Essay on Theme of Death in White Noise
White Noise
Death is probably the most feared word in the English language. Its undesired uncertainty threatens
society s desire to believe that life never ends. Don DeLillo s novel White Noise tells the bizarre
story of how Jack Gladney and his family illustrate the postmodern ideas of religion, death, and
popular culture. The theme of death s influence over the character mentality, consumer lifestyle, and
media manipulation is used often throughout DeLillo s story. Perhaps, the character most
responsive to death is Jack Gladney. In fact, he is so consumed by his fear of death that his ordinary
thought processes are often interrupted by the question: Who will die first (DeLillo 15)? In Jack s
mind: This question comes up from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Duvall notes that forms of credit...are crucial to Jack s function as a consumer, and Jack stops
thinking about death by thinking of it in terms of a credit card: a way to delay the payment
process(136). Furthermore, Jack uses his credit to create a sense of power over his fear of
death. I sent clerks into their fabric books and pattern books to search for elusive designs. I
began to grow in value and self regard. I filled myself out, found new aspects of myself, located
a person I d forgotten existed....The more money I spent, the less important it seemed. I was
bigger than these sums (DeLillo 83 84). According to Mark Conroy, author of From Tombstone
to Tabloid: Authority Figured in White Noise, this illustrates what one could call DeLillo s Law
of Consumption: that people expend money in direct proportion to their fear of death or
dishonor (102). Again, Jack would hide the idea of death through shopping by purchasing items
that gave him a fresh, new look; a look that death would not give because death is old and bland.

The Temperance Movement Of Antebellum America
Antebellum Temperance The Temperance Movement in Antebellum America was one of the
largest moral reforms of in 1800s. Several members of the community fought for the prohibition
of alcohol, rather than just limiting the about being consumed. However, many farmers argued
that the society and its desire to eradicate King Alcohol as temperance advocates often termed
alcoholic beverages were a scheme to deprive the people of their liberty. Starting with main in the
1851, twelve states and territories outlawed the consumptions of alcohol. Temperance leaders
came about and the movement created many different temperance groups that later used an
assortment of tactics and persuasion to get their points across such as political, art, and even
education. During the first great wave of temperance protest lasting from the 1830s through the
1850s, working class radicals and union organizers had urged temperance as necessary to both
self improvement and resistance to workplace oppression. The American Temperance Society was
one of the first of groups to be established in 1826. Many other similar groups then began to
follow their lead. The brotherhoods temperance activity incorporated aspects of earlier working
class and middle class temperance efforts. For example, The Cold Water Army took pledges to only
drink water. Another group by the name of The Washingtonians worked together to form a support
group to help each other with their drinking problems, and encouraging no

Who Is Sydney Carton Alienated In A Tale Of Two Cities
The time before and during the French Revolution was one of the most gruesome periods ever
existed. The monarchs and clergies could do anything they wanted, including murdering innocent
people and escaped punishment due to their extreme influence in the government. In contrast,
commoners and peasants started to die of diseases, starvation, and other extreme circumstances.
Another tragic occurrence that happened to the commoners, was being punished in unspeakable
ways. If a commoner was accused of a crime, they would almost instantly be found guilty and be
sentenced to imprisonment and/or death. In A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, the
circumstances above were shown through a major character named Sydney Carton. Carton was

Subway s type of ownership is franchise. Subway was founded in the year 1965 in state of
Connecticut in the United States of America by Fred DeLuca who 17 years old at the time and

Finding Acceptance In White Trash Primer By Lacy Johnson
Finding Acceptance
Culture is not the only thing that defines us. As human beings, one of the most important questions
someone can ask themselves is, who am I? They can try to answer that question regarding their
culture, or where they come from. When listing out their differences and similarities with people
they encounter in life, the subject of identity and culture comes up. Literature has been a huge
defining subject when associating itself with culture. Tone, subjects, food, and the way people live
is a common aspect when regarding the human culture. People can relate to cultures and identify
themselves as to the way the story, essay or poem is written. It is a way to make people understand
their culture as well. The use of literature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They laugh at him, call him names and even trip him as he walks by. One day, he sees an
elephant just sitting there. He keeps telling the reader over and over again that he doesn t want
to shoot the elephant. He even states he admires the elephant, but when he hears the locals
behind him chanting and telling him to shoot this creature, he gets excited. He then, after going
against everything he believes, shoots the elephant. These people practically clown this guy
every single day by tripping him and making fun of him behind of his back, and yet he shoots
this animal because they wanted him to. The way I looked at this situation is that the police
officer in this instance wanted to fit in really bad and got pleasure in having the crowd cheer
him on and he felt like he belonged so he did something that he felt was wrong. He did something
he wouldn t normally do to fit in. That is how our society works in this country as well. We make
people do a lot of things that are against their social norms to fit in. This is what made the poor
man shoot the elephant. Even though these people mocked him and made him feel bad, he
conformed to them. The problem with that is that in order to come over to this country, you have
to practically conform to the culture of the U.S. in order to survive in the society we live in.
Another take on this is how he says that he

Intro Who is he? Henry Ford ( 1863 1943 ) was one of America s foremost industrialists. He
revolutionized production of the automobile/transportation. Ford was born on July 30, 1863, in a

controversy for his pacifist stance during the early years of World War 1 and earned widespread

Having a strong set of ethics prepares you with the tools you need to be a critical thinker and
make proper decisions. Being aware of how you learn best is important as you want to use your
time effectively and use platforms in which you know you will retain the information better. It is
important to be able to reflect on our life and find ways of fixing what is not working effective.
Learning is not just academic but also personal.
Critical thinking is one of the main objectives in higher education. A critical thinker analyzes all
options and makes an argument based on facts. To be a critical thinker you have to be able to
look at different points of view openly and explore them as possibilities. You also have to able to
think logically and analyze the information and find evidence to back it up. When all information
is collected and analyzed, a critical thinker could create an argument with confidence. To become a
better critical thinker I will work on mastering Benjamin Bloom s taxonomy of learning which
states that for maximize learning we need to master this 6 levels of thinking: knowledge,
comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. When I m studying and going
through course work I will keep this 3 levels in mind and will practice each level. The goal is to
think all the way to level 6 which is creating an idea from the information learned. Mastering critical

My Complicated Family History
The mix of my complicated family history and my strong supportive mother have shaped me into
the person that I am today. My biological father, Clint, battled with a secret drug addiction that my
sweet mother knew nothing about until it was too late. When I was only a year old, the drug
addiction had gotten the best of Clint and he made the decision to take his own life, leaving me and
my motherheart broken. Clint s choices impacted my life in such ways that I cannot explain.
Growing up, it was just me and my mother until I was four, however, in this time we took the bad
situation that we were in and we did not let it get the best of us. We chose to move forward and to
take positive things from this horrific time. We learned through this experience that life goes on. No
matter how hard the situation is, you must move on. Learning this mentality at such a young age
has taught me that I cannot fret the small things, I have to look at the bigger picture because that is
what really matters. My mother is truly such an amazing woman and her guidance has shaped me
into the young woman that I am. We have battled through so many hardships together but she has
always taught me that I can and will get through everything life throws at me. My mother could
have chosen to give up when my biological... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

friend Riley. I catch myself feeling as though I have a relatively normal life, but when I take a step
back and look, my life had the opportunity to go in a very negative direction and truthfully I had a
good reason for it to so. However, my mother and I chose to move on and today we do live a

The Pros And Cons Of Medical Malpractice
Introduction According to Attorney.com, Ohio malpractice law defines medical malpractice as
when a medical professional, such as a doctor or a nurse, or a medical institution, such as a
hospital, injures a patient during the course of a treatment. Furthermore, for this injury to be able to
be considered medical malpractice, the doctor s actions must represent a breach, or violation, of
the standard of care. A standard of care is defined as the generally accepted practices and
procedures that all medical professionals in the area would administer for a patient sufferingfrom a
particular ailment. This standard of care varies depending on a number of factors, including the
patient s general health as well as his or her age. According to the Ohio court of claims On June

Trip To Haiti
In the fall of 2014 I was presented with the opportunity to go on a missions trip to Zambia. We

impact this would have on my life. Haiti is not know for much but it is known for being poor.
This might dissuade people from visiting, but for me it was exactly what I needed. We got to
Haiti and even in the airport saw the people desperate for money to feed themselves and their
families. We took a ten passenger plane up the mountain and as we flew we were able to see the
poverty in the towns below. There were houses made up of four corner poles with a tin roofs.

To What Extent Does the Mise-En-Scene in †Night of the...
To what extent does the Mise en Scene in Night of the Hunter reinforce an understanding of the film
s mood, character and narrative themes?
The term Mise en Scene is used to signify the director s control over what happens in the film
frame. In English the phrase literally translates to putting in the scene (Bordwell, 2010a). Night of
the Hunter (Charles Laughton, 1955) is a prime example of a film that uses aspects of Mise en
Scene to sway the audience s opinions of characters and their understanding of narrative themes and
to create a certain atmosphere in the film. Although the fundamental aspects of Mise en Scene in
both theatre and cinema are those of lighting, blocking and production design (costume, props and

The way the actor fluctuates between being composed and being suddenly aggressive expresses
the psychotic nature of his personality. However, even when he is composed the actor still manages
to give an unsettling performance. Although a lot of this is communicated through lighting
techniques and non diegetic music, the actor was required to give a rather edgy performance. This
performance in Night of the Hunter allows, in the narrative, the more strong minded characters
such as John Harper and Rachel Cooper to see through his disingenuity. We are shown Rachel
Cooper and John Harper s discomfort by their facial expressions, most prominently when Reverend
Powell is giving his speeches about love and hate.
The costume of Reverend Powell is also instrumental to the narrative in Night of the Hunter as the
he relies upon his typical preacher outfit to fool the unsuspecting characters, the costume having
obvious connotations of good morals. Similarly, makeup is employed in this film but this time to
signify a progression in narrative. This is apparent when the kids are on the journey down the
river, their eyes made dark with makeup. This indicates to the audience that the children have been
travelling for a long time. The setting of the river is also significant in this film. Just like the

Traditional Burgers on the Grill
If you want to enjoy a grilled burger on your indoor grill, you can cook with lean hamburger. The
type of the seasonings that you use will matter for the calorie count, too. We suggest using dry
seasonings that won t add many calories. Salt and pepper are simple ingredients that can add an
incredible amount of flavor. After the meat is cooked, add vegetables and onions for a great burger
that doesn t need a ton of condiments.
Instead of using hamburger or adding pork to the mixture, you can use turkey burger for a lighter
alternative to burger meat. You can add the same seasonings to the turkey and have a flavorful
burger that will definitely have less fat and calories.
Either way, the grill will pull the fat and grease away from the meat and channel it down into the
drip tray where you won t have to worry about putting that grease into your body.
Pork Grilling
Any cut of pork that has loin in the name is one that has less fat. For example, pork tenderloin is
one of the leanest parts of the meat. Country style ribs have less calories than baby back or spare
ribs, too. That s because country style ribs have a dry rub instead of smearing barbecue sauce on the

I strongly disagree and believe that if someone cannot consider their house a home, it has a lot to
do with the attitudes of those living in it. I also believe that a house is the place where most
teenagers remain until, at least, the age of eighteen because of not being able to afford their
own house. On the other hand, they all belong to a home where, whether or not they admit it,
they will always have a loving family to welcome them into their hearts. Many of them tend to
feel this way because as they grow older they begin to only think of themselves and become very
self centered or selfish. These feelings of selfishness usually do not change until teenagers begin
progressing into adulthood. If a teenager sees how their selfishness negatively affects their family
and they begin to change their ways, while still in their teenage years, this change is usually the
cause of a bad event that left them lonely and in the dark. This event could have been something
along the lines of tough love from family members which caused this person to look back on
events they regretted from the past and helped them to look forward to changing these actions for a
better future. Many of my friends complain about not being happy at home and how much they just
cannot wait to move out of the house. When I hear them complaining about this, the first thing that

Targets Acquisition of Bed Bath and Beyond
Identifying and Overcoming HR Challenges during Merger and Acquisition Activity
HROB*4060 Human Resources Planning
March 22nd, 2013
The goals of mergers range from reducing the number of competitors, to access of new products
(Belcourt et al., p 330). Statistics show that 80% of new product developments fail (Howells,
2011), partly due to challenges and conflicts with human resources functions. Mergers and
acquisitions are the fastest way to enter new markets. It is estimated that 1/3 of all mergers fail due
to faulty integration of diverse operations and cultures, (Chhinzer, 2013). Therefore, the success of
a merger or acquisition lies in the ability to guide, motivate, retain, and effectively use ... Show

As a fortune 500 company (Corporate profile, 2013) BBAB has clearly had success in the
Canadian market. The goal is to achieve synergies in supply chain, operations, and advertising from
BBAB. Although the US and Canada have similar cultures, there will be slight differences in laws,
regulations, values, and norms. BBAB s advertising strategy should be used as a starting point to
create Target Canada s advertising campaign.

HR Planning
Contingency Plan:
In order for an acquisition to be successful from a planning perspective, there are three main areas
that need to be addressed. First, a contingency plan must be developed. The contingency plan will
be created once Target s board of directors has expressed interest in the acquisition of BBAB. This
plan will identify who the trained coordinator is for each company in merger management. It also
outlines the chain of command, commutation mediums, procedures to be followed during the
acquisition, and identifies the members of the transition team who will assist the remainder of the
employees during the acquisition. This contingency plan is of the utmost importance as it contains
the steps to be taken by each side to have the smoothest transition into a single company.
Because Target recently acquired Zellers leaseholds and has taken over their stores, they are
familiar with the transitions

Compare and contrast the ways in which the theme of isolation is presented and explored by
Sebastian Faulks and T.S Eliot in Engleby and Selected Poems . Throughout both Engleby and
Selected Poems there is a prevailing sense of apprehension of the tenuousness of human existence
which is evident in the protagonists confining inability to communicate with the world around
them, as seen in Prufrock s agonised call, so how should I presume? . The Wasteland was written by
Eliot to address the fragmentation and alienation characteristic of [contemporary] culture ,

This suggests his isolation yet the reader cannot be certain whether this is his own disinterest in
involving himself in social life, or whether it had been due to his childhood and conditioning by
others I tried to join in the communal joke once. But only once. The narrative style makes it
difficult to find the reason why Engleby only attempted to join in the joke once . This theme of
isolation is continued throughout the novel with his cowboy tie at the dinner with Stellings, in
contrast to his music obsession: Off the top of my head, I can think of at least ten orchestral
tunes. Prufrock finds himself in a similar situation, questioning Do I dare/ Disturb the universe?
the alliteration emphasising his feeling of isolation and uncertainty on what action he should

some extent he does see death as a form of escape . This idea has some merit due to his belief
that the brief stint in humanity is pointless , and is almost as terrified of the idea of living
forever as he is of dying young. This is parallel to Sybil in The Burial of the Dead : I will show

The Danger Of A Single Story By Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
he world is a diverse place. Many cultures, societies and religions, each of them having rich
histories. Due to such abundance of knowledge, being unaware of a society or culture is
common. However, having the wrong idea of a culture or a community could potentially be a
devastating problem. In fact, this is a prevalent problem as false lies about communities are easily
spread out to group of people, the so called fake news problem. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichieis an
Nigerian author who addresses this problem in her TED Talk at Oxford, England. She asserts
that single stories of a place/community can create a critical misunderstanding. Moreso, the
problem is more pervasive than previously thought. They are not necessarily harmful yet
pervasive. For example, subtle stereotypes such as all Asians only want to be engineers and
doctors or every college dropout is an utter failure. Due to such pervasiveness and consequences,
open mindedness is of utmost importance in order to have a peaceful and a more understanding
world or in author s terms, When we realize that there is never a single story about any place, we
will regain a kind of paradise .
In The danger of a single story , Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie argues that having a narrow
perspective of a community, person or a nation can create a critical misunderstanding. Ms.Adichie
provides an example where she believed that only people with white skin and blue eyes can exist in
literature because all the characters in the books

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Inventory Management Systems
3.2 Inventory Management Systems
Inventory management system is a system that combines the use of desktop software, barcode
scanners, barcode printers, and mobile devices to streamline the management of inventory. This
system involves procurement, storage, identification, retrieval, transport and construction methods.
Each is indelibly linked to safety, productivity and schedule performance. There are some inventory
management problems that can occur in the companies.
3.2.1 Too much distressed stock in inventory
Distressed stock is materials or products in inventory that has or will soon pass the point where it
can be sold at the normal price before it expires. This situation usually happens in grocery stores.

The job order costing system determines the cost of a product or service based upon three
components of price. They include direct materials, direct labour and manufacturing overhead such
as the electricity used to run machines on a production line. There are some weaknesses of using
job costing system in the calculation of the cost in the companies.
3.3.1 Combination of Actual and Estimated Cost
One of the main problems of using job order costing is the incompatible between when the
quotation is made and when the costs actually become known. Generally, prices need to be quoted
before production starts, but by using this system, the costs are known only after completing the
job. The companies are able to calculate the actual cost of labour and material charges but for the
overhead cost, only able to estimate. Therefore, there is an inaccuracy because the companies may
take a loss if they quote too low or will loss customers if they quote too high. The construction
industry and ship building industry always face these problems as the companies works on

Piano Reflection
Everything was progressing smoothly as my fingers traversed the terrain of my upright piano
until, inevitably, an all too familiar, jarring chord rang from its core. Although I wanted nothing
more than to disregard my repeated blunder and never look back, I knew that this strategy would
fall short when I performed the piece for my teacher the following day. So with perseverance,
focus, and fear of a disapproving glare, I managed to play it through faultlessly. Now all that
remained was the small task of playing the piece an additional four times in a row with that same
impeccable accuracy. Upon realizing the amount of work ahead of me, I mentally kicked myself for
not starting sooner and lengthened my timer from the remaining twelve minutes to another thirty. It
was time to woodshed this until I got it right every time.
Playing the piano has been a rewarding experience for me throughout my life for not only
granting me the skill of playing, but also for teaching me lessons that can be applied to my
academic and personal life. One of the most valuable lessons I have learned from piano is the
ability of breaking down a seemingly unsolvable problem into its basic components or, in the terms
of my piano teacher, woodshedding. For non musicians, woodshedding might be an unfamiliar term
and may even sound fictitious, but rest assured, it is a legitimate word denoting the practice of an
instrument. However, my piano teacher had a more distinct interpretation. The first time I

The Punishment Of Prison System
In principle, prison system plays important role in the society through reforming and punishing
offenders sent to prison and preventing potential offenders. In recent years, there has been a
significant increase in the number of in prisoners in the US prisons system, because prison is used
as the primary correction facility for offenders while ensuring justice to offended (Guerino 20).
Prisons comprise of offenders who are above the county jail level. Further, inmates comprise of
people from different background. That is; differentrace, education levels, nationality, and religion
(Wilkinson 1099). Essentially, prisonsystem is designed to maintain law and order in the society.
Mainly, correction faculties are equipped with educational, training programs and counseling to
reform convicted offenders. This essay seeks to assess the responsibility of the prison system to
offenders as well as to the citizenry.
Initially, prisons were designed as penitent punitive in nature. This approach aims at issuing
punishment to offenders or seeks retribution from those who are involved in serious crime. It
involved incarceration and flogging offenders as a way of suppressing unwanted behavior (Morris
and Tonry 79). This is meant to reform minds of the offender through inflicting punishment and
scare potential criminals from committing crime. However, this approach may fail to achieve its
objective if it is implemented without combing with other programs to reform the minds of the

The Importance Of Piracy In The Music Industry
The music industry has been on the decline ever since new ways to pirate music have become
available. In fact, the Recording Industry Association of America estimates that six percent of the
U.S. gross domestic product is generated by the entertainment industry and that the music industry
contributes significantly to this. Bender and Wang found that a one percent increase in piracy
results in a 0.6 percent decrease in musicsales, which could put major companies out of business.
While the walls of text appear intimidating, the reasoning and explanations proved to be valuable
and precise. Bender and Wang s article emphasizes the importance of not supporting music piracy,
but the dull text loses its intended effect by boring the reader. Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) are
a threat to all age groups and can be caused by a multitude of things. In fact, 1.4 million people

who do receive a TBI, music education, which can be anything from listening, singing, producing,

Planet Of Slums By Mike Davis
In the book, Planet of Slums Mike Davis discusses, why there are mast migration from the rural
villages to the megacities of the Third World. What megacities are is a city when the total
population in it exceeds over eight million. He also discusses how the treason of the state,
international banks and the ideas thinkers like Hernando de Soto makes the lives of people in the
urban south much worse. Urban south are cities like Mexico City, Delhi, Dhaka, Cairo, Beijing,
Lima and etc (Davis 4) that experience in major increase in population by more than ten times its
size from 1950 to 2004, it is cities in the third world. Mike Davis believed that, the government,
international banks and thinkers such as Hernando de Soto are the one responsible for making the
condition in the urban south terrible for the poor while good only for the officials and the rich.
Mike Davis says that after 1950, people moved from villages to the cities despite knowing that
the condition in those cities are bad. [In urban south people are poor and hungry so they do any
job to make money. Such as, picking up cigarette bud, selling body parts, and etc]An example that,
Mike Davis gives is why the population in the cities at china is increasing.
It is, instead, the small to medium sized cities and recently city ized towns that have absorbed the
majority of the rural labor power made redundant by post 1979 market reforms. In part, this is the
result of conscious planning: since the 1970s the

critics blamed the acting of Marlin Brando, as a cause for people sympmathizing with him. The

Narrative Essay About Going To The Beach
It was finally summer vacation and my family and I decided to go to the beach as soon as the
last day of school ended. While I sat in my seat in class, the anticipation of going to the beach
kept me from concentrating, all I saw was the teacher s familiar mouth formations, speaking to
the class about some Post World War Two battle involving a conspiracy about Hitler and the
Nazi regime in the classroom. I sat there, in the tan metal chair attached to the wooden desk next
to the wall, waiting. Time passed by and my excitement increased as I rushed out of the room,
down the dim hallway, past the office out the glass, front doors to see my family parked in the
teeming parking lot. As soon as I got into the car, my dad hit the gas pedal and we were off to
our beloved destination. Hours passed and we neared the beach, and I could see the ocean and
the grainy sand. We were almost there and I could not contain my enthusiasm. I was as excited
as a kid on Christmas morning! We got to the parking lot and I could see the towering building
above me awaiting my presence. I leaped out of the car with my items and headed straight to the
glass doors. I sped up the stairs, to the third floor, down the hallway, to the sixth door on the
right. I dropped my stuff off into the room and went straight outside and out to the beach because
I could not wait any longer. Wow. I said as I stuck my feet in the scorching sand and felt the heat
pass in between my toes as I walked across the beach. I

Alzheimer s Disease Of The Scientific World Essay
In 1906, Alzheimer s disease entered the scientific world. Till this day, it is one of the most
studied neurodegenerative diseases. Researchers have come a long way with scientific outcomes
on the disease, but unfortunately there is no official cure, or a concise reason on how this disease
is generated. The disease has been recognized to being genetic and affecting people in their later
years, roughly around their sixtieth year. Alzheimer s disease affects the person s memory,
language, judgment and even their daily tasks. While the disease continues to dramatically
progress, it begins to affect all regions of the brain, causing the person to lose almost all of their
functions. When the person has reached their final stage, they are no longer able to recognize
themselves or their surroundings and would need full time dependent care. According to the
Alzheimer s Association (alz.org, 2016), the person may have up to eight years max to live after
diagnosis.
There are several methods in diagnosing Alzheimer s disease such as: asking the person about
their family medical history, conducting memory tests, carrying out standard medical tests (urine
and blood) and brain scans like CT s, MRI s and PET s (NIH.gov, 2016). The only way the disease
can be verified is after death, because brain tissue can then be studied for a complete diagnosis
(NIH.gov, 2016).

Reflection Paper On Immigration In America
Puebla is a city in east central Mexico, southeast of Mexico City. Puebla is known for its culinary

immigration issues, and sexual violence. I had the opportunity to visit this city twice between
sophomore and senior year. Both visits shaped me in a drastic way and changed my view on many
things. The most formative event that occurred during my experience in Puebla took place in an
immigrationcenter. My views regarding immigration prior to visiting this center were always in a
state of fluctuation. I never really knew or even cared how I stood on the idea of immigration,
but once I arrived there everything changed. It was a gloomy day and we had driven a long three
hours to plainly get to the center, everyone was in a somber mood and just wanted to go home.
The moment I walked into the center I knew something special was about to happen to me. The
atmosphere was bubbling and the people there were beautiful in their own right. After listening to
presentations about immigration we were given the opportunity to explore the facility. Looking
around all I saw was joy and laughter, this challenged me. How could people in such desperate

Diction, Symbolism, And Imagery In Robinson s Richard Cory
The Grass is Always Greener on the Other Side:
Diction, Symbolism and Imagery in Robinson s Richard Cory Oftentimes in poetry, something
that appears simple is, in fact, very complex upon deeper evaluation. Edwin Arlington Robinson
does exactly this in his poem, Richard Cory, by creating an accessible poem that can then be
picked apart to reveal a deeper meaning. Upon first glance, the poem appears to be an interesting
narrative about the idolization of a rich aristocrat from the perspective of a poor commoner with
whom he interacts. However, upon closer evaluation, a different meaning can be discovered; the
idea that desirable situations often contain negative attributes that people are unaware of or
overlook. This is achieved through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, the phrase fluttering pulses could mean the townspeople being nervous in his
present or could be seen as a symbol to represent romantic interests (159). Another symbol
appears in the line, He was a gentleman from sole to crown (158). The word crown has two
meanings in this usage (158). The most apparent definition is that it is the top of his head;
however, symbolically it is a reference to a king. Thus, drawing this parallel emphasizes the status
that Richard Cory holds within their community. Using the word crown also leads to many
inferences on the speaker s opinion of Cory, without them actually having to be stated (158). The
stereotypical image of a king is that of someone who is regal, rich, kind, fair and more, which is
all indicated within that one word. A third symbol is the analogies to meat and bread in the last
stanza. In this the speaker is making a statement about socioeconomic classes, but in a more
eloquent way. Bread is a euphemism for being poor, because it is all that they could afford to
eat. The word bread also references the Roman idea of panem et circenses, or bread and circuses.
This phrase indicates the idea that as long as the poor are fed and entertained, they will remain in
their impoverished state. The speaker curses the bread because that is all that he can afford to eat,
but does nothing more drastic, because he is not going hungry and his situation could be much
worse (159). Meanwhile, having the ability to eat meat was a sign of status, because it meant you
had enough money to buy more expensive food. This comparison of bread and meat highlights the
speaker s longing for the things that he does not have, the meat, without appreciating the fact that at
least he can afford to eat bread. It also indicates that he is only thinking about Richard Cory in the
shallowest way possible, what he can buy, rather than who

Discrimination in Harrison Bergeron, after you my dear...
Discrimination in the Short Stories, Harrison Bergeron, after you my dear Alphonse, and The
Lottery
The trait of discrimination is the basis for the stories, Harrison Bergeron, after you my dear
Alphonse, and Lottery. Discrimination is when someone is hated or acted upon negatively for the
reason of race, sex, or nationality. In the short stories the author s feelings of discrimination are
expressed through the characters differently. In these stories the author has his own feelings and
thought depicted through the characters. By the popular theme of discrimination and racism it
suggests that these stories were written in the late sixties early seventies.
In the story Harrison Bergeron the whole country is handicapped except for ... Show more content

This shows discrimination against everyone because they are taking that person s freedom away
and judging them on their looks and abilities. A man named Harrison who would be a sport super
star in real life because of his outstanding talent is fitted with weights and other handicaps to make
him like everyone else. He revolts and overcomes his handicaps but is soon killed for breaking the
law. In this story discrimination plays a big part in how the main character revolts.
The next example is in the story, after you my dear alphonse. In this story a boy becomes friends
with an African American boy named Boyd and brings him home for lunch, when he gets home
his mother is shocked to see her son with this boy. The mother assumes that the father works hard
labor in the fields and that the boy will grow up and do the same. But that?s not the case, the boys
father works in a factory. This is an example of discrimination because the mother assumes things
just because he is black.
The last example of discrimination as a theme for a short story is in The Lottery. In this story a
community has a lottery every year and the winner is stoned to death. The theme of discrimination
is shown when they just pick a random person and kill them. That discriminates against that person
because they show hate for little or no reason.

The Role Of Transformation In Gothic Literature
How can gothic literature be so scary but so interesting at the same time? Transformation plays a
chief role in gothic literature. For example, transformation makes the characters and the plot
scarier. In the stories Where is Here? , The Fall of the House of Usher and the movie Disturbia
the characters and the plot transform making the story scarier and more intriguing. To begin, in
the story Where is Here? The stranger that comes to visit his childhood home starts off as a nice
man but as the story goes on, he transforms into a very weird mysterious man. He says weird
things like, We ve all been dead they ve all been dead a long time. (Oates 19). When he says this,
he is talking about him and his family but it is strange that he

Criminal Law
Doctrine of vicarious liability
The doctrine of vicarious liability generally operates within the law of torts. It has become well
established in English law and historically has been called Master and Servant liability, which
clearly indicates the circumstances in which the doctrine becomes applicable in tort law.
The general rule in tort law is that a person who authorises a tort will personally be liable for
damage or harm as a result. However, vicarious liability defines the circumstances in which a
person is liable for the torts of another without express authorisation or ratification. The most
common example of vicarious liability is the liability of an employer for the torts of his employees
committed in the course of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Court of Appeal case of Mattis v. Pollock (t/a Flamingos Nightclub) a nightclub owner was
held vicariously liable for the violent acts of an employed doorman. The Court of Appeal applied
the rationale of Lister and held that a broad approach was required in assessing whether an
individuals acts were sufficiently connected with the duties of his employment so as to justify
imposing vicarious liability.
Vicarious Liability under a statutory duty
An employer can also be held vicariously liable for an employee s breach of a statutory duty. This
duty differs to that of a common law duty in that the duty does not rise by operation of common
law principles, but by statute. As such, the statute imposes a duty on the employee personally and
makes no reference to the employer. An employer can be held liable for the breach of a statutory
duty even where the statutory duty is owed by the employee personally and individually. This
circumstance would potentially arise in the context of harassment within the workplace, where one
employee has been harassed or bullied by another see the case of Majrowski v. Guy s and St
Thomas s NHS Trust. However, emphasis will be placed on the intention of the legislature in
creating the statute in deciding whether vicarious liability should be imposed.
Conclusion
Where vicarious liability is imposed on an employer, both the

Problems with the American Prison System
Throughout history into today, there have been many problems with our prison system. Prisons
are overcrowded, underfunded, rape rates are off the charts, and we as Americans have no idea
how to fix it. We need to have shorter sentences and try to rehabilitate prisoners back to where
they can function in society. Many prisoners barely have a high school education and do not
receive further education in jail. Guards need to pay more attention to the well being of the
inmates and start to notice signs of abuse and address them. These are just a few of the many
problems in our prisonsystems that need to be addressed. Overcrowding in our state and federal
jails today has become a big issue. Back in the 20th century, prison rates in the U.S... Show more

(Harris pg. 1) Many of these problems have to do with prisons mixing different groups and
expecting inmates to not fight one another.
There are many different types of people in prison. This includes race, religion, age, and
nonviolent and violent inmates. People who break the law are not all alike. They are an
enormously diverse group of human beings. says a sheriff at a prison in Illinois. Black
individuals are imprisoned nearly six times the amount of white individuals. Latinos are two
times the white rate. 13% of the U.S. population is black, 14% of the black populations are drug
users, and 37% of the black prison population are in for drug use. (Wilson pg. 1 par. 9) Prison is
full of many racists and black and white individuals are put in the same cell. Because of the
higher black population in prison, if a fight breaks out between races, the odds are always in the
black peoples favor. Also, prisons routinely put violent and nonviolent inmates together. This puts
the nonviolent inmate in danger. Lastly, age differences have become an issue. When inmates of
different ages, six years or more, are placed in the same cell, a fight is ten times more likely to
happen. (Harris pg. 2)
Inmates need to be educated and rehabilitated in order to be released back into society. If prisoners
receive a good education they are less likely to commit misconduct in the future. The Three State

Emily Dickinson Themes
Emily Dickinson was one of the greatest American poets. She wrote through the entirety of her
adult life, but she only saw less than a dozen of them published. Dickinson never knew the impact
of her poems on society. With over 2,000 poems total, no one could have predicted that Emily
Dickinson s themes would still be as pertinent today as they were in the late nineteenth century.
Themes such as death, religion, life, and loneliness are some of the most common across her
works. Of her 2,000 or more poems, about 600 are on the subject of death. The majority of
Dickinson s life was consumed by death (LaBlanc 63). Due to frequent confrontations with the
dead and dying, Dickinson began to view death as a friendly creature and often personified it. It
was not uncommon for a single poem to contain multiple themes, sometimes pairing love and
death ( Because I Could Not Stop For Death 3). As for the friendliness of death, Dickinson
comforted the living, giving advice on coping with a loss. Poems started with a death and, by the
end, had looped backed... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout her life, Emily Dickinson proclaimed and renounced her in God. She abandoned the
conventional marriage and family traditions of her day with no regrets (Bloom 60 61). This
resulted in a mix of very interesting and emotionally complex poetry. Most of Dickinson s poems
with themes of renunciation lack mature understanding, suggesting it is some of her earliest
work (Ferlazzo 43). She believed that renunciation would lead to divine happiness (Johnson 105
07). I felt a Funeral in my Brain, depending on how it is interpreted, describes a funeral for the

Central Intelligence Agency Analysis
The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has proved its worth throughout the world. The
organization was able to push past all prejudice in order to protect the people of the United States.
Today it is a very respected and sought after agency that many rely on for their safety and income.
The CIA is a powerful and organized bureau that has asserted its dominance and altered the face of
society throughout the entire world since its beginning in 1947. The United Stateshas since become
an even more authoritative and respected country worldwide thanks to this organization.
The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was a much needed addition to the U.S. government.

Originally, Bill Donovan was in control of the OSS, which was created in the early 1940s by
President Franklin Roosevelt. Roosevelt created the OSS because with World War II
approaching the U.S., he needed information on the other countries plans. Later though, after
Roosevelt died, Truman came to power and because he did not know Donovan and had received
negative reports on the OSS, he shut it down on October 1, 1945. Two years later, however,
Truman recognized the need for the organization and was willing to recreate it, just not with
Donovan and his OSS leading it (Walker, 2015). In 1947 he created the CIA in order to better
handle the challenges found in the Cold War. The changing from the OSS to the CIA left a huge
impact on America in the future. As the CIA began standing up with its own beliefs against the
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the organization was able to change America s views on
communism and the Soviet Union entirely. Due to the conflict between the FBI and the CIA, the
propaganda from the CIA overemphasized its role in the Cold War to enhance its prestige and
power to the United States (Walker,

The Payday Loan Information System
As soon as the information for the project was given to us, as a group, we took the initiative to
gather the information as soon as possible. The play we went to gather our payday loan
information was from Approved Money Center that is located on 700 S 14th Street, Suite B
Kingsville, Texas 78363. The number to Approved Money Center is (361) 592 8300 and we
spoke with Courtney Candelara, Associate, who has been working there for a year. This is her
first time working at this type of business. She is 24 years old and is form Annaville, Texas
which is located in Corpus Christi. This was all the information we could grab at the moment
because she was busy and allowed us to take a picture of the different types of loans they offered
and it contained all the information we needed.
The payday loans available include: A 14 day term payday loan. This means that the loan is
repayable after a period of 14 days. At the end of 14 days, the borrower is considered to have
default on the loan and subsequent charges come along with default. Default for less than 10 days
upon the end of the 14 days incurs charges that amount to no less than 5% of the loan. If the
default is more than 10 days, the borrower will have to pay an interest amount equivalent to $7.50.
At a bank the 14 day pay term period is also eligible to pay a fine of $30 for dishonoring the time
frame set to settle payment of automated clearing house debit. Upon of a guaranteed loan, the
collateral will be sold and the

signing the petition. When talking, her roommates mention that if you sign the petition they

that signing the petition can decrease her payment which would make it even longer to reunite with
her family. When Betsy finishes reading to Lyddie they talk about what they heard lately.
Unfortunately, Lyddie has the possibility of getting blacklisted (Paterson 81). This quote shows
that if she gets fired for signing the petition she could get blacklisted, which means that no other
mills would hire her. Being blacklisted makes it difficult to reunite back with her family. It s tough

Comparing the Intelligence of Women in Shelley s...
Intelligence of Women in Shelley s Frankenstein and Gould s Women s Brains
Throughout history, women have always aimed for a recognized place in society. Centuries ago,
people looked at the role of women in society as being sociologically inferior. Seeing the revival of
the Feminist movement, which boldly opposes the stereotypical characteristics of women in society,
on one hand, and promotes the elevation of women s status in society, on the other, one would not
find it hard to believe the drastic differences in opinion of people on this issue. What is amazing is
how these differences reflect upon scholarly works in science.
For example, in a play titled Frankenstein, based on a novel by Mary Shelley, ... Show more content

This shows that Mary Shelley must have been ahead of her time. Probably, it could also mean that
if Elizabeth had been a part of Victor s experiment of creating life, the creature would not have
turned into a destructive monster, thereby preventing the tragedy.
In contrast, Stephen Jay Gould, in Women s Brains, questions the validity of Paul Broca s study
(1824 80), a professor of clinical surgery at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris, who used unrefined
techniques to prove the lower intelligence of women as compared to men (753). Having been
convinced about the direct link between the intelligence of an individual and the size of brain,
Broca used his knowledge of craniometry, the method of skull measurement, to make a
relationship between the cranial capacity and the development of the brain. As Stephen Gould
puts it, Broca based his arguments on his data, which he collected meticulously from the
autopsies he performed in four Parisian hospitals. He found the average weight of 292 male
brains to be 1,325 grams, while 140 female brains averaged 1,144 grams, a difference of 14
percent of male brain s weight (754). Broca took this to mean that women were born biologically
inferior to men, whom nature endowed with intellectual superiority. According to Gould, this
discovery fuelled acrid misogynist remarks and sarcasms: The theologians had asked if women had
a soul ... some scientists were ready to refuse them

  • 2. Essay on Theme of Death in White Noise White Noise Death is probably the most feared word in the English language. Its undesired uncertainty threatens society s desire to believe that life never ends. Don DeLillo s novel White Noise tells the bizarre story of how Jack Gladney and his family illustrate the postmodern ideas of religion, death, and popular culture. The theme of death s influence over the character mentality, consumer lifestyle, and media manipulation is used often throughout DeLillo s story. Perhaps, the character most responsive to death is Jack Gladney. In fact, he is so consumed by his fear of death that his ordinary thought processes are often interrupted by the question: Who will die first (DeLillo 15)? In Jack s mind: This question comes up from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Duvall notes that forms of credit...are crucial to Jack s function as a consumer, and Jack stops thinking about death by thinking of it in terms of a credit card: a way to delay the payment process(136). Furthermore, Jack uses his credit to create a sense of power over his fear of death. I sent clerks into their fabric books and pattern books to search for elusive designs. I began to grow in value and self regard. I filled myself out, found new aspects of myself, located a person I d forgotten existed....The more money I spent, the less important it seemed. I was bigger than these sums (DeLillo 83 84). According to Mark Conroy, author of From Tombstone to Tabloid: Authority Figured in White Noise, this illustrates what one could call DeLillo s Law of Consumption: that people expend money in direct proportion to their fear of death or dishonor (102). Again, Jack would hide the idea of death through shopping by purchasing items that gave him a fresh, new look; a look that death would not give because death is old and bland. During the attack of the black, billowing cloud, a man holding a television with a blank screen talks about the lack of media coverage on the event. No film footage, no live report. He then, after going against everything he believes, shoots the elephant. These people practically clown this guy every single day by tripping him and making fun of him behind of his back, and yet he shoots this animal because they wanted him to. The way I looked at this situation is that the police officer in this instance wanted to fit in really bad and got pleasure in having the crowd cheer him on and he felt like he belonged so he did something that he felt was wrong. He did something he wouldn t normally do to fit in. That is how our society works in this country as well. We make people do a lot of things that are against their social norms to fit in. This is what made the poor man shoot the elephant. Even though these people mocked him and made him feel bad, he conformed to them. The problem with that is that in order to come over to this country, you have to practically conform to the culture of the U.S. in order to survive in the society we live in. When I was only a year old, the drug addiction had gotten the best of Clint and he made the decision to take his own life, leaving me and my motherheart broken. Clint s choices impacted my life in such ways that I cannot explain. Haiti is not know for much but it is known for being poor. This might dissuade people from visiting, but for me it was exactly what I needed. We got to Haiti and even in the airport saw the people desperate for money to feed themselves and their families. • 15. To What Extent Does the Mise-En-Scene in †Night of the... To what extent does the Mise en Scene in Night of the Hunter reinforce an understanding of the film s mood, character and narrative themes? The term Mise en Scene is used to signify the director s control over what happens in the film frame. In English the phrase literally translates to putting in the scene (Bordwell, 2010a). Night of the Hunter (Charles Laughton, 1955) is a prime example of a film that uses aspects of Mise en Scene to sway the audience s opinions of characters and their understanding of narrative themes and to create a certain atmosphere in the film. Although the fundamental aspects of Mise en Scene in both theatre and cinema are those of lighting, blocking and production design (costume, props and sets), ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The way the actor fluctuates between being composed and being suddenly aggressive expresses the psychotic nature of his personality. However, even when he is composed the actor still manages to give an unsettling performance. Although a lot of this is communicated through lighting techniques and non diegetic music, the actor was required to give a rather edgy performance. This performance in Night of the Hunter allows, in the narrative, the more strong minded characters such as John Harper and Rachel Cooper to see through his disingenuity. We are shown Rachel Cooper and John Harper s discomfort by their facial expressions, most prominently when Reverend Powell is giving his speeches about love and hate. The costume of Reverend Powell is also instrumental to the narrative in Night of the Hunter as the he relies upon his typical preacher outfit to fool the unsuspecting characters, the costume having obvious connotations of good morals. Similarly, makeup is employed in this film but this time to signify a progression in narrative. This is apparent when the kids are on the journey down the river, their eyes made dark with makeup. This indicates to the audience that the children have been travelling for a long time. The setting of the river is also significant in this film. • 35. Reflection Paper On Immigration In America Puebla is a city in east central Mexico, southeast of Mexico City. Puebla is known for its culinary history, architecture, pottery, and beautiful culture. However, it s plagued with extreme poverty, immigration issues, and sexual violence. I had the opportunity to visit this city twice between sophomore and senior year. Both visits shaped me in a drastic way and changed my view on many things. The most formative event that occurred during my experience in Puebla took place in an immigrationcenter. My views regarding immigration prior to visiting this center were always in a state of fluctuation. I never really knew or even cared how I stood on the idea of immigration, but once I arrived there everything changed. It was a gloomy day and we had driven a long three hours to plainly get to the center, everyone was in a somber mood and just wanted to go home. The moment I walked into the center I knew something special was about to happen to me. The atmosphere was bubbling and the people there were beautiful in their own right. After listening to presentations about immigration we were given the opportunity to explore the facility. Looking around all I saw was joy and laughter, this challenged me. How could people in such desperate situations be so joyful? The answer to this question came through an immigrant I met, MarГa. She was a gentle, humble, and quiet woman who only spoke when spoken to. After asking her a variety of questions tears were brought to my eyes. She began her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Over the Rainbow has a part where the singer talks about a far away place. Dorothy says, Somewhere over the Rainbow, Way up high, There s a land that i heard of, Once in a lullaby. This portion of the song tells about the far away place that is either mysterious or magical in a sense, this tells of a new place that a journey could be taken to get to there. The Scarecrow in the wizard of oz is lacking a brain all together and believes he cannot think for himself. The Scarecrow replies, some people without a brain sure do talk a lot. The scarecrow talking to Dorothy and saying that, is him saying you are not bright. The point of the scarecrow is to show how Dorothy believes she is not smart, how she wants everyone to think of things for her instead of her thinking things for herself. The Tin man is someone who lacks a heart, he believes he can not show any love for anyone. The wizard says, Love does not define you from the lack of a heart, love happens when you are loved by others. The purpose of having the Tin Man in the Movie is to express how Dorothy believes she does not show enough compassion / love to her family, and deeply down she feels incapable of loving them. Lastly we have the Cowardly lion, the Lion is shown to be Cowardly/ not having courage. The Lion says, I m scared!! Tell me when it s over! • 37. Diction, Symbolism, And Imagery In Robinson s Richard Cory The Grass is Always Greener on the Other Side: Diction, Symbolism and Imagery in Robinson s Richard Cory Oftentimes in poetry, something that appears simple is, in fact, very complex upon deeper evaluation. Edwin Arlington Robinson does exactly this in his poem, Richard Cory, by creating an accessible poem that can then be picked apart to reveal a deeper meaning. Upon first glance, the poem appears to be an interesting narrative about the idolization of a rich aristocrat from the perspective of a poor commoner with whom he interacts. However, upon closer evaluation, a different meaning can be discovered; the idea that desirable situations often contain negative attributes that people are unaware of or overlook. This is achieved through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, the phrase fluttering pulses could mean the townspeople being nervous in his present or could be seen as a symbol to represent romantic interests (159). Another symbol appears in the line, He was a gentleman from sole to crown (158). The word crown has two meanings in this usage (158). The most apparent definition is that it is the top of his head; however, symbolically it is a reference to a king. Thus, drawing this parallel emphasizes the status that Richard Cory holds within their community. Using the word crown also leads to many inferences on the speaker s opinion of Cory, without them actually having to be stated (158). The stereotypical image of a king is that of someone who is regal, rich, kind, fair and more, which is all indicated within that one word. A third symbol is the analogies to meat and bread in the last stanza. In this the speaker is making a statement about socioeconomic classes, but in a more eloquent way. Bread is a euphemism for being poor, because it is all that they could afford to eat. The word bread also references the Roman idea of panem et circenses, or bread and circuses. This phrase indicates the idea that as long as the poor are fed and entertained, they will remain in their impoverished state. The speaker curses the bread because that is all that he can afford to eat, but does nothing more drastic, because he is not going hungry and his situation could be much worse (159). Meanwhile, having the ability to eat meat was a sign of status, because it meant you had enough money to buy more expensive food. This comparison of bread and meat highlights the speaker s longing for the things that he does not have, the meat, without appreciating the fact that at least he can afford to eat bread. It also indicates that he is only thinking about Richard Cory in the shallowest way possible, what he can buy, rather than who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the Court of Appeal case of Mattis v. Pollock (t/a Flamingos Nightclub) a nightclub owner was held vicariously liable for the violent acts of an employed doorman. The Court of Appeal applied the rationale of Lister and held that a broad approach was required in assessing whether an individuals acts were sufficiently connected with the duties of his employment so as to justify imposing vicarious liability. Vicarious Liability under a statutory duty An employer can also be held vicariously liable for an employee s breach of a statutory duty. This duty differs to that of a common law duty in that the duty does not rise by operation of common law principles, but by statute. As such, the statute imposes a duty on the employee personally and makes no reference to the employer. An employer can be held liable for the breach of a statutory duty even where the statutory duty is owed by the employee personally and individually. This circumstance would potentially arise in the context of harassment within the workplace, where one employee has been harassed or bullied by another see the case of Majrowski v. Prisons are overcrowded, underfunded, rape rates are off the charts, and we as Americans have no idea how to fix it. Many prisoners barely have a high school education and do not receive further education in jail. They are an enormously diverse group of human beings. says a sheriff at a prison in Illinois. Black individuals are imprisoned nearly six times the amount of white individuals. Latinos are two times the white rate. 13% of the U.S. population is black, 14% of the black populations are drug users, and 37% of the black prison population are in for drug use. (Wilson pg. 1 par. 9) Prison is full of many racists and black and white individuals are put in the same cell. Because of the higher black population in prison, if a fight breaks out between races, the odds are always in the black peoples favor. Also, prisons routinely put violent and nonviolent inmates together. This puts the nonviolent inmate in danger. Lastly, age differences have become an issue. When inmates of different ages, six years or more, are placed in the same cell, a fight is ten times more likely to happen. Dickinson never knew the impact of her poems on society. With over 2,000 poems total, no one could have predicted that Emily Dickinson s themes would still be as pertinent today as they were in the late nineteenth century. Themes such as death, religion, life, and loneliness are some of the most common across her works. Of her 2,000 or more poems, about 600 are on the subject of death. The majority of Dickinson s life was consumed by death (LaBlanc 63). Due to frequent confrontations with the dead and dying, Dickinson began to view death as a friendly creature and often personified it. It was not uncommon for a single poem to contain multiple themes, sometimes pairing love and death ( Because I Could Not Stop For Death 3). In contrast, Stephen Jay Gould, in Women s Brains, questions the validity of Paul Broca s study (1824 80), a professor of clinical surgery at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris, who used unrefined techniques to prove the lower intelligence of women as compared to men (753). Having been convinced about the direct link between the intelligence of an individual and the size of brain, Broca used his knowledge of craniometry, the method of skull measurement, to make a relationship between the cranial capacity and the development of the brain. As Stephen Gould puts it, Broca based his arguments on his data, which he collected meticulously from the autopsies he performed in four Parisian hospitals. He found the average weight of 292 male brains to be 1,325 grams, while 140 female brains averaged 1,144 grams, a difference of 14 percent of male brain s weight (754).
