Alicja Zofia Morawska proposes creating a print guide for York's alternative culture scene. The guide would highlight music venues featuring rock and metal, bars with non-mainstream music, local bands and artists needing more exposure, and businesses catering to alternative tastes. York has a large Viking metal scene and alternative population that is underrepresented in city promotions focusing on history. The guide aims to share what the city offers for those interested in alternative culture and experiences, especially students. It will be evaluated based on a clear train of thought from initial research and plans through production.

Graphic Design – PrintMagazine
Rationale:
The brief forthisprojectthat we were presentedwithhasgivenme the opportunitytofurther
expandonthe subjectareaI’ve beenfocusingalotof myotherwork on butallowingittobe
appliedmore directlytomyownexperienceslivinginYork.I’ve beenworkinginandleaning
more towardsprintin the past yearand wantto use thisas an opportunitytodevelopskillsthat
relate tothe directionI’mthinkingaboutgoinginaftercollege,suchasphotography,bothstudio
and live performance,andjournalism.Inpastprojects,I’ve beenabletoapplymyown
understandingof the culture thatIwant to focuson andfeel confidentinmyownresourcesto
make the product reality.
Project Concept:
What I want tocreate forthisprojectis a essentiallyasmall printguide forthe more alternative
membersof York'spopulation, asa wayof beingable toshare what there isto experience inthe
cityfor people whofall intothatlifestyle category.Ithinkthatthisisworthdoingbecause the
culture isn’tverywell representedincomparisontothe demandforit, the people whowould
wantto come to these eventsdon’tknow thatthey’re there.Thisisespeciallytrue whenitcomes
to the humongousstudentpopulationwhofall directlyintothe age range of mytarget audience,
that won’tknowwhere togo to findlike-mindedpeople andexperience whatthiscityhasto
offerthatsuitsthemand theirtaste.
I wantto be able toinclude musicvenuesthathave performancesfromthe rockand metal genre,
bars that don’tplaythe mainstreamsongsthatyou wouldexpecttohere if youwalkedintoa
more mainstreamestablishment,local bandsandartiststhatwouldappeal tothe targetaudience
that needmore exposure, aswell asYork’sratheruniquelylarge concentrationof VikingMetal
artistsand fans, and local businessesthatcaterto the alternative culture whetherthat’sthrough
the productsthat theysell orthe servicestheyprovide.Theseplacesdoexistin Yorkbuttheyare
neverputat the forefrontof advertisingforthe citybecause itdoesn’tnecessarilyappeal tothe
mass population, andit’sbecause of thisthatIwant to be able to write forthe targetaudience
that isn’tbeingaddressed.
In comparisontoothercitiesinthe north of England, there isn’tasmuch representationforthis
culture, due tothe nature of York as city.York is expectedtokeepastrongholdontoits history
and that can be counterproductive whenlookingatadaptingthe city to the new culturesthat
populate it.PlacessuchasLeedsor Manchesterare able toaccommodate eventsandshowsthat
York justdoesn’thave the space for,and I wantto bringforwardwhere thisalternative cultureis
made possible inYork.
2. How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
I wantto lookat the finishedproductandsee a cleartrainof thoughtthat has takenintoaccount
everythingfromthe researchstage andinitial planswheninproduction.Itwill be somethingthat
I’mconstantlyreferringbacktoand I hope that I will be able togive reasoningintoeverything
that I include inthe final piece.
