What is Film Distribution?
• The distribution of a film (or movie) is
the process through which a movie is
made available to watch for an
audience by a film distributor.
Distribution of
Captain Phillips
• Distribution of the film “Captain Phillips”
was done by various distributors,
including Columbia Pictures, Sony
Pictures Entertainment and Universal
The film Captain Phillips does not
involve any investments by the
distributors.
Positioning
• The film was released in October 2013, as
after the summers, audience would need
something new and different to watch.
• The Target Audience of the movie is the
young adults and people between the
age of 25-40. In this age group, people
want more entertainment and action
every day in their lives and they are free
from watching all of the movies released
in the summers
Circulation
• Thousands of copies of the film were
circulated to the cinemas, all around
the world.
• The movie was a saturate release, it
was shown in almost every cinema, all
over the world, specially in the United
States of America.
Marketing
• The action or business of promoting and
selling products or services, including market
research and advertising is known as
marketing.
• The marketing of the movie was done through
various methods, including:
 Posters Campaign: Posters usually have a
Unique Selling Point. This campaign will help to
attract the people towards the film due to the
main image on the poster and the cast
mentioned/shown on the poster.
Marketing
Trailer: A series of extracts from a film or
broadcast, used for advance publicity.
Trailer creates an awareness and
curiosity among the people for the
movie. Like posters, a Unique Selling
Point would be there for a trailer.
Unique Selling Point of the movie
Captain Phillips is the actor Tom Hanks
and the historical based story of the
hijacking of a ship.
Marketing
Advertising: Media and advertising via
internet was done for the movie. It was
advertised on different magazines,
newspapers, billboards, websites,
television (Via Trailers)and the radio,
specially in U.S and Europe
Promotion: The film Captain Phillips was
promoted by the posters and trailers only,
as it is an action movie and made for
adults only, so promotion via toys or any
other product was not done.
Marketing
Merchandising: It helps to earn more
profit for a film, by selling various
products like shirts, blankets,
wallpapers, super hero suits, etc. Only
T-Shirts and wallpapers were out for the
movie Captain Phillips as it covers
adult/mature audience, so product
like blanket or costumes were not sold.
Exhibition
• The exhibition of film primarily involves
the ownership, management and
operations of cinemas. Exhibition is the
retail branch of film industry. It involves
not the production or the distribution
of the motion pictures, but their public
screening and usually for paying
customers in in a site devoted to such
screenings, the movie theater.
Exhibition
What the exhibitor sells is the experience
of a film (and, frequently, concessions like soft
drinks and popcorn). Because exhibitors to
some extent control how films are
programmed, promoted, and presented to
the public, they have considerable influence
over the box-office success and, more
importantly, the reception of films.
Exhibition is divided into two sections:
 Cinema: The distributor is paid by the cinema
for a copy of the film
 Home: The distributor is paid by the company
who is selling the film for a copy
Exhibition
• The distributors of Captain Phillips (depending
on the region) were paid for the given copies
to the cinemas and the total sales of the
Discs, including DVD’s and Blu-Ray’s.
• The film was released worldwide so it was
played in almost every cinema over the
world, specially in U.S and Europe.
• The movie’s budget was $50 m and the box
office was $217 m. Means, the net profit of the
movie was $167 m, so it is considered as a Hit
Movie.

Film distribution

  • 2. What is Film Distribution? • The distribution of a film (or movie) is the process through which a movie is made available to watch for an audience by a film distributor.
  • 3. Distribution of Captain Phillips • Distribution of the film “Captain Phillips” was done by various distributors, including Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Universal The film Captain Phillips does not involve any investments by the distributors.
  • 4. Positioning • The film was released in October 2013, as after the summers, audience would need something new and different to watch. • The Target Audience of the movie is the young adults and people between the age of 25-40. In this age group, people want more entertainment and action every day in their lives and they are free from watching all of the movies released in the summers
  • 5. Circulation • Thousands of copies of the film were circulated to the cinemas, all around the world. • The movie was a saturate release, it was shown in almost every cinema, all over the world, specially in the United States of America.
  • 6. Marketing • The action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising is known as marketing. • The marketing of the movie was done through various methods, including:  Posters Campaign: Posters usually have a Unique Selling Point. This campaign will help to attract the people towards the film due to the main image on the poster and the cast mentioned/shown on the poster.
  • 7. Marketing Trailer: A series of extracts from a film or broadcast, used for advance publicity. Trailer creates an awareness and curiosity among the people for the movie. Like posters, a Unique Selling Point would be there for a trailer. Unique Selling Point of the movie Captain Phillips is the actor Tom Hanks and the historical based story of the hijacking of a ship.
  • 8. Marketing Advertising: Media and advertising via internet was done for the movie. It was advertised on different magazines, newspapers, billboards, websites, television (Via Trailers)and the radio, specially in U.S and Europe Promotion: The film Captain Phillips was promoted by the posters and trailers only, as it is an action movie and made for adults only, so promotion via toys or any other product was not done.

Marketing Merchandising: It helps to earn more profit for a film, by selling various products like shirts, blankets, wallpapers, super hero suits, etc. Only T-Shirts and wallpapers were out for the movie Captain Phillips as it covers adult/mature audience, so product like blanket or costumes were not sold.
  • 10. Exhibition • The exhibition of film primarily involves the ownership, management and operations of cinemas. Exhibition is the retail branch of film industry. It involves not the production or the distribution of the motion pictures, but their public screening and usually for paying customers in in a site devoted to such screenings, the movie theater.
  • 11. Exhibition What the exhibitor sells is the experience of a film (and, frequently, concessions like soft drinks and popcorn). Because exhibitors to some extent control how films are programmed, promoted, and presented to the public, they have considerable influence over the box-office success and, more importantly, the reception of films. Exhibition is divided into two sections:  Cinema: The distributor is paid by the cinema for a copy of the film  Home: The distributor is paid by the company who is selling the film for a copy

Exhibition • The distributors of Captain Phillips (depending on the region) were paid for the given copies to the cinemas and the total sales of the Discs, including DVD’s and Blu-Ray’s. • The film was released worldwide so it was played in almost every cinema over the world, specially in U.S and Europe. • The movie’s budget was $50 m and the box office was $217 m. Means, the net profit of the movie was $167 m, so it is considered as a Hit Movie.
