1. Task 3
What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
2. What is distribution?
➔ Distribution in film is the process in which you make
your movie available for viewing by an audience, this is
normally done through a film distributor, who would
devise a marketing strategy, how the film will be viewed
and who may set the release date for example.
4. Our film - INFILTRATOR
➔ Our film, being a spy thriller will attract an audience similar to films such as
James Bond and The Bourne Series because they are similar in story.
➔ I think that Universal Pictures would be a very suitable distributor for
‘Infiltrator’, this is because of the variety of films they produce and the
success that they have with their films. They have also produced spy
thrillers like ours for example The Bourne Series and The Spy Game, and
because they have distributed similar films and they have been a success
they it means they could do the same with ours.
5. The appeal of our film
➔ I believe that our film will mostly appeal to a UK based audience, this is
because it is British made film and its on the side of England and the MI6 so
I think that it will attract more of a British audience.
➔ However I do think it is able to attract a worldwide audience, mostly in
America, this is because American’s are usually very interested in British
affairs and so may be interested in our film.
➔ Also films like James Bond, has managed to bring in a worldwide audience,
however I think that this is because of how well known the James Bond
franchise is
6. Marketing Strategies
➔ There are many different ways in which we could
market our film out to an audience and to add to its
popularity, this includes:
◆ Advertisement - Billboards, Posters, TV adverts
◆ TV coverage - Chat Shows, News
◆ Radio - Advertising, Interviews
◆ Online - Social Media, Website, Film Blogs
◆ Press Screenings
7. Self-Distribution
➔ Self distribution is the case where the producer of the film decides to go down the
route of distributing their film themselves
➔ Advantages of this include:
◆ We obtain all rights to the film - this means we can decide where and how the
film is shown.
◆ Also by self distributing our film, we receive all profits made from our film
➔ However this method does come with disadvantages including:
◆ It would be very time consuming - chasing buyers, paperwork etc.
◆ Limits options for sales as distributors have contacts and relationships with
buyers that we don't have.
➔ I think I would consider self-distribution because it would give us the chance to be
independent and have control over where are film is shown, however the negatives
to this makes me think that we should use a distributor because this will give more
options for our film and could mean it becomes more successful.
