1. Q2: 2. How does your media
product represent particular
social groups?
2. Age
My magazine was aimed at young adults between the
ages of around 13 to 18. This was well represented in the
models that I used within my magazine as they were all
relatively young and between the ages of 13 and 18
therefore making it easier for my consumers to relate to
the magazine. The colours I used within my magazine
also helped to represent the age group that my
magazine was aimed at because I used relatively dark
colours which suggests more maturity than if I had used
bright colours such as hot pink and oranges/purples as
that is more related to young demographics between the
ages of 10 and 13 possibly
3. Gender
My magazine has predominantly female models within it.
I think that this subverts from convention of R’n’B
magazines as they are usually dominated by male artists
especially on the front cover. On top of this my magazine
subverts from the stereotypes of female artists being
over sexualised within the genre and I choose not to
conform to this convention because of the age
demographic as it could be inappropriate for them and
also for my gender demographic as from my previous
research I could see that my target audience was going
to be mainly females.
My Female artists
Usual female artists
4. Ethnicity and Region
I think that my magazine conforms to the stereotypes for
ethnicity of R’n’B magazines. Within the R’n’B genre
artists are predominantly black and all the models I used
for my magazine were of a black background
The language that I used within my front cover, DPS and
contents page was standard English and I didn’t use any
slang. I did this because I wanted to make sure that
anyone who read my magazine would be able to
understand what is being said. It would have been
difficult if I used slang that is well known in East London
but not necessarily everywhere else meaning if someone
outside of East London read my magazine there is no
guarantee that they will understand.
5. Does the magazine reflect the representation
of the intended audience?
From my original research I gathered that my target audience would be black girls from between
the ages of 14 to 18. I think that my magazine does reflect aspects of this target audience such as
the relation to ethnicity and gender but I don’t think that I completely engaged with the target
age group as my magazine might be a little more tailored for 16 to 18 year olds rather than 14/15
year olds
