Doctor Who – Pest Control – Read by David Tennant - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUA2Z6OyifY
Narrator retelling a story, giving all the characters their voices, describing the scene and giving all the
information.
Very long script, whole video is 2 hours and 24 minutes.
Each character is given their own tone of voice, their own vocal characteristics and mannerisms, that are
consistent throughout the whole production, ensuring a clear divide between characters as they are
quickly but smoothly switched between despite them all being voiced by the same actor.
The voicing of the characters and the script have provided an easily comprehensible location, particularly
for members of the audience who have listened to the Doctor Who audio stories before, a far away
planet caught in the middle of a war.
The narration given by David Tennant is clear, gives a lot of life into the story and each character and takes
into consideration his accent and uses it to improve the quality of the voice acting. It is very clear that the
producers of this piece knew exactly what they wanted when it came to tone, expression and distinction.
His natural voice is perfect for narration and smooth and easy to listen to. It provides an equal ground on
the quality whether the audience is listening to action, description or interaction, the script is enjoyable
and captivating to listen to.
The piece also has a good quality of sound effects, as they are perfectly timed to meet the action and
embrace the drama, complimenting the script. The music has a generally chilling tone and is used with
great effect to emphasis the point in the story where the mood is required. The majority of the sound
effects that are in this audio book are that of environmental factors, aimed to help the audience picture
the scene by giving them more sensory information about what is happening around the character

Educating Josh – Should zero hour contracts be stopped? Ep.21- by Studio71 UK -
https://www.acast.com/educatingjosh/shouldzero-hourscontractsbestopped-
Educating Josh is a podcast in which four friends try to educate each other on their strongly held views on life,
politics and the world. The format of the podcast consists of a weekly basis where Josh has to answer questions
on three different stories from the past week without any research whatsoever and has to give his initial
opinion in a limited amount of time, after which the topic will be debated and the group has to try and
convince Josh to listen to their viewpoints in order for him to become more well informed on the subject.
Average episode runtime is around 35 minutes on a weekly basis.
Each episode begins in the same way, the host, Luke Cutforth, welcoming the audience to this weeks episode,
introducing the other members of the podcast and any special guests they might have, and briefly explaining
the premise of the show. Typically they will then move on to discussing the previous episodes topics, before
swiftly moving on to the stories from the past week.
Throughout the podcast, there is obviously the vocals of the discussion being played but there’s also music to
be considered into the editing process of a project like this. The introduction has it’s own jingle and as we move
further into the conversation there’s still a constant tune playing quietly in the background with a good beat,
that increases in volume during breaks or moments of silence to fill the space. The actual recording in the
studio is of a moderately good condition, its clear and smooth but lacks certain brio before the sound quality
could be considered anything more just above standard.
The producers ensure that the editing of the piece runs smoothly, editing out any fumbling sentences,
awkward pauses and any comments that could cause damage to the reputation of anyone associated with the
podcast
5. Idea Generation/Initial Reaction
The brief has asked for a short ghost story based in the radio drama format. From the existing
product research completed, the key essentials of a project like this have been made clear. The
obvious next step is to begin research to find a short one to two minute long ghost story that will
be easily adaptable to a radio drama script, with at least one character and narrator to describe
the scene to the audience. The script will also have to include all the audio ques that will be
edited into the piece, which considering the genre of the drama could include a varity of sound
effects that will create the correct soundscape, as well as when the music will have to come in if
there is any added to the final edit. From past projects, I’ve found that natural sound effects are
much easier to achieve than any that are more industrial or ‘paranormal’, which pulls towards
finding a story which can be set in an outdoor setting and can easily be provided for. I am hoping
to find a story that if not already set in a forest, could be adapted to be, as the soundscape for
that environment is something that I am confident in understanding and knowing that what I
record will be suitable for the place in which the story is set. Another thing that I know I need to
think about is that the story is expected to be quite short but ghost stories usually take time to
build suspense, most likely suggesting that the story I will choose will be for children, meaning
that I will have to try my best to adapt it slightly to make the story a bit more interesting and
adding some sort of mystery into it, such as a cliff hanger.
6. Story
http://www.scaryforkids.com/three-wishes/
An elderly man was sitting alone on a dark path. He wasn’t sure of which direction to go, and he’d forgotten
both where he was traveling to. He also couldn’t remember who he was.
He sat down for a moment to rest his weary legs, and suddenly looked up to see an elderly woman before him.
Her skin was wrinkled and grey and her nose was crooked, warts covered her hairy chin.
She grinned toothlessly and said with a cackle, ”Now your third wish. What will it be?”
“Third wish?” The man was baffled. “How can it be three wishes if I haven’t has a first and second wish?”
“You’ve had two wishes already,” the old hag said, “but your second wish was for me to return everything to
the way it was before you had made your first wish. That’s why you remember nothing; because everything is
the way it was before you made any wishes.” She cackled at the poor man. “ So it is that you have one wish
left.”
“All right,” he said hesitantly,” I don’t believe this, but there’s no harm in trying. I wish to know who I am”
“Funny,” said the old woman as she granted his wish and disappeared forever. “That was your first wish…”
7. Proposal
Working Title: The Dark Path
Audience:
Due to the genre of the radio drama being ghost story, the short nature of the piece allows a wider audience
as there isn’t a wide spread of time available for graphic and descriptive scenes that may disturb a younger
audience, allowing the minimum line to be lower than the average radio show at 12+. However, the average
age of the audience may be affected by the time that the story comes on. Generally speaking when it comes to
radio drama, there is no pull in either direction when it comes to gender, however due to the genre of the
piece, it may allow for more male listeners. Radio has become a dying medium, with most people preferring
the more modern ways of getting their information and entertainment such as TV and phones, leaving a much
smaller group of people who tune in. The two most likely members of any radio station audience during the
day tend to be working class adults on their way to work in their cars, and members of the 60+ middle class
throughout the day up to the late afternoon. Therefore the product must be made available at a time that is
most suitable for the wide audience, which would be somewhere between 5 to 6 in the afternoon, when the
majority is on their way back from work and the young and older members are already home.
Project Concept:
The Project concept has come from researching the radio drama format and finding a simple story that will be
easy to turn into a script for the voice actor to read, with clearly defined characters and tone of voice. The
story I choose needs to be easy to follow along and have a limited amount of descriptive lines as the piece is
only meant to be between one to two minutes long, meaning that the final edit will have to be decisive and
effective in order to convey the feeling of the story in a very short amount of time.

13. Daily Reflection Day 1
Wasn’t in college due to Aesthetic film festival, but was able to get a recording of one sound
effects needed during one of the panels as it took place in an old low building along the river and
there was a strong draft coming from behind me through the gaps in the windows, allowing me
to get a 30 second sound clip that will be very useful for the soundscape of my story.
Daily Reflection Day 2
I spent some additional time researching how to get all of the sounds that I wanted to use, and
began experimenting with what I can do to the music, as I haven't done an audio project before
and would like to be able to see what I can effects I can add to it. I have spoken to a voice acting
friend that may be willing to help me record the audio, hopefully meaning that I will be able to
get a higher quality of acting for this project. More natural soundscape noise was recorded after
college.
14. Daily Reflection Day 3
I was able to get a hold of the voice actor that I know, who I was able to record using his own
equipment to maximise the quality of sound that I was getting as his microphone was much
better than any sound recorder I would have been able to find. He was able to briefly explain
what I needed to do to do in order to use his set up. Overall we were able to do about 3
recordings before I was certain I got what I needed, having given some small direction with how I
wanted each character to sound as well as the overall tone of the script. Once back in college I
put the recording into the editing software, being able to begin adding the music and
soundscape.
Daily Reflection Day 4
I spent the fourth day working on cutting down the music to fit into the recording correctly and
doing my best to try and edit the volume so that it would increase in the right places in order to
build suspense. The audio of the wind I had recorded earlier on was harder to work with than I
had expected as I didn't realize how many voices you could hear in the background, so I tried a
few different things in order to minimize it, looking at YouTube videos and trying out random
effects to see what they would do as I'm still not that comfortable with audio production.
16. Research
With my research I looked at products that interested me and each was a
different style of audio product, meaning that it allowed me to look at what
the requirements of other types of products, as something more like the
Doctor Who audio book would require very thourough and careful recording
sessions, making sure that every word sounds exactly the way that it should,
whereas a podcast is much more of a casual conversation recording but in
order to improve the overall quality of the product you would have to focus
more on the additonal editing such as transition sounds and music, to make
the product seem more profesional, as the audio quality of the conversation
may be good but the quality of the speech itself (talking over each one
another, stuttering or misprounanciation). I think the research helped me
with understanding where I need to have my focus during production, as I
understood that I needed a strong script that could be recorded easily
without anything making it too difficult to produce to a high quality, as well as
looking at the soundscape.
17. Planning
I feel that I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted this project to be when
production started, as I was able to complete my planning in time which
saved me from having to panic about what I was meant to be doing. My initial
reaction I think was quite appropriate to what the final product ending up
being and it was able to set the tone for the rest of my ideas when it came to
planning. I think the hardest part of the entire planning process was probably
actually finding the story that I wanted to adapt into a radio script, as all of
the stories that I was finding that fit into a reasonable time frame were much
more childish than what I was hoping to work with, but after looking over
many sites and some books I was able to find something that I was easily able
to put into a radio drama format. The sound effects and resource lists were
quite helpful during production as they helped me remember what I needed
for editing when I got stuck, so knowing at the end of the day what I needed
to find before the next lesson meant production could run smoothly.
18. Time Management
My time management during this production could have defiantly been
better as I wasn't able to complete all of the editing during the time we were
given for production and I was unable to complete the pro-forma as we
moved on to the next project. I do however feel that the beginning part of my
project was organized much better and I was able to get through my research
and planning in a more composed way, providing a good starting place for my
production which meant that once it was time for recording and editing I
didn't have to waste time trying desperately to finish the my planning so I
even knew what I would be recording, allowing me to start looking at what I
needed for my soundscape from the start.
19. Aural Qualities
The quality of the voice recording I think is really good and that will come from the
recording equipment that I had the opportunity to use. The audio is really clear and picks
up the script really well whilst blocking out things likes breathing or moisture from the
actors mouth. As for the actual reading of the script the voice actor I used does this for a
living and is well experienced in creating voices for different characters as well as being
able to set the tone for a story with his voice, which was very helpful in the overall
production as it meant I didn't have to rely on editing or the soundscape to make sure
that the menaing of the script came across correctly. As for the music I included I really
tried my best to make sure that it would fit in with the different parts of the story, to help
build suspense and editing the song so that the parts of the song with different speeds to
match the storyline. As for the soundscape I tried to include things such wind blowing to
really enhance the fact that the story is meant to be set in a forest, trying out different
tools to see what would make the audio I had gathered fit into the story and sound the
way that I wanted it to.
20. Audience Appeal
I think that the audience appeal of this product does fit in with the target group that
I imagined it would when planning with project, as it's short enough that it would be
able to hold the attention of a young listener which the story was aimed for. I think
the story I chose to adapt into my script works for this audience as well as it builds
up enough suspense and has a more intriguing twist than one would generally
expect from something aimed for that age group, without the story being too
intense, leaving me with a good balance between having enough tension building
up but still being able to keep the point of the entire project and making sure that it
can still be labelled as a ghost story. As for the audio quality and how it affects
audience appeal, I don’t think there is a bad side to how the quality of the voice
acting came out in relation to this, but I think that it can be said that when it comes
to audio products aimed towards children the audio quaility can sometimes be
lacking due to the fact that the target audience tends to not hold as such strong
opinions on how good quality is as long as they are getting entertainment from the
product.
