The Intake Of Food And Fluid During Labour
The intake of food and fluid during labour:
One of the most challenging stages of pregnancy can be the intrapartum period. This is the period
were a women is birthing her child, although it may be really challenging it is also the most
exciting part of pregnancy for most couples. Bridget is a twenty eight year old multiparous women
who is thirty nine weeks and five days pregnant. Bridget has been admitted into the labour ward
with antenatal history showing a normal physiological pregnancy and she has entered a
spontaneous labour that is progressing well and all her maternal observations and fetal observations
are within the normal range suggesting that she is unlikely to require any interventions during

Lastly, a discussion about ketosis the presence of ketones in urine, which indicates the body, is
breaking down lipids as an energy source (Coad, Friedman, Geoffrin, 2012).
Early in the 1900s, women were encouraged to consume liquids for energy throughout their labour
by Dr DeLee, an American (Singata, Tranmer, Gyte, 2013). Since then the common practice
became to reduce women s intake of food and fluid during labour as a result of a study conducted
by Mendelson in the 1940 s. Mendelson found that during a caesarean section with general
anaesthetics women who had a full stomach were at a great risk of having their stomach contents
entering the lungs during their caesarean section, a condition known as aspiration, which led to
serious complications that were fatal (Singata, Tranmer, Gyte, 2013). As this was contributing to
a high number of maternal mortality and morbidity the findings of Mendelson was a turning
point for the care provided to women in labour. It led to all women labouring, regardless of their
risk status of having a caesarean section being advised to restrict their intake of foods and fluids
during labour by health care professionals (Singata, Tranmer, Gyte, 2013). However, since the 1940

The Help, By Kathryn Stockett
Originally a book written by Kathryn Stockett, The Help, was transformed into a film in 2011,
directed by Tate Taylor. Taking place in the early 1960s in Jackson, Mississippi, the perspective
of (mainly) two middle aged negro maids (Aibileen Clark and Minny Jackson) were recorded in
hopes of setting truth free. Miss Eugenia ( Skeeter ) Phelan, hopeful to be a journalist, claimed
that black lives were not as pleasant as portrayed, therefore she desired to reveal the truth behind
their lives through a book of interviews. The film, The Help, while not going in depth is quite
historically accurate through the depiction of social classes, racial segregation, the Jim Crow laws,
and the Civil Rights Movement (dealing with racism, violence, and homicide).... Show more content

However when writing her novel, Ms. Phelan s superior communicates to her that she has three
weeks to complete it in hopes before the movement is terminated. While many would say that
the Civil Rights Movement was barely covered in the film, this section alone utters a thousand
words. When Eugenia Phelan s supervisor, Elaine Stein, conveys to Phelan to speed her novel
up, then she is implying that the movement could pass at any moment. Implying that rather
instead of a movement, it was just a temporary period of uprisings. While Elaine Stein had all the
best intentions in assisting the blacks by publishing the book, what she said can be implied as
what numerous whites were thinking. With the Civil Rights Movement came a lot of violence
and murder. Medgar Evers was a prominent leader within the movement until Byron Beckwith
assassinated him in 1963 (A Critical Review of the novel The Help). In the film when Evers dies,
the bus let all blacks off, and then takes the rest of the whites home. Aibileen Clark scurries home
frightened for her life, so much so that she slips and injures her knee. This goes to not only
demonstrate the historical accuracy of the Civil Rights Movement and the death of a very hopeful
leader, but it also portrays the inequality that blacks were

Sociology Arranged Marriage
Is there real love existing in an arranged marriage? Are arranged marriages successful in the long
term? These are some questions that many people think about before entering one. But, what
exactly is an arranged marriage? According to New World Encyclopedia, an arranged marriage is,
a marriage which involves the parents in a process of selecting marriagepartners for their children,
with or without the help of a matchmaker. (New World Encyclopedia) (show visual). You don t hear
the term arranged marriagequite often here in North America. Why? Well, mainly because it s rare
in this part of the world. Where it is common though is in the Middle East. They have strong

One of my sources titled, Confluence of Influence: Indian American Youths Perception,
Negotiation, and Transformation of Arranged Marriage Traditions in Modern American Society,
written by Dianne Laura Fabii, talked about the opinions of second generation Indian American
youth on arranged marriages (show visual). Their parents, grandparents, and past generations all
had one, but since they are growing up in the United States, a western country where
individualism and freedom are highly valued, they decided that the tradition will not apply to
their futures (Fabii, 2017). In addition, I came upon an article which was a real life story rather
than a collection of data. It was from National Public Radio written by Jamie Tarabay, titled,
Arranged Marriage: Trapped Between Two Cultures. It focused on a 25 year old female named
Mediha Sandhu (show visual) who is dealing with her parents wanting her to move to Pakistan
to have an arranged marriage, as opposed to her wanting to stay in New Jersey. The article dives
deep into her story and explains her feeling trapped between two completely different cultures.
Sandhu is afraid of losing her freedom and identity, and how she won t be able to express herself
the way she is doing currently, because she is being forced to move back to a country where
women are seen as unimportant and simply useful for being a housewife (Tarabay,

Infant Toddler Care Mission Statement Analysis
The website of Glendale Community College Children s Center reflects it below stated mission
statement.
Mission Statement:
The Program for Infant/Toddler Care seeks to ensure that America s infants get a safe, healthy,
emotionally secure and intellectually rich start in life. Its three pronged mission is to
1) increase the availability and quality of child care for all children under age three;
2) disseminate information that increases the practice of responsive, respectful and relationship
based infant toddler care; and
3) influence national, regional and local policies and practices so that the needs and interests of
individual infants, toddlers, and their families are the foundation for all curriculum development
and program activity.
Why
A mission statement is a statement of purpose, describing who the company is and what it does.

This is supported by their policy stating:
In a primary care system, each child is assigned to one special infant/toddler care teacher who is
principally responsible for that child s care. When children spend a longer day in care than their
primary infant/toddler care teacher, a second infant/toddler care teacher is assigned to be the
primary relationship. Each child should have a special infant/toddler care teacher assigned to him
or her at all times during the child care day.
PITC recommends primary care ratios of 1:3 or 1:4, in groups of 6 12 children, depending on the
age. The guiding principle is this: the younger the child, the smaller the group. Small groups
facilitate the provision of personalized care that infants and toddlers need, supporting peaceful
exchanges, freedom and safety to move and explore, and the development of intimate relationships.
2) Disseminate information that increases the practice of responsive, respectful and relationship
based infant toddler

Pop Art And The Art
Throughout the vast history of art, there have been many art movements that stand out and
revolutionize the art world. However, one movement stands out in particular and it is known as
Pop Art. Pop Art was invented by a few younger artists by the name of Andy Warhol, Claes
Oldenburg, and Roy Lichtenstein. It was brought about in the 1960s and it helped define a new
form of American Realism. Its origin was sort of a lash out against Abstract Expressionism, which
was a style of painting. The point of pop artwas to represent life as most Americans lived it. It
pointed out the simple things that Americans find themselves caught up in in everyday life. Pop
Art represented a world focused around popular culture, which is basically what is hot in America
at the time. Pop Art brought about the reality that America revolved around the culture of things
like Wall Street Finance and Madison Avenue Advertising. It sort of presented the thought that
maybe Americans weren t so hard to get through to or to understand. Pop Art revealed the pop
culture in America and made beautiful art in return. It helped turn the page in the art world that was
leaving traditional media, like painting, in the wind.
Although there were many great artists to work with Pop Art like Claes Oldenburg and Roy
Lichtenstein, one that particularly stands out is Andy Warhol. Born in August of 1928 in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, Warhol was not among the most fortunate. Throughout his young life, Andy Warhol

Benefits Of Fibromyalgia
Is Juicing Helpful for Fibromyalgia Symptoms?
From fad to fabulous, juicing has run the gamut. The health nuts of the 1970s touted juice
cleanses for detoxing the body. Like snake oil in past eras, juicing was claimed to cure everything
from psoriasis and cancer to old age, with weight loss thrown in as a side effect.
Yet, hippie types aren t responsible for the one size fits all diet vogue. Ayurvedic practitioners have
incorporated juice therapy in their practice for 5000 years. Also, the Master Cleanse juicing fast,
developed in the 1940s by Stanley Burroughs, naturopath is still in use today.

Cherries contain natural melatonin, which promotes quality sleep. They are power packed with
pain relievers called anthocyanins aka nature s anti inflammatories.
Pineapple contains bromelain, which is a digestive enzyme that decreases pain and swelling of

Essay On Starvation Based Modulation
Since we have established the working model for starvation based modulation we wanted to
confirm it using molecular techniques. Firstly, we wanted to check the levels of relative gene
expression of a few important genes between starved and non starved larvae. We performed qRT
PCR analysis with larval whole heads. We looked at relative expression levels of these genes: Orco,
GAD1, GABA (A) receptor, GABA (B) receptor R1, GABA (B) receptor R2 and GABA (B)
receptor R3. We haven t found any significant difference between starved and non starved larvae
for all the genes above except Orco. The relative geneexpression of Orco was significantly much
higher in the case of non starved condition. Since qRT PCR analysis was done for... Show more

We used Orco Gal4 and 10x; UAS CD8; GFP to drive GFP into the ORNs. We used primary
antibody that was a chicken anti GFP (1:150, Invitrogen) and rabbit anti GABA (B) R1
(sequence mentioned above) in 0.2%PPST+5% normal goat serum (Triton X 100). Samples
were incubated overnight at 4 degrees C. Secondary antibodies were a goat anti chicken Alexa
488 (1:150, Invitrogen) and a goat anti rabbit Alexa 647 (1:75, Invitrogen) in 0.2% PBST+5%
normal goat serum. GFP staining was clearly observed in ORN s which is represented in Figure
10. This result suggests that ORN s project much deeper into the brain than thought previously.
Next, we looked for the presence of GABA (B) receptors in the larval antennal lobe.
Immunohistochemistry analysis were performed in animals expressing GFP in all 21 ORNs.
We found that GABA (B) receptor R1 localized to the ORN synaptic terminals. We conclude that
the GABA (B) R1 is localized at the ORN synapses. Root et al., 2008 observed GABA (B) receptors
on ORNs in adult flies. Here with our results, consistent with Root et al, we are seeing GABA (B)
receptors staining in larval stage too. Staining image is represented in Figure 11.
GABA (B) receptor is not found in the uniglomerular PN s Next, we looked at the uniglomerular
projection neurons for the presence of GABA (B) receptor R1. We don t know if uniglomerular
PNs have receptors for GABA (B) in the larval stage. To address this question, we used GH 146

The Constraints Of Language Help Define Our Notion Of Romance
The constraints of language help define our notion of romance, writes Mark Steyn, and in
English we re more constrained than most. There are just four and a half rhymes for love,
approximately three quarters of which offer very meagre possibilities. What is remarkable, in a
way, is that there should be any rhymes at all. If language is differential at its base, if differences
of sound and sense are the only markers of meaning (Norris 24 5), then similarity the relative lack
of difference should, if anything, tend toward meaninglessness. In practice this is not so. [T]hese
chance resemblances of sound and spelling are as ingrained in language as the chance
dissemblances they interact with, and they are easily exploited (or easily tempt those who would
exploit them) to suggest a natural affinity between objects or concepts which logically [possess]
none (Lanham 179). That s why the rhymes with loveproblem is a problem: English has difficulty
talking about love, not because love is not adequately distinguished from other words, but because it
is not adequately associated with them. Stanley Styne s lyric to the song There s No Such Thing
illustrates the peculiar situation of Anglophone love. It contains three of Steyn s four and a half
rhymes,1 and the manner in which it uses them in a way, the fact that it uses them inevitably
undercuts the frank meaning of the song.
The song begins with the assertion that There s no such thing as the next best

Biotechnology Affected The Making Of Beer
The term biotechnology defines itself. Bio means life and technology refers to the application of
scientific knowledge for practical purposes. Therefor, biotechnology is the manipulation of
organisms primarily in the fields of agriculture, food science, and medicine to modify and enhance
products, plants, and animals as well as develop other microorganisms to invent useful things or
solve problems.
Beer is one of the oldest beverages humans have produced, likely dating back to the dawn of
cereal agriculture around 10,000 B.C.E. in ancient Mesopotamia, the region of southwest Asia
currently occupied by Iraq. No one is completely sure how the process of beer making was
discovered, or who first discovered it, but the alcoholic commencement is considered to have
transpired when an early Sumerian farmer stumbled upon some starchy or sugary material like
fruit juice or bread that got wet and began to ferment within a few days resulting in an
inebriating brew. The reason someone would have thought to taste food that had been
decomposing for days was most likely because during that time period, no one would have dreamed
of wasting any food, even if it smelled a bit funny. If there was a way to make it edible and it didn t
kill you or make you sick, people would do it to avoid waste. ... Show more content on

Summary Of Brahms Symphony No. 4
Brahms wrote Symphony No. 4 in E Minor in 1884. The work was first performed in Meiningen,
Germany in October 1885 and was an instant success because of its masterful composition and
unique style. Brahms s music and his fourth symphony are often viewed as a bridge between the
music of the baroque and romantic era. Although Brahms is considered to be a romantic composer,
his musicis unique from others because you can hear both the style of older era composers and
features of romantic style in the texture of his works. This combination of baroque and romantic
style in his music helps create more balance in the music, which gives it a blend that captured
audiences and still entrances them today. Brahms was also inspired by study of Beethoven s
symphonies for their orchestral color and harmonic structure; Brahms incorporates these features
he enjoyed into his writing. The fourth movement of Brahms symphony No. 4 is titled Allegro
energico e passianato and is known for its use of the Baroque style of Chaconne and other features
that are found in the Romantic style as well. Some of these include chromaticism, a melody that
jumps between major and minor keys but does not settle into a single mode, and extended
techniques to creature a richness and a wide pallet of sounds.
Brahms was a scholar and had a strong interest in Baroque music. His fourth movement makes use
of the Chaconne style. It is a series of repeated variations and chord progressions, a form of ostinato
or bass

Supply Of Supply Chain Management Essay
Supply Chain Management involves the process of managing, monitoring, controlling and
constantly coordinating supply related activities among manufacturers, suppliers, wholesalers,
retailer and the consumers. All this is done while integrating supply management with demand
management, not only within but also across companies. Since all the processes involved in
managing supply chain activities require a robust system in place, every company turns to
technology for efficient and effective synchronization and smooth deployment of processes along
with careful alignment of resources for timely completion of supply related activities.
One such system that allows firms to manage business and operations and automate time
consuming manual tasks is Enterprise resource planning system, which now is being integrated
with supply chain management by companies worldwide so that they can enjoy access to all
streamlined information related to various functions in the organization on one platform, thereby
saving time and cost. There are countless benefits of ERP within the firm, most of which are
related to allowing the employees in the firm to familiarize themselves with an efficient
streamlining process that not only brings activities in order but also helps tracking loopholes a lot
easier and fun. It is not only the fun use of technology that inspires the employees but also the
clearly defined roles and responsibilities that prevent employees from falling into each other space

In a world where Artificially Intelligent robot police keep the streets in order, smarter inventions are
bound to arise. In the movie Chappie, the main character Chappie, is programmed with a new
system that can make him feel and think independently. This film relates to the philosophers Searle
and Turing due to their similar topics of Artificial Intelligence.
Searle distinguishes two types of Artificial Intelligence which is Strong Artificial Intelligence and
Weak Artificial Intelligence. They are both categorized based on the objectives that the inventors
and researchers are concentrated on attaining. Strong Artificial Intelligence is a computer

On this view intelligence is just being able to imitate or mimic what a human being does. So, a
computer that can pass a turing test is intelligent. Chappie relates to Turing s position because
Chappie speaks and acts the same as a human, if it wasn t for his appearance it would be very
difficult to differentiate Chappie from a human. This film fully supports Turing because Chappie
perfectly represents Strong Artificial Intelligence. As soon as Chappie is created by his inventor,
he establishes a mother and father figure for himself. He grows up the same as a child does, starting
from scratch and learning by watching and listening to his surroundings. Then, Chappie soon gets
his own ideas and opinions the more time goes by. He acts and thinks independently, just the same
as a human being, therefore he is truly intelligent.
The Chinese Room Argument is Searle s refutation of Strong Artificial Intelligence. The idea will
be that we have an entity that will pass a Turing Test, but which clearly lacks intelligence, therefore
it represents Weak Artificial Intelligence. The Chinese Room argument Searle created has an
English speaker in a room with chinese writing and symbols and rules in English for translating a

room intelligent. The answers come out right, but that

The Medieval Church And The Development Of Medieval...
Medieval Theatre was a source of education and reflection for the residents of the Middle Ages.
Serving as an inspiration for Renaissance plays, it took centuries of evolution for Medieval to
accommodate themes outside of the Bible. Theatre in the Middle Ages was an enemy of the
Catholic Church, who tried to terminate these performances. Unusually, the Catholic Church played
a significant role in the development of Medieval Theatre. Although plays were limited to the
themes of the Bible for a long period of time, bizarre masks, costumes and great structuring of
stages were used.
Following the collapse of the Roman Empire, a small group of performers travelled to various
destinations to entertain audiences about all aspects of life. They toured countries and many
regions to tell stories, play music and even perform acrobatic arts. Wherever they went, festivals
emerged. This caused commotion between Religious practitioners, who tried to convert the
performers and end their performances which were deemed sinful. The Catholic Church, which
was highly responsible for the growth of Medieval Theatre, offered a service. This service provided
the dramatization of Biblical stories which were held on church premises. It was not until the 13th
century that religious performances were beginning to be held outside of the church. Medieval
Theatre experienced a fundamental change in its 800 year rule, ending its reign in the 16th century.

The components of the juvenile processes are arrest, detainment, petitions, hearings, adjudications,
dispositions, placement, probation, and reentry. The juvenile justice process operates on the belief
that juvenile offenders are different from adults, in terms of level of responsibility and ability to be
rehabilitated. The main goals for the juvenile justice system is developing new skills, rehabilitation,
assessing possible treatment needs, and successful reentry into the community while maintaining
public safety. As with any system, there are risks and benefits to the cliental. During our course, I
gained a better understanding of the programs designed to help rehabilitate the child or adolescent.
Many programs were designed to develop coping skills, learn new trades, and teach new skills, so
that the child/adolescent would be better equipped to survive on the outside without having to
return to the delinquent behavior that landed them in the system. The trade off to the system would
include learning worse behaviors from other inmates, the effects of being labeled as a delinquent
and being separated from family and community. Minorities are at an even higher risk experiencing
discrimination, being houses with adult inmates who can take advantage of the youth, teach worse
behaviors, and build relationships that carry over into the outside world, increasing the chance that
the youth will become an adult offender. Due to the risks, professional helpers have an opportunity
to intervene and provide alternative interventions throughout the entire juvenile justice

Conscription During WWI
Time Ameliorates Lingual Wounds
Differences of belief between different ethnic, cultural, and racial groups are undoubtedly the
biggest contributor to disputes within the history of the world. WWI started due to a disagreement
between Austria and Hungary, and WWII started because Hitler s beliefs differed from those of the
Jewish. Despite being one of the most accepting countries in the world, Canada is no exception.
Since confederation, there have always been constant disputes between different groups of
Canadians, mainly the French and English community residing in Canada. Although both groups
belong to the same nation, discord arose mainly due to language barriers and different backgrounds.
This being said, the French English relations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the 1960s, the Quiet Revolution occurred in Canada, a struggle in regards to French
Canadians becoming integrated into Canadian society. It was also during this time that many
notable separatist movements emerged from the depths of Quebec, including the Parti

confederation, a new form of association on the basis of equality with English Canada, or
complete independence as a sovereign country. On November 15, 1976, the Parti QuГ©bГ©cois

Troy Aikman Research Paper
One of the keys to the art of building a winner is finding the right personnel to fit your system.
Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett s offensive philosophy stems from his days as a backup
quarterback to Hall of Famer Troy Aikman. In the glory days of the 90s dynasty, Aikman had a
massive offensive line that featured tackles Mark Tuinei and Erik Williams, guards Nate Newton
and Kevin Gogan, and center Mark Stepnoski that gave Aikman enough time to get the football to
his outlets. What the maulers did best was pave the way for the great Emmitt Smith a physical all

Now Garrett, like Turner and Zampese had to work with, has the tools in place for the offense to
be a juggernaut. Starting with the receivers, Garrett has a beast in Dez Bryant (6 2, 225 lbs.)
able to dominate with the same prowess Irvin took to the gridiron, and Terrance Williams (6 2,
208 lbs.) opposite of Bryant with some similarities as Harper (can get up and get the ball). Notice
the comparison in size that Irvin and Harper had? Insert Brice Butler (6 3, 215 lbs.) and the
Cowboys have the ideal receivers wanted in the system prototypical sized route runners able to get

Lots of eyes will be on Butler, who has the size and speed to potentially take over for Williams
the current Z receiver on the roster. Williams should put up better numbers than Mohamad Sanu

Falcons. If Sanu s 33 catches, and near 400 yards receiving last season set the table for the deal he
signed this offseason Williams should be seeking something

Sexual Behavior Since the AIDS Epidemic Essay
Few phenomena have changed the face of sexuality as dramatically as the appearance nearly 30
years ago of the microscopic virus known as HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus. According to

Conversely, a person who inserts his penis into an infected partner is also at risk since HIV can
enter through the urethra or through small cuts, abrasions, or open sores on the penis. Some
people mistakenly believe that only men who have sex with men are at risk of HIV through
anal sex. However, a national study of men and women 15 44 years of age found that 35% of
women have had anal sex with an other sex partner (National Center for Health Statistics, 2005).
Vaginal sex is also another quite risky sexual behavior as an HIV transmission route, especially
for women, and is the most common way HIV is transmitted in much of the world. In women, the
lining of the vagina can tear and possibly allow HIV to enter the body. HIV can also be directly
absorbed through the mucous membranes that line the vagina and cervix (Yarber, Sayad Strong,
2009). Adolescent females are biologically more susceptible to HIV than older women because
their immature cervixes may be more easily infected. However, the virus can enter the bloodstream
through the urethra or through small cuts or open sores on the penis. Menstrual blood containing
HIV can also facilitate transmission of the virus to a sex partner. Some behaviors and conditions
that put individuals at greater risk of contracting HIV include having unprotected

How Is Curley Presented by Steinbeck in of Mice and Men Essay
How is Curley presented by Steinbeck in Of Mice and Men? Curley is one of Of Mice and Men
s major characters. Although he does not appear to hold a central role, he is very important in
other respects. The first of these is the way in which he treats George and Lennie, and the ranch
workers in general on the ranch. Curley is the boss son. Therefore he acts like he is the boss
himself. He orders the others around, and, although it is true that he does hold some power on the

order to vent his anger at being picked on. This turns out to be a mistake. Lennie quickly crushes
his hand, and Curley has to be taken to the hospital. Luckily for George and Lennie, Slim comes
to there aid, telling Curley your hand got caught in a machine . He makes a big show of keeping
his hand soft to caress her, yet also visits the local whorehouse on Saturday night. While he may

The Pros And Cons Of The Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath are a very controversial band which was criticized because of the messages they
were said to send. As Graholm claims in his article Ritual Black Metal Popular Music as Occult
Mediation and Practice , Black Sabbath had a certain flirtation with darker occult themes,
apparent in the name of the band itself as well as in image and lyrics (Granholm 13). Their name
was one of the reasons why they were considered devilish. Nevertheless, their original name was
Earth and the choice of Black Sabbath was only a compromise, because there was another band
with that name in England. Another controversy regards where the name came from. Some
people argue that it derives from a movie called Black Sabbath , and there was also a book
written by Wheatle with this name. Their first album did not refer to Satan at all, but the record
label made it look like it did with the appearance of the Satanist Anton LaVey. The British release
of the album featured an upside down cross inside the cover. These additions were made without the

society the stereotypes that link heavy metal to Satanism should already have been overcome.
Indeed, it was more understandable back in the 1970s when it first appeared, while nowadays
people should be able to see that it is a type of music just like others. Listening to music is not the
cause of massacres such as the Columbine High School Massacre, which was certainly a terrible
event and people should reflect about it, but it should not be connected to music. The real
reflections should regard social contexts which may influence people, or the need that some people

King County Emergency Medical System Case Analysis
Education System King County has an integrated education system that equips society with
necessary knowledge, particularly the first aid cautionaries. Its inclusion in the curriculum of high
school students of the King County ensures that the community at large is informed about how to
respond to emergency situations (Eisenberg, Bergner Hallstrom, 1979). With the knowledge gained
from such training, the students became aware of what is expected of them in regards to offering
first aid care to an emergency. This knowledge is passed to rest of community when students
interact with them. This helps to reduce the number of deaths occurring from certain preventable

Essay on Critical Thinking
The concepts of critical thinking and creative thinking are both gaining increasing importance in
the world today. Critical thinking allows people to understand difficult concepts in a manner that
is clearer and more defined. They can more readily understand those concepts if they employ
critical thinking. In all portions of everyday life, a person is expected to make independent
judgments. Those judgments are based on experience and knowledge. Without the ability to think
critically, every situation that a person comes across would have to be considered in isolation
from all other situations. When a person encounters a problem that is a new one, he or she may be
able to use critical thinking to solve those problems. One... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Critical thinking also helps in decision making. Both problem solving and decision making abilities
are vital to a prosperous business. Persons who are critical thinkers can make a difference in the
companies in which they are employed. Today?s corporations must first recognize that there is a
real need for critical thinkers. It is important for both the top management down the line. Critical
thinking must be taught and built in to the way the company or organization performs its business.
In fact, companies and organizations must embrace the concept of critical thinking. Critical
thinking can lead to success story after success story. This type of impact gives any company or
organization credibility. According to Supon, one of the fundamental purposes of teaching critical
thinking is to enhance the abilities of students to become critical thinkers. Corporate leaders,
educational researchers, employers, and parents have continually pushed teachers to assist their
students in the development of critical thinking ability. Critical thinking is a skill that ?involved not
only knowledge of content by also concept formation and analysis, reasoning and drawing
conclusions, recognizing and avoiding contradiction, and other essential cognitive activities?
(Supon, 1998). There are proposed reasons for the emphasis that is currently on critical thinking.
Many factors can be related to this emphasis. They include the societal factors of economic shifts

Personal Narrative
The air was crisp outside, it was nearing Christmas in our small little city named Belleville.
Everyone seemed to be out and about finishing their last minute Christmas shopping and the city
had a busy, but happy feel to it. The ground had a white blanket of snow on it that had just fallen
during the early hours of the morning. My mom was taking me to the mall so that I could get
pictures taken with Santa, one of my favourite parts about Christmas. As I was sitting in my car seat
all bundled up in my snow suit, clutching my favourite stuffed bunny all I was fixated on was
what to ask Santa for Christmas. I was 7 years old with big brown eyes that glared out the
window with the unruliest hair you could ever imagine. As we stopped at our final red light before
our destination, we both witnessed an extremely bad car wreck. It was one of those car wrecks that
seem to happen in slow motion, so slow that you can almost scream Watch out! . All of a sudden,
the women that I viewed as my ordinary suburban mom dashed out of our warm van to face the
crisp, windy weather. That day she risked her life to save another. She was able to keep the
driver of the SUV stable until the ambulance arrived. This was the first time I ever saw my mom
as the true person she is. Selfless, courageous, she stepped in not even on a first name basis. She
didn t know that person in the SUV and they didn t know her. That was the day that I decided I

/ Grasped at a strong hearted wakeful sleeper/ And was instantly seized himself, claws/ Bent

A Dead Boy
Dewey Skeates had just seen a dead boy. The image had been running through his mind all day.
Blood on his chest and blood on his hands and blood in his mouth. It didn t make any sense.
Death didn t exist. It just wasn t something that was physically possible until someone reached at
least one hundred and fifty years of age or so. The government had issued a statement during the
genetic renaissance that said that the whole population had had their genetic codes altered to
allow for enzymes to quickly fix anything that was broken. Dewey being an incredibly smart boy
for his eleven years, a genius one might even call him, was left stumped by the image that was

had suggested that maybe some people could die but no one knew when they did. He had
wholeheartedly rejected that theory, but it left his mind whirring with possibilities. Oh the endless
possibilities, he thoughtto himself.
Several hours after the days gruesome events, Dewey found himself alone in his room, pondering
the unlikeliness of the situation. His room was filled with a myriad of scientific instruments.
They were strewn across his floor along with several pieces of paper covered in calculations and
ideas. A hamster cage sat on a table in the corner. Dewey stared at the cage. It was home to his

practiced law and wrote Service Afloat and Ashore During the Mexican War, a book about his

seceded from the Union, Semmes was sent north by President Jefferson Davis on a secret mission

Comparing Love in Go Tell It on the Mountain, Giovanni s...
Baldwin s first three novels Go Tell It on the Mountain, Giovanni s Room, and Another Country
boil over with anger, prejudice, and hatred, yet the primary force his characters must contend with
is love. Not meek or mawkish but ...something active, more like fire, like the wind (qtd. in O Neale
126), Baldwins notion of love can conquer the horrors of society and pave the way to emotional
security (Kinnamon 5). His recipecalls for a determined identity, a confrontation with and

Baldwin points to his high school writing as an act of love. It was an attempt not to get the world
s attention it was an attempt to be loved. It seemed a way to save myself and a way to save my
family. It came out of despair (qtd. in Kinnamon 3). Baldwin believes in the redemptive power of
love, the power to save. But first must come despair. All of Baldwin s characters suffer
tremendously, for they live in modern society. Few love. Since suffering is universal but a love
fulfilled is not, suffering alone does not allow one to love, ...but if dealt with courageously...can
lead to self knowledge, self acceptance, and the forging of a genuine self identity (Nelson 122).
With no internal conflicts, one can open up to another person, and love can flower.
This process, however, is rarely completed. In Another Country a vivid portrait of the universal
need for love is suggested by Rufus s interpretation of a saxophonist s improvisation. Rufus plays
in a jazz combo with a young saxophonist who already ...had received the blow from which he
never would recover (9):

and towards the end they run out of the hospital laughing and enjoying the world around them,
their world, the real world. I was talking to a friend of mine who read this book and she compared
Carla and Deborah to the movie Lilo and Stitch and I thought that was a great comparison. In the
movie neither Lilo nor Stitch were accepted in their societies, but when they found each other and
connected they realized that they could discover the world together. There is also a part in that
movie where Lilo, Stitch, Lilos sister, and her sisters friend went surfing and had a whole bunch of
fun just being with each other they weren t paying attention to anyone else, just like Carla and

African American Factual Art
Africans transported to the New World experienced brutal and inhuman treatments because of
their skin color, race and religious ideals. Such ideals especially those of ritual significance were
integrate and synchronize to those of the Western World in order to continue their working models
of heaven without fear. Such religious or sacred objects that Africans reassembled when they were
moved to the New World were the Minkisi (singular: Nkisi) which are powerful objects that educe
healing. For example, the Yombe peoples, Democratic Republic of Congo, Medicine bag (Nkisi
Mbumba Mbondo) , early 20th century (Fig.1) and the Haitian, Pacquet Kongo , 21st century (fig.2)
are both powerful objects combined with earth substances and medicinal... Show more content on

Robert Ferris Thompson also uses figure 1, Mbumba Mbondo to further elaborate the content
and significance that this artifact represented. For instance, in accordance to this artifact the
Kongo viewed this object as a sacred and powerful charm. In Thompson s article the term s
etymology of mbumba is another term for Nkisi, however, mbumba is of higher class, referring
to a higher connection to the dead of Kongo. It also explains that the word mbumba is a
reference to a jar or basket. This jar as analyzed was decorated with materials as mentioned
before and had also great significance such as white buttons symbolizing mystery and the bird
feathers symbolizing power that flies that was meant and believed to be the connection to
heaven. Furthermore, Figure 2 a more recent Nkisi is more vibrant and luminous or as referred
to the illumination to call upon the Iwa. Now, according to Stephen D. Glazier s article, the term
Iwa or Ioa served in reference to spirits or deities, and this comes way back from African origins.
To explain, in Africa the Kongo community would have the priest sanctify the Iwa to allow
practice of devotion as a fellowship. However, in Haiti the relationship

witnessing bullying or harassment particularly towards LGBTQ individuals or derogatory
statements of that nature. The goal of the study was to gain an understanding as to what would

The models included the likelihood of intervening based on hearing homophobic language, teacher
intervention, student intervention and finally a combination of both teacher and student
intervention (Wernick, et al., 2013). No clear procedures as to how the study was administered to
gain these results were given.
Due to how the study was only administered to four schools out of numerous in Michigan, it can be
concluded that the study was a cluster sampling. Cluster sampling can be a disadvantage because it
provides less precision than any other type of sampling. In addition, cluster sampling is not cost
efficient. No specific details were given as to how participants were recruited. For the most part, it
seems that, the school took charge and the researchers simply created the study. In addition to
being a cluster sampling, the study followed the Participatory Action Research (PAR)
methodology, which can also be considered a weakness. This type of methodology is set up so
that individuals who are in this case being bullied are able to express and provide their
experiences and knowledge on the topic. With the information provided, researchers could then
create different solutions or provide suggestions as to how effectively address the issue at hand
(Wernick, et al., 2013). This can be a problem because individuals may be forced to undergo the
reliving of traumatic events that have occurred because of their sexual

Early in the 1900s, women were encouraged to consume liquids for energy throughout their labour by Dr DeLee, an American (Singata, Tranmer, Gyte, 2013). Since then the common practice became to reduce women s intake of food and fluid during labour as a result of a study conducted by Mendelson in the 1940 s. Mendelson found that during a caesarean section with general anaesthetics women who had a full stomach were at a great risk of having their stomach contents entering the lungs during their caesarean section, a condition known as aspiration, which led to serious complications that were fatal (Singata, Tranmer, Gyte, 2013). As this was contributing to a high number of maternal mortality and morbidity the findings of Mendelson was a turning point for the care provided to women in labour. It led to all women labouring, regardless of their risk status of having a caesarean section being advised to restrict their intake of foods and fluids during labour by health care professionals (Singata, Tranmer, Gyte, 2013). Taking place in the early 1960s in Jackson, Mississippi, the perspective of (mainly) two middle aged negro maids (Aibileen Clark and Minny Jackson) were recorded in hopes of setting truth free. Miss Eugenia ( Skeeter ) Phelan, hopeful to be a journalist, claimed that black lives were not as pleasant as portrayed, therefore she desired to reveal the truth behind their lives through a book of interviews. The film, The Help, while not going in depth is quite historically accurate through the depiction of social classes, racial segregation, the Jim Crow laws, and the Civil Rights Movement (dealing with racism, violence, and homicide).... While many would say that the Civil Rights Movement was barely covered in the film, this section alone utters a thousand words. When Eugenia Phelan s supervisor, Elaine Stein, conveys to Phelan to speed her novel up, then she is implying that the movement could pass at any moment. Implying that rather instead of a movement, it was just a temporary period of uprisings. While Elaine Stein had all the best intentions in assisting the blacks by publishing the book, what she said can be implied as what numerous whites were thinking. With the Civil Rights Movement came a lot of violence and murder. Medgar Evers was a prominent leader within the movement until Byron Beckwith assassinated him in 1963 (A Critical Review of the novel The Help). In the film when Evers dies, the bus let all blacks off, and then takes the rest of the whites home. However, one movement stands out in particular and it is known as Pop Art. Pop Art was invented by a few younger artists by the name of Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, and Roy Lichtenstein. It was brought about in the 1960s and it helped define a new form of American Realism. Its origin was sort of a lash out against Abstract Expressionism, which was a style of painting. The point of pop artwas to represent life as most Americans lived it. It pointed out the simple things that Americans find themselves caught up in in everyday life. Pop Art represented a world focused around popular culture, which is basically what is hot in America at the time. Pop Art brought about the reality that America revolved around the culture of things like Wall Street Finance and Madison Avenue Advertising. It sort of presented the thought that maybe Americans weren t so hard to get through to or to understand. Pop Art revealed the pop culture in America and made beautiful art in return. It helped turn the page in the art world that was leaving traditional media, like painting, in the wind. The Constraints Of Language Help Define Our Notion Of Romance The constraints of language help define our notion of romance, writes Mark Steyn, and in English we re more constrained than most. There are just four and a half rhymes for love, approximately three quarters of which offer very meagre possibilities. What is remarkable, in a way, is that there should be any rhymes at all. If language is differential at its base, if differences of sound and sense are the only markers of meaning (Norris 24 5), then similarity the relative lack of difference should, if anything, tend toward meaninglessness. In practice this is not so. [T]hese chance resemblances of sound and spelling are as ingrained in language as the chance dissemblances they interact with, and they are easily exploited (or easily tempt those who would exploit them) to suggest a natural affinity between objects or concepts which logically [possess] none (Lanham 179). That s why the rhymes with loveproblem is a problem: English has difficulty talking about love, not because love is not adequately distinguished from other words, but because it is not adequately associated with them. Stanley Styne s lyric to the song There s No Such Thing illustrates the peculiar situation of Anglophone love. It contains three of Steyn s four and a half rhymes,1 and the manner in which it uses them in a way, the fact that it uses them inevitably undercuts the frank meaning of the song. Therefor, biotechnology is the manipulation of organisms primarily in the fields of agriculture, food science, and medicine to modify and enhance products, plants, and animals as well as develop other microorganisms to invent useful things or solve problems. Beer is one of the oldest beverages humans have produced, likely dating back to the dawn of cereal agriculture around 10,000 B.C.E. in ancient Mesopotamia, the region of southwest Asia currently occupied by Iraq. No one is completely sure how the process of beer making was discovered, or who first discovered it, but the alcoholic commencement is considered to have transpired when an early Sumerian farmer stumbled upon some starchy or sugary material like fruit juice or bread that got wet and began to ferment within a few days resulting in an inebriating brew. The reason someone would have thought to taste food that had been decomposing for days was most likely because during that time period, no one would have dreamed of wasting any food, even if it smelled a bit funny. The work was first performed in Meiningen, Germany in October 1885 and was an instant success because of its masterful composition and unique style. Brahms s music and his fourth symphony are often viewed as a bridge between the music of the baroque and romantic era. Although Brahms is considered to be a romantic composer, his musicis unique from others because you can hear both the style of older era composers and features of romantic style in the texture of his works. This combination of baroque and romantic style in his music helps create more balance in the music, which gives it a blend that captured audiences and still entrances them today. Serving as an inspiration for Renaissance plays, it took centuries of evolution for Medieval to accommodate themes outside of the Bible. Theatre in the Middle Ages was an enemy of the Catholic Church, who tried to terminate these performances. Unusually, the Catholic Church played a significant role in the development of Medieval Theatre. Although plays were limited to the themes of the Bible for a long period of time, bizarre masks, costumes and great structuring of stages were used. Following the collapse of the Roman Empire, a small group of performers travelled to various destinations to entertain audiences about all aspects of life. They toured countries and many regions to tell stories, play music and even perform acrobatic arts. Wherever they went, festivals emerged. This caused commotion between Religious practitioners, who tried to convert the performers and end their performances which were deemed sinful. The Catholic Church, which was highly responsible for the growth of Medieval Theatre, offered a service. This service provided the dramatization of Biblical stories which were held on church premises. What the maulers did best was pave the way for the great Emmitt Smith a physical all around back the offense centralized their gameplans around. However, a national study of men and women 15 44 years of age found that 35% of women have had anal sex with an other sex partner (National Center for Health Statistics, 2005). Vaginal sex is also another quite risky sexual behavior as an HIV transmission route, especially for women, and is the most common way HIV is transmitted in much of the world. In women, the lining of the vagina can tear and possibly allow HIV to enter the body. HIV can also be directly absorbed through the mucous membranes that line the vagina and cervix (Yarber, Sayad Strong, 2009). Adolescent females are biologically more susceptible to HIV than older women because their immature cervixes may be more easily infected. Although he does not appear to hold a central role, he is very important in other respects. The first of these is the way in which he treats George and Lennie, and the ranch workers in general on the ranch. Curley is the boss son. Therefore he acts like he is the boss himself. He orders the others around, and, although it is true that he does hold some power on the ranch, he does not hold any respect from the workers. As Graholm claims in his article Ritual Black Metal Popular Music as Occult Mediation and Practice , Black Sabbath had a certain flirtation with darker occult themes, apparent in the name of the band itself as well as in image and lyrics (Granholm 13). Their name was one of the reasons why they were considered devilish. Nevertheless, their original name was Earth and the choice of Black Sabbath was only a compromise, because there was another band with that name in England. Another controversy regards where the name came from. Some people argue that it derives from a movie called Black Sabbath , and there was also a book written by Wheatle with this name.
