Social group representation
1. I was aiming to represent teenage girl/ young adults (girls) (14-19 year olds) in my media product.
Their musical interest would be pop music. I feel that my magazine represents these things well.
The cover uses pink writing which is stereotypically related to girls. It’s very colourful which my
questionnaire feedback told me girls liked to have on magazines. The colour immediately shows its
for a young, adventurous audience. Coverlines like “Concert makeup musts” are very clearly aimed
towards girls. Having a boy band on the front shows that it would be for a younger girl audience
that keep up with modern music as adults wouldn’t be as interested. The heart symbol with the
connotation of “love pop music” shows a clear genre.
On the contents lots of my articles also relate to pop to make sure the genre is known – examples
include: “Best pop of the month” and “why pop is the best genre!”. These are also the kind of things
girls are interested in as well as things like “Valentines for him and for her” and “Musical jewels”.
Girls are also stereotypically quite gossipy so there is a gossip section as well as quizzes which are
always used in chick flick magazines. My purple colour scheme throughout is also to attract teenage
girls/young adults (girls). The double page spread has a full body shot of the boys and a mid shot as
girls that age will be interested in popular boy bands and will want to know about them. This is why
I have used cover lines that will attract them like “Ladies we are all single!”. The article includes a lot
of questions they would want to know and things that will interest them. Throughout I have tried to
consider the lowest age of 14 and the highest of 19 and how I will make sure to attract them both. I
think that it’s hard to get 19 year olds to be interested in a magazine like this but my list of articles
and the boy band interview I think will attract them the most.
I think my magazine represents my social group as fun, laid back and interested in what is
happening in the music industry of pop!.
