1. What kind of media institution
might distribute your media
product and why?

2. What is Distribution?
Film distribution is where a company or film distributers will go
through certain steps in order to achieve success when
releasing a film. Some of these steps include:
• Acquiring the rights to actually release this film.
• Coming up with release strategies such as “when the film will
officially be released” and “where it is going to be released
i.e. web, cinema, TV etc.
• Present the film to exhibitors in cinemas or whatever platform
the distributers decide to release their product on
• Create a marketing campaign to create the “must see” buzz
to their target audience of their product.
3. Ways of distribution include…
Trailers, Posters, TV Commercials
Promotions
Screenings
Public Relations e.g. interviews, Premiers etc.
Social Media
5. Film Distribution for “Haunted
Thoughts”
I have looked at a few film distributers and haunted thoughts
would not get distributed by none of the big six film distribution
companies e.g. 20th Century Fox, Universal, Paramount etc.
Although, I did see an independent UK based film distribution
company called Metrodome. They are a London based
company and are particularly interested in films that show the
UK culture and in our case it Is a film based in Surrey in a
University so they may be interested in our film. Metrodome
was the only film distribution company that I think would be
interested in our film.
6. Is your film going to appeal to UK
audiences only?
I thin that our film will only appeal to UK audiences because it
would be quite a low budget film and if a company such as
Metrodome decided to be our film distributer, they would only
sell our film to a few cinemas in places such as London or
surrey.
7. Marketing and Release Strategies
/ Exhibition Options
When it comes to marketing and release strategies, we would
talk directly to our fans or anyone interested in our film through
social networking sights such as Facebook, Twitter, and even
speak peak YouTube releases where fans or anyone can also
comment on the videos to share their ideas about the clip.
We would be honest to our fans and / or viewers when it
comes to the exhibitions options when showing the film. For
example, Paranormal Activity showed the reaction of a scared
audience and this made people want to watch it because they
thought it would be a good film.
8. Pros and Cons of self distribution
Pros:
- You can have full retail control and rights on your film so you
can decide where your film is going to be distributed
- You do not have to give a cut of the profits to the distributers
because you basically are your own distributer
Cons:
- It can be very time consuming if you want to make profit. You
will have to chase buyers, fill in paperwork, and concentrate on
sales.
- It could limit your sales options because many distributers
have created relationships with buyers and some buyers will
not want to take risks with new distributers.
