1. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL
GROUPS?
2. I wanted my magazine to be for all different social groups and
ethnicities. My models are both from an African background
but I didn’t want my magazine to be aimed at that particular
group. Typically R&B magazines use light skinned models, but I
have chosen to use dark skin models to erase that stereotype.
I also wanted to erase the stereotype of teenagers or r&b and hip hop artists being hyper and informally spoken. I
therefore used language that was formal for most of the journalism and the models expressions look calm and
formal. There is no aggressive expression on any of their faces. I came up with the masthead to be ‘diverse’. To show
the readers are diverse. The magazine is for 18-30 year olds, therefore the journalism needed to be suitable for that
age group. I have used slang words and informal language as it relates to the audience but that is kept very minimal.
By using two different models that are male and female it adds to the magazine being successful when being
purchased. By seeing two genders on the magazine, both genders are more likely to purchase the magazine.
3. My magazine is up to date as on the front cover I have added different artists famous for their
music now. In the skyline I added the names of ‘Lil Wayne & Kobe, Eminem, Kelly Rowland,
and Chris Brown. These artists will be known mostly by the social group who like to listen to
r&b and hip hop related music. Someone who listens to classical music will not necessarily
know who ‘Kobe’ is.
The colour scheme of red yellow and white is very vivid, bold and in your face. People
from this age group are known to be vivid, bold and out there. They aren’t shy to
show who they are, these colours represent being loud and out there.
4. The dps shows two people generally enjoying themselves. Once again my
target audience are at an age where they are used to having fun and
having a good time, the picture clearly shows that. The clothing that my
models are wearing are typical clothing that teenagers and people in
their late twenties would wear. This clothing (female is wearing leggings
and a vest top, male is wearing jeans and a casual t-shirt) is most likely
easy to find and it looks good effortlessly. The audience of this magazine
are people that don’t really have time to search and search for clothes,
so casual clothing is a big yes.
I have made sure that my magazine is as clear as possible. ‘How
we rose to the top’ is the main story covered in the magazine
and it shows that a life full of drug and crime does not only
destroy you mentally, but it destroys you physically. It also says
that you can turn that all around just like ‘Duaine’ did. All of my
stories are positive.
