How independent distributors can market psychological thriller films
1. What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
2. What is Distribution?
Film distribution is the process of making a movie available for viewing by an audience. This
is normally the task of a professional film distributer, who would determine the marketing
strategy for the film, the media by which a film is to be exhibited or made available for
viewing, and who may set the release date and other matters
3. Distribution Companies
Distribution companies are the people who share the produced movie through ads, get them screening in cinemas
and theatres; they also are the ones who put them on DVDs and Blu-ray discs.
Distribution companies are split into two kinds:
• Major
• Independent
Major
Major distribution companies mostly distribute movies made by the ‘big six’; some example are:
• Columbia Pictures
• 20th Century Fox
Independent
Independent distribution companies mostly distribute films made by independent film creators; some examples are:
• Metrodome Distribution
• Lionsgate
4. Comparison
The sort of film we have produced is a mix of unique ideas and stereotypical ideas; an example of a stereotypical
idea was that the antagonist/protagonist Peter Warne was mentally unstable and resorted to killing; this is a
stereotype because it’s saying that people who kill aren’t ‘right in the head’. An example of a unique idea was that
Peter was actually dead and not Sarah who he thought he killed.
Compared to other films that have been produced our film would fit in well with the ‘Thriller’ genre with the plot
and the psychological aspects in the opening and I believe that they will be interested in our film, because our idea
is unique and cliché at the same time so it’s a mix of your every run of the mill thriller with the twist of swapped
deaths and the psychological will give it a more brain teasing aspect for the theorists in the film industry.
Audience Appeal
Our film will not only appeal to UK audiences because of the British actors but also to a wider range audience
because the movie does not focus problems that are known to British People only. British movies are mainly focused
only on Britain and the society in it but our film would be more diverse though it may appeal mostly to a UK
audience as most of the actors are British so they have a better connection with them through the screen
5. Possible Marketing Strategies
The distributer needs to make a marketing campaign that will make their film stand out more than the other films
also coming out so they need to see theirs more than the others.
marketing strategies are key to making the film known to the public, there are many ways to get our film out there
but some ways are better than others; possible marketing strategies are:
• Posters – Placing posters around an area will catch the viewers’ attention, especially if it stands out from the
surroundings; other ways to use posters are on the side of buses, because buses are public transport and travel
everywhere placing advertisement on the side is an effective way to get our film known.
• The internet – The internet has become extremely popular and convenient for everyone and placing Ads on the
internet is also an effective idea; website can sell ad space for a wanting business so you can buy ad space on a
popular website and the users will see the ad, another way to use the internet for advertisements is on a site
called YouTube where we can add advertisement videos on existing videos so the viewer will have to watch the ad
before being able to watch the desired video.
• Cinema – In the cinema there is a period before the start of a film where there are ads for various things and films
are one of them, so to get more awareness for our movie we can add an ad for our movie on a famous film
possible made one of the ‘big six’ so in theory the awareness for their movie is also awareness for ours.
6. Self-distribution
Self distribution means that we have to distribute our own film; I have considered this and there are pros and cons
for that:
Pros
Freedom – If we self-distribute our film then we have freedom to do what we want in ways of advertisements and
can control how we advertise it.
Control – Having full control on how we advertise our film means that we can advertise it in our way and choose
what ways we advertise the film.
Saves Money – Because we aren’t hiring a professional distribution company the cost for advertising will be cheaper
and we can use that extra money for more advertisement campaigns.
Cons
Inexperience – We may be inexperienced in distribution so there is a high chance that our marketing campaigns will
fail and it will be a waste of money.
Other films using companies – Other filming companies will use professional distribution companies to advertise
their films, because they are more experienced in distribution they have the upper hand in advertisement.
