NHS Health Check Programmes
This guidance can be used alongside the NHS Health Check programme, the national vascular risk
assessment and management programme for those aged 40 74. This is an integrated approach to
identifying and preventing four diseases: diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke and kidney disease
(NHS Health Check Programme, 2009). The programme is being rolled out throughout England. The
aim is to ensure everyone aged 40 74 who has not already been diagnosed with one of these conditions
is offered a risk assessment and given advice and support to help them reduce and manage that risk.
Health check programmes are effective only if the lifestyle interventions offered prevent or delay type

The Opinion Of Henry Jenkins Essay
In the opinion of Henry Jenkins
Participatory culture shifts the focus of literacy from individual expression to community involvement
Jenkins et al (2009, pg6).
Using this explanation, this essay underlines the matters of how the entertainment industries has taken
full control through social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. Furthermore, it also typifies
how such industries emphasis significantly into its logics and practices through its audience and fan
participation. Supported Research is justified by various theorists/examples. This includes Prensky,
Katz and Blumler, Dan Gilmore, David Gauntlet, Charles Leadbeater and Jenkins himself.
According to Jenkins Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide , It spectacles that the
entertainment industry has taken the advantage of harnessing New Media on traditional formats by
focussing on the logistics and practices. This evidently helps to increase the popularity and the
availability of audience participation through the use of updated technology. This is denoted through
old technological formats via applying new interactive media to heighten the participation for
numerous audiences. For instance, back in the day many industries i.e. entertainment had to depend on
broadcasting and radio for the viewers to receive their audio or visual content. To do these industries
had to send out signals globally through a large transmitter so that people can receive their content.

Traditional American Family Essay
When the idea of a family life first began, the man was supposed to be the sole breadwinner while the
wife stayed home to cook or clean or take care of the children. A traditional American family used to
be a mom and a dad, with a few kids. However, that white picket fence lifestyle has become almost
abnormal now. Ever since the choices of divorce, homosexuality, even role reversal have been offered
to families things have never been quite the same. In the early days, divorce was an extremely
shameful thing. The concept of for better or worse truly held it s meaning. A man and a woman would
almost never split up, no matter how bad things got. Today, divorce papers can be mailed and signed
with virtually no hassle, making the ending of a marriage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A century ago, homosexuality would have been a taboo thought. A family was made of a man and his
wife, with their natural children. With the choice of homosexuality being introduced, people can now
marry whoever they want to and have kids from a surrogate, from adoption, or even from artificial
insemination has greatly expanded familial bounds. A century ago, the man of the household was the
one that brought home the bacon. His wife would be waiting for him at home with a cold beer or other
beverage and have his favorite show on if a radio or TV was available. Fast forward a century and stay
at home dads are becoming more common. Single parents are almost normal to see, and the woman of
the house is now allowed to earn a paycheck. By giving families a choice in how they want to go
about daily life has greatly changed how families work now. As Pew Research Center states it, Parents
today are raising their children against a backdrop of increasingly diverse and, for many, constantly
evolving family forms. By contrast, in 1960, the height of the post World War II baby boom, there was

Voodoo
Amanda Gutierrez
Voodoo which means spirit in Fon, was born in the West African country of Benin and is practiced by
more than 4 million believers. The origins are not well known but it is thought to have evolved from
ancestor worship and animism. While practitioners believe in only one true God they communicate
with him through thousands of different spirits and shrines. It is practiced in many different countries
and although they all have for the most part the same beliefs some of their practices are different.
Spirit possession occurs in the Birth of Voodoo when the daughter of a Voodoo priest is chosen to be a
spirit medium. She is claimed by the Earth spirit, Sakpata, and is thought to be dead; she lies for three

Also in New World Voodoo you see many people making the sign of the cross while chanting Voodoo
chants and many people are wearing a crucifix. The man becoming possessed also says the blood that

Gait Variability And Fall Risk
Gait Variability and Fall Risk in Older Adults
Abdulrahman M. Aldahmashi University of Pittsburgh Motor Learning and Control of Movement
Dr. Susan Whitney November 2, 2014
Introduction
Falling is described as resting on the ground or the floor accidently without being caused by intrinsic
incident or tremendous hazard (Ayoubi Launay, 2014; Tuunainen, Rasku, Jäntti, Pyykkö, 2014). It is
also defined as unexpected, unintended, unprovoked alteration in body position causing an individual
to be in an inferior level and not resulted from internal disturbance (Menant, Schoene, Sarofim, Lord,
2014).
Background Information
Fall is the major cause of injury in the elderly, which places more load on the health care system
(Krasovsky, Lamontagne, Feldman, Levin, 2014). Samuel D. Towne Jr. and his colleagues conducted
a study to calculate the cost of hospitalizing older people as a result of falling in Texas Hospital.
77,086 fallers were hospitalized, costing around 3.1 billion dollars in 2011, which is an increase of
around 2 billion dollars since 2007 (Towne, Ory, Smith, 2014). Moreover, fall directly causes 21,649
deaths and indirectly causes 5,402 deaths in the United States in 2010 (Stevens Rudd, 2014). Also,
420,000 individuals around the world die yearly because of falling (Mignardot et al., 2014). Most falls
in older adults take place during walking (Lee, Verghese, Holtzer, Mahoney, Oh Park, 2014).
Therefore, falls are related to gait variability

Comparing Trudeau s Polyethnic Background And Culture
Canada s identity is tremendously challenging to delineate, due to encompassing a vast population of
various cultures, traditions, and values spanning an enormous landmass. From various historical
perspectives, Canadian identity has changed over the course of the last century valuing discrete
ideologies through various time periods. Due to various government policies and acts, as well as
reformed beliefs and ideas regarding large social issues, Canada s identity has shifted and constantly
renewed its identity over the course of the past half century.
Major government policies and acts were headway into creating Canada s modern day identity. The
Immigration Act of 1976 changed Canada s perspective on immigration eligibility, and majorly
contributed towards structuring Canada s polyethnic background and culture. Prime Minister Pierre
Trudeau grew up in an extremely discriminatory climate, and believed that Canada should inherit
collective identity. Trudeau endorsed immigration to built Canada s diverse ethnic culture, and

Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson to seriously reconsider Canada s national identity. Pearson stirred up
the Great Flag Debate, that led to a divide between the English and the French those who wanted to

(2) Technology: During the Battalion of Kasserine pass US had only one Tank battalion equipped with
about M4 Sherman tanks, 105mm Howitzer, 155mm howitzers. Nazi Germany had panzers, panzer
Grenadiers, and anti tank units. Nazi Germany overwhelmed over Powered US forces with several
tank battalions (watson, 2007).
(3) Doctrine and training: US failures in this meeting occurred well before the battle began. Surprised
by the massed panzer formations of 1939 and 1940, and the ease which the Germans seemed to break
through the static lines of their enemies, the US attempted to find a solution. In 1941, the US

News Channels Are Becoming Entertainment Today
Have you wondered how much more difficult it has become to tell the difference between
entertainment and news channels on television? After all, the television channel business, worth
Rs18,000 crore in advertisement and subscription fees, is dominated by the entertainment genre. And
print, with Rs14,800 crore in revenue, is still largely about news. This is despite the fact that there are
more news channels than those of any other genre. Earlier this year, in response to a question in
Parliament, the minister for information and broadcasting announced that there are 201 news and

Who Is The Ford Mustang Commercial
Because of my love for the Ford Mustang, I chose a Ford Mustang commercial for this assignment.
The commercials premise is unsuspecting men meet a beautiful woman in a coffee shop for a blind
date, the woman purposely projects a non adventurous persona. At the conclusion of the coffee date,
the woman offers to give them a ride home in her Ford Mustang. Initially during the drive home the
woman pretends she is not familiar with driving the car, most of the men offer her instructions and one
suggests that she let him drive to show her what the car can really do. Shortly into the drive home, she
pulls into an empty parking lot and really pushes the car to the limits. She performs a multitude of
highly skilled maneuvers, burnouts, high speed stopping, drifting, etc. What all of these men did not
know is this woman is actually a professional stunt driver and is more than capable of driving this
powerful vehicle. The men s reactions were hilarious. Most of them seemed to enjoy the adrenaline
fueled ride, while others looked horrified sitting in the passenger seat. Being a bit of an adrenaline
junky myself, I really enjoyed this advertisement. I could feel my adrenaline rising as she was
performing all those high speed maneuvers. The advertisement was also very ... Show more content on

While males are the intended audience, it also appeals to females. By using the female stunt driver that
illustrated just because she is a beautiful woman, does not mean she does not know how to drive or
that she needs a man to show her. By using comedy, the creators appeal to the resistant and neutral
audience. Even if the audience were not interested in the Ford Mustang, they would watch this to see
the men s reactions. The sympathetic audience appeal was easy to obtain by the creators. Besides the
comedic values, the adrenaline charged ride and the car itself are enough to win the

Synopsis Of The King Of The Flies
It s another one of Aber Hael s main attractions. People come from all over for our wares, but
especially the seafood. I tell you, these people can fry, pickle, and salt anything.
Carlton removed Audra s arm from this elbow and took her hand instead, threading his fingers
between hers. It ll be easier for us to move along this way.
The king pointed out his knights skirting the edge of the crowds. As you can see, I make sure lots of
knights are available on market day to help keep the peace. It s usually calm, but in the warmer
weather when people have too much to drink, things can get rowdy. That s where our men come in.
Audra and Carlton walked from stall to stall and examined the wares without much fanfare. Audra
particularly liked the small charms and sun catchers offered at one stall. She admired a sun catcher of
a beautifully detailed red dragon flying above the clouds over a rushing river, Hael River, she
assumed.
A robust, white haired woman, the stall s merchant, approached. That s one of my favorites. Isn t that
beautiful?
Yes, I love it. Do you make these? Audra turned the sun catcher that hung from a hook so it would
better reflect the light.

old woman clearly recognized him right away and could not speak. She curtseyed low immediately.

Analysis Of The Log From The Sea Of Cortez
Enduring Perspectives
By studying the history of Native Americans, we can understand some of their characteristics,
qualities, and perspectives regarding America s landscape. Many of these still persist today in either
the original or a mutated form. The Native American quality of living unsustainably persists today in
various forms because it is difficult to notice an unsustainable lifestyle. John Steinbeck, Barry Lopez,
and Scott Momaday in The Log From the Sea of Cortez, The American Geographies, and The Way to
Rainy Mountain describe this effect.
Today, it is easy to look back and see that Native Americans, including the Micmac, lived
unsustainable lifestyles. The Micmac s economy revolved around trading small animals (e.g. beavers).
Their desire for European goods provided an incentive to deplete the animal population (Merchant
13). A problem with this lifestyle is that it is difficult to know that the animal s population is being
depleted until it is too late.
The Native Americans of the Great Plains centered their economy on the buffalo. The Native
Americans used difficult techniques (e.g. tricking them to fall off cliffs) to catch the buffalo, which
was unsustainable considering how important the Buffalos were for them (Merchant 16). When the
horse arrived the Native Americans became more efficient hunters. However, their lives became less
sustainable because they became dependent on the horse and buffalo population. Again, this is a
problem because it is difficult

Sustainability, Well Being, Welfare Essay
Keywords: sustainability; well being; welfare 1. Introduction
The term sustainability has ended up prevalent in arrangement situated exploration as a declaration of
what open strategies should accomplish. The essential motivation originated from the Brundtland
Report of 1987 (1). From that point forward the idea has moved in importance. This paper contends
that the movement is terrible in that it darkens the genuine inconsistency which exists between long
term maintainability and transient welfare. Also, the refinement between three pillars of sustainability
is reasonably fluffy. We propose a definition that returns to the first sense in which the idea was
expected.
Notwithstanding, this paper does not profess to offer a far reaching perspective of the issue of
maintainability. It displays a basic perspective of how the term is utilized as a part of approach open
deliberation and in effect evaluation the arrangement of strategies utilized as a part of connected
exploration to assess strategies and undertakings.
2. Backgrounds
The idea of sustainability was initially instituted in ranger service, where it implies failing to harvest
more than what the timberland yields in new development The word Nachhaltigkeit (the German
expression for sustainability) was initially utilized with this significance as a part of 1713. The worry

The Importance Of Extracurricular Activities
Many students at all levels of education are involved in extracurricular activities they are a core part of
the educational experience. But,are they helpful or harmful to students education. To further look at
this issue my group and I decided to reasearch this topic to find out if there was a correlation between
extracurricular activites and student success. Going into this topic our hypothesis was.If a student
participates in extracurricular activities then the student is more likely to succeed in school.
To gather data we created a survey. This survey included five questions, three strongly agree to strongly
disagree, one yes/no question, and one multiple choice question. We surveyed 44 students both male
and female students grades ninth to eleventh as we felt that in these grades students would be most
involved in extracurricular activities.
The first question on the survey was. Do you participate in extracurricular activities? Which from the
people surveyed was a unanimous yes. This was expected due to the sheer number of people who
participate in extracurricular activities as well as the variety of extracurricular activities.
Question two. How much time a day do you speand participating in extracurricular activites? For this
question in general both males and females from all the grades on average said three to four hours
which was fairly expected as three to four hours is a long amount of time but not long as the other
choice five to six hours or as short as one to two

with information regarding the five major record labels; BMG, Universal, Sony, Warner, and EMI.
These five labels control about 80% of the market share in the record industry (Brown). The article

My Experience With Severe Anxiety
When I reflect on everything that has happened thus far in my lifetime, I am amazed at how far I have
come. I was born on May 31st, 1998. My mom was in college when she had me, and my father
worked two jobs to support the family. They worked incredibly hard to make sure that I had a good
and comfortable life. They never gave up, even when they were loaded with their many
responsibilities, because they cared so much for me and my future. I truly admire them for that. They
instilled the value of preserving, and never giving up, no matter how tough your challenges in life are.
This value is very important to me, and I believe that I would not be where I am today if I didn t stay
true to this value. This value has been especially important when I have had to deal with severe
anxiety.
I have dealt with anxiety my entire life. The anxiety became especially intense during my freshman
year of high school. It began to severely interfere with my schooling, to the point where I could not
even attend school. I many attempts to continue to attend school, but these attempts would often end
with me having a severe panic attack. This constant failure to attend school sent me into a bout of
depression. All of these factors led to the decision for me to be put into home hospital, where I would
do all my schoolwork at home, and work with a teacher who came to my house for an hour each day.
This would allow me to focus on receiving professional help with my anxiety. I met with a therapist

Postcolonial Literature (Persepolis Things Fall Apart)
There are many different critical approaches to studying literature. With reference of both texts you
have studied, show what you believe the value to be in using a particular critical approach.
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi follow a postcolonial critical
approach. Both books take place in a country considered politically inferior through western
perspective and both texts, even though reinforce colonialists oppressive ideology, don t stand
completely against the colonialists and fault their own culture. They present the themes of dislocation

This statement is one of the most significant to understand the postcolonial view of the novel, by
referencing its title with the imagery of a knife breaking things apart expresses not only the cruel
overpowering intentions of the colonialists but also the vulnerability of the Igbo culture. And lastly, as
the book ends with Okonkwo s suicidal tragic death it represents the futility and inefficiency in over
fighting colonizing forces and the downfall of the protagonist is the final indication of the Igbo culture
falling apart. Similarly, in Persepolis the protagonist Marji, also experiences the frustration of western
overpowering influence on her culture. There are innumerous moments in Marjane s childhood in
which she suffers from prejudgments due to the Iranian stereotypes. For example, when she is
travelling outside the country for the first time she realizes that as soon as they learn our nationality,
they go through everything, as though we were all terrorists. They treat us as though we have the
plague. This simile comparing being Iranian with having a disease victimizes the Iranian people, as it
equates racism to an irrational and condemning repugnance. By sharing a young Iranian naïve girl s
experience, westernized readers are presented with another perception and hopefully are able to
overcome their own preconceptions. However Satrapi also condemns her conservative government by
revealing the hypocrisy of the teachers as they ask the children to tear

Ethical Problems With Drones
Ethical Problems with Drone Usage Drones are a new and versatile technology with a multitude of
positive commercial, private, and governmental uses. They are much more than just an invasion of
privacy, when used in the hands of an experienced pilot with a good moral compass. Commercial
Drone Use Tim Yakaitis of Connecticut uses drones for filming property for real estate listings and

drones are a reasonably new niche for public drone use, due to the recent innovation of working quad
rotor drones versus the typical single fixed blade like a helicopter (Rothstein, 2015). Quad rotor

George Bernard Shaw s Pygmalion
George Bernard Shaw lived in a time where there was a great divide between the upper and lower
classes of England. The rich were becoming increasingly wealthier, while the poor dug deeper and
deeper into debt. Similar to American society today, the upper class looked down upon the lower class
for their outward appearance (the way in which they spoke and dressed). People such as antagonist
Henry Higgins of Pygmalion, in fact, only focused on a person s facade; they were completely
ignorant to people s true identities. As a social activist during the early 1900s, Shaw chose to introduce
the incorrect judgment placed upon working class citizens to his wealthier audiences within his play
Pygmalion. Henry Higgins finds poor flower girl Eliza and determines her a lost soul, deciding
immediately he could better her as a person through phonetics and etiquette classes. What is unclear to
Higgins, however, is that Eliza s character is already built. In Higgins opinion, her accent and outfit of
choice are undeniably inadequate. What he fails to recognize, though, is Eliza s heart and intelligence
her true identity. He makes it his duty to play God, transforming Eliza into what he deems a
respectable lady, but pays no mind to her inner self. Shaw uses Eliza s outer transformation and her
static identity throughout the play to reveal to his wealthier audiences that appearance and identity are
not directly correlated. As the play begins, the audience is introduced to a poor flower girl.

Essay On Women Empowerment
JUDICIAL ACTIVISM and EMPOWERMENT OF INDIAN WOMEN TOWARDS EQUALITY
WOMEN S DEVELOPMENT HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Women s empowerment is a noted concept in social change, which is much discussed, often elusive
and sometimes abused. Yet in the context of development, women s leadership and agency in social
change have been levers for women s empowerment within communities. Women have sought to fight
entrenched interests for community benefits, and have garnered through their collective strength, a
new identity. Women s rights around the world are an important indicator to understand global well
being.
Creating the environment which imparts equal status to women in family, society and country is the

Both these movements raised the question of equal status of women. The issues which attracted the
attention of the nineteenth century social reformers were sati, ill treatment of widows, the ban on
widow remarriage, polygamy, child marriage, denial of property rights and education to women.
The Reformers thought that by giving women access to education and by enacting progressive
legislation social change could be initiated.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, M.G. Ranade, Mahatma Phule, Lokhitwadi,
Aurobindo and others from all parts of the country raised their voice against the unjust practices while
revivalists like Dayamanda saraswati, swami Vivekananda and Annie Besant Believed in receiving the
old Vedic society presumed to be ideal for women.[4] Mahatma Gandhiji too, vehemently criticized
the custom of child marriage, prohibition of widow remarriage, temple prostitution and the custom of
purdah. The nationalist movements not only draw a large number of women to political activity but
also generated strength and confidence among women which helped them to organize and fight for
their cause. The formation of the All India Women s Conference in 1927 was a crucial event in women
s march towards equality. Many laws were enacted which tried to eradicate certain social evils. These
included an Act legalizing remarriage of widows, child marriage Restraint Act

Analysis Of A Life Beyond Do What You Love
Many people place what they love doing as their top priority when considering future career options.
However, Gordon Marino, professor of philosophy at St. Olaf College and editor of The Quotable
Kierkegaard, believes that this should not be the case. He wrote on the subject in his article titled A
Life Beyond Do What You Love , which was published in The New York Times on May 17, 2014. His
purpose in writing this article is to offer a different view of a commonly held belief. Mr. Marino
argues that the statement do what you love is an elitist aspect of our culture that degrades the inherent
value of work and severs connections between work, talent, and duty. He supports his argument
through his anecdotes denoting his personal experience, continuous appeals to authority, his use of
deductive reasoning, and through procatalepsis.
Marino uses anecdotes detailing his personal experience about choosing love several times in his
article to support his argument. He opens his article with an anecdote that establishes his authority as a
person who advises students on career options and then clarifies that he is, in fact, an occupational
counselor. He recounts a humorous event in which a student was wondering what to do with his life
after graduation. The student was stuck between becoming a doctor or a philosophy professor, the
student also confessed to thinking about giving stand up comedy a try (Marino 1, para.1). This first
anecdote ensures the reader that Marino is

Comparison Of Sophocles Oedipus The King
Oedipus the King is a play that is written by Sophocles (Oedipus the King, Sophocles). There is also a
filmed adaptation it is a stage performed version known as Oedipus Rex whose director was Tyrone
Guthrie, the producer was Leonid Kipnis, and the screenwriter was William Butler Yeats. that was
filmed in 1957 (Oedipus Rex, 1957). The written play has a message that a wrong must be made right
or it will be punished:(Oedipus the King, Sophocles) and the filmed adaptation has a very similar
portrayal , and the message is the same: a wrong must be made right or it will be punished(Oedipus
Rex, 1957). The main character of these works, Oedipus, is forced to learn that he must make past
wrongs right by overcoming his pride in order to undo the tribulation in the written text(Oedipus the

The Cost Of Health Insurance
In 2012, the United States of America (USA) spent more than 2.8 trillion United States dollars (US$)
i.e. more than 17% of its gross domestic product (GDP) and more than the entire GDP of the United
Kingdom and Great Britain and Northern Ireland on its health care system (Rice et al., 2014, page #).
This outrageous number in the quote shows to what extent the United States government is really
going to in order to provide coverage for its citizens. The cost of health is rising day by day, and the
current rate of health insurance is unable to really help those in need of it, such as the poor or less

With a simple yet effective insurance plan that covers basic support for these poor families, they can
work their way up to paying off the plan in a set number of years as becoming a client of a health

out how to help everyone but not really implementing much. If affordable coverage could be provided
to all, including those with families, through a plan where citizens work and then receive insurance
based on their ethic and employment, this could possible help with not only health care problems but
unemployment as well.
Problems of Health and Cost to Cover the Problems Lots of health issues can be focused on here, but
there are some evident ones that show up in impoverished homes. These mainly include asthma,
obesity, diabetes, high/low blood pressure, an innumerable amount of cardiac conditions, and many
mental illnesses as well. The numbers of diseases are increasing day by day and now more than ever
before showing up with HIV, AIDS, and parasitic problems too. In reality, and in the eyes of the poor
their problems are denied and so is their proper care, because of the lack of money and care they are
provided. The poor must compensate by overlooking agencies because of all the restrictions that they

Plagiarism And Cheating
Students involving in Plagiarism and Cheating should be punished
Academic dishonesty in more advanced education systems is not a new occurrence. The alarming
frequency of the cases of academic dishonesty on colleges and schools requires more innovative
means of remedying the concern. Based on the author of Lang, M. James How College Classes
Encourage Cheating The Boston Globe. Academic dishonesty refers to types of plagiarism and
cheating that entails learners receiving or offering unapproved support in an academic practice or
attaining recognition or praise for a piece that is not theirs (Lang, M. James). Cheating can be defined
as deliberately applying or trying to apply unapproved information, materials, or study supports in an
academic practice. On the other hand, plagiarism refers to the intentional reproduction or adoption of
words or ideas or sentences of another individual as one s own with no attribution. Cheating conduct
in colleges and schools across the globe is not new. The behavior can be drawn back thousands of
years ago. For instance, in the Republic of China, there was a case of cheating in which the civil
service tests were conducted in single partitions to curb examinees from viewing the test papers of
their fellows (Lang). Therefore, the academic dishonesty is a serious intellectual and moral problem,
and those who involve in plagiarism and cheating should be punished.
Firstly, plagiarism is a moral problem. This dishonesty, which involves taking

In my initial post, I also discussed the economic factor for the Southern States seceding from the
Union; however, the Mississippi Declaration of Secession says two main factors for the state decision
of seceding from the Union than the economic factor. Historians do not use a small piece of evidence
to decide what happened, they gather facts to reconstruct the events that have to transpire, and the
same should be done when analyzing a primary document. On the Mississippi Declaration of
Secession also states, It has given indubitable evidence of its design to ruin our agriculture, to

Mrs Helenne Alving And Ghosts
Plenty published by David Hare in 1978 and Ghosts published by Henrik Ibsen in 1881, might have
almost a gap of hundred years in publication, but they are both plays that attest the intertemporal issue
of society s pressure on the woman. In the notes of A Doll s house, in 1878, Ibsen writes A woman
cannot be herself in contemporary society, it is an exclusively male society with laws drafted by men,
and with counsel and judges who judge feminine conduct from the male point of view. The female
protagonist in Ghosts, Mrs Helene Alving, has been influenced by the society s need of forming
women that are first, obedient daughters, then, obedient wives, dutiful mothers, but in general,
obedient individuals of that society s ideals, conventions and traditions. In Plenty, the audience gets to
examine years of Susan Traherne s life, from her World War II activity as a courier in the French
Renaissance to her emotional privation in the post Suez British plenty . Even after the war, Susan
cannot sustain a fulfilling life since the society s ideals and conventions disharmonize with her own
opinions and purpose. The common element between Mrs Alving and Susan is that as women they are
expected to fit into a certain role in the real life, directed by the society itself, a life that diminishes
their personal fulfilment.
To begin with, Ghosts is a play that does not solely examine the society s pressure on the women, but
the impact of society on every individual regardless of gender.

The Barren Woman By Sylvia Plath
Barren Woman by Sylvia Plath Poems are a structure of words with multiple layers of meanings. The
Barren Woman by Sylvia Plath describes a childless woman who sees herself as empty and bare. Plath
uses specific figurative language, such as, allusion, diction, and imagery to help explain what being
barren is like. The form, context, and figurative language of Barren Woman conveys what it is like to
be barren, emotionally and physically. Barren Woman is a relatively short poem. It is separated into
two parts. This helps distinctly structure the poem. In the first part of this poem, the woman is
comparing herself to an empty museum. Empty, I echo to the least footfall, / Museum without statues,
grand with pillars, porticoes, rotundas. / In my courtyard a fountain leaps and sinks back into itself (1
3). In the second part of this poem the narrator takes a different point of view. She abruptly changes
from describing herself as an empty museum, to expressing how she imagines her life, and the harsh
reality that it actually is: I imagine myself with a great public, / Mother of a white Nike and several
bald eyed Apollos. / Instead, the dead injure me with attentions, and nothing can happen ( Barren 5 7).
Plath constructs the separate parts as two separate stanzas; part one is the first stanza, and the second
part is the second stanza. By doing two stanzas each with five lines, it helps balance two different
points in one poem. Barren Woman is a very important

Transcendentalism
Ralph Waldo Emerson said, The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to
be. Transcendentalist believed in being independent and self reliant as well as appreciating nature.
Transcendentalism occurred in the 1800s in the United States. Transcendentalist believed that one
should not rely on others and should rely solely on themselves. They also believe that nature was
important in the world and should not be taken for granted. Artist from 2000 up to now share these
common beliefs with transcendentalist. One of these artist is Trisha Yearwood who had the song Real
Live Woman. Another artist who has a song that follows their beliefs is Lee Ann Womack. Lee Ann
Womack has the song I Hope You Dance which also follows along with the beliefs of
transcendentalist. Some of the beliefs that transcendentalist had was believing in independence and
they also believed in appreciating nature and everything in it for example Lee Ann Womack sings
about nature and what happens in it and Trisha Yearwood in one of her songs sings about the
importance of being self reliant and independent she also talks about social reforms and not doing
things that is set up by society. Nature itself is very important in the world and as for self reliance it
was seen as being something you should be. Along with social reforms being something that is going
against what society deems right. Transcendentalist believed that nature was a main aspect of life and

Example Of Masculinity In Beowulf
Beowulf is an Old English poem written somewhere between the eighth century and the tenth century;
the culture of Germanic times is depicted through varying concepts of masculinity that not only
describes their capability as a warrior, but also their aptitude as a leader. Beowulf shows of a demon
named Grendel attacking Heorot, and the king, Hrothgar, calls Beowulf, a warrior, for help with the
slaying of Grendel. Characteristics and qualities of leadership are directly linked to the masculinity of
the characters within Beowulf. The leaders in the prologue are demonstrated with the aspects of
masculinity through their strength and brutality. In Beowulf, a man demonstrates his essential worth
through evidence of masculinity as seen in Unferth s cowardice, Beowulf s heroism, and Wiglaf s
bravery. Unferth is considered less of a man because he is more intelligent than masculine. He may be
intelligent, but he is neither a strong warrior nor a brave one. Beowulf recalls that fact that Unferth has
been a warrior for Hrothgar the entire time that Grendel has been attacking, and he has done nothing
towards defeating the monster. Beowulf states, Now I cannot recall / any fight you entered, Unferth, /
that bears comparison. (lines 582 84) Unferth may have been an intelligent man, but his lack of a high
degree of masculinity causes his worth to be lower than that of Beowulf or any other brave warrior.

Multiculturalism And The American Culture
Multiculturalism promotes cultural diversity and is supported by many educators in the United States.
Educators tend to favor multiculturalism because it seeks to understand and appreciate different
cultures. Multicultural education seeks to reduce social conflict between minority groups because it
allows the majority (Americans) to have a better understanding of the nations vast amounts of diverse
cultures. In relation to the English only laws, it sees the notion of multiculturalism as undermining
American traditions and history. They tend to favor cultural literacy, in which schools teach and
empathize American values in the educational system. Multiculturalism developed as a result of the
opposition to the melting pot regarding the American identity and the increasing amounts of
immigrants that arrived to the United States. In this concept, immigrants melt into the American
culture in which they renounce their pervious cultural identity in order to become true and loyal
Americans like language and cultural practices. As generations go by, many immigrants lose their
cultural traditions and adopt the American culture. The salad bowl theory on the other hand, regards

Cause Of Ww1
The main cause of World War One was the assassination of the archduke of Austria Hungary, Franz
Ferdinand in June of 1914. Two months later, on August 4th, 1914 Great Britain declared war. Ireland,
at this time, was a part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and as a result, they had
become a part of the war as well. Before the war broke out, there were already fifty eight thousand
Irishmen enlisted in the British Army or Navy. During the duration of the war, another one hundred
thirty Irishmen were recruited as volunteers. These Irishmen joined the armed forces for several
different reasons. Some, because of political reasons, others joined to send money to loved ones back
home, and some were simply after the adventure that war brought along with it. Tom Barry, who
enlisted in the British military in June 1915, said he joined to see what war was like, to get a gun, to
see new countries and to feel like a grown man. However, during the war, the unsung heroes of the
war had been the Irish women. These women were almost as involved in the war effort as the men had

The Army has transformed several times during its history. Adapting to the operational environment is
a necessity for the force called upon to prosecute its adversaries. The Army must do what is necessary
to protect the U.S. against all enemies, and advance the national interests of the American people. To
accomplish this, anticipation of threats is crucial and victory against its adversaries is an imperative.
The nation relies on the military for strategic level deterrence and expects that it will be decisive in
combat operations. For the military to be successful, it is important that transformation adapt to meet

Likewise, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor caused the U.S. Navy to transform doctrine as well.
Not every example of transformation works in every situation. The German Blitzkrieg worked in
France, where the distance from their lines of support were short. Conversely, this speed driven
technique did not work in Russia where time and distance became an adversary for the Germans.
During the interwar years, many European countries invested much into transforming their militaries
following lessons learned from World War I. France is a prime example of a country that invested into
lessons from the previous war rather than developing a vision for potential future events by spending
billions of dollars increasing its Artillery and on building the Maginot line. As history demonstrates,
this investment would probably have worked fine during the previous war but did not stop an attack
by a German enemy that did transform for the future fight.
Why a Transformation
Though the concept of war has changed little through time, its conduct varies depending upon many
factors, which include but are not limited to demographics, political issues, and technology. To be
successful in combat, an Army must envision and adapt to these concerns. The dilemma, however, to
transformation can be the high cost of training, developing, and implementing the change. Without a
tangible reason for the change or a

The Effects of Forgiveness on Mental Health Essay
Forgiveness has been defined in many ways by psychologists and researchers with no one universal
definition. Hill (as cited in Maltby, Day and Mackaskill 2001) state that it is widely agreed that
forgiveness involves a willingness to abandon resentment, negative judgement and indifferent
behaviour towards the person who has hurt them Although research is recent, from the last 15 years, it
has helped develop our understanding of forgiveness . Research has shown that forgiveness gives
positive mental health and prevents the development of mental disorders such as anxiety, depression

empirical evidence proves support this from a series of studies which had consistent findings to

Indigenous women have not had their voices heard or their knowledge recognised (Kildea, 2006). In

Durey and Thompson (2012) explain that the act of balancing quality care and organisation efficiency
means that minimal resources are allocated to providing and improving appropriate Indigenous health
care. Unfortunately, this is a factor in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women avoiding culturally
unsafe care and aggravates the vicious cycle that leads to poor maternal and perinatal outcomes
(Kruske, Kildea Barclay, 2006). One of the recommendations made by the Close the Gap campaign
involves increasing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health care workers (Kelly et

Civil War Weaponry
Ketchum Grenades
In August of 1861, William F. Ketchum patented the Ketchum Hand Grenade. Shortly after, in the
years of 1863 and 1864, the grenade was implemented in the American Civil War.
With a lemon shaped piece of iron and a tail made of paper or cardboard, the handheld explosive
greatly resembled a dart. On the front of the grenade s body was a plunger, which held a percussion
cap filled with explosive material. When the the grenade fell onto its nose and applied pressure to the
plunger, an explosion was triggered, only to be met by more gunpowder inside. Although the resulting
explosion caused a great deal of mayhem and shrapnel, it was not very reliable because its detonation
depended on the grenade falling directly onto its nose. Because of its temperamental behavior, the
grenade got a reputation for not being very accurate.
During its use by the Union army, the weapon was still in its earliest stages. Although the Confederate
army did not adopt this specific weapon, they had similar ideas such as the Raines grenade, which was
similar in appearance, but completely inadequate for battle. Instead of cardboard fins for a stable
flight, the Raines grenade had a cloth streamer.
Ketchums were used in several important battles such as the battle of Vicksburg and the siege of
Petersburg. Union soldiers threw the grenades at the Confederate troops and stood back for the
explosion. They were faced with an unpleasant surprise when the Confederates found a way to avoid

in order to make it in the top 10. At this point in time, I was very anxious to see how strong our team
really is because I really thought we had more in us than what we put out on the mat the last match.
My record was now 4 1 which was looking very impressive. Moving into our next match I had opened
up the first match knowing it was important and I set the tone of the match I would say with a huge
win over a multiple time state champion from the Florida team. My team won that match, meaning
that we were going up against the returning champion team called Young Guns from Pennsylvania.
That match was safe to say the most adrenaline I have had in my body going at one time. The match
really came down to the final bouts of the match, making it a very grueling match to be a part of
because all that was on my mind was the fact that with a huge win here means we sealed the deal the
place top ten at the least! I and most of the team picked up very courageous wins over our opponents
bringing us to victory in the end of that match. Sleeping that night seemed impossible because there
was so much on my mind, I could not

How Slavery In Africa Changed Over Time Essay
Africa was once a thriving and wonderful continent filled with luxurious and wealthy kingdoms, but
that had all changed when a new and appalling type of slavery was introduced. Around the 18th
century, Africa became an ideal place for Europeans to trade and buy slaves from. The slave trade in
Africa seemed to be manageable and somewhat peaceful before the Europeans brought in a new type
of slavery. When the Europeans bought slaves from Africans, they kept them as slaves for life which
were very different from how long slaves were kept in Africa. Europeans kept slaves in extremely
poor conditions and treated them as if they were less than human. These actions caused a great spike
in the slave trade all over the world and many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Buckets were placed in these compartments for bathroom uses and other necessary uses (). Slaves that
were placed far from these buckets had difficulty in reaching them because of the number of other
slaves around them (Falconbridge, 1788). This situation would cause slaves to release themselves
where they were and would cause several health issues and diseases to arise (Falconbridge, 1788).
Later on in his account, Falconbridge describes the upkeep of the slaves on the voyages. The slaves
were usually fed twice a day, but on most other ships they were only fed once (Falconbridge, 1788).
Their food would be severed in small buckets and slaves would be placed in groups of ten for each
bucket (Falconbridge, 1788). Upon the Negroes refusing to take sustenance, I have seen coals of fire,
glowing hot, put on a shovel and placed so near their lips as to scorch and burn them. And this has
been accompanied with threats of forcing them to swallow the coals if they any longer persisted in
refusing to eat. (Falconbridge, 1788). Upon the resistance of the obligations of eating, slaves were
extremely punished for disobeying and these punishments were severely cruel and inhumane. Slaves
were forced to obey the slave owners no matter what the situation was. Slaves were even forced to
exercise which would aid in the upkeep of their health (Falconbridge,

Essay on The Core Tenets of Islam
The Core Tenets of Islam The religion of Islam dates back to the 7th century CE and the life of its
founder, Muhammad of Mecca, in Saudi Arabia. Islam is an Arabic word meaning: making something
safe and secure, making something sound and whole, entering into peace and tranquility, and
surrendering to something other than oneself. A follower of Islam is called a Muslim. In the religion of
Islam, it requires the belief in certain core tenets, which include the articles of faith and the five pillars
of worship. These two combined, form the Islamic creed.
I The Articles of Faith The term monotheism is significant to Islam, meaning that a belief in only one
God. The first article of faith in Islam is the belief that there is no deity but ... Show more content on

The third article of faith in Islam, is the belief in all the prophets and messengers sent by God, ending
with Muhammad. All messengers were chosen by God to teach mankind. They were all human, and
have no share in divinity, but they are the perfect paradigms for humanity. The messages were all the
same, as it came from one God. Their fundamental message was identical, reminding mankind of
Allah s oneness, the reward of a good life, and the Day of Judgment and the terrible punishment for
disbelievers ( Islamic Path ). In the Quran, the holy book of Islam, it states the names of the twenty
five prophets, and every Muslim accepts them all. Except for Muhammad, all prophets are considered
to be national or local messengers. Muhammad, on the other hand, is considered a prophet for all the
nations. He is also described as the Seal of all Prophets, as stated in the Quran. He stands as the last
messenger. In the Quran, the phenomena of earlier prophets are recognized. Those prophets included,
Abraham, Noah, Jesus, Moses, and many others. The belief in all scriptures and revelations of God is
the fourth article of faith. The revelations were given to guide the people to the true path of God. In
the Quran, it refers to the books that were revealed to Abraham, David, Moses, Jesus, and
Muhammad. Allah sent messages to humanity through his prophets ( Islamic

Athletic Performance
What Can Be Done to Improve the Child s Athletic Performance?
For the athlete to continue achieving high performance in spite of a toxic relationship, toxic stress
should be isolated as much as possible. The most direct (yet most difficult) way to achieve this is to
heal the toxicity in the parent/child relationship. One must break the cycle of inflictions exhibited in
these relationships; while many toxic parents unknowingly latch onto or inhumanely punish their
children, their children, seeking self confidence from their microsystem, create circumstances to pull
themselves closer to their parents, creating familial turmoil and testing their parents aptitude to save
them (in which they will continue to be disappointed) (Dunham, ... Show more content on

Still, not every team has the capability or intent of providing these types of relationships for athletes in
toxic parent/child relationships, and the motivation to succeed must come from within the athlete.
When the external relationships offer no solutions to the toxic parenting problem, one must look
inside to negate the pressures affecting athletic performance. Many turn to yoga, meditation,
visualizations, inner evaluation, and various other routines to isolate themselves from the pressures in
their microsystems (Bradshaw, 1988). If the athlete can address and self resolve the internal emotions
spurring from the toxic relationship, the athlete separates the need to be fulfilled by his/her toxic
parent and thus builds internal self confidence, not confidence hinging on the usually negative parental
perceptions.
With these resolutions in mind, there is still no guarantee that athletes living with a toxic parent will
ever reach their highest potential. Sometimes, the effects of toxic parenting are insurmountable, or
there are compounding circumstances that cause pressure to outweigh athletic motivation. However, if
an athlete can identify their parent as a toxic parent, realize how the relationship may be influencing
their athletic career, and work to

The National Defense Education Act
In America, the state of education has always been a pressing concern, perhaps now more than ever.
Improving education has been proven to strengthen the nation time and time again, specifically with
regard to science, mathematics and technology. Ten years after the start of the Cold War on October 4,
1957, the Soviet Union launched the first ever man made satellite, Sputnik 1. This action by the
Soviets caused immediate concern for the educational system in the United States because this launch
proved that the Soviet Union had superior technological capabilities (SOURCE 1). America s first
action was to improve education, and this was done through the National Defense Education Act,
which provided large amounts of funding to American schools, and supported American students who
showed particular skill in math, sciences or foreign languages (SOURCE 2). During the Cold War,
supporting education was used to support the nation as a whole. Today the United States faces a
similar problem, mainly due to the declining focus on science and math in schools. Students have been
losing interest in these subjects, and as a result, America has been falling behind in the global
education ranks. This decline has been hurting America s ability to continue to be a successful global
competitor. Now the government is working to reverse this trend by supporting STEM programs.
STEM is an acronym for the academics concentrations of Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics. The purpose of

  • 3. The Opinion Of Henry Jenkins Essay In the opinion of Henry Jenkins Participatory culture shifts the focus of literacy from individual expression to community involvement Jenkins et al (2009, pg6). Using this explanation, this essay underlines the matters of how the entertainment industries has taken full control through social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. Furthermore, it also typifies how such industries emphasis significantly into its logics and practices through its audience and fan participation. Supported Research is justified by various theorists/examples. This includes Prensky, Katz and Blumler, Dan Gilmore, David Gauntlet, Charles Leadbeater and Jenkins himself. According to Jenkins Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide , It spectacles that the entertainment industry has taken the advantage of harnessing New Media on traditional formats by focussing on the logistics and practices. This evidently helps to increase the popularity and the availability of audience participation through the use of updated technology. This is denoted through old technological formats via applying new interactive media to heighten the participation for numerous audiences. For instance, back in the day many industries i.e. entertainment had to depend on broadcasting and radio for the viewers to receive their audio or visual content. To do these industries had to send out signals globally through a large transmitter so that people can receive their content. Transmitting these signals ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Traditional American Family Essay When the idea of a family life first began, the man was supposed to be the sole breadwinner while the wife stayed home to cook or clean or take care of the children. A traditional American family used to be a mom and a dad, with a few kids. However, that white picket fence lifestyle has become almost abnormal now. Ever since the choices of divorce, homosexuality, even role reversal have been offered to families things have never been quite the same. In the early days, divorce was an extremely shameful thing. The concept of for better or worse truly held it s meaning. A man and a woman would almost never split up, no matter how bad things got. Today, divorce papers can be mailed and signed with virtually no hassle, making the ending of a marriage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A century ago, the man of the household was the one that brought home the bacon. His wife would be waiting for him at home with a cold beer or other beverage and have his favorite show on if a radio or TV was available. Fast forward a century and stay at home dads are becoming more common. Single parents are almost normal to see, and the woman of the house is now allowed to earn a paycheck. By giving families a choice in how they want to go about daily life has greatly changed how families work now. Aldahmashi University of Pittsburgh Motor Learning and Control of Movement Dr. Susan Whitney November 2, 2014 Introduction Falling is described as resting on the ground or the floor accidently without being caused by intrinsic incident or tremendous hazard (Ayoubi Launay, 2014; Tuunainen, Rasku, Jäntti, Pyykkö, 2014). It is also defined as unexpected, unintended, unprovoked alteration in body position causing an individual to be in an inferior level and not resulted from internal disturbance (Menant, Schoene, Sarofim, Lord, 2014). Background Information Fall is the major cause of injury in the elderly, which places more load on the health care system (Krasovsky, Lamontagne, Feldman, Levin, 2014). Samuel D. Towne Jr. and his colleagues conducted a study to calculate the cost of hospitalizing older people as a result of falling in Texas Hospital. 77,086 fallers were hospitalized, costing around 3.1 billion dollars in 2011, which is an increase of around 2 billion dollars since 2007 (Towne, Ory, Smith, 2014). Moreover, fall directly causes 21,649 deaths and indirectly causes 5,402 deaths in the United States in 2010 (Stevens Rudd, 2014). Also, 420,000 individuals around the world die yearly because of falling (Mignardot et al., 2014). At the conclusion of the coffee date, the woman offers to give them a ride home in her Ford Mustang. Initially during the drive home the woman pretends she is not familiar with driving the car, most of the men offer her instructions and one suggests that she let him drive to show her what the car can really do. Shortly into the drive home, she pulls into an empty parking lot and really pushes the car to the limits. She performs a multitude of highly skilled maneuvers, burnouts, high speed stopping, drifting, etc. What all of these men did not know is this woman is actually a professional stunt driver and is more than capable of driving this powerful vehicle. • 13. Analysis Of The Log From The Sea Of Cortez Enduring Perspectives By studying the history of Native Americans, we can understand some of their characteristics, qualities, and perspectives regarding America s landscape. Many of these still persist today in either the original or a mutated form. The Native American quality of living unsustainably persists today in various forms because it is difficult to notice an unsustainable lifestyle. John Steinbeck, Barry Lopez, and Scott Momaday in The Log From the Sea of Cortez, The American Geographies, and The Way to Rainy Mountain describe this effect. Today, it is easy to look back and see that Native Americans, including the Micmac, lived unsustainable lifestyles. The Micmac s economy revolved around trading small animals (e.g. beavers). Their desire for European goods provided an incentive to deplete the animal population (Merchant 13). A problem with this lifestyle is that it is difficult to know that the animal s population is being depleted until it is too late. The Native Americans of the Great Plains centered their economy on the buffalo. The Native Americans used difficult techniques (e.g. tricking them to fall off cliffs) to catch the buffalo, which was unsustainable considering how important the Buffalos were for them (Merchant 16). When the horse arrived the Native Americans became more efficient hunters. However, their lives became less sustainable because they became dependent on the horse and buffalo population. The essential motivation originated from the Brundtland Report of 1987 (1). From that point forward the idea has moved in importance. This paper contends that the movement is terrible in that it darkens the genuine inconsistency which exists between long term maintainability and transient welfare. Also, the refinement between three pillars of sustainability is reasonably fluffy. We propose a definition that returns to the first sense in which the idea was expected. This statement is one of the most significant to understand the postcolonial view of the novel, by referencing its title with the imagery of a knife breaking things apart expresses not only the cruel overpowering intentions of the colonialists but also the vulnerability of the Igbo culture. And lastly, as the book ends with Okonkwo s suicidal tragic death it represents the futility and inefficiency in over fighting colonizing forces and the downfall of the protagonist is the final indication of the Igbo culture falling apart. Similarly, in Persepolis the protagonist Marji, also experiences the frustration of western overpowering influence on her culture. There are innumerous moments in Marjane s childhood in which she suffers from prejudgments due to the Iranian stereotypes. For example, when she is travelling outside the country for the first time she realizes that as soon as they learn our nationality, they go through everything, as though we were all terrorists. They treat us as though we have the plague. This simile comparing being Iranian with having a disease victimizes the Iranian people, as it equates racism to an irrational and condemning repugnance. • 23. George Bernard Shaw s Pygmalion George Bernard Shaw lived in a time where there was a great divide between the upper and lower classes of England. The rich were becoming increasingly wealthier, while the poor dug deeper and deeper into debt. Similar to American society today, the upper class looked down upon the lower class for their outward appearance (the way in which they spoke and dressed). People such as antagonist Henry Higgins of Pygmalion, in fact, only focused on a person s facade; they were completely ignorant to people s true identities. As a social activist during the early 1900s, Shaw chose to introduce the incorrect judgment placed upon working class citizens to his wealthier audiences within his play Pygmalion. Henry Higgins finds poor flower girl Eliza and determines her a lost soul, deciding immediately he could better her as a person through phonetics and etiquette classes. What is unclear to Higgins, however, is that Eliza s character is already built. In Higgins opinion, her accent and outfit of choice are undeniably inadequate. What he fails to recognize, though, is Eliza s heart and intelligence her true identity. He makes it his duty to play God, transforming Eliza into what he deems a respectable lady, but pays no mind to her inner self. Shaw uses Eliza s outer transformation and her static identity throughout the play to reveal to his wealthier audiences that appearance and identity are not directly correlated. As the play begins, the audience is introduced to a poor flower girl. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, Gordon Marino, professor of philosophy at St. Olaf College and editor of The Quotable Kierkegaard, believes that this should not be the case. He wrote on the subject in his article titled A Life Beyond Do What You Love , which was published in The New York Times on May 17, 2014. His purpose in writing this article is to offer a different view of a commonly held belief. Mr. Marino argues that the statement do what you love is an elitist aspect of our culture that degrades the inherent value of work and severs connections between work, talent, and duty. He supports his argument through his anecdotes denoting his personal experience, continuous appeals to authority, his use of deductive reasoning, and through procatalepsis. Marino uses anecdotes detailing his personal experience about choosing love several times in his article to support his argument. He opens his article with an anecdote that establishes his authority as a person who advises students on career options and then clarifies that he is, in fact, an occupational counselor. He recounts a humorous event in which a student was wondering what to do with his life after graduation. The student was stuck between becoming a doctor or a philosophy professor, the student also confessed to thinking about giving stand up comedy a try (Marino 1, para.1). • 28. Plagiarism And Cheating Students involving in Plagiarism and Cheating should be punished Academic dishonesty in more advanced education systems is not a new occurrence. The alarming frequency of the cases of academic dishonesty on colleges and schools requires more innovative means of remedying the concern. Based on the author of Lang, M. James How College Classes Encourage Cheating The Boston Globe. Academic dishonesty refers to types of plagiarism and cheating that entails learners receiving or offering unapproved support in an academic practice or attaining recognition or praise for a piece that is not theirs (Lang, M. James). Cheating can be defined as deliberately applying or trying to apply unapproved information, materials, or study supports in an academic practice. On the other hand, plagiarism refers to the intentional reproduction or adoption of words or ideas or sentences of another individual as one s own with no attribution. Cheating conduct in colleges and schools across the globe is not new. The behavior can be drawn back thousands of years ago. For instance, in the Republic of China, there was a case of cheating in which the civil service tests were conducted in single partitions to curb examinees from viewing the test papers of their fellows (Lang). Therefore, the academic dishonesty is a serious intellectual and moral problem, and those who involve in plagiarism and cheating should be punished. Firstly, plagiarism is a moral problem. Mrs Helenne Alving And Ghosts Plenty published by David Hare in 1978 and Ghosts published by Henrik Ibsen in 1881, might have almost a gap of hundred years in publication, but they are both plays that attest the intertemporal issue of society s pressure on the woman. In the notes of A Doll s house, in 1878, Ibsen writes A woman cannot be herself in contemporary society, it is an exclusively male society with laws drafted by men, and with counsel and judges who judge feminine conduct from the male point of view. The female protagonist in Ghosts, Mrs Helene Alving, has been influenced by the society s need of forming women that are first, obedient daughters, then, obedient wives, dutiful mothers, but in general, obedient individuals of that society s ideals, conventions and traditions. In Plenty, the audience gets to examine years of Susan Traherne s life, from her World War II activity as a courier in the French Renaissance to her emotional privation in the post Suez British plenty . Even after the war, Susan cannot sustain a fulfilling life since the society s ideals and conventions disharmonize with her own opinions and purpose. The common element between Mrs Alving and Susan is that as women they are expected to fit into a certain role in the real life, directed by the society itself, a life that diminishes their personal fulfilment. To begin with, Ghosts is a play that does not solely examine the society s pressure on the women, but the impact of society on every individual regardless of gender. ... • 31. The Barren Woman By Sylvia Plath Barren Woman by Sylvia Plath Poems are a structure of words with multiple layers of meanings. The Barren Woman by Sylvia Plath describes a childless woman who sees herself as empty and bare. Plath uses specific figurative language, such as, allusion, diction, and imagery to help explain what being barren is like. The form, context, and figurative language of Barren Woman conveys what it is like to be barren, emotionally and physically. Barren Woman is a relatively short poem. It is separated into two parts. This helps distinctly structure the poem. In the first part of this poem, the woman is comparing herself to an empty museum. Empty, I echo to the least footfall, / Museum without statues, grand with pillars, porticoes, rotundas. / In my courtyard a fountain leaps and sinks back into itself (1 3). In the second part of this poem the narrator takes a different point of view. She abruptly changes from describing herself as an empty museum, to expressing how she imagines her life, and the harsh reality that it actually is: I imagine myself with a great public, / Mother of a white Nike and several bald eyed Apollos. / Instead, the dead injure me with attentions, and nothing can happen ( Barren 5 7). Plath constructs the separate parts as two separate stanzas; part one is the first stanza, and the second part is the second stanza. By doing two stanzas each with five lines, it helps balance two different points in one poem. Barren Woman is a very important ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. Example Of Masculinity In Beowulf Beowulf is an Old English poem written somewhere between the eighth century and the tenth century; the culture of Germanic times is depicted through varying concepts of masculinity that not only describes their capability as a warrior, but also their aptitude as a leader. Beowulf shows of a demon named Grendel attacking Heorot, and the king, Hrothgar, calls Beowulf, a warrior, for help with the slaying of Grendel. Characteristics and qualities of leadership are directly linked to the masculinity of the characters within Beowulf. The leaders in the prologue are demonstrated with the aspects of masculinity through their strength and brutality. In Beowulf, a man demonstrates his essential worth through evidence of masculinity as seen in Unferth s cowardice, Beowulf s heroism, and Wiglaf s bravery. Unferth is considered less of a man because he is more intelligent than masculine. He may be intelligent, but he is neither a strong warrior nor a brave one. Beowulf recalls that fact that Unferth has been a warrior for Hrothgar the entire time that Grendel has been attacking, and he has done nothing towards defeating the monster. Beowulf states, Now I cannot recall / any fight you entered, Unferth, / that bears comparison. (lines 582 84) Unferth may have been an intelligent man, but his lack of a high degree of masculinity causes his worth to be lower than that of Beowulf or any other brave warrior. During the interwar years, many European countries invested much into transforming their militaries following lessons learned from World War I. France is a prime example of a country that invested into lessons from the previous war rather than developing a vision for potential future events by spending billions of dollars increasing its Artillery and on building the Maginot line. Shortly after, in the years of 1863 and 1864, the grenade was implemented in the American Civil War. With a lemon shaped piece of iron and a tail made of paper or cardboard, the handheld explosive greatly resembled a dart. On the front of the grenade s body was a plunger, which held a percussion cap filled with explosive material. When the the grenade fell onto its nose and applied pressure to the plunger, an explosion was triggered, only to be met by more gunpowder inside. Although the resulting explosion caused a great deal of mayhem and shrapnel, it was not very reliable because its detonation depended on the grenade falling directly onto its nose. Because of its temperamental behavior, the grenade got a reputation for not being very accurate. During its use by the Union army, the weapon was still in its earliest stages. Although the Confederate army did not adopt this specific weapon, they had similar ideas such as the Raines grenade, which was similar in appearance, but completely inadequate for battle. Instead of cardboard fins for a stable flight, the Raines grenade had a cloth streamer. Ketchums were used in several important battles such as the battle of Vicksburg and the siege of Petersburg. My record was now 4 1 which was looking very impressive. Moving into our next match I had opened up the first match knowing it was important and I set the tone of the match I would say with a huge win over a multiple time state champion from the Florida team. My team won that match, meaning that we were going up against the returning champion team called Young Guns from Pennsylvania. That match was safe to say the most adrenaline I have had in my body going at one time. The match really came down to the final bouts of the match, making it a very grueling match to be a part of because all that was on my mind was the fact that with a huge win here means we sealed the deal the place top ten at the least! I and most of the team picked up very courageous wins over our opponents bringing us to victory in the end of that match. Sleeping that night seemed impossible because there was so much on my mind, I could not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. How Slavery In Africa Changed Over Time Essay Africa was once a thriving and wonderful continent filled with luxurious and wealthy kingdoms, but that had all changed when a new and appalling type of slavery was introduced. Around the 18th century, Africa became an ideal place for Europeans to trade and buy slaves from. The slave trade in Africa seemed to be manageable and somewhat peaceful before the Europeans brought in a new type of slavery. When the Europeans bought slaves from Africans, they kept them as slaves for life which were very different from how long slaves were kept in Africa. Europeans kept slaves in extremely poor conditions and treated them as if they were less than human. These actions caused a great spike in the slave trade all over the world and many ... Slaves that were placed far from these buckets had difficulty in reaching them because of the number of other slaves around them (Falconbridge, 1788). This situation would cause slaves to release themselves where they were and would cause several health issues and diseases to arise (Falconbridge, 1788). Later on in his account, Falconbridge describes the upkeep of the slaves on the voyages. The slaves were usually fed twice a day, but on most other ships they were only fed once (Falconbridge, 1788). Their food would be severed in small buckets and slaves would be placed in groups of ten for each bucket (Falconbridge, 1788). Upon the Negroes refusing to take sustenance, I have seen coals of fire, glowing hot, put on a shovel and placed so near their lips as to scorch and burn them. And this has been accompanied with threats of forcing them to swallow the coals if they any longer persisted in refusing to eat. (Falconbridge, 1788). Upon the resistance of the obligations of eating, slaves were extremely punished for disobeying and these punishments were severely cruel and inhumane. Slaves were forced to obey the slave owners no matter what the situation was. Slaves were even forced to exercise which would aid in the upkeep of their health (Falconbridge, ... The third article of faith in Islam, is the belief in all the prophets and messengers sent by God, ending with Muhammad. All messengers were chosen by God to teach mankind. They were all human, and have no share in divinity, but they are the perfect paradigms for humanity. The messages were all the same, as it came from one God. Their fundamental message was identical, reminding mankind of Allah s oneness, the reward of a good life, and the Day of Judgment and the terrible punishment for disbelievers ( Islamic Path ). In the Quran, the holy book of Islam, it states the names of the twenty five prophets, and every Muslim accepts them all. Except for Muhammad, all prophets are considered to be national or local messengers. Muhammad, on the other hand, is considered a prophet for all the nations. He is also described as the Seal of all Prophets, as stated in the Quran. He stands as the last messenger. In the Quran, the phenomena of earlier prophets are recognized. Those prophets included, Abraham, Noah, Jesus, Moses, and many others. The belief in all scriptures and revelations of God is the fourth article of faith. • 46. Athletic Performance What Can Be Done to Improve the Child s Athletic Performance? For the athlete to continue achieving high performance in spite of a toxic relationship, toxic stress should be isolated as much as possible. The most direct (yet most difficult) way to achieve this is to heal the toxicity in the parent/child relationship. One must break the cycle of inflictions exhibited in these relationships; while many toxic parents unknowingly latch onto or inhumanely punish their children, their children, seeking self confidence from their microsystem, create circumstances to pull themselves closer to their parents, creating familial turmoil and testing their parents aptitude to save them (in which they will continue to be disappointed) (Dunham, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Still, not every team has the capability or intent of providing these types of relationships for athletes in toxic parent/child relationships, and the motivation to succeed must come from within the athlete. When the external relationships offer no solutions to the toxic parenting problem, one must look inside to negate the pressures affecting athletic performance. Many turn to yoga, meditation, visualizations, inner evaluation, and various other routines to isolate themselves from the pressures in their microsystems (Bradshaw, 1988). If the athlete can address and self resolve the internal emotions spurring from the toxic relationship, the athlete separates the need to be fulfilled by his/her toxic parent and thus builds internal self confidence, not confidence hinging on the usually negative parental perceptions. With these resolutions in mind, there is still no guarantee that athletes living with a toxic parent will ever reach their highest potential. Sometimes, the effects of toxic parenting are insurmountable, or there are compounding circumstances that cause pressure to outweigh athletic motivation. However, if an athlete can identify their parent as a toxic parent, realize how the relationship may be influencing their athletic career, and work to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. The National Defense Education Act In America, the state of education has always been a pressing concern, perhaps now more than ever. Improving education has been proven to strengthen the nation time and time again, specifically with regard to science, mathematics and technology. Ten years after the start of the Cold War on October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first ever man made satellite, Sputnik 1. This action by the Soviets caused immediate concern for the educational system in the United States because this launch proved that the Soviet Union had superior technological capabilities (SOURCE 1). America s first action was to improve education, and this was done through the National Defense Education Act, which provided large amounts of funding to American schools, and supported American students who showed particular skill in math, sciences or foreign languages (SOURCE 2). During the Cold War, supporting education was used to support the nation as a whole. Today the United States faces a similar problem, mainly due to the declining focus on science and math in schools. Students have been losing interest in these subjects, and as a result, America has been falling behind in the global education ranks. This decline has been hurting America s ability to continue to be a successful global competitor. Now the government is working to reverse this trend by supporting STEM programs. STEM is an acronym for the academics concentrations of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The purpose of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
