Guilt And Dilemmas In Tillie Olsen s I Stand Here Ironing
In her short story I Stand Here Ironing , Tillie Olsen tells the story of a mother who wrestles with guilt
and justification in the circumstances surrounding her daughter s troubles. The teacher sends a request
to meet to discuss Emily s problems in school (Olsen, 607). Word choices the educator uses in her
request shows her desperation to help Emily (Olsen, 607) however, the appeal strikes deeply rooted
wounds and worries for the mother (Olsen, 608 612).
As the nurture, a mother is concerned with all her decisions, as well as uncontrollable elements in her
child s life; and what impact it will have on the child, both long and short term. This is a burden every
mother carries, but when hardships contribute to those decisions, the worry intensifies. Often the
lesser of two evils (and prayer for the best outcome) is the only option. This seems to have been the
case for Emily s mother, beginning with her divorce and life as a single mother (Olsen, 608).
In trying to strike a balance between being the provider and the nurturer, single mothers may have to
make decisions that can affect the bond they have with their child. Emily s mother had to do this when
she sent the child to her former in laws because she could not make enough money to provide for her
(Olsen, 608). This is not only a stumbling block for the child s development, it is a heartache that can
never be extinguished for the mother, even after the child has returned (Olsen, 608). The mother will
undoubtedly wonder

Music Plays A Influence On My Life
Music plays a tremendous role in my life and always has. From the age of five, my parents introduced
to me to one particular type of music, which was gospel and it has been a part of who I am ever since.
I can remember waking up early on Sunday morning hearing gospel music from artist such as Kim
Burrell, Shirley Caesar, and Mary Mary. I began learning these particular gospel songs and then I
gained the courage to sing these songs in church. At that moment, I knew singing was a passion of
mine and music became food to my soul. I would have to say the moment in my life where I strongly
became influenced by music was as a child between the ages of five and twelve.
Then when I entered middle school, I joined the school band. I played two instruments, the trombone
and trumpet. Although I truly enjoyed playing those two instruments, I ve always dreamed of playing
the piano or violin but I never gained the opportunity to receive lessons. During the seventh grade, I
joined the Needwood Middle School Choir. We sung gospel music and Christmas music during the
holiday season. With gaining so much musical experience during my time in Middle School, my
church appointed me to Youth Choir Director for Salem St. John Baptist Church.
Overall, I prefer Gospel music for so many different reasons. One of the reasons I prefer to listen to
Gospel music is because of the messages behind this type of music. God comes first and he truly is the
head of my life. As a Christian, by me listening to

In the beginning when darkness ruled the universe hideous daemons reined the planet for several
millennia till the light caused the daemons to vanish, which lead to believe they were destroyed. The
daemons waited for the day of Armageddon, when they would once again reign over the four corners

Third Person Omniscient Point Of View Analysis
Third person omniscient point of view is an old literary technique that is used to to help the readers
understand the characters. There are details that the readers might know but the characters won t know
about each other. Sandra moved from one character to another character and it made the story easy to
understand. A story with so many characters can get confusing and boring but Sandra didn t let her
readers feel that way. The story was interesting to read because of the techniques that Sandra used in
her work. Authors choose the third person omniscient point of view to present their story because this
way their audience is able to picture everything and know everything about the characters. The

The Role of Animals in the Unbearable Lightness of Being...
Since animals, usually pets, are sometimes an essential part of one s life, it is not surprising that we
find frequent references to its role in works of social realism, such as Wislawa Szymborska s Poems
New and Collected and Milan Kundera s Unbearable Lightness of Being. Animals in literature could
be used to symbolize all sorts of things, but in particular, animals may represent the personality of a
character. This is because as humans and animals co exist in the same atmosphere, certain aspects of a
character reveal themselves in the compassion or even hatred towards the animal. Since animals are
often known to trigger the interests of humans, the attitude of the humans towards the animals
contributes much to character revelation. Both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A life that never ends?
He d turn his ruddy rump as if to say
Such life he neither bans nor recommends
We can see the monkey as a god now, a figure that even has power to give life that never ends, such a
contrast after the total mistreatment, above. We see how the animals determine human characteristics:
either overly mistreating, or overly obsessed.
In the poem, Cat in an empty apartment, Szymborska again criticizes the uncaring characteristic of
humans and the role of animals in the poem as a mere irritation or a vexation.
Die – you can t do that to a cat
Since what can a cat do in an empty apartment?
Climb the walls?
Rub against the furniture?
From this we can perceive that animals in Szymborska s poems serve to prove that in their co
existence with humans, they are treated unfairly and the human characteristics of cruel superiority
over animals are evident in the works.
Later in the Unbearable Lightness of Being, Tomas and Tereza moves to a collective farm in Rural
Czechoslovakia after the Soviet takeover of 1969 to avoid the hardships caused by Tomas criticism of
the former Czechoslovak communist regime. There, they befriend the chairman of the collective farm,
who like Tereza, shares a close relationship with an animal companion: a pig named Mephisto, which
has been raised like a dog. Even though in the farms animals are purposely raised to be slaughtered for
eating use, Mephisto is treated like his best friend, even going so far as to imagine

Mussolini Rise to Power
Mussolini
Benito Mussolini appears to stride through 20th century Italian history like a buffoon, a fascist dictator
whose ludicrous posing was dwarfed by the incalculably more sinister nature of Adolf Hitler s Nazi
regime.
Young socialist
Mussolini was born in 1883. As a young man, he was a rousing orator, a tireless journalist and a
socialist. In 1912, after years of hack journalism and self promotion, he was appointed editor of the
Socialist Party newspaper Avanti!, preaching left wing revolution.
But, when the First World War broke out, and Mussolini called for Italy to ally itself with France, he
was expelled from the party, whose policy was neutrality. When Italy joined the war, Mussolini fought
in the army, then after peace in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There was no systematic discrimination against Jews; and political opponents were imprisoned or
exiled to remote regions of Italy rather than thrown into concentration camps.
Fatal attraction
In 1933, Hitler came to power in Germany. Although Mussolini was the senior Fascist, he soon
recognised Hitler as the dominant figure on the European stage. Reversing his earlier policies, and
despite the fact that he had once had a Jewish mistress, Mussolini introduced anti Semitic legislation.
In 1935, Mussolini tried to demonstrate Italy s power by invading Abyssinia (now Ethiopia). The
following year, Italy joined Germany in providing military support to General Franco s Nationalists in
the Spanish Civil War, while Hitler supported Mussolini s fantasies about a new Italian empire. In
1940, Italy entered the Second World War on Germany s side.
Mismanaged, ill equipped and worn down by years of fighting in Abyssinia and Spain, Italian forces
were routed in Greece and got bogged down in North Africa. In the spring of 1943, they were driven
out of Africa; on 10 July, Allied forces landed in Sicily. Soon after, Mussolini was deposed by the
Fascist Grand Council and the king. In September, Italy signed an armistice with the Allies, and
Mussolini was arrested and held in a remote hotel in the Apennines.
But Hitler couldn t let Italy fall without a fight: the Germans invaded the country, Mussolini was

The Importance Of Technology On Social Communication
Technology has had a massive influence on earth, and social communicating, notably since newest
advances in technology have now been demonstrated. It s led in forming the way that individuals
communicate with each other. It s a debatable issue on perhaps the advances in tech has shifted
interpersonal communication for the better or, the worse. It s caused changes to the world that
empowers us to complete things time economically and efficiently. The more heightened technology
has become its enabled information to travel faster, it features an enormous effect on the current
generation, particularly with the latest obsession that people have with social networking.
Social media permits visitors to contact people they know, people they don t understand, and even the
others that they won t expect you ll socialize with again. Before progress in technology was detected,
everyone was confined by interacting face to face because there wasn t any other approach to where as
today with all the advancement as well as the growth of technology, it enables individuals to socialize
with individuals all around the entire world to some far more significant crowd.
Social media has most influenced the character of social communication, that is a result of how it s
altered the way that individuals socialize, and it has generated a reduction in interpersonal abilities.

Jim Davis Research Paper
Garfield, is an American comic character created by Jim Davis in 1978. It tells the story of a cat
named Garfield, his owner Jon and their dog named Odie. I all started in 1970 when the comic artist
Jim Davis decided to take a troll of the comic books in order to introduce a new, interesting and
relatable character and he realized that dogs were doing great but there were no cats at that time. Davis
figured that as he grew up on a farm with 25 cats, he could come up with a strip based on cats. He then
continued to create a strip with a cat as its main character and thus created Garfield. At first, Garfield
consisted of four main characters. Davis was inspired from his grandfather for Garfield s name and
personality; who Davis described as a large cantankerous man . Jon Arbuckel was inspired from a
1950 s coffee commercial, Odie the dog was based a car dealer commercial Davis wrote and Odie s
owner who was created for Jon to have someone to talk to. The strip was originally centered on Jon as

Marx s Term For Capitalist
Bourgeoisie: Page 10; Marx s term for capitalist, those who own the means of production.
The food production companies have accentually bought the government. If they come up with a plan
to produce more food, no matter how harmful it may be to the consumer, the government will not step
in to protect the citizen of Americans. As the bourgeoisie owns the industry, this fact has been proven
within the video of Food Inc. What is astonishing is that a company was actually able to get a patent
on life. How can a company be allowed to monopolize an entire industry? That is depriving people of
their basic human right of life, to eat healthy food, food that has not been modified by harmful
hormones or genetics. Several of the food production companies give jobs to illegal immigrants and
once their services are no longer needed, then the heads of these companies call immigration to have
them arrested and deported back to their home country. This in turn saves the company money
because they do not have to pay out anything for unemployment wages for laying the employees off
for a period of time. The food industry has really become the bourgeoisie of this century.
Proletariat: Page 10: Marx s term for the exploited class, the mass of workers who do not have the

They would find gas station with a cheaper price. If the station lowered the amount of gasoline by
10% or 15%, there would be a line wrapped around the corner of that gas station. People would go out
of their way to buy cheap gas.
Total receipts and total revenue are determined by multiplying the price of the gas by the quantity
sold. If the demand for a product is elastic, the amount consumer s buy will go up and the price will be
lowered, but if inelastic, a lower price would mean a small increase in the quantity demanded. It
would not be enough if sales increased.
Substitutes and Compliments
Gas cannot be substituted. For food, which is a good, can be substituted. If the price of fish and butter
go up, buyers can switch to chicken and margarine. Small changes in the price of a product will cause
people to switch from one product to the other. When quantity like this sells in a particular store or
small store, the quantity changes drastically by the impact of store receipts, which tends to make the
demand elastic. The more changes in substitutes the more elastic it becomes, the less substitutes for
that particular product, the more inelastic the demand becomes.

The Impact Of Modern Technology
We are living in an era where technology is evolving at an exponential rate. Not long ago, when in
need of driving directions, we pulled out a large folded street map from our vehicle s glove
compartment. Nowadays, we tap a few times on our smartphone or just ask Siri for directions. Better
yet, rather than visiting the local discount mart to replace our laundry detergent, we tell Alexa to
reorder it and have it shipped directly to our door. Throughout the day, we use technology to routinely
accomplish specific tasks or obtain information.
Even the simplest human actions performed for centuries, such as reading, have been made easier with
technology. It s quite possible you are reading this very essay on a piece of light emitting technology,
rather than on paper printed with ink. Modern Technology has unbelievably improved human
capabilities beyond what we ever imagined 20 or 30 years ago. It is very apparent that Technology has
made human life better, by improving communications with each other, and healthier by improving
the diagnosis and treatment of illness.
Today, modern cellular and satellite communication networks continually broadcast voice and data
around the globe in milliseconds to our little handheld devices and computers. This data includes
everything from our favorite TV show to billions of dollars in electronic trades on the financial stock
markets. All these modern communication technology tools have simplified the way humans and

Gothic Sculpture And Gothic Art
The Gothic Sculpture had not been only a design of art but an exceptionally influential period
formulated with its own intricate history. The word is utilized to spell it out buildings and items whose
varieties are based after a variety of characteristics from the 12th to the end of the 15th century. Gothic
style was a development of the Romanesque yet it was Renaissance humanists who first used it as a
disparaging term to spell it out what they noticed as the barbaric structures. With Gothic sculpture
being seen through a wide variety of perspectives it is regarded as very difficult to appropriately

The Romanesque period was an age group of new and experimental structures. One advancement in
construction was the shift to all stone structure that replaced the timber ceilings that caused many

The directed arch was their first technology that removed the uncomfortable look of disproportional
arches at the attributes of the Romanesque cathedrals. The directed arch also aimed the weight of the
vault downward to help support the substantial ceilings. The next advancement of the Gothic
architects solved problems of the Romanesque period. The Romanesque cathedrals possessed thick
surfaces that gave the sensation of confinement, and their substantial arches seemed unwell

Successful Aging Through Participatory Arts Programming...
80 is the new 40:
Successful Aging through Participatory Arts Programming for Older Adults
The United States is in the midst of a major demographic shift. People are living longer which means
that the population of older adults, those sixty years and over, is growing. It is projected that by the
year 2040, older adults will far outnumber school age children. Older adults are currently healthier and
lead more productive lives than ever before, due in part to modern medicine and the new idea of
seeing older people for their potential rather than their problems. This has prompted the concept of
creative aging or successful aging. This positive view of aging is not new, only the terminology.
Cicero, the Roman philosopher, is perhaps the first to introduce the idea of good aging in his essay, On
Old Age which was penned in the year 44 BC. He wrote this essay in his early 60 s to show that old
age is not a phase of decline and loss, and if approached properly becomes a time for positive change
and productive functioning (Baltes Baltes, 1990). Over the last few decades the subject of successful
aging has been the topic of a number of scholarly articles and books and has recently been tied to
participatory arts and humanities programming through agencies that provide services to the older
adult demographic. As public libraries struggle to remain relevant in today s society and respond to the
changing needs of older adult patrons it is important to become more

The Four Key Components Of The SARA Model
1. Process of conflict resolution for supervisors Conflict resolution is a process bringing about
constructive change between or within the parties in conflict. The process usually involves four major
steps. The first step is to establish the cause of the conflict. This involves gathering as many
information as possible about the cause of the conflict, which will assist in finding the solution to the
conflict. The more information collected, the easier the conflict can be resolved. The next step is to
think outside the box in regard to the problem or to look beyond the incident. This involves
establishing the origin of the conflict, it could be a small issue that happened years before, but the
stress level has developed to the point where the parties involved have begun to attack one another
individually rather than dealing with the real issue. The third step request solutions from the parties
involved in the conflict. This is done by asking each of the parties to suggest how the situation can be
changed, then identifying the most suitable course of action. The last step is to let the parties to agree

Grauballe Man Poem Meaning
The Grauballe Man, is a bog body that has been preserved for more than two thousand years, is one of
Seamus Heaney s North collection poems. Historically, the Grauballe Man is considered to be one of
the most well preserved body of all time. It was discovered in the peat bogs in Jutland, Denmark. The
body showed signs of violence indicating that the man was murdered rather than dying of natural
causes. Heaney s poem indicates his preoccupation with the body because it evokes him of the
atrocities that has happened during The Trouble. Heaney utilizes imagery to describe the bog body,
utilizes metaphor to associate bog body and the victims of Northern Ireland, and utilizes allusion to
make historical references. Heaney explains the cause ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He connects the Grauballe Man with a famous sculpture in order to connect one thing with another.
Heaney states that, hung in the scales with beauty and atrocity: with the Dying Gaul too strictly
compassed. Dying Gaul is a Hellenistic sculpture that realistically depicts the pain and suffering
experienced by a dying man, the root of the reference is that the pose of the sculpture reminiscences
the death position of the bog man. Heaney uses the allusion of Dying Gaul in order to make the reader
develop the idea of the unification of artifice and nature, which reveals the unique characteristics of
human beings. Additionally, the Grauballe Man itself, is also an allusion. The allusion of the Grauballe
Man exemplifies the brutal history that has happened in the North. The Grauballe Man personifies the
sacrifices for religious excursions in Northern Ireland during The Troubles. Furthermore, the cured
wound opens inward to a dark elderberry place exemplifies that the open wound will forever be
exposed to the brutality and the violence that is happening in Northern Ireland. However, it is very
ironic because the wounds of the bog body can never be cured because the body cannot develop or
heal itself

Weekly Article On Photosynthesis
Weekly Summary on Photosynthesis
Structure of the Chloroplast: Leafs contain chlorophyll and are the sites of photosynthesis in plants.
Their flattened surfaces gather energy from sunlight while openings on their undersides bring in
carbon dioxide and release oxygen. The cells of a leaf are pack in between two layers of epidermal
cells, which provide the leaf with a waxy, almost impermeable cuticle that defends against water loss.
The only way for gases to diffuse in and out of the leaf is through small openings on the underside of
the leaf, the stomata then open and close according to the plant s needs. The tissues of the leaf in
between the epidermal cells, in which gases diffuse from the stomata, are called mesophyll.

The electron acceptor of the light reactions, NADP+, is a relation to NAD , which functions as an
electron carrier in cellular respiration. The two molecules differ only by the presence of an extra
phosphate group in the NADP+ molecule. Light reactions use solar power to reduce NADP+ to
NADPH by adding a pair of electrons along with a hydrogen nucleus. The light reactions then
generate ATP by powering the addition of a phosphate group to ADP, a process called
photophosphorylation. Therefore, light energy is converted to chemical energy in the form of two
compounds which are NADPH, a source of energized electrons, and ATP, the useful energy currency
of the light reactions produce no sugar which occurs in the second stage of photosynthesis, which is
called the Calvin cycle.
Describing the 3 stages of Calvin cycle:
A) Fixation stage: In addition to CO2, the stroma and two other mechanisms are present to start the
light independent reactions; an enzyme called ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase and three molecules
of ribulose bisphosphate. RuBP has five atoms of carbon, bordered by two phosphates. RuBisCO
catalyzes a reaction between CO2 and RuBP. For each CO2 molecule that reacts with one RuBP, two
molecules of 3 phosphoglyceric acid form. The number of carbon atoms remains the same, as the
atoms move to form new bonds during the reactions. This process is called carbon fixation because
CO2 is fixed from an inorganic form into organic

Guns Germs And Steel Discussion Questions
1. Yali s question is Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo and brought it to New
Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own? In a broader sense, why did some things
progress in some areas, but not in others?
2. The first consideration Diamond discusses is that just because something happened and that it
would have happened anyway, it does not make the act good or just. The second consideration is that
the most powerful region, in this case, western Europe, should not be the only one talked about
because ideas and practices that are now or were at that time integrated into their culture were not
necessarily developed by them, but by other culture that imported their beliefs into European culture.

This led to a growth in population because now there was no restriction on how often you could have
children, just how many you can care for. This led to a greater population density which ultimately
started civilizations.
8. One factor that contributed to the transition from hunting gathering to farming was the decline in
the availability of wild foods to gather. A second factor was an increased availability of wild plants. A
third factor was the development of technologies that food production would later depend upon. A
fourth factor was the link between the rise in population density and the rise in food production. A
fifth factor was food producers could force hunter gatherers to leave or kill them off because of the
great numbers they had.
9. One advantage the Fertile Crescent had in food production was that it had a Mediterranean climate
that was mild and wet in the winter and hot and dry in the long summers. This allows plants to grow
quickly after the dry season when the rain comes back. A second advantage was many plants there
were already very abundant and very productive. A third advantage was that it had a lot of
hermaphrodite plants that would almost always pollinate themselves and occasionally cross pollinate
which allowed a little more variety. A fourth advantage was that the area had different levels of
elevation which allowed a variety of plants to grow in a small

Types Of Sleep, Rapid Eye Movement ( Nrem )
College students are among the most sleep deprived people in the country. According to a 2001 study,
only 11% of college students have good sleep quality and 73% have occasional sleep problems
(Brown, 2014). Many college students misjudge the need for a good night s sleep. There are many
factors that contribute to a pattern of poor sleeping habits such as, stresses of classes and jobs, being
independent and living on your own for the first time, and being surrounded by a very active social
scene that can be found on almost all campuses. Most people need to sleep eight hours each night, this
being especially true for college students. There are two types of sleep, rapid eye movement (REM)
and non rapid eye movement (NREM). NREM sleep is divided into four stages, stages three and four
are referred to slow wave sleep. REM is a very active type of sleep where the brain is almost as active
as if it was awake. Deep sleep is essential for restoring energy and allowing the body to undergo
maintenance. When in NREM wounds are healed, white blood cells are created to aid your body s
defenses, muscles are restored, and the growth hormone is released. Without enough deep sleep, all of
these processes will be lacking (Rama, Cho, Kushida 2005). NREM sleep accounts for 75 80% of
sleep time. Stage one makes up 3 8 % of sleep time and mostly occurs in transition from alertness to
the other stages of sleep. Stage two begins approximately 10 12 minutes of stage one and
compromises 45 55%

Mass Media Communication
Definition
Mass media is a media intended for a large audience. It may take the form of broadcast media, as in
the case of television and radio, or print media, like newspapers and magazines. Internet media can
also attain mass media status, and many media outlets maintain a web presence to take advantage of
the ready availability of Internet in many regions of the world. Some people also refer to it as the
mainstream media, referencing the fact that it tends to stick to prominent stories which will be of
interest to a general audience, sometimes ignoring controversial breaking news. Many people around
the world rely on this form of media for news and entertainment, and globally, it is a huge industry.

Negative effects of Mass Media for teenagers, The exposure of sex images and excessive portraits of
violence in movies and dramas have instilled negative thoughts and taboos in the mind of these
teenagers for they have been consistently getting increased exposure to things which are not suitable
for their age. Thousands of advertisements on junk food, fast food, soft drink, etc are shown on TV
and heard over radio have indirectly lead to the grown of obesity and anorexia in teenagers. This is
one of the critical global problem of today which is threatening our next generations for being
unhealthy and being exposed to many serious diseases and sicknesses such as diabetes, high blood
pressure, heart problem and anorexia.
Women are obsessive with losing weight even if they are not being fat or obese. This is due to the
influence of the media in portraying that successful women are always thin. Many teenagers,
especially girls were greatly influenced with the slim figure of their favorite celebrity. As a results,
some of these teenage fans were so deep into the dieting and slimming concerns which lead them to
severe health issues and fatal death in serious situation.

Internal Motivation In The Diary Of Anne Frank
The Holocaust is a big part of WWII. The Holocaust is a genocide, meaning killing a large group of
people. Many people went into hiding such as Anne Frank. In the play, The Diary of Anne Frank, by
Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, Anne and her family went into hiding to prevent being
deported. Dialogue is shown in Anne Frank by showing things like internal motivation, external
motivation, conflict, setting the temporarily state of action, and what the characters are drawing the
same characteristics to. In fact, dialogue is known to be noticed in its different categories such as
internal motivation. According to the text, Anne is longing for friends and people. She wants someone
young and understanding to talk to (Goodrich and Hackett p.167). Anne feels lonely in the Annex,
which causes Anne to want a friend her age to talk to her and understand. This is portraying the
emotion loneliness. This is a way of expressing how internal motivation is being used. Furthermore,
this shows that internal motivation can be used in dialogue in the play. In the Diary of Anne Frank,
this is a way of portraying dialogue being used. According to the text, Margot says of course I m
jealous...jealous that you ve got something to get up in the morning for... (Goodrich and Hackett
p170). To have internal motivation means to to have emotions. To explain, Margot is jealous of Anne
having something to look forward to something when Anne is awake. In this case, the emotion is

Nelson Mandela: Man with a Motivation A man of true influence was born on July 18, 1918 in
Mvezo, South Africa and was born into the royal Mandela name. His father was the sub chief to the
king of the Thembu, and the influential man s name was Nelson Mandela, which would be a name that
would resonate throughout the world. Life for Mandela was hard at times, but through the difficulties
came a striving motivation to make his life and the lives of others better. Due to Nelson Mandela s
imprisonments, politics, and apartheid involvement, a strong motivation and lasting legacy of leading
by example was brought forth. For twenty seven years, prison was home for Nelson Mandela. After
the white supremacist party won South Africa s election in 1948, a constitution was formed that was
known to be racist towards black. That brought uprising which Mandela was a part of, since he was a

Fears And Application Of Skepticism Towards Witchcraft Essay
The Heightening and Application of Skepticism towards Witchcraft
Throughout the period ranging from the late 16th to early 18th century, the witchcraft mania and trials
dominated the religious, secular, and popular spheres of life. Within the mainstream popular beliefs in
magic and the prosecution of such acts, there existed the few, but strong voices of skepticism. These
skeptical works did stir up these popular beliefs; however, these opposing views did not generate
much change. Where these views are able to clear a path towards to the decline and eradication of
witchcraft trials is ultimately within the application of these views. While the authors and speakers
from the skeptical texts written in the late 16th to early 18th century were interested in combating and
reformulating the popular beliefs in witchcraft and its many faces, the major manifestation of their
skepticism results in a critique of the process of witchcraft trials, their legal methodology, and their
validity in a moral and reasonable society.
Many of the skeptics within the time in and surrounding the 17th century were concerned, as many
early writers had been, with the reality of magic as a whole. Living within the uprising of witchcraft
trials and beliefs in 1584, Reginald Scot appeared as an unaided voice of skepticism against a sea of
passionate belief. In his text, Discoverie of Witchcraft, Scot outlines the crimes witches are often
committed for, but omits the crimes of magical sorts. He sites

How Does Levi Characterize Nietzsche s Sickness
In Primo Levi s The Drowned And The Saved, his analysis of the Holocaust had conclusions and
assumptions that resonated with the philosophy of Nietzsche. More precisely, points made by Levi can
be drawn back to Nietzsche s sickness , slave morality and the role of the ascetic priest. Although Levi
is thorough to acknowledge the ideas of Nietzsche in his writing, he fails to fully grasp how
Nietzschean philosophy could view these events.
First, I would like to identify the parallels to Nietzsche s sickness . In chapter 5, Useless Violence ,
Levi concludes that the inhuman Nazi hierarchy spread its inhumanity from the top to all aspects of its
regime (Levi pg 112). Along these lines he acknowledges that this inhumanity spreads downwards ...

However, in the case of the Third Reich, Hitler gave his followers the Jewish as a scapegoat to their
problems. To Nietzschean philosophy Hitler is equivalent to the ascetic priest who redirects the public
s ressentiment to the Jewish. It s important to note that ressentiment also built in the Lagers but
through the systemized degradation employed by the Hitler, it was redirected amongst the prisoners.
Nietzsche would see this in the Kapos and SS men, as they redirected the prisoners ressentiment onto
other prisoners due to prisoner on prisoner abuse. Furthermore, the self deceptive aspect of slave
morality can be seen in Levi s work. When Levi comments on the interrogations of Nazis after the
war, he examines the justifications made by the accused (Levi pg 27). This asserts that the accused
relied on self deception as a way to see their acts as just. This parallels to the self deception in slave
morality as the weak see themselves as strong by adjusting their realities just as the Nazis. Lastly, Levi
remarks rather negatively of Nietzsche. He notes that Nietzsche s philosophy led to his morals
becoming removed from the morality common to all time causing him to lose touch with reality (Levi
pg 106, 107). He also reflects on the fact that Nietzsche never desired the suffering of the

How Is Curley Presented In Of Mice And Men
How far can pettiness push a person? In Of Mice and Men, Curley is early on discovered to be one of
the main antagonist of the story because of his hostile attitude. Curley is simply a bad egg who forever
changes the other characters lives, maybe even for the worst. John Steinbeck includes the antagonistic
character of Curley to serve as a classic bully who shows the petty side of society. Steinbeck uses both
direct and indirect characterization to show that Curley is a combative type of person. Curley parades
his combative nature when he readily pulverizes sweet Lenny. Curley slashed at Lenny with his left,
and then same down on his nose with a right. Lenny gave a cry of terror. (Steinbeck 63). This
establishes that Curley loves to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being petty means to take something small and letting it blow out of proportion. This is best displayed
when Crooks mentions Curley s bias hatred for big guys. The swamper considered.... Well...tell you

Kind of like he s mad at them because he ain t a big guy. You seen little guys like that, ain t you?
Always scrappy? (Steinbeck 26). Curley is taking something so trivial as height, and letting it control
his feelings. Another example of Curley s pettiness is his reaction to when his wife died. Slim nodded.
We might, he said. If we could keep Curley in, we might. But Curley s gonna want to shoot him.
Curley is still mad about his hand. An s pose they lock him up an strap him down and put him in a
cage. That ain t no good, George. (Steinbeck 97). Slim clearly says that Curley wants to kill Lenny for
revenge about his hand. You would think that Curley would be motivated by the murder of his wife to
kill Lenny, but to the contrary, he is largely motivated by his bruised ego from the broken hand
incident. Curley is so petty that he is willing to take a man s life over an insignificant

Difference Between Reasonable Suspicion And Reasonable Doubt
The issue within this paper focuses on the difference between reasonable suspicion and probable
doubt. The two appear similar in many ways as both require the best judgment of the law enforcement
personnel. But they are in fact different, and all law enforcement must know the difference in order for
the evidence to be admissible in court. Law enforcement is obligated to follow the protocols and
procedures outlined by the U.S. Supreme Court; if law enforcement does not follow the laws,
perpetrators could be released and free to commit more crimes. Proving probable cause and reasonable
suspicion are imperative to avoid violating the rights of citizens.
The police need only reasonable suspicion to stop an individual and question him or her, and they may
search for weapons if they believe that the person is armed or presents an imminent threat of bodily
harm (Taylor, 2012). Reasonable suspicion is when a law enforcement personnel presumes a crime has
been or is about to be committed. For instance, a police officer observes a vehicle driving unusually
faster than the others on the road, therefore performing a speed check using radar. The car is, in fact,
speeding so the officer pursues the vehicle and pulls them over. Upon approaching the vehicle, the
officer notices the suspect scrambling and whispering while leaning around the car. This causes
suspicion, reasonable suspicion, which allows the officer to ask the person out of the vehicle to detain
them. It also gives the

Sensory Perceptual Phenomena Is An Event A Living Organism
Sensory Perceptual Phenomena is an event a living organism experiences that involves biological,
psychological, and cognitive determinants as a response to the environment (Gorbel, Oct. 28th). In
order for the living organism to experience this phenomena, the brain and nervous system must
organize and stabilize the living organism s sensory perceptual system (Gorbel, Nov. 16th) A primary
function of the sense are biological transducers, devices that convert one kind of energy into another
(Coon Mitterer, 124). The basic process that occurs in the sensory perceptual system begins with a
physical energy from the living organism s environment. Then the phylogenetically engineered
external organ is used in order to collect the energy from the environment. Receptor cells are then
stimulated and create electro chemical reactions. Electrical impulses are encoded with information and
travel the neural net. It will then be sent to a specific structure of the brain that correlates with the
external organ. The information is decoded and the living organism becomes aware; this causes a
physical stimulus response, also known as a sensation (Gorbel, Oct, 28th).
However, there are other processes that are involved before the living organism produces a perception
from a physical sensation. Other sensory organs and systems include: the eye and visual system, ears
and auditory system, the nose and olfaction, taste buds or tongue and gustation, somesthetic sense and
warning and reminding

  • 2. Guilt And Dilemmas In Tillie Olsen s I Stand Here Ironing In her short story I Stand Here Ironing , Tillie Olsen tells the story of a mother who wrestles with guilt and justification in the circumstances surrounding her daughter s troubles. The teacher sends a request to meet to discuss Emily s problems in school (Olsen, 607). Word choices the educator uses in her request shows her desperation to help Emily (Olsen, 607) however, the appeal strikes deeply rooted wounds and worries for the mother (Olsen, 608 612). As the nurture, a mother is concerned with all her decisions, as well as uncontrollable elements in her child s life; and what impact it will have on the child, both long and short term. This is a burden every mother carries, but when hardships contribute to those decisions, the worry intensifies. Often the lesser of two evils (and prayer for the best outcome) is the only option. This seems to have been the case for Emily s mother, beginning with her divorce and life as a single mother (Olsen, 608). In trying to strike a balance between being the provider and the nurturer, single mothers may have to make decisions that can affect the bond they have with their child. Emily s mother had to do this when she sent the child to her former in laws because she could not make enough money to provide for her (Olsen, 608). This is not only a stumbling block for the child s development, it is a heartache that can never be extinguished for the mother, even after the child has returned (Olsen, 608). The mother will undoubtedly wonder ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Music Plays A Influence On My Life Music plays a tremendous role in my life and always has. From the age of five, my parents introduced to me to one particular type of music, which was gospel and it has been a part of who I am ever since. I can remember waking up early on Sunday morning hearing gospel music from artist such as Kim Burrell, Shirley Caesar, and Mary Mary. I began learning these particular gospel songs and then I gained the courage to sing these songs in church. At that moment, I knew singing was a passion of mine and music became food to my soul. I would have to say the moment in my life where I strongly became influenced by music was as a child between the ages of five and twelve. Then when I entered middle school, I joined the school band. I played two instruments, the trombone and trumpet. Although I truly enjoyed playing those two instruments, I ve always dreamed of playing the piano or violin but I never gained the opportunity to receive lessons. During the seventh grade, I joined the Needwood Middle School Choir. We sung gospel music and Christmas music during the holiday season. With gaining so much musical experience during my time in Middle School, my church appointed me to Youth Choir Director for Salem St. John Baptist Church. Overall, I prefer Gospel music for so many different reasons. One of the reasons I prefer to listen to Gospel music is because of the messages behind this type of music. God comes first and he truly is the head of my life. As a Christian, by me listening to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Role of Animals in the Unbearable Lightness of Being... Since animals, usually pets, are sometimes an essential part of one s life, it is not surprising that we find frequent references to its role in works of social realism, such as Wislawa Szymborska s Poems New and Collected and Milan Kundera s Unbearable Lightness of Being. Animals in literature could be used to symbolize all sorts of things, but in particular, animals may represent the personality of a character. This is because as humans and animals co exist in the same atmosphere, certain aspects of a character reveal themselves in the compassion or even hatred towards the animal. Since animals are often known to trigger the interests of humans, the attitude of the humans towards the animals contributes much to character revelation. Both ... He d turn his ruddy rump as if to say Such life he neither bans nor recommends We can see the monkey as a god now, a figure that even has power to give life that never ends, such a contrast after the total mistreatment, above. We see how the animals determine human characteristics: either overly mistreating, or overly obsessed. In the poem, Cat in an empty apartment, Szymborska again criticizes the uncaring characteristic of humans and the role of animals in the poem as a mere irritation or a vexation. Die – you can t do that to a cat Since what can a cat do in an empty apartment? Climb the walls? Rub against the furniture? From this we can perceive that animals in Szymborska s poems serve to prove that in their co existence with humans, they are treated unfairly and the human characteristics of cruel superiority over animals are evident in the works. Later in the Unbearable Lightness of Being, Tomas and Tereza moves to a collective farm in Rural Czechoslovakia after the Soviet takeover of 1969 to avoid the hardships caused by Tomas criticism of the former Czechoslovak communist regime. There, they befriend the chairman of the collective farm, who like Tereza, shares a close relationship with an animal companion: a pig named Mephisto, which has been raised like a dog. Mussolini Rise to Power Mussolini Benito Mussolini appears to stride through 20th century Italian history like a buffoon, a fascist dictator whose ludicrous posing was dwarfed by the incalculably more sinister nature of Adolf Hitler s Nazi regime. Young socialist Mussolini was born in 1883. As a young man, he was a rousing orator, a tireless journalist and a socialist. In 1912, after years of hack journalism and self promotion, he was appointed editor of the Socialist Party newspaper Avanti!, preaching left wing revolution. There was no systematic discrimination against Jews; and political opponents were imprisoned or exiled to remote regions of Italy rather than thrown into concentration camps. Fatal attraction In 1933, Hitler came to power in Germany. Although Mussolini was the senior Fascist, he soon recognised Hitler as the dominant figure on the European stage. Reversing his earlier policies, and despite the fact that he had once had a Jewish mistress, Mussolini introduced anti Semitic legislation. In 1935, Mussolini tried to demonstrate Italy s power by invading Abyssinia (now Ethiopia). The following year, Italy joined Germany in providing military support to General Franco s Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War, while Hitler supported Mussolini s fantasies about a new Italian empire. In 1940, Italy entered the Second World War on Germany s side. Mismanaged, ill equipped and worn down by years of fighting in Abyssinia and Spain, Italian forces were routed in Greece and got bogged down in North Africa. In the spring of 1943, they were driven out of Africa; on 10 July, Allied forces landed in Sicily. Soon after, Mussolini was deposed by the Fascist Grand Council and the king. I all started in 1970 when the comic artist Jim Davis decided to take a troll of the comic books in order to introduce a new, interesting and relatable character and he realized that dogs were doing great but there were no cats at that time. Davis figured that as he grew up on a farm with 25 cats, he could come up with a strip based on cats. He then continued to create a strip with a cat as its main character and thus created Garfield. At first, Garfield consisted of four main characters. Davis was inspired from his grandfather for Garfield s name and personality; who Davis described as a large cantankerous man . If they come up with a plan to produce more food, no matter how harmful it may be to the consumer, the government will not step in to protect the citizen of Americans. As the bourgeoisie owns the industry, this fact has been proven within the video of Food Inc. What is astonishing is that a company was actually able to get a patent on life. How can a company be allowed to monopolize an entire industry? That is depriving people of their basic human right of life, to eat healthy food, food that has not been modified by harmful hormones or genetics. Several of the food production companies give jobs to illegal immigrants and once their services are no longer needed, then the heads of these companies call immigration to have them arrested and deported back to their home country. This in turn saves the company money because they do not have to pay out anything for unemployment wages for laying the employees off for a period of time. The food industry has really become the bourgeoisie of this century. Proletariat: Page 10: Marx s term for the exploited class, the mass of workers who do not have the means of production. Not long ago, when in need of driving directions, we pulled out a large folded street map from our vehicle s glove compartment. Nowadays, we tap a few times on our smartphone or just ask Siri for directions. Better yet, rather than visiting the local discount mart to replace our laundry detergent, we tell Alexa to reorder it and have it shipped directly to our door. Throughout the day, we use technology to routinely accomplish specific tasks or obtain information. Even the simplest human actions performed for centuries, such as reading, have been made easier with technology. It s quite possible you are reading this very essay on a piece of light emitting technology, rather than on paper printed with ink. Modern Technology has unbelievably improved human capabilities beyond what we ever imagined 20 or 30 years ago. It is very apparent that Technology has made human life better, by improving communications with each other, and healthier by improving the diagnosis and treatment of illness. Today, modern cellular and satellite communication networks continually broadcast voice and data around the globe in milliseconds to our little handheld devices and computers. The stone vaulting allow architects build on a more substantial scale than before. The Gothic style surfaced out of architectural design of the Romanesque cathedrals. • 19. Successful Aging Through Participatory Arts Programming... 80 is the new 40: Successful Aging through Participatory Arts Programming for Older Adults The United States is in the midst of a major demographic shift. People are living longer which means that the population of older adults, those sixty years and over, is growing. It is projected that by the year 2040, older adults will far outnumber school age children. Older adults are currently healthier and lead more productive lives than ever before, due in part to modern medicine and the new idea of seeing older people for their potential rather than their problems. This has prompted the concept of creative aging or successful aging. This positive view of aging is not new, only the terminology. Cicero, the Roman philosopher, is perhaps the first to introduce the idea of good aging in his essay, On Old Age which was penned in the year 44 BC. He wrote this essay in his early 60 s to show that old age is not a phase of decline and loss, and if approached properly becomes a time for positive change and productive functioning (Baltes Baltes, 1990). Over the last few decades the subject of successful aging has been the topic of a number of scholarly articles and books and has recently been tied to participatory arts and humanities programming through agencies that provide services to the older adult demographic. As public libraries struggle to remain relevant in today s society and respond to the changing needs of older adult patrons it is important to become more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 20. The Four Key Components Of The SARA Model 1. Process of conflict resolution for supervisors Conflict resolution is a process bringing about constructive change between or within the parties in conflict. The process usually involves four major steps. The first step is to establish the cause of the conflict. This involves gathering as many information as possible about the cause of the conflict, which will assist in finding the solution to the conflict. The more information collected, the easier the conflict can be resolved. The next step is to think outside the box in regard to the problem or to look beyond the incident. This involves establishing the origin of the conflict, it could be a small issue that happened years before, but the stress level has developed to the point where the parties involved have begun to attack one another individually rather than dealing with the real issue. The third step request solutions from the parties involved in the conflict. This is done by asking each of the parties to suggest how the situation can be changed, then identifying the most suitable course of action. The last step is to let the parties to agree on the course of action and time frames to end the conflict. 2. Components of problem solving (the SARA model) There are four key components of SARA model of problem solving. These include scanning, analysis, response, and assessment (Miller, Hess, Orthmann, 2010). Scanning entails identifying and providing description of the problem, while analysis entails ... Historically, the Grauballe Man is considered to be one of the most well preserved body of all time. It was discovered in the peat bogs in Jutland, Denmark. The body showed signs of violence indicating that the man was murdered rather than dying of natural causes. Heaney s poem indicates his preoccupation with the body because it evokes him of the atrocities that has happened during The Trouble. Heaney utilizes imagery to describe the bog body, utilizes metaphor to associate bog body and the victims of Northern Ireland, and utilizes allusion to make historical references. Heaney states that, hung in the scales with beauty and atrocity: with the Dying Gaul too strictly compassed. Dying Gaul is a Hellenistic sculpture that realistically depicts the pain and suffering experienced by a dying man, the root of the reference is that the pose of the sculpture reminiscences the death position of the bog man. Heaney uses the allusion of Dying Gaul in order to make the reader develop the idea of the unification of artifice and nature, which reveals the unique characteristics of human beings. Additionally, the Grauballe Man itself, is also an allusion. The allusion of the Grauballe Man exemplifies the brutal history that has happened in the North. The Grauballe Man personifies the sacrifices for religious excursions in Northern Ireland during The Troubles. Furthermore, the cured wound opens inward to a dark elderberry place exemplifies that the open wound will forever be exposed to the brutality and the violence that is happening in Northern Ireland. Their flattened surfaces gather energy from sunlight while openings on their undersides bring in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. The cells of a leaf are pack in between two layers of epidermal cells, which provide the leaf with a waxy, almost impermeable cuticle that defends against water loss. The only way for gases to diffuse in and out of the leaf is through small openings on the underside of the leaf, the stomata then open and close according to the plant s needs. The electron acceptor of the light reactions, NADP+, is a relation to NAD , which functions as an electron carrier in cellular respiration. The two molecules differ only by the presence of an extra phosphate group in the NADP+ molecule. Light reactions use solar power to reduce NADP+ to NADPH by adding a pair of electrons along with a hydrogen nucleus. The light reactions then generate ATP by powering the addition of a phosphate group to ADP, a process called photophosphorylation. Therefore, light energy is converted to chemical energy in the form of two compounds which are NADPH, a source of energized electrons, and ATP, the useful energy currency of the light reactions produce no sugar which occurs in the second stage of photosynthesis, which is called the Calvin cycle. According to a 2001 study, only 11% of college students have good sleep quality and 73% have occasional sleep problems (Brown, 2014). Many college students misjudge the need for a good night s sleep. There are many factors that contribute to a pattern of poor sleeping habits such as, stresses of classes and jobs, being independent and living on your own for the first time, and being surrounded by a very active social scene that can be found on almost all campuses. Most people need to sleep eight hours each night, this being especially true for college students. There are two types of sleep, rapid eye movement (REM) and non rapid eye movement (NREM). NREM sleep is divided into four stages, stages three and four are referred to slow wave sleep. REM is a very active type of sleep where the brain is almost as active as if it was awake. Deep sleep is essential for restoring energy and allowing the body to undergo maintenance. When in NREM wounds are healed, white blood cells are created to aid your body s defenses, muscles are restored, and the growth hormone is released. Without enough deep sleep, all of these processes will be lacking (Rama, Cho, Kushida 2005). NREM sleep accounts for 75 80% of sleep time. • 28. Fears And Application Of Skepticism Towards Witchcraft Essay The Heightening and Application of Skepticism towards Witchcraft Throughout the period ranging from the late 16th to early 18th century, the witchcraft mania and trials dominated the religious, secular, and popular spheres of life. Within the mainstream popular beliefs in magic and the prosecution of such acts, there existed the few, but strong voices of skepticism. These skeptical works did stir up these popular beliefs; however, these opposing views did not generate much change. Where these views are able to clear a path towards to the decline and eradication of witchcraft trials is ultimately within the application of these views. While the authors and speakers from the skeptical texts written in the late 16th to early 18th century were interested in combating and reformulating the popular beliefs in witchcraft and its many faces, the major manifestation of their skepticism results in a critique of the process of witchcraft trials, their legal methodology, and their validity in a moral and reasonable society. Many of the skeptics within the time in and surrounding the 17th century were concerned, as many early writers had been, with the reality of magic as a whole. Living within the uprising of witchcraft trials and beliefs in 1584, Reginald Scot appeared as an unaided voice of skepticism against a sea of passionate belief. In his text, Discoverie of Witchcraft, Scot outlines the crimes witches are often committed for, but omits the crimes of magical sorts. He sites ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How Does Levi Characterize Nietzsche s Sickness In Primo Levi s The Drowned And The Saved, his analysis of the Holocaust had conclusions and assumptions that resonated with the philosophy of Nietzsche. More precisely, points made by Levi can be drawn back to Nietzsche s sickness , slave morality and the role of the ascetic priest. Although Levi is thorough to acknowledge the ideas of Nietzsche in his writing, he fails to fully grasp how Nietzschean philosophy could view these events. First, I would like to identify the parallels to Nietzsche s sickness . However, in the case of the Third Reich, Hitler gave his followers the Jewish as a scapegoat to their problems. To Nietzschean philosophy Hitler is equivalent to the ascetic priest who redirects the public s ressentiment to the Jewish. It s important to note that ressentiment also built in the Lagers but through the systemized degradation employed by the Hitler, it was redirected amongst the prisoners. Nietzsche would see this in the Kapos and SS men, as they redirected the prisoners ressentiment onto other prisoners due to prisoner on prisoner abuse. Furthermore, the self deceptive aspect of slave morality can be seen in Levi s work. When Levi comments on the interrogations of Nazis after the war, he examines the justifications made by the accused (Levi pg 27). This asserts that the accused relied on self deception as a way to see their acts as just. This parallels to the self deception in slave morality as the weak see themselves as strong by adjusting their realities just as the Nazis. Lastly, Levi remarks rather negatively of Nietzsche. He notes that Nietzsche s philosophy led to his morals becoming removed from the morality common to all time causing him to lose touch with reality (Levi pg 106, 107). • 33. Difference Between Reasonable Suspicion And Reasonable Doubt The issue within this paper focuses on the difference between reasonable suspicion and probable doubt. The two appear similar in many ways as both require the best judgment of the law enforcement personnel. But they are in fact different, and all law enforcement must know the difference in order for the evidence to be admissible in court. Law enforcement is obligated to follow the protocols and procedures outlined by the U.S. Supreme Court; if law enforcement does not follow the laws, perpetrators could be released and free to commit more crimes. Proving probable cause and reasonable suspicion are imperative to avoid violating the rights of citizens. The police need only reasonable suspicion to stop an individual and question him or her, and they may search for weapons if they believe that the person is armed or presents an imminent threat of bodily harm (Taylor, 2012). Reasonable suspicion is when a law enforcement personnel presumes a crime has been or is about to be committed. For instance, a police officer observes a vehicle driving unusually faster than the others on the road, therefore performing a speed check using radar. The car is, in fact, speeding so the officer pursues the vehicle and pulls them over. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer notices the suspect scrambling and whispering while leaning around the car. • 35. Sensory Perceptual Phenomena Is An Event A Living Organism Sensory Perceptual Phenomena is an event a living organism experiences that involves biological, psychological, and cognitive determinants as a response to the environment (Gorbel, Oct. 28th). In order for the living organism to experience this phenomena, the brain and nervous system must organize and stabilize the living organism s sensory perceptual system (Gorbel, Nov. 16th) A primary function of the sense are biological transducers, devices that convert one kind of energy into another (Coon Mitterer, 124). The basic process that occurs in the sensory perceptual system begins with a physical energy from the living organism s environment. Then the phylogenetically engineered external organ is used in order to collect the energy from the environment. Receptor cells are then stimulated and create electro chemical reactions. Electrical impulses are encoded with information and travel the neural net. It will then be sent to a specific structure of the brain that correlates with the external organ. The information is decoded and the living organism becomes aware; this causes a physical stimulus response, also known as a sensation (Gorbel, Oct, 28th). However, there are other processes that are involved before the living organism produces a perception from a physical sensation. Other sensory organs and systems include: the eye and visual system, ears and auditory system, the nose and olfaction, taste buds or tongue and gustation, somesthetic sense and warning and reminding ...
