
different camera shots/angles. This will help me with camera positions so I can get the best
shots.
I will look on YouTube for a video of behind the scenes of a TV set. This will give me info of
how to position the camera and what angle to set them at. It will tell me about positioning
the lights and where to put the microphone to get a clear sound.
I need to look at designs of drawn characters for the court room scene. The characters will be
a Judge, Jury and Lawyers. I need to draw these because I would need to ask a lot of people
to be in this scene. I will draw everything I need in my spare time because it’s something that
will take the most time. If I did this in college, I would need to rush everything else to get
finished in time.
I need to look on YouTube for a plane taking off. This is for when the escapees flee the
country in the final scene.
I need to look for a distance shot of an airport entrance because the characters will be
running towards it. I need to use the green screen to film the running, and put the
background in front when I edit.
