Racial Harmony Week Essay example
Racial tension is one of the major issues in the U.S. today. Since many centuries ago, this has been an
internal problem in this country and this has caused racial strife and disunity among people. There are
many who believe that racism is a thing of the past. However, racial tensions are still rampant in this
nation and many others. These kinds of problems affect all of us, especially the minorities. If the
problems of racial discrimination and tension are not being solved, minorities are likely to feel that
they are treated differently. The crucial thing is not to overlook the different races and cultures that are
in the community, but to embrace our differences and have mutual respect among races in order to live
in harmony. As ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are the ones that are educating the youth not only academically, but also mentally. It is necessary
to note that some institutions already have some activities and events in place that are devoted to
acknowledging people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. One example of such events is
Michigan State University s Global Festival.
According to msu.edu, the Global Festival is a community event that draws together a crowd ranging
from 4,000 to 5,000 visitors from the Lansing and East Lansing community. This event celebrates both
our diversity and the human experience that binds us together. On top of that, this event also
contributes significantly to the spirit of community that is so unique to MSU, through the joint efforts
of MSU s nationality student groups and the residents of the greater Lansing community ( Global ).
This festival, which is being held every year by MSU, is free and is a huge success for the university.
Although there are already events that make people understand the cultural and background of people
from around the world, these kinds of events tend to be held in the span of one day, which is
insufficient for students to deeply immerse themselves in the understanding of other cultures.
Institutions and community centers in Michigan still need to organize more effective and efficient
events that can remind people of the racial tensions in the past and the negative results that came out

Examples Of Cognitive Dissonance Theory
Defining who you are is always such an arduous task. I never know what to say and I always draw a
blank when I m put on the spot. I never know what to say because I never really put too much thought
into defining myself. It s usually just something that you don t think about too much because honestly
it s pretty difficult. Luckily there are theories that propose many ideas that help me define myself.
Theories such as the Symbolic Interaction theory, cognitive dissonance theory, expectancy violations
theory, and temperament. These four theories are each very different but they can all be used to help
define who a person is. They propose reasoning and thought behind the ways we behave,
communicate, and feel. What we might think to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cognitive dissonance can formally be defined as feeling of discomfort resulting from inconsistent
attitudes, thoughts and behaviors, ( Communication 90). We will have a feeling of discomfort if new
informations doesn t fit with what we already know and we will take many steps to reduce it (
Communication 90). We do this mainly because we seek psychological consistencies and that feeling
of discomfort can lead us to changing our attitudes and behaviors ( Communication 93). For example,
when we try and keep dissonance from happening we will either ignore the different views that are
presented, change either our views or the other person s views depending on the situation, or trying to
reassure ourselves after making a big decision ( Communication 92). Dissonance also comes in
different forms of impact. We will take into account how severe the situation is before making a final
decision, or the magnitude of the situation ( Communication 94). The magnitude is how much
dissonance is felt ( Communication 94). We take the account of magnitude in by looking at
importance, ratio, and rationale of the situation ( Communication 94 95). Importance is how
significant we see the situation to be (95). The last two parts are ratio, the dissonant cognitions
compared to the consonant cognitions, and rationale which is what we decide the reason behind the
dissonance is ( Communication 95). With the cognitive dissonance theory there are different ways in
which we can perceive information and that help us reduce dissonance ( Communication 96). The four
perception types are selective exposure, selective attention, selective interpretation, and selective
retention ( Communication 96). The first perception is selective exposure which can be defined as
looking at the information the we want to ( Communication 96). The

Abimelech Of Gerar Book Report
Reflection Once again, Abraham and Sarah moved and they settled in Gerar. Upon meeting King
Abimelech of Gerar, Abraham repeated the same mistake he made when he encountered Pharaoh in
Egypt (Gen. 12 vv. 10 13). Although God had continually shown His faithfulness to Abraham, he
failed to trust God. Instead of trusting God, Abraham allowed fear to overtake him and he told
Abimelech that Sarah was his sister vv. 1 2. Just like Pharaoh, Abimelech took Sarah. Consequently,
the lie was the same but the consequences were different. Abraham s deceit not only endangered the
lives of the people of Gerar, but he placed Sarah in danger and risked losing the child God promised to
bless him with in Genesis 18 v. 10. However, God is faithful so ... Show more content on

However, the celebration did not last long because Sarah was troubled by the way, Ishmael played
with Isaac. Furthermore, she did not want Ishmael to share in Isaac s inheritance. Sarah was so
offended that she referred to Hagar and Ishmael as slave woman and boy. As a result, Sarah demanded
that Abraham send the slave woman and the boy away vv. 8 10. I believe Ishmael s behavior reminded
Sarah of her experience with Hagar and she wanted to protect Isaac from having a similar experience
(Gen. 16 v. 5). Moreover, Sarah probably never got over her jealousy of Hagar so this was her way of
getting rid of Hagar and Ishmael for good vv. 8 10. As expected, Abraham was upset because he loved
Ishmael and he probably loved Hagar too. Though God knew how much Abraham loved Ishmael, He
assured him that he should listen to Sarah. Besides, Ishmael was not part of God s plan; God had made
it clear in Genesis 17 v.7 and v.19 that Isaac was the heir He had promised Abraham. Therefore,
Ishmael had to be removed in order for God s plan for Abraham and Isaac to be fulfilled vv. 11 13.
However, God re affirmed His promise to make Ishmael a great nation (Gen. 17

During the London 2012 Olympics, star performers winning gold got a lot of attention but the Games
also featured many collective events in which small and big teams compete. And so, in this article, I
thought I would take a look at the dynamics of collective rather than individual performance and try to
answer the question: how can you as a manager get the best out of your team members?
Let me say upfront that pay, praise and promotion do have some effect on motivation levels in the
workplace but that a manager just using these P s will run into deep seated engagement issues.
My experience but also a lot of good literature on the topic have convinced me over time that there are
indeed three primary levers a manager can play with to boost motivation and those are:
1. Providing meaningful job content and role purpose,
2. Making use of existing skills together with the opportunity to develop and learn, and
3. Granting autonomy at work.
Let s look at them in turn:
1. Providing meaningful job content and role purpose

Kate Chopin s An Hour
Author Kate Chopin is famous for some of the most influential feminist stories and novels in the
Western canon. The Story of an Hour is one such text. In this story, Chopin tackles many of the
concerns that are essential to feminism, including the willpower and expression of a woman s
distinctive identity separate from the identity of her husband and the right of a woman to identify and
experience her own interests. While there is an aspect of this story that is provocative, namely, that
Mrs. Mallard feels excited after learning that her husband has died, the reader can empathize with
Mrs. Mallard s feelings and support her.
Critics on Kate Chopin seem to focus their criticism on her themes and particular text than her overall
writing skills. One popular book for critics seems to be her novel The Awakening. The book is now
herald as her greatest work, yet when it was written reviewers rejected it for its improper and vulgar
subject matter (Stripe). One critic deems it not a healthy book, and another determine that it leaves one
sick of human nature. One writer even said the language to describe the story was not fit for
publication (Stripe). But today The Awakening is widely embraced, and one critic in embracing the
book said, Mrs. Kate Chopin s The Awakening, seems to me to be the finest novel of its sort written by
an American, and to rank among the world s masterpieces of short fiction (Cantwell).
The short story is a powerful tale about a woman, Mrs.

Shusaku Endo s Silence-Second Ending
Shusaku Endo s Silence 2nd Ending
A sticky drop of sweat rolled down from my greasy, unwashed hair all the way down into my old and
ripped peasant clothes to my chest. The guards gripped and squeezed my hand, making sure and
double checking once in every few seconds that I had no way of escaping, though I wasn t going to
escape anyway. There were two guards, one guard at each side of me. Each one carried a stick, a long
katana, along with a whip tied around their waist. As I walked down the streets many husbands and
wives came out to see the wonderful sight. They threw spears, pointy rocks and leftover food at me,
and called my horrific names like stupid priest and ignorant padre as I walked down the main streets
of Nagasaki.

Mary and Jesus s face had disappeared from all the thousands and thousands of people stepping onto
the fumie. Just then, I saw a flash of bright light, and then I heard someone call my name.
Don t step on the fumie , the voice said.
No matter what happens, do not step on the fumie. Just wait and pretend to think. I am here to help
you. I am here to help guide you to the right direction. The strange voice said. Then, after about 5
seconds, the echo of the last word disappeared into the darkness and stillness of the Nagasaki sea.
The official started to talk to the samurais. Minutes passed by like seconds. I looked up at the sky and
silently prayed to God in my heart. God, help me , I pleaded. No answer came. Suddenly, there was a
loud BANG . In fact, it was so loud that even the official jumped out from his seat on accident and fell
to the ground. The sound shook the floor like an earthquake, and all the shots of sake fell from the
table and poured down onto the sand slowly, like oil spilling onto a soft silk cloth. But what was
strange was that the spill of the sake had spilled to form a face. A face like no other that I had never

Essay on Analysis of The Essenes and the Dead Sea Scrolls
Analysis of The Essenes and the Dead Sea Scrolls
Preamble
The grass withers and the flowers fall but the word of our God stands forever Isaiah 40.8
Mohammed Dib, a Bedouin shepherd of the T Amireh tribe (Keller, 1957, 401) could not have known
that he would be the person who, in 1947, would bring to bear the words of Isaiah 40.8
This shepherd boy had been clambering around the clefts and gullies of a rock face on Wadi Qumran,
north of the Dead Sea hoping to find one of his lost lambs. Thinking that it could have taken refuge in
a cave he threw stones at the opening. He heard a jar break, became fearful and ran to fetch his fellow
tribesmen. What they discovered were written scrolls of ancient papyrus, stuffed in jars and ... Show

There have been 400 manuscripts including 100 Biblical manuscripts discovered. These include every
book in the Old Testament with the exception of
Esther. The best known is the complete book of Isaiah. The scrolls and fragments
Which come from Qumran date from 200 B.C. to A.D. 68. Those from Wadi Murabba at go up to A.D.

found the ruins of a cemetery and a settlement which had been the nucleus of a Jewish community
which Father de Vaux views as possibly being the wilderness retreat of the Essenes. It will take a
whole generation of Biblical scholars to assess the value of these manuscripts (Harding, 1956)
Introduction
Indeed, some 50 years have elapsed and many Biblical scholars have assessed the manuscripts.
It will not be the purposes of this paper to debate the validity of the documents nor enter into
archeological debate, this paper however will in Section 1, provide further historical evidence in
support of the Essenes sect dwelling at Qumran. The writer will present an outline of the monastic
lifestyle of the Essenes, their closed community, their laws and beliefs.

Who Is The Metaphor In Ralph Waldo Emerson s Transparent...
Grant Rivard Ms. Krafcik English Honors II 29 November 2016 Emerson s Transparent Eyeball Ralph
Waldo Emerson uses the metaphor of a transparent eyeball to illustratethat humanity can obtain insight
about themselves by focusing on the innocence and purity of nature, which is synonymous with their
own spirit. Those who stop to appreciate nature have a better understanding of themselves. Nature is
not concerned with money, status, deadlines, or any of the other millions of things that the

Busy adults should enjoy nature with the abandon that a child would. Like an innocent child, he points
out that nature never wears a mean appearance (241). When Emersonexplains, The sun illuminates
only the eye of the man, but shines into the eye and heart of the child (241), he givesthe reader insight
as to how they are alike. Children are not in a rush, and neither is nature. People need to remember
their inner child and stop trying to hurry and accomplish and worry about everything all the time.
They should stop and really pay attention. Emerson makes the point that if people will look at nature
through the eyes of a child once again, and really see it as if they are looking through a transparent
eyeball, then they will get back in touch with their own thoughts and feelings. Children are not caught
up in society s politics, rules, and social problems the way adults are. Instead they are focused on the
joys of nature such as picking flowers and climbing trees. Everyone should try to look at the world in
a more child like way in order to remind themselves of its beauty and what really matters.Nature helps

The Article On Aliens Among Us
Extraterrestrial life has been a big topic for Americans since day one. According to author Lee Speigel
there is an estimation of 48 percent of Americans throughout the nation that believe in life on other
planets while only 35 percent reject the idea. Life on other planets exists. According to the article
Aliens among Us by Paul, David extraterrestrial evidence has already been discovered such as
different types of bacteria and even water. The article Aliens among Us is a credible source because it
has many explanations and possibilities on how life on other planets can easily be real. Extraterrestrial
life can be many things such as plants or living bacteria. Astronomers have proven that there is water
in other planets such as Mars. Water contains different types of bacteria and cells, water in other
planets can be one of our best piece of evidence that we can prove that there is life on other planets.
There has been UFO s crashes that have been recorded such as in Roswell, New Mexico 1947 but the
government took all the evidence and it s probably in Area 51. Although there is no hard evidence that
proves aliens are real, NASA has announced that they will be able to find living creatures by the year
2025.
On July 3rd, 1947 a UFO crashed in New Mexico in a small town called Roswell. People that have

Child Physical Abuse And Juvenile Delinquency
Child Physical Abuse and Juvenile Delinquency
Introduction
According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, child abuse and maltreatment roughly
doubles the probability that an individual engages in many types of crime (Picker, 2014). More
specifically, it is noted that those who experience physical abuse as a child are 30% more likely than
their counterparts to commit violent crimes as a juvenile (Wisdom and Maxfield, 2001). Physical
abuse of a child may include but is not limited to injuries that result from kicking, punching, biting,
beating, or hitting a child that are non accidental, As defined by St. Luke s Cornwall Hospital. It is
believed that because of such treatment the child is inclined to portray the same aggressive behavior in
their juvenile years, which creates a cycle of violence (Wisdom and Maxfield, 2001). This leads to my
research question: Are juveniles who experience physical abuse in their childhood more likely to
commit violent crimes?
The term juvenile in this case can be described as an individual who is at least 18 years of age or
younger. I hypothesize that juveniles who have experienced physical abuse as a child are more likely
to commit violent crimes. My null hypothesis is that being physically abused and the type of crime
one commits have no relation. This is a perfect example of Travis Hirschi s Social Control Theory,
which states when an individual has experienced a lack of social connections or a lack of social
network that

Many ships plied the Great Lakes treacherous waters through the 19th century and without surprise
there were many sinkings and many lives lost. Parry Sound got its first full dose in November 1879
when the Waubano mysteriously sank. It was a side wheeled ship often carrying goods and people
between the Sound and Collingwood. Auspiciously a bride had a dream days before portending the
disaster. The weather had been bad, typical for so late in the season, but the last sighting had it doing
well. When it sank, all 24 passengers and crew went down with her including the bride and her groom.

There are two sources we have to compare and analyse, each corresponding to the impact First World
War had on Britain. Source B is an extract taken from an interviewed Suffragist for a television
programme, whilst source C is a letter addressed to the members of WSPU by Mrs Emmeline
Pankhurst. As far as we are concerned, the two sources are from feminists, who were fighting for the

In Source D, we are presented to a photograph of the offices of the Oldham branch of the NUWSS
during a by election in Oldham in 1911, before the beginning of the war. Oldham is large town in
Manchester, which means that the feminist influence had begun to distribute throughout England,
gaining support from all the women that belonged in different classes of society. This photograph even
displays the well managed organization of their campaigns, as they have managed to transmit their
idea to women of all ages in different places. Since the photo was taken in Oldham, it means that the
message is addressed to working class women. We can understand that even from the heading that

the audience by making their campaign relatable and approachable, which is an effective tactic to gain

The Issue Of Sexual Orientation
In the United States of America, 1.8 percent of men and 1.5 percent of women identify themselves as
homosexuals (Volokh 1). This means that in a group of one hundred men, around two of them are
homosexuals, and the same goes for women. The background regarding sexual orientation is vast, and
a lot of different definitions of the concept have been introduced throughout time. Nevertheless,
although homosexuality is fairly common in the United States, many people still misunderstand it.
The different types of sexual orientations and their difference from other sexual related terms, such as
gender role and gender identity, are all confused by the general population. Sadly, even today, there
are people that believe in a right or wrong sexual orientation. Moreover, the origins of sexual
orientation are highly discussed and debated by the scientific community, with theories including
biological and environmental explanations. The importance of such origins resides in the fact that this
nature nurture debate is capable of changing people s perspectives towards homosexuality, and even
though the media has done a great job by transforming any sex related topic from a taboo to an
acceptable conversation point, society still needs to grasp a lot about sexual orientation. Particularly,
the fact that sexual orientation is a complex, largely misunderstood human characteristic resulting
from a combination of biological and environmental factors that play an essential role in society s

In 2003 the USA attacked Iraq. Washington s official account of the reasons to invade Iraq was
centred on the argument that Iraq is a threat to its neighbours as well as to the USA. This was due to
Iraq supposedly having WMDs and seeking for nuclear weapons and Saddam being unpredictable and
irrational actor. Furthermore, it was argued that Saddam supports terrorists and could give WMDs to
them. It was USA s mission to bring democracy and freedom to the Iraqi people (Hudson, 2005: 298

In the same speech he promised the continuation of war on terror (Bush, 2002). It was stressed by
Condoleezza Rice, who was the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, that Iraq was
unwilling to cooperate with the UN inspectors and that Iraq was lying about its assumed WMDs (Rice,
2002). Bush, Rice and other members of the administration made clear that Iraq was dangerous
because of its WMDs and therefore Iraq should be invaded. It was also stated in the Joint Resolution
that authorised the war that Iraq had WMDs, seeked nuclear weapons and was a threat to the USA
(H.R.J. Res. 114, 2002).
However, if WMDs and noncooperation with UN inspectors made Iraq such a huge threat, it has to be
asked why Egypt and Israel, for example, were not attacked. For example, Israel has not ratified the
Nonproliferation Treaty or the 1972 biological and toxic weapons convention and Egypt has not
signed the Chemical Weapons Convention (Hubbel, 1998). Moreover, in general, it is not only
Saddam Hussein who has murdered thousands and defied UN resolutions. The USA, however, is not
seriously planning to attack those other states (Mearsheimer and Walt, 2003).
David Dunn argues that this is, when it comes to North Korea, because the administration believes
that North Korea is militarily strong enough to deter the USA, but Iraq is not and Iraq has to be
stopped before it is, too. (Dunn, 2003: 286) Even if this was true for all the states in the

An In-Depth Analysis Of Gender Issues In Cosmopolitan...
Introduction
Traditionally gender has been viewed as a simple binary category with certain dichotomies that exist
between the masculine and feminine. The categorization is borne from the belief that because men and
women are biologically different that is, different sexes, there will be a natural difference in the way
they behave within the society (language use being an important aspect of this behavior). There is
little evidence that this belief is based on anything other than stereotyping. Just by virtue that women
and men are biologically different, the society believes that the men and women should behave

An essential aspect of this issue of Cosmopolitan is that its head editor was a woman, Helen Gurley
Brown, which indicates a female vision in the production of this magazine (Gurley Brown 1965).
Nonetheless, all the other important positions for the magazine, from the president of Hearst
Magazines, Richard E. Deems, to the head of Fiction, William Carrington Guy, were all men (Gurley
Brown 1965). This information paints an interesting picture, because of Gurley Brown s position at
the helm while valuable, still had to accommodate these other male visions on the magazine. The rest
of the positions are mostly filled by women, Fashion and Features, Merchandising, Copy, Beauty,
Staff Manager, and almost all of the Editorial Staff (Gurley Brown 1965). In this sense, Cosmopolitan
was slowly turning not only in a women s magazine but in a women produced

The Effects Of Radiation On Public Health
The Effects of Radiation in the Environment on Public Health
Introduction
Radiation in the environment is widespread and a necessary process for the existence of life. We
encounter it from natural sources like the sun or from modern technology such as computed
tomography better known as CT scan, and nuclear power plants. Radiation from sunlight is essential
but too much of it can be harmful, just as the use of radiation in CT scans. Computed tomography can
provide lifesaving information about disease but can also cause disease.
One of the topics that every so often pops up in the news is radioactive waste management and
protecting the public against the hazards of radioactive waste from power plants and other facilities
that produce radioactive waste. People want to know where is this waste disposed and/or stored and
who has access this material. Many of the concerns center around the dangers of radioactive leaks and
exposure; consequently, most people do not want this material in their neighborhood. Another concern
is the use of waste material as nuclear weapons by terrorists.
The disposal and managing of radioactive waste is extremely complicated, not only because of the
dangers hazardous waste poses, but also because of the strict compliance the management of this
waste must undergo. If radioactive hazardous waste is compliant with the regulations of all the
governing federal agencies, it does not pose an environmental public health risk.

The Use Of Light In The Film Citizen Kane
INTRODUCTION
In films a big concept has always been the use of lights. The use of lights in films helps create a
meaning about what the scene is about and at times reveals a little more. In cinematography there is
different types of lighting such as: three point lighting, fill light, key light, high key and low key
lighting, top or under, lighting and many more. In the times when films were black and white the use
of light is not easily visible. The use of black and white still helped portray the meaning behind many
of the scenes, whether the scene got lighter or darker.A film that was successful in using white and
black was Citizen Kane by Orson Welles. A film that was in color was the Godfather directed by
Francis Ford Coppola. The use of lighting reflects within color because it gives the audience more to
look at and it becomes very noticeable when the light changes for a specific scene. The use of lighting
styles is necessary in films to bring attention to the scene and to be able to produce an interesting film.
The director of Citizen Kane had the choice of making the film black and white or color but
eventually decided to create it in black and white. In an interview about the film Citizen Kane a critic
acknowledged the use of light and said Exploiting light and shadow inventively to express meaning
and establish a desired atmosphere made Orson Welles Citizen Kane a significant historical event that
impacted both audiences and film genre in many ways. The

St. Augustine s Confessions Research Paper
Confessions Response Paper
St. Augustine s Confessions is a book written by Augustine about his life. The book goes through his
whole life from and important events during it. It is mainly about him and his journey to becoming a
Christian. His mother; Monica, is a firm Christian believer while his father; Patrick was a Pagan.
Patrick never wanted Augustine to be baptized or raised as a Christian. Augustine grew up to be a bad
boy who would sin a lot. In book 2 he is a teenager and like every other teenager, he has raging
hormones and a sex drive. He has a craving for women and he gets in with a bad group of boys who
steal things. Augustine steals a pear only for the thrill of stealing something but eventually he hits rock
bottom with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He wants a life of celibacy and a focus with God so he prays a famous prayer. Augustine gets a bad
cold and has to quit his job and he just weeps about his life then something snaps and right then and
there he becomes a Christian. I much unto Thee: and Thou, O Lord, how long? how long, Lord, wilt
Thou be angry for ever? ...by a light as it were of serenity infused into my heart, all the darkness of
doubt vanished away. (Augustine, 152) Two years later his son dies and moves to Cassriacum with his
mom and friends but not too long they all want to go home. Book 9 while waiting to go back to Africa
Monica gets very ill and dies. Augustine later becomes to be a bishop and the Roman Empire is
crumbling along with the city. He is in the dessert and he dies, he dies along with Rome. This story
has been my favorite book we ve read so far in class, because it really takes you along the journey
through his life and some of his stories are, or can be relatable to today s world. It was a hard read
since the way it s worded is a bit difficult, you still have an understanding of what s going on. Parts of
this book remind me of Les Miserables, where Jean Val Jean is a criminal and has kindness showed to
him by a bishop

The Controversial Election Of 1876
Jayla Buie

AMH2020
Election of 1876
The contested election of 1876 has been pronounced by Historians, as one of the most hostile,
controversial, and most disputed presidential elections in American history. Representing the
Republicans was Samuel J. Tilden of New York and Rutherford B. Hayes of Ohio representing the
Democrats. With Hayes being outpolled in the popular vote, Tilden wins. With the recounting and
passing of the Electoral Commission, Hayes wins the election of 1876 and becomes president of the
United States.
With Grant s corruption in office and the Panic of 1873, the Republican Party was assumed to be in
trouble. But, Rutherford B. Hayes was a war hero. He supported Radical Reconstruction and

A general question would be, Why would African Americans vote for a Republican candidate over a
Democrat? At the time, Republicans represented equal rights while Democrats represented the defeat
of African Americans. From 1876 to 1965, racial segregation laws known as the Jim Crow laws was
enacted. It mandated racial segregation amongst the southern states. African Americans suffered legal
and extra judicial discrimination. The legal system acted as a political oppression against African
Americans in the south. As soon as blacks gained the right to vote, secret societies sprang up. Groups
like the Ku Klux Klan, also known as the KKK, assaulted and murdered local republican leaders. This
racial affect on the African American community took a century for Black America to

The Sacraments Portrayed In Les Misérables
The Sacraments Portrayed in Les Misérables God gives us unconditional forgiveness each day even if
we do not go to reconciliation to be forgiven of our sins. Forgiveness works both ways in the eyes of
God. In order to receive full mercy and forgives from God we need to go to Reconciliation and
properly be forgiven from our sins. Jean Valjean knew he had sinned and turned away from God but
he refused to go and be forgiven of his sins. God had given Jean Valjean forgiveness since the day he
sinned and Jean finally realized he had been forgiven since the beginning after all the life lessons he
went through during his lifetime. Jean Valjean finally realized God had given him the gift of forgives
from the beginning and knew he had to find away to fully turn his life back around. Jean did not think
he would be forgiven easily for the crime he had committed. Forgiveness and mercy from God does
not come to us in easy ways. We have to go though many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, Jean decided to turn his life around for the better and he was finally forgiven and holy. Jean
knew he could not live his whole life in shame of knowing he had committed a sin and would not be
forgiven. This belief of becoming holy is related to Reconciliation because when you receive the
sacrament of Reconciliation you are forgiven and cleansed of your sins and becoming holy with God.
Forgiveness and Mercy were shown by Valjean throughout the movie when he could have killed
Javert but chose not to because he realized he was in the wrong and Javert was in the right. If Vajean
would have killed Javert he would have committed another sin other than doing what everyone says
he should be doing and try to receive forgives back. Also, Javert was going to kill Jean and he stopped
and realized he can be free and let him go because was doing the right thing by saving

Characters in the General Prologue to The Canterbury...
The Canterbury Tales are essentially a Chaucerian satire; the author sets out to deliberately upset the
social order present at the time and proceeds to mock the faults innate in the characters. Chaucer gives
a compressed view of characters such as the Knight and the Monk; in their descriptions, a preview of
the kind of stories we can expect from these people is given. Take for example the Miller; his physical
description alleviates him as a thick brute with a filthy mouth that was `moost of sin and harlotries ,
sufficed to say that his tale is one of adultery and sinful behaviour. However, Chaucer is not always as
straightforward as this in presenting the pilgrims to us. His effective policy in unhinging the social
hierarchy involves two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This Knight could always be depended on to be at the fore of battle in his service to his lord, in fact he
does this so exceptionally well that he appears to have the talent for travelling with an impressive
speed! He dared never to utter a word of rudeness and behaved meekly whilst in the company of those
not engaged with him on the battlefield. In keeping true to the tradition of his profession, his dress was
`nat gay , while his horse was considered good, however this is permitted, as it is essential to his
success. `And thereto hadde he ridden, no man ferre, as wel in cristendom as in hethenesse once the
audience reaches these lines, Chaucer s sarcasm is in such a wholesome state that only a fool could
fail to detect it. The course of the Knight s expeditions may be believable in modern times, yet on
horseback in the middle ages, you ll forgive me if I scoff at its credibility. The agenda of the Knight s
conquests are put into questioning. `Throughout the Prologue, one set of values is being opposed to
another with the most deliberate though subtle, craft: generosity and charity are set against greed and
self indulgence....honesty against thievery and double dealing (Major, p.161). Claiming to be a
crusader of Christendom, his general practice is exposed by Chaucer the poet. `This ilke worthy knight
hadde been also somtyme with the lord of Palatye agayn another hethen in Turkye . Chaucer suggests

A Brief Note On Peer And Peer ( P2p )
Peer to peer (P2P) networking is a network of computers that have the capability of being either a
client or a server. Furthermore, P2P is the use of your own personal computer for the purpose of more
than just basic client only tasks. Peers on a network are able to share resources, storage space, and
processing power directly available to others hosts on the network without the need of a centralized
communications model like the client/server model. Each user of the network is both a supplier and a
consumer of the resources provided on the network. Because peers are not connected to a central
server it removes the risk of losing data through a central server crash.
One of the most widely known forms of Peer to Peer networking is simply instant messaging. This is
P2P in its simplest form. AOL, Facebook, MSN, are all examples of software that uses Peer to Peer
networking in order to allow users to message one another in real time. The goal of P2P is to make
things faster and safer, so it makes sense that many companies have moved to implementing instant
messaging as a standard of communication.
Another use of Peer to Peer networking is for illegal purposes. Many of us have heard of the widely
famous software Napster. It was originally known as the pioneer behind peer to peer file sharing.
Napster was commonly used for the purpose free music downloading. Users from all around would
come and upload free music, but the problem with this was copyright infringement. Many

Good evening Mr. Wehmeyer, this is Roderigo here. I feel not the need to excuse my love but find
myself in a situation where it be necessary ( can t afford to worsen my grade.) But do hear me out! For
your lessons have not been in vain. I surely can explain my actions using what we have learned in
class these many weeks and that I will, starting now. I ve noticed a difference between me and my
friend Iago, during that one class a few weeks ago where we talked about the locus of control me and
Iago compared our scores. I was rather surprised to find us being almost at complete opposite ends! I
personally appear to have an external locus of control meaning I think external forces are to blame. On
the other hand Iago has an internal locus of control meaning he thinks he is in control of situations
rather than external forces being the cause. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Alison In The Canterbury Tales
The character Alison in the Wife of Bath of Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales is an independent woman
who dictates what she wants with her life. Although the controversy still remains to this day about
whether or not she is a revolutionary feminist, she is clearly ahead of her time. In that time period, an
ordinary woman who portrayed herself the same way that Alison does would have been looked upon
negatively seen as a harlot even. Seeing how Alison conducts herself with such confidence and
lustiness , I believe that she is truly a feminist.
Sadly, the use of the word feminist had tended to bring a bitter taste in the mouth and mind in the past,
however, our modern day culture has managed to bring the true meaning of feminism to light, and ...

How Technology Has Impacted Our Society
I. Introduction Technology and its constant advancements have integrated itself into every aspect of
our world. Music has now become a place for the facilitation of experiences through technology in our
society. However, the monetization of music through technology has created a far more difficult
experience for the fans of music in all genres. In reference to technology, the term streaming is defined
as playing continuously as data is sent to a computer over the Internet , (Webster). The internet and its
streaming capabilities is an amazing tool used to connect the fans, almost instantly, to the music;
however, it also puts the content at risk due to the possible technological issues, exclusivity rights, and
digital piracy. One of the biggest reasons why technology has been impacted our society is because it
has made itself useful in our daily lives. Internet streaming technology has impacted our entertainment
by delivering audio and video very fast. So how does streaming work? Internet streaming technology
is created through a collaboration of three components the server, data stream, and decoder. Servers
are used to store information or data in its memory. When a consumer streams music online they are
receiving cable or satellite signals from the server to their device. Next, once your data has received it
has to be decoded back into audio and video. This continuous flow of information is known as
streaming.

Essay about Cultural Expectations in a Selection of Texts
In every society that I know of, there are cultural expectations. Literature tends to follow the same
expectations. We have had quite a few stories in this class where we focused on cultural expectations.
Rip in Rip Van Winkle, Editha and George in Editha and Major Molineux in My Kinsman, Major
Molineux are all victims of cultural expectations.
Let me start with Rip Van Winkle. This story actually takes place in two different time periods. Before
Rip fell asleep, he was living in the pre colonial era of the United States. He was expected to work and
take care of his family. The great error in Rip s composition was an insuperable aversion to all kinds
of profitable labor. (943) He had no qualms about work its self but he ... Show more content on

I feel that George is a victim of cultural expectations whereas Editha is influenced by it but she is not
victimized. Editha is a proud member of society and she wants what every other woman wants, a
strong husband who will fight for his country. She wants George to go and fight. She writes a letter
telling him that she loves him but the man I marry must love his country first of all. . . (1448) George
is expected to love his country above all and want to fight to protect it. He does not believe in the
cause of the Spanish American War. He is torn between his love for Editha and his disgust for the war.
George signs up for the war in a drunken stupor and still has the presence of mind to mock the war
with witty sarcasm as he walks the street near Editha s house. He obviously does not have any desire
to fight as he says: What a thing it is to have a country that can t be wrong, but if it is, is right anyway!
Editha does not even listen to what he is saying; she just hands him the letter and tells him to read it
after he starts. She could not be happier. George is one of the earliest people to die in the war; he is a
victim of cultural expectations. One can argue that Editha is a victim as well but I do not buy it. She
wears black in her mourning period but I think she feel honored that George died for her. I think I am
giving her too much credit when I say honored. She enjoys the attention that she gets after having

The History Of Hip-Hop
Hip hop began in the streets of New York City 44 years ago to be exact. Hip hop has gone though a lot
of changes up until now. From what I have learned from watching a documentary on Netflix is that hip
hop consists of: rap, graffiti, break dancing, and disc jockey. In this paper I will do my best to fully
explain how rap became what it is today. The way it emerged in 1970 s.
There are honestly only two ways I can start off by telling you about what I have learned about where
hip hop came from which no doubt it was DJ Kool Herc but even by telling you that before that the
sound that was really popular in New York was disco. This was very shortly before Herc. Late 60 s

  • 2. Racial Harmony Week Essay example Racial tension is one of the major issues in the U.S. today. Since many centuries ago, this has been an internal problem in this country and this has caused racial strife and disunity among people. There are many who believe that racism is a thing of the past. However, racial tensions are still rampant in this nation and many others. These kinds of problems affect all of us, especially the minorities. If the problems of racial discrimination and tension are not being solved, minorities are likely to feel that they are treated differently. The crucial thing is not to overlook the different races and cultures that are in the community, but to embrace our differences and have mutual respect among races in order to live in harmony. As ... It is necessary to note that some institutions already have some activities and events in place that are devoted to acknowledging people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. One example of such events is Michigan State University s Global Festival. According to msu.edu, the Global Festival is a community event that draws together a crowd ranging from 4,000 to 5,000 visitors from the Lansing and East Lansing community. This event celebrates both our diversity and the human experience that binds us together. On top of that, this event also contributes significantly to the spirit of community that is so unique to MSU, through the joint efforts of MSU s nationality student groups and the residents of the greater Lansing community ( Global ). This festival, which is being held every year by MSU, is free and is a huge success for the university. Although there are already events that make people understand the cultural and background of people from around the world, these kinds of events tend to be held in the span of one day, which is insufficient for students to deeply immerse themselves in the understanding of other cultures. Institutions and community centers in Michigan still need to organize more effective and efficient events that can remind people of the racial tensions in the past and the negative results that came out ... • 3. Examples Of Cognitive Dissonance Theory Defining who you are is always such an arduous task. I never know what to say and I always draw a blank when I m put on the spot. I never know what to say because I never really put too much thought into defining myself. It s usually just something that you don t think about too much because honestly it s pretty difficult. Luckily there are theories that propose many ideas that help me define myself. Theories such as the Symbolic Interaction theory, cognitive dissonance theory, expectancy violations theory, and temperament. These four theories are each very different but they can all be used to help define who a person is. They propose reasoning and thought behind the ways we behave, communicate, and feel. What we might think to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cognitive dissonance can formally be defined as feeling of discomfort resulting from inconsistent attitudes, thoughts and behaviors, ( Communication 90). We will have a feeling of discomfort if new informations doesn t fit with what we already know and we will take many steps to reduce it ( Communication 90). We do this mainly because we seek psychological consistencies and that feeling of discomfort can lead us to changing our attitudes and behaviors ( Communication 93). For example, when we try and keep dissonance from happening we will either ignore the different views that are presented, change either our views or the other person s views depending on the situation, or trying to reassure ourselves after making a big decision ( Communication 92). Dissonance also comes in different forms of impact. We will take into account how severe the situation is before making a final decision, or the magnitude of the situation ( Communication 94). The magnitude is how much dissonance is felt ( Communication 94). We take the account of magnitude in by looking at importance, ratio, and rationale of the situation ( Communication 94 95). Importance is how significant we see the situation to be (95). The last two parts are ratio, the dissonant cognitions compared to the consonant cognitions, and rationale which is what we decide the reason behind the dissonance is ( Communication 95). With the cognitive dissonance theory there are different ways in which we can perceive information and that help us reduce dissonance ( Communication 96). The four perception types are selective exposure, selective attention, selective interpretation, and selective retention ( Communication 96). The first perception is selective exposure which can be defined as looking at the information the we want to ( Communication 96). The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Abimelech Of Gerar Book Report Reflection Once again, Abraham and Sarah moved and they settled in Gerar. Upon meeting King Abimelech of Gerar, Abraham repeated the same mistake he made when he encountered Pharaoh in Egypt (Gen. 12 vv. 10 13). Although God had continually shown His faithfulness to Abraham, he failed to trust God. Instead of trusting God, Abraham allowed fear to overtake him and he told Abimelech that Sarah was his sister vv. 1 2. Just like Pharaoh, Abimelech took Sarah. Consequently, the lie was the same but the consequences were different. Furthermore, she did not want Ishmael to share in Isaac s inheritance. Sarah was so offended that she referred to Hagar and Ishmael as slave woman and boy. As a result, Sarah demanded that Abraham send the slave woman and the boy away vv. 8 10. I believe Ishmael s behavior reminded Sarah of her experience with Hagar and she wanted to protect Isaac from having a similar experience (Gen. 16 v. 5). Moreover, Sarah probably never got over her jealousy of Hagar so this was her way of getting rid of Hagar and Ishmael for good vv. 8 10. As expected, Abraham was upset because he loved Ishmael and he probably loved Hagar too. Though God knew how much Abraham loved Ishmael, He assured him that he should listen to Sarah. Besides, Ishmael was not part of God s plan; God had made it clear in Genesis 17 v.7 and v.19 that Isaac was the heir He had promised Abraham. And so, in this article, I thought I would take a look at the dynamics of collective rather than individual performance and try to answer the question: how can you as a manager get the best out of your team members? Let me say upfront that pay, praise and promotion do have some effect on motivation levels in the workplace but that a manager just using these P s will run into deep seated engagement issues. My experience but also a lot of good literature on the topic have convinced me over time that there are indeed three primary levers a manager can play with to boost motivation and those are: 1. Providing meaningful job content and role purpose, 2. Making use of existing skills together with the opportunity to develop and learn, and 3. Granting autonomy at work. • 7. Kate Chopin s An Hour Author Kate Chopin is famous for some of the most influential feminist stories and novels in the Western canon. The Story of an Hour is one such text. In this story, Chopin tackles many of the concerns that are essential to feminism, including the willpower and expression of a woman s distinctive identity separate from the identity of her husband and the right of a woman to identify and experience her own interests. While there is an aspect of this story that is provocative, namely, that Mrs. Mallard feels excited after learning that her husband has died, the reader can empathize with Mrs. Mallard s feelings and support her. Critics on Kate Chopin seem to focus their criticism on her themes and particular text than her overall writing skills. One popular book for critics seems to be her novel The Awakening. The book is now herald as her greatest work, yet when it was written reviewers rejected it for its improper and vulgar subject matter (Stripe). One critic deems it not a healthy book, and another determine that it leaves one sick of human nature. One writer even said the language to describe the story was not fit for publication (Stripe). But today The Awakening is widely embraced, and one critic in embracing the book said, Mrs. Kate Chopin s The Awakening, seems to me to be the finest novel of its sort written by an American, and to rank among the world s masterpieces of short fiction (Cantwell). • 12. Child Physical Abuse And Juvenile Delinquency Child Physical Abuse and Juvenile Delinquency Introduction According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, child abuse and maltreatment roughly doubles the probability that an individual engages in many types of crime (Picker, 2014). More specifically, it is noted that those who experience physical abuse as a child are 30% more likely than their counterparts to commit violent crimes as a juvenile (Wisdom and Maxfield, 2001). Physical abuse of a child may include but is not limited to injuries that result from kicking, punching, biting, beating, or hitting a child that are non accidental, As defined by St. Luke s Cornwall Hospital. It is believed that because of such treatment the child is inclined to portray the same aggressive behavior in their juvenile years, which creates a cycle of violence (Wisdom and Maxfield, 2001). This leads to my research question: Are juveniles who experience physical abuse in their childhood more likely to commit violent crimes? The term juvenile in this case can be described as an individual who is at least 18 years of age or younger. I hypothesize that juveniles who have experienced physical abuse as a child are more likely to commit violent crimes. My null hypothesis is that being physically abused and the type of crime one commits have no relation. This is a perfect example of Travis Hirschi s Social Control Theory, which states when an individual has experienced a lack of social connections or a lack of social network that ... This means that in a group of one hundred men, around two of them are homosexuals, and the same goes for women. The background regarding sexual orientation is vast, and a lot of different definitions of the concept have been introduced throughout time. Nevertheless, although homosexuality is fairly common in the United States, many people still misunderstand it. The different types of sexual orientations and their difference from other sexual related terms, such as gender role and gender identity, are all confused by the general population. Sadly, even today, there are people that believe in a right or wrong sexual orientation. Moreover, the origins of sexual orientation are highly discussed and debated by the scientific community, with theories including biological and environmental explanations. The importance of such origins resides in the fact that this nature nurture debate is capable of changing people s perspectives towards homosexuality, and even though the media has done a great job by transforming any sex related topic from a taboo to an acceptable conversation point, society still needs to grasp a lot about sexual orientation. Bush, Rice and other members of the administration made clear that Iraq was dangerous because of its WMDs and therefore Iraq should be invaded. It was also stated in the Joint Resolution that authorised the war that Iraq had WMDs, seeked nuclear weapons and was a threat to the USA (H.R.J. Res. 114, 2002). However, if WMDs and noncooperation with UN inspectors made Iraq such a huge threat, it has to be asked why Egypt and Israel, for example, were not attacked. • 19. An In-Depth Analysis Of Gender Issues In Cosmopolitan... Introduction Traditionally gender has been viewed as a simple binary category with certain dichotomies that exist between the masculine and feminine. The categorization is borne from the belief that because men and women are biologically different that is, different sexes, there will be a natural difference in the way they behave within the society (language use being an important aspect of this behavior). There is little evidence that this belief is based on anything other than stereotyping. Just by virtue that women and men are biologically different, the society believes that the men and women should behave different also and that each should be treated differently. The natural belief that men and women are different has led to the rise ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An essential aspect of this issue of Cosmopolitan is that its head editor was a woman, Helen Gurley Brown, which indicates a female vision in the production of this magazine (Gurley Brown 1965). Nonetheless, all the other important positions for the magazine, from the president of Hearst Magazines, Richard E. Deems, to the head of Fiction, William Carrington Guy, were all men (Gurley Brown 1965). This information paints an interesting picture, because of Gurley Brown s position at the helm while valuable, still had to accommodate these other male visions on the magazine. The rest of the positions are mostly filled by women, Fashion and Features, Merchandising, Copy, Beauty, Staff Manager, and almost all of the Editorial Staff (Gurley Brown 1965). • 20. The Effects Of Radiation On Public Health The Effects of Radiation in the Environment on Public Health Introduction Radiation in the environment is widespread and a necessary process for the existence of life. We encounter it from natural sources like the sun or from modern technology such as computed tomography better known as CT scan, and nuclear power plants. Radiation from sunlight is essential but too much of it can be harmful, just as the use of radiation in CT scans. Computed tomography can provide lifesaving information about disease but can also cause disease. One of the topics that every so often pops up in the news is radioactive waste management and protecting the public against the hazards of radioactive waste from power plants and other facilities that produce radioactive waste. People want to know where is this waste disposed and/or stored and who has access this material. Many of the concerns center around the dangers of radioactive leaks and exposure; consequently, most people do not want this material in their neighborhood. Another concern is the use of waste material as nuclear weapons by terrorists. The disposal and managing of radioactive waste is extremely complicated, not only because of the dangers hazardous waste poses, but also because of the strict compliance the management of this waste must undergo. If radioactive hazardous waste is compliant with the regulations of all the governing federal agencies, it does not pose an environmental public health risk. This paper will discuss ... • 22. The Use Of Light In The Film Citizen Kane INTRODUCTION In films a big concept has always been the use of lights. The use of lights in films helps create a meaning about what the scene is about and at times reveals a little more. In cinematography there is different types of lighting such as: three point lighting, fill light, key light, high key and low key lighting, top or under, lighting and many more. In the times when films were black and white the use of light is not easily visible. The use of black and white still helped portray the meaning behind many of the scenes, whether the scene got lighter or darker.A film that was successful in using white and black was Citizen Kane by Orson Welles. A film that was in color was the Godfather directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The use of lighting reflects within color because it gives the audience more to look at and it becomes very noticeable when the light changes for a specific scene. The use of lighting styles is necessary in films to bring attention to the scene and to be able to produce an interesting film. The director of Citizen Kane had the choice of making the film black and white or color but eventually decided to create it in black and white. In an interview about the film Citizen Kane a critic acknowledged the use of light and said Exploiting light and shadow inventively to express meaning and establish a desired atmosphere made Orson Welles Citizen Kane a significant historical event that impacted both audiences and film genre in many ways. The Sacraments Portrayed In Les Misérables The Sacraments Portrayed in Les Misérables God gives us unconditional forgiveness each day even if we do not go to reconciliation to be forgiven of our sins. Forgiveness works both ways in the eyes of God. In order to receive full mercy and forgives from God we need to go to Reconciliation and properly be forgiven from our sins. Jean Valjean knew he had sinned and turned away from God but he refused to go and be forgiven of his sins. God had given Jean Valjean forgiveness since the day he sinned and Jean finally realized he had been forgiven since the beginning after all the life lessons he went through during his lifetime. Jean Valjean finally realized God had given him the gift of forgives from the beginning and knew he had to find away to fully turn his life back around. • 26. Characters in the General Prologue to The Canterbury... The Canterbury Tales are essentially a Chaucerian satire; the author sets out to deliberately upset the social order present at the time and proceeds to mock the faults innate in the characters. Chaucer gives a compressed view of characters such as the Knight and the Monk; in their descriptions, a preview of the kind of stories we can expect from these people is given. Take for example the Miller; his physical description alleviates him as a thick brute with a filthy mouth that was `moost of sin and harlotries , sufficed to say that his tale is one of adultery and sinful behaviour. However, Chaucer is not always as straightforward as this in presenting the pilgrims to us. His effective policy in unhinging the social hierarchy involves two ... The agenda of the Knight s conquests are put into questioning. `Throughout the Prologue, one set of values is being opposed to another with the most deliberate though subtle, craft: generosity and charity are set against greed and self indulgence....honesty against thievery and double dealing (Major, p.161). • 27. A Brief Note On Peer And Peer ( P2p ) Peer to peer (P2P) networking is a network of computers that have the capability of being either a client or a server. Furthermore, P2P is the use of your own personal computer for the purpose of more than just basic client only tasks. Peers on a network are able to share resources, storage space, and processing power directly available to others hosts on the network without the need of a centralized communications model like the client/server model. Each user of the network is both a supplier and a consumer of the resources provided on the network. Because peers are not connected to a central server it removes the risk of losing data through a central server crash. One of the most widely known forms of Peer to Peer networking is simply instant messaging. This is P2P in its simplest form. AOL, Facebook, MSN, are all examples of software that uses Peer to Peer networking in order to allow users to message one another in real time. The goal of P2P is to make things faster and safer, so it makes sense that many companies have moved to implementing instant messaging as a standard of communication. Another use of Peer to Peer networking is for illegal purposes. Many of us have heard of the widely famous software Napster. It was originally known as the pioneer behind peer to peer file sharing. Napster was commonly used for the purpose free music downloading. Users from all around would come and upload free music, but the problem with this was copyright infringement. Many ... Although the controversy still remains to this day about whether or not she is a revolutionary feminist, she is clearly ahead of her time. In that time period, an ordinary woman who portrayed herself the same way that Alison does would have been looked upon negatively seen as a harlot even. Seeing how Alison conducts herself with such confidence and lustiness , I believe that she is truly a feminist. • 31. How Technology Has Impacted Our Society I. Introduction Technology and its constant advancements have integrated itself into every aspect of our world. Music has now become a place for the facilitation of experiences through technology in our society. However, the monetization of music through technology has created a far more difficult experience for the fans of music in all genres. In reference to technology, the term streaming is defined as playing continuously as data is sent to a computer over the Internet , (Webster). The internet and its streaming capabilities is an amazing tool used to connect the fans, almost instantly, to the music; however, it also puts the content at risk due to the possible technological issues, exclusivity rights, and digital piracy. One of the biggest reasons why technology has been impacted our society is because it has made itself useful in our daily lives. Internet streaming technology has impacted our entertainment by delivering audio and video very fast. So how does streaming work? Internet streaming technology is created through a collaboration of three components the server, data stream, and decoder. Servers are used to store information or data in its memory. When a consumer streams music online they are receiving cable or satellite signals from the server to their device. Next, once your data has received it has to be decoded back into audio and video. This continuous flow of information is known as streaming. II. Technological Issues According to Murphy s Law, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rip in Rip Van Winkle, Editha and George in Editha and Major Molineux in My Kinsman, Major Molineux are all victims of cultural expectations. Let me start with Rip Van Winkle. This story actually takes place in two different time periods. Before Rip fell asleep, he was living in the pre colonial era of the United States. He was expected to work and take care of his family. She writes a letter telling him that she loves him but the man I marry must love his country first of all. . . (1448) George is expected to love his country above all and want to fight to protect it. He does not believe in the cause of the Spanish American War. He is torn between his love for Editha and his disgust for the war. George signs up for the war in a drunken stupor and still has the presence of mind to mock the war with witty sarcasm as he walks the street near Editha s house. Editha does not even listen to what he is saying; she just hands him the letter and tells him to read it after he starts. She could not be happier.
