The CMO Survey - Highlights and Insights Report - Spring 2024
Question 3
1. What kind of media institution might distribute your media
product and why?
2. To distribute our film we would need to contact an independent film distributor as all of the production aspects of
our film suggest it is independent so therefore an industrial distributor would not be an option.
Our film is clearly independent because it was produced on a very low budget, there were no A-listers involved and
both the locations used were at Elliot’s house so there were no costs for locations or actors which kept costs down.
We didn’t use any SFX when shooting the film and didn’t use any new technology when producing the film
opening, we only used some post-production effects such as dissolving transitions and filters when editing our film
in Adobe Premiere, this again suggests our film is independent.
Having established that we will need to distribute through an independent distributor I think we should use Vertigo
Films who are a UK Film and Distribution company that have distributed many films, especially in the horror genre
such as the film A Night in the Woods (Parry,2011) and have been successful in getting them noticed in the film
industry, for example Monsters which received many awards for the film was distributed by Vertigo films.
Who might your film secure a deal with?
3. The main way of getting the film out to our audience would be through web2.0 as this is a
cheap and reliable way of marketing our product, especially as our target audience are the
most active online users so this will be the most effective way of getting through to them
and giving them the most beneficial forms of advertising through social media sites and
online advertising.
Facebook could be used to create hype for the film by encouraging people to talk about the
film once they’ve seen it and Twitter will also create buzz by using hashtags, for example
#inscription could be used to see comments made about the film. A Field in England used
Twitter so effectively that they were trending number 1 in the UK on the night of the
release, so it is clearly an effective method of distribution when used correctly.
Synergistic partnerships could also be made with TV channels such as Channel 4, like a Field
in England did where they showed their film on Film4, if we could do this we could reach a
larger audience which could help to further promote the film.
Along with traditional forms of marketing such as the trailer and posters, the distributor
may use a pop-up film event or a film festival such as the British horror film festival in
London to show the film to an audience.
What might be their strategy in connecting your film
to an audience?
4. Because we are an independent film, there would most likely be a platform release so that it can be seen
across different medias, this is where a partnership with Film4 would be beneficial because it could be
streamed online as well as on TV.
We could exhibit the film in a few cinemas across the UK to gauge a response to how the audience like it and
then have a wider release to open it up to other cinemas if the response is good.
The Curzon would be a good place to show our film as not only do they exhibit in cinemas but they also have a
video on demand service that allows you to watch the film on the day of release but from the comfort of your
own home, this widens our potential audience and could increase our revenue streams.
Where might your distributor choose to try and
exhibit your film?
