Anna Quindlen s Commencement Speech At Mount Holyoke College
Mount Holyoke College Commencement Speech Anna Quindlen s commencement speech at Mount
Holyoke College is an inspiring monologue about marching to the beat of your own drum. She is
trying to make people rethink the whole way that they have been living and realizing all the times that
they chose to be normal instead of taking their own path through life. Quindlen uses everything in her
power to appeal to everyone who could be listening giving many examples and scenarios explaining
different situations where individuality could have occurred. Throughout the whole speech Quindlen
talks about how being perfect is what we all strive for, yet no matter how hard we try it can never be
accomplished. Quindlen is very smart to talk about such a hard topic for so many people to talk about
and turn it into a very inspiring speech about being yourself and straying from the social norm. In the
beginning of the speech, she described to us that, when she was younger, she did everything on her
power to be perfect including studying, doing well in school, being friendly, but not too friendly and
sitting on a housing council. Later on in the speech, she was elaborating on how she was able to break
away from what everyone else was doing and rise above everyone else because of this. She ... Show

She used a stern yet eye opening tone throughout the whole speech. The was Quindlen worded siren
line made it very apparent that she is trying to spark change. She was stern to get the point across and
make people believe she knows what she is talking about and not some random person who doesn t
know what they are talking about. The way she described the reason for change was very unique
because everyone is always talking about change yet never had an solid ideas on how to do it.
Quindlen did, she defined the issue then came up with a solution, I believe that this a big first step in

Alfred Hitchcock s Elements Of Suspense In Psychodo
Busayo Oladipupo
Professor K. Lyon
Cinema 101 01
Dec 13th, 2017.
Final Paper
Alfred Hitchcock was a renowned film director known for his elements of suspense and psychological
thrillers. His most popular work psycho uses the story of a phoenix secretary (Marion Crane) who
embezzled money from a client to unveil the psycho in the male character (Norman Bates). The
success of the film is greatly relied on Hitchcock s unique techniques in creating tension and suspense.
Elements that contributed to the success of the film include motifs and parallels, and perspective used.
The most prominent motifs in psycho are birds, eyes and mirrors. Hitchcock uses birds to support the
theme of duality in the film. In one critical scene where Norman ... Show more content on

These instances lead to eyes taking significance in the film, and implicates the audience on the note
that the film is showing what should not be seen. Unlike Norman s other victims that were not
detailed, Mrs. Bates and Marion s eyes depict a watchful one that threatens Norman therefore leading
to their deaths. Mirrors were also used throughout the film to enhance the theme of duality. After
Marion stole the money, Hitchcock recurrently compares her with her reflection (like in the used car
lot), even though she rarely looks at it. Marion s refusal to look at own reflection in the mirror
underscores that she is going to keep going in the path that she has chosen and not look back. Marion s
denial of her reflection led her to the Bates Motel where she met with her death.
The shift in narration of Psycho has been a topic worth discussing in the world of film making. Most
films employ a system of restricted narration, which conveys external events as well as the
knowledge, thoughts and feelings of one or two major characters without the intervention of an
explicit narrator. But there is a significant shift of narration from restricted to omniscient that
Hitchcock used to keep the audience engaged with the film. The early scenes and exposition of the
film is focused on Marion. The audience see things from the perspective of Marion her theft, her
relationships as an employee and as a woman. Different point of view shots highlights that the film is
focused on Marion s

Viva La Vida Coldplay Analysis
Throughout history, there have been countless accounts of empires and kingdoms that have fallen due
to power and corruption. Kings and rulers, who were once able to break all laws without any
consequences, became shadows of their former selves and were forced to be remembered as failures.
The song Viva la Vida by Coldplay shows first hand account of a king, Louis XVI, the last monarch of
France, who had fallen prey to the destruction that power can bring. Listeners get a memoir of this
king who went from being a the pillar of society to a man whose legacy was tarnished by corruption.
Absolute power is able to corrupt even the noblest of hearts and, through the use of metaphor,
Coldplay has shown the regression of a king who s was thought to have everything a man wants. The
narrator is a wealthy king who is used to ruling over others. In the first line of the song Being apart of
the monarch, he was born into a life of luxury, never wanting for anything. In the line One minute I
held the key we see that he once was able to walk with his head held high, holding all the power to do
with as he wished. He was the king and, besides God, there was no one above him. By the line Next
the walls were closed on me the narrator shows lines show exactly how far from grace ... Show more

stories of Sodom and Gamorah, in which Lot s wife was turned into a pillar of salt for disobeying the

away by the wave because it was built on sand. As the narrator reflects on his life, he realizes that his
empire, the source of his power and wealth, was built on egocentrism and foolishness and destined to

Short Hills New Jersey Essay
Short Hills New Jersey real estate is one of the most sought after for many good reasons, one of them
is that it is very close to New York City. In fact, many residents work in Manhattan. It helps a lot that
from early on, the village has always had a good connection to the city of New York by means of
transportation.
The founder of Short Hills New Jersey, a millionaire named Stewart Hartshorn had the vision and
foresight to transform his rolling 1,552 acre property into a model village with sophisticated planning.
For example, Hartshorn would have a new railroad station built in the Short Hills, in addition to the
railroad connection between Hoboken, New Jersey and New York City already in existence.
Hartshorn s foresight with regards to Short Hills New Jersey real estate is rather like Bugsy Seagel s
transformation of a portion of the Nevada desert into the thriving Las Vegas gambling resort. The only
difference is that the former envisioned a peaceful community with plenty of greenery, marked by the
so called Short Hills Park that continues to uplift the image of the area to this day. The opening of the

who starred in the blockbuster Hollywood movie The Devil Wears Prada opposite Meryl Streep.
Hathaway, who spent her high school years in the village, also co hosted the 2011 Oscar Awards
ceremonies recently. While real estate sales are suffering a slump brought about by a depressed U.S.
economy, Short Hills New Jersey real estate is still doing moderately well. Although the market can be
characterized as cautious at this time, the New York state of mind or connection, coupled with the
presence of corporate America s elite in the area, may still be counted on to give it the boost that it

David Sedaris Chipped Beef
Sometimes in life, we dream about unimaginable lives we could have, this causes us to disconnect
from our reality. In Chipped Beef , David Sedaris contrasts his fantasy with his reality to show how
living in a fantasy world disconnects you from your family. Throughout his memoir, Sedaris
demonstrates how his fantasy disconnects him from his reality, how he portrays his reality in a
negative manner, and how he loses his relationship with his family. In the beginning of this memoir
Sedaris uses his fantasy to show how disconnected he is from his reality and family by using rhetorical
devices and strategies like a mocking tone and analogy. First off, Sedaris describes his unthinkable
dreams when he states, I m thinking of asking the servants to wax my change before placing it in the

It s important to have clean money. Sedaris starts off this piece by making an extremely improbable
statement about waxing his change. This statement is ridiculous because no normal person makes their
servants wax their change. In addition, it shows how disconnected he is from reality by making these
ridiculous overstatements, which come across as humorous. These humorous statements immediately
get the audience engaged in this piece. Furthermore, Sedaris boasts about his fantasy life by using an
analogy when he proclaims, Because we are so smart, my parents and I are able to see through people
as if they were made of hard, clear plastic. The analogy that Sedaris uses here is very affective by
stating how he thinks how smart and intelligent his fantasy family is by making them able to control
the rest of the people around them by being able to see through them like clear plastic, which is
impossible in reality. In the end of Sedaris s fantasy dreams, he

Case Analysis Of Sabmiller
The company s strategy of focusing on local brands has produced positive results in terms of volume
sales performance in African and Latin American markets.
SABMiller s strong presence in Middle East and Africa and Latin America, and high CAGR for the
2013 2018 period, is expected to strengthen its position globally and support its strategy of local
branding. In emerging markets, consumer tastes are much more diverse and localised, and SABMiller
responds to this via the development of provincial beers where product distribution is limited and
illicit trade is significant.
SABMiller s significant presence in mid priced and premium lager supports its top ranking position in
various African and Latin American markets. However, the company is losing out on the potential
growth from other categories and the potential of brand equity to be gained from developing a wider
range of beer alternatives. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Leon Trotsky
Trotsky was born Lev Davidovich Bronstein on November 7, 1879, in what is today known as
Ukraine. He was the fifth child of a wealthy farmer, David Leontyevich Bronstein, and Anna
Bronstein. The family was ethnically Jewish but not religious. At the age of nine, Trotsky was sent to
Odessa to attend school, and as Deutscher points out in his biography, Odessa was then a bustling
cosmopolitan port city, very unlike the typical Russian city of the time. This environment contributed
to the development of the young man s international outlook. Trotsky was always quick tempered,
arrogant and a stubborn believer in intellectual solutions. In 1896 Trotsky at the age of 17 moved to
Nikolayev to continue studying. In his time there he attended ... Show more content on

Basically this was everything against what the tsarist state were now doing In January 1907, Trotsky
escaped Siberia and once again made his way to London, where he attended the 5th Congress of the
RSDLP. In October, he moved to Vienna where he often took part in the activities of the Austrian
Social Democratic Party and, occasionally, of the German Social Democratic Party, for seven years.
He started his own newspaper in 1908, the Pravda, but the distance from the Mensheviks and
Bolsheviks left him without any organizational anchor. Back in Russia the outbreak of WW1 tore
apart the second international as many of the social democratic parties lined up with their own ruling
classes. Trotsky attended the Zimmerwald Conference of anti war socialists in September 1915 and
aimed for a middle course between those who, like Martov, would stay within the Second
International at any cost and those who, like Lenin, would break with the Second International and
form a Third International. The conference adopted the middle line proposed by Trotsky. Trotsky
draws up the Zimmerwald manifesto denouncing the war, which is the nucleus of the third
international. Trotsky moved to France on November 19, 1914, as a war correspondent for the
Kievskaya Mysl (radical Ukrainian newspaper). Trotsky was expelled from France as a suspect alien

My Virtual Child Paper
My Virtual Child Paper
My virtual child covers physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development at several age levels.
This gave me an opportunity to visualize the whole child at various points in development. I raised a
virtual child from birth to 18 years of age. Each virtual child has a unique set of characteristics at
birth, some of which were influenced by how I answered the assessment I completed when I first
logged onto My Virtual Child. These characteristics gradually emerged and affected his behavior and
development.
My child was a boy so I decided to name him Wolfgang. Wolfgang was born about four weeks

Berk mentions in his book that parent s who resolve conflicts with reason, instead of physical
punishment, have children that are more likely to be socially mature and well developed intellectually
(Berk 2010). Instead, we would put Wolfgang in a time out, induction, and used punishment by
removal (Berk 2010). I made sure that my partner was included when making parental decisions
because I did not want Wolfgang to start favoring one parent over the other.
When my partner and I decided to get back together, he started doing better in school (except math),
but he still got into fights at school, so my partner and I decided to talk to him about social skills and
taught him techniques he could use when he started to get upset or frustrated.
I m very happy that Wolfgang has a diverse view on gender roles (Berk 2010). I was nervous at first
because he did not seem to have any interest in Brianna. I feel as if my partner and I splitting, for the
short time we did, caused this effect on Wolfgang. When he was about 3, my partner and I had
Brianna. Wolfgang was a bit distant at the beginning, but he includes his sister while playing with
other kids and he tolerates girls better than other boys do. He enjoys playing the role as the big brother
and taking care of his sister. If he was not playing with her, he was playing make believe by himself. I
knew this was a good sign. I thought that this would be strengthening his mental abilities, like

My Experience At The Campus Hotel
I know it was wrong but anytime I saw a car drive up to the parking garage I always anticipated tips. I

my assistance which meant there was a possibility I would be tipped. It s weird how in just a year my
views on tipping have changed. I guess there s just something about stepping in someone s shoes to

m already getting paid by my employer. Nonetheless I accepted it gratefully.
Towards the middle of summer the hotel started to pick up and it got very busy; sport games, religious

happened continuously, my genuine look of surprise faded into a fake look of surprise. I eventually

Rangers Persuasive Essay
Let me begin before everyone jumps me by emphasizing this in no way reflects the two teams win
loss records. The Rangers are far (far, far, far, far) and away a better baseball team than the Houston
Astros in almost every statistical category. As a team the Rangers hit .262 compared to a brutal .240
for the Astros. Rangers on base percentage .323 to the Astros .299. The Rangers scored 730 times to
an Astros 610. Joe Nathan alone just about had as many saves as Astros had wins. See where I m
going with this? The Rangers are on paper a very solid baseball team while the Astros are just another
doormat for the rest of Major League Baseball to stomp all over.
So why can t the Rangers take the next step? One year after losing to the St. Louis Cardinals in the
World Series, they lost to the Baltimore Orioles in the one game Wild Card playoff while this year
they completely missed the playoffs all together. They are built to win a championship now. They

agree with not spending money in free agency, the Astros are doing the right thing. The Astros also

Online File Sharing and Internet Piracy
The United States of America is a free country, then why shouldn t the internet be free? Why should
we have restrictions placed on what we can and cannot do on the internet? Every day, millions of users
share files on the internet through numerous online sources. Whether they download music, movies, or
software, online file sharing can give people access to a plentiful amount of information. These files
are often free and easily accessible by anyone. The practice of distributing or providing access to
digitally stored information represents file sharing (Peer to Peer File Sharing and Copyright

At no cost or free access to any information brings many benefits to users through online piracy. When
anyone downloads a program from an online source they use it as a preview or free trial when none
are available. People do this in order to see what they want is worth the purchase or not. For example:
Someone has no clue what word processing program to buy and he or she does not want to just waste
the money on a word processing program he or she cannot use. This is where internet piracy can come
in to play and benefit him or her greatly. He or she can just download the word processing programs
they have been looking at from an online source to use as a free trial, find the best one, and later buy
it.
Have you ever let a friend borrow a CD, a book, or a movie? The borrowing of copyright materials
like music, books, or movies is an act of colloquially known as piracy. Internet piracy is the borrowing
of files including music through online sites where one person uploads it and many others help
distribute the file. Music files were some of the first types of files to be pirated. Music files are a big
portion of all of the files pirated over the internet. File sharing of music leads to a lot of benefits for
the music industry, record companies, and the artists involved in music. Free exposure through online
sharing of music will benefit the artist, the public, and the music industry (Torr).

Pro Choice Vs. Pro Life
Pro Choice vs. Pro Life: Abortion Should Remain Legal Jaelyn Evans Atlanta Metropolitan State
University The controversy surrounding abortion has been long debated since the Roe v Wade case
(1973) as pro life advocates and pro choice advocates go neck to neck on whether the process should
be banned or remain legal. According to APA (American Psychological Association), abortion is the
medical or surgical termination of a pregnancy and is one of the oldest, most common and most
controversial medical procedures . To be Pro Life means to be against the termination of a fetus; one
who is not in favor of the practice. Pro life advocates believe a woman should continue the pregnancy
and deliver the baby no matter the circumstance. Pro choice represents those who believe the woman
deserves a choice to carry the baby or have an abortion. Although the 1973 Roe vs Wade case
legalized abortion, abortion is still currently a much heated debate in America as the surgical
procedure is possibly on the verge of becoming illegalized. However, abortion should definitely
remain legal for various reasons such as individual freedom, victim protection, life opportunities,
failed contraception, and it is not fair for the government to make such crucial decisions for a woman s
life. Pro life advocates argue that personhood begins at conception, though quite contrarily, Sarah Fox
published an article to TheBrainBank science blog in defense of her argument that a fetus does not

The Influence Of Religion On Western Society Essay

Impact of Religion Assignment
The Influence of Religion on Western Society Religion has significantly affected the development of
western civilizations and societies. All throughout the history we have covered in class, religion has
played a key and essential role in defining the types of cultures within a society a belief or faith in a
spiritual, also a divine power can add significance and true meaning to many of the western people s
lives. Religion is essentially the force that binds a race or a religious group together, and comes with a
sense of personal identity to a higher figure, God. Three specific and most commonly known religions
of Western Society we have focused on in class have been Judaism, Islam and Christianity. Ultimately,
all three religions have a common belief: the religious belief that this universe came into existence,
and controlled and governed by one single God. The history of Judaism began in the Bronze Ages in
the Middle East when God promised a leader by the name of Abraham that he would be the father of
great people if he did as God told him,

religion. Isaac then married and the third most significant figure in Judaism figure was then born,
Jacob. With the founding of the religion being stated, Judaism was on of the earliest and significant

In this sense, the project leader must be technically savvy. Applying a scientific systematic formula to
the project provides for effective and efficient use of resources. Successful projects, those that deliver
value to the organization, use proven Project Life Cycle models such as the standard ISO model.
(Greer, 1999). Following a cookie cutter approach such the ISO standard is a very scientific
management style which requires discipline from the manager. While a rigid management style may
get line items checked off, it can sometimes lead to failure as the end user may be intimidated by the
strict discipline. For instance, City Hospital in the U.K. had a disastrous IT deployment of an
automated system. A post study found that while the contractor Oracle, had done the proper step of
getting end users involved in the analysis, the users supplied inaccurate data which was used in the
development phase and ended up as flaws in the final product. Various reasons were given for the
flawed input such as; hurried users, wrong users and users embarrassed to admit they didn t
understand the system. (Brown, 1998) Following a strict systematic guideline is sometimes self
defeating. That is, leaders and participants can act to avoid failure but don t for fear of deviating from
the plan. (Brown, 1998). It s not just rigid planning that reduces project success, it could be the

Differences Between Philip II And Elizabeth I
Philip II and Elizabeth I are two of the most important figures during the 16th century. Philip had an
easier path to his reign because of his father and this gave him the power to enforce his will among his
subjects and resistance came along. Elizabeth s upbringing to the throne was more difficult than
Philips and it led her to develop stronger ambitions and values with her subjects. Both figures were
similar as they had passive aggressive attitudes towards their military strategies because different
implications of the times leading up to the Armada forced Philip and Elizabeth to make tough
decisions. Primary sources of Philip and Elizabeth will be presented in this paper to show the prior
similarities and differences of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was because Elizabeth tried to shift the responsibility onto the signatories of the Bond of
Association, presumably on the grounds that they had declared their own right to carry out the death
sentence against any person found guilty. Elizabeth wanted to push aside her responsibility for the
death of Mary to someone else, so Spain would understand and maybe not invade England. This
showed that Elizabeth s strategies during her reign were passive, although, she still proved to be a
leader who would protect her country from the Spanish by assembling a powerful naval fleet.
Elizabeth showed leadership qualities to her people and they looked up to her and that is why she was
a wiser leader to her subjects than Philip. Philip showed passive aggressiveness during the Spanish
Armada preparation because he was indecisive with his strategies. He would do his business at the San
Lorenzo de Escorial in a secret office. Philip did not want to pursue the war, but he felt that it was
inevitable. He was not sure what strategies would work. He would follow advice from fellow leaders,
but he was indecisive on what land or naval strategies to use. He knew that the English had a powerful
naval base, so this made his decision

Characteristics Of Hernan Cortes
During the 1500s Hernan Cortes traveled to the Aztec civilizations of Mesoamerica, and more in
particular, Tenochtitlan with the mindset to take on the land of the natives. When he got there, he was
uneasy with what he saw, which is evident in the letters that Cortes wrote to Charles V. It
happened...that a Spaniard saw an Indian...eating a piece of flesh taken from the body of an Indian
who had been killed (Cortes). Cortes viewed the Aztecs living in Tenochtitlan as completely barbaric
because they practiced human sacrifice, which was cannibalism and were polytheistic. Despite Cortes
describing the people of Tenochtitlan as barbarous , he was able to find positive qualities in them
because he saw their knowledge, technological advances, and independence.
One way that the Aztecs showed their knowledge was through the design of Tenochtitlan. The people
of Tenochtitlan built the city on an island, surrounding a lake. Cortes applauded the Aztecs for this
aspect. This great city of Tenochtitlan is built on the salt lake...it has four approaches by means of
artificial causeways... (Cortes) This was a smart move for the Aztecs since they had an endless supply
of water. Built on an island on Lake Texcoco, it had a system of canals and causeways that supplied
the hundreds of thousands of people who lived there (Jarus).
Additionally, Cortes admired the new technological advances that the Aztecs invented. Since
Tenochtitlan was built overtop of a lake, people of the civilization had to adapt to having a lack of
farmland. They created an innovative way to create farmland, called chinampas. The Aztecs made
giant reed mats and placed them on top of the water. They made a fence around the mat and placed
mud, fertilizer, and rotten vegetables on it. Then trees were planted on all sides of the chinampa. The
trees grew very quickly and their roots held the soil to keep it from flowing away. The Aztecs planted
corn, tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and squash. The plants roots would grow to the bottom of the lake
so they would have an endless supply of water (Tenochtitlan). Doing this gave Tenochtitlan a great
amount of food, without having to sacrifice their supply of water or land.
Lastly, Cortes found that the

Cell Life Cycle Essay
Healthy cells within living organisms are constantly undergoing a process that is marked by change
called the life cycle of the cell. While every species is different, all cells within them follow close to
the same pattern of life and division. As listed in the table above, the steps of the cell life cycle are
marked by 1. The first growth phase, 2. A developmental checkpoint, 3. The synthesis of genetic
information, 4. A second growth phase, 5. Another developmental checkpoint, and 6. Mitosis, or
division into two new cells. The first growth phase is pretty self explanatory: the cell is just beginning
its life and must have time and nourishment to develop its organelles. It is twice the length of the G2
phase and will continue until chemical receptors within the cell clear it through step 2, which is the
checkpoint. This checkpoint is carried out by the cell s chemical receptors and is a way for the cell to
check its surface area and compare that to its volume. If the ratio is where it is supposed to be (these
values vary for each cell type and each organism), then the cell will move on to step 3: Synthesis. Step
3 is when a cell will begin to replicate its genetic information, or chromatids. These chromatids are
bound together by a protein called a centromere and are collectively known as a chromosome. After
the synthesis of genetic information takes place, the cell moves on to stage 4: G2. This phase is where
the cell begins to replicate its organelles so that the newly

Morelia s Definition Of Sportsmanship
Many people are excellent at showing sportsmanship and teamwork while playing a sport or in their
everyday life. Morelia Sanchez was definitely one of them. Morelia played lacrosse in her sophomore
year at Kennedy High School. I interviewed her about her definition of sportsmanship and teamwork,
and also how she uses them in her everyday life. Morelia s definition of sportsmanship is to make an
effort and give it your all (and hopefully win). Knowing how to lose is also important when playing
any sport she says as we all experience losing at one point or another. Teamwork also plays a big role
when playing any sport. Morelia explained that teamwork to her is getting along with her teammates,

Abortion and Disability
With reference to abortion, examine and comment upon the issues that emerge from keeping up with
developments in medical ethics, whilst maintaining religious principles and/or ethical values. (Total
for Question 1 = 50 marks)
There are several issues that arise when it comes to the development in medical ethics whilst also
maintaining religious principles and ethical values. The development of medical knowledge has
allowed for humans to practice different ways in helping society. But these new discoveries have
found to clash with religious principles and ethical values. This can be related to the topic of abortion
as it goes against monotheistic religious teachings.

Living in a world set up and built for able bodied people, it s difficult for a disabled person to be
brought up and adapt to carry out even the most simplest of everyday tasks. Aborting a disabled foetus
may not intentionally be biologically discriminating, but instead, weighing up the consequences of
continuing with the pregnancy until the stage of giving birth, taking into account what life will be like
for the foetus in the future.
To conclude, I believe that abortion should only be considered concerning the best interest of the
foetus because that is what is seen to be ethically right (by ending the possibility of suffering and low
quality of life that the foetus may have to endure if it was to be born). Situation Ethics, devised by
Joseph Fletcher could be a religious stance as to why the allowance of abortion for disabled foetuses
may be in accordance to religious principles also. For example, dependent on the severity of a
disability of a foetus, it might be reasonable to suggest aborting a foetus because it would be the most
loving thing to do. Agape love, the kind of love Jesus had for everyone in which this theory teaches us
to practice.

The Courage to Differ Essay example
Life has many instances in which one must choose whether to stand apart from the group and disagree
with his peers or to nod vehemently in agreement and quickly seek security as a part of the group.
Many choose to follow the crowd because of the fear of rejection. They hang tightly to the bumper of
the car of acceptance not worrying of the cuts and scrapes they are suffering as they struggle to hold
on. Others painfully watch the car drive over the horizon and reassure themselves continually that it
was worth it to stay behind. When we are older and look upon our past, we will realize that the
courage to dissent or assent during our lifetimes can cause us either regret or contentment.
The effects of being swayed into assent along with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Meanwhile a boy confidently stepped into the chambers of the king and boldly said to the king Let no
man s heart fail because of him; your servant will go out and fight with this Philistine (Holy Bible, 1

and amused by the boy s matter of fact attitude the king responded You are not able to go against this

him to go home. As he walked by the cowardly soldiers he shrugged off put downs thrown at him

Fountainhead Essay Outline
Ayn Rand, the author of the book Fountainhead, had very strong and insightful beliefs. One such
belief, as quoted by Ayn Rand, pertains to the idea of people that do not follow trends. She believes
that throughout history there have been people that decided to step off of the path that everyone was
on, in order to create their vision that no one has had before. The second someone does something
different many people start to think they are crazy and do not think their ideas are practical. Although

Because of Disney Channel s reputation of being mostly a kids tv channel, Miley Cyrus was seen as a

Economic Recession In Air Canada
However, despite the correct decision to privatize, the company continued to have troubles. The
financials of the newly privatized airline were unreflective of the successful stock offerings. Air
Canada reported losses of C$74 million in 1990 and C$218 million in 1991, and it reported that it had
nearly two million fewer passengers in 1991 than in the previous year. These failures were blamed on
the effects of the economic recession and the decrease in travel due to the war in the Persian Gulf.
However, it was clear that competition with international carriers was a major cause. To elaborate, the
airline industry is considered to be a cyclical industry, meaning that it is directly affected by the

reasoning was quite negative. Air Canada has been accused of relying on the government to intervene

former Air Canada director of employee relations. He states that the idea that the Canadian economy

bailouts. In 2009, Air Canada made a deal with Ottawa addressing their pension deficit. The
government promised to lower mandatory contributions until 2021, allowing the company to

Rhetorical Analysis Of George W. Bush
The Iraq war was an issue that started in 2003 that had taken over America. Citizens were conflicted
with sending their own to a foreign country to solve an issue that had nothing to do with their own
nation. Four years later into the war, Senator Barack Obama and his constitutes attend a meeting
where Obama was to give a floor speech to George W. Bush. During the speech, Obama expresses the
use of Aristotle s Appeals, logos, pathos, and ethos, along with Kairos in order to convince the
president to pull their troops out of Iraq. One of the main rhetorical devices Obama uses throughout
the speech is pathos. He starts his argument off with a description of an ex soldier. He explains how he
is blind and how he has lost control of one arm due to the war. He follows up talking about his family
and how they adapt to dad s new lifestyle. Obama starts the speech off appealing to pathos. He creates
an emotional connection between his listeners and our Iraqi soldiers. He also creates a sense of
imagery by saying, Too many have returned from Iraq with broken bodies and shattered nerves and
wounds that even the best care may not heal... come home shrouded in the flag... moms and dads and

Reflection Paper On Fitness
Welcome to Fitness In my life so far, there have been very few instances where I honestly thought
about giving up. I like to believe I am a very strong willed and sometimes stubborn person. I also
believe everyone has moments where they reach their limit and must decide whether or not to raise the
bar. My first day of track practice was one of those moments. I don t believe I fully understood what I
was getting myself into that day. I walked through the gym door nervous and filled with a mixture of
anxiety and excitement. The first thing I noticed was how many people there were. The entire gym
had people circling the perimeter. I mean it was insane. It felt like everyone I had ever known to be in
sports was there. People I had never even said a word to had managed find to their way to the gym. I
was out of my league and out of my mind. I couldn t do this. I m going to make a fool of myself.
Everyone here is conditioned for this and they ve done this before. They know what is going to
happen. I was standing there, looking around like an idiot. The first person I recognize and actually
talk to is Franky. I attempt to casually sneak my way over to him. I feel like a fish out of water. I
decide that if I ever get confused as to what to do I must have a plan. Ask Franky. That was the best I
could come up with. The warm ups and stretching weren t so bad. I was left out of breath from the
quicker ones, but I felt I would recover in time for the real workout. When coach shouted

tension between the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics during the

ideals believed by each; the will of communism spread vs the will of capitalism to contain it; the
anxiety of nuclear war; and the presidency of Harry S. Truman. The main sources will include Stalin s

intentions of Stalinist Russia and the conflict the USSR brought to the Eastern and Western
hemispheres. This source is valuable as it gives an objective, expansive overview of the Stalinist era
of the Soviet Union. Its contents include details of Stalin s actions and quotations of pained Russians.

▶ History
The origin of mangos is northeast India and Myanmar (formerly Burma) traces back to 4000 B.C.
It is believed that mango was transferred to East Asia about 400 B.C by Buddhist monks.
In East Africa, they have been cultivated since 10th century, in Philippines, in the 15th century. Also,
they were introduced by Persian traders to the Middle East and East Africa in the 10th century.
After discovery of new world (the American Continent), mango seeds were brought by Portuguese
traders to their African and Brazilian colonies in the 16th century. The name mango was adopted by
the Portuguese derived from Malay manga or Tamil mankay (man : mango tree + kay : fruit). (Online
Etymology Dictionary, N/A)
It is said that mangoes started to be cultivated in the American colonies in the 17th century. At that
time, mangoes should be pickled since there was no method to preserve. (mapsofworld, 2011),
(Shortnotes of History, 2011)
In 1750, Puerto Rico started to grow mango.
In 1782, mango was introduced to Jamaica. (Mango Maven, N/A)
In the 19th century, the mango was cultivated in Mexico.
In the 1830 s, it started to be grown in Florida, and in the 1880 s in California.

What Is The Psychological, Social And Cultural Aspects Of...
From the time we are born, we are taught the correct way to act within society. We are taught the rules
of conduct of society and we learn to follow them in order to be socially normal. The second we are
born or even before we are born we are determined a gender. The rest of our life and the way we are
expected to act revolves around that gender. Our gender shapes who we are expected to be and shapes
an image in our parents head of who they want us to be. Gender plays a key role throughout our life, it
is defined as the psychological, social and cultural aspects of masculinity and femininity (butler
sweet,c,2017). Masculinity and femininity have been standardized into their own stereotypes. For
example, masculine is known as aggression, competitive, brave, etc. While feminine is known as
sensitive, weak, nurturing, etc. Because of these traits and these stereotypes masculinity holds a higher
power over femininity. Therefore, when the parents have the child and they find out what gender they
are they automatically uphold them and raise them according to these standards. This begins to refer to
gender socialization which is the process by which we learn the rules and conduct the behavior of
masculinity and femininity (butler sweet,c,2017). Meaning, that from a young age, we learn the
correct way to act within society, including the correct way to act according to our biological gender.
Once our parents know if we are a boy or a girl they decorate our room a certain way,

  • 2. Anna Quindlen s Commencement Speech At Mount Holyoke College Mount Holyoke College Commencement Speech Anna Quindlen s commencement speech at Mount Holyoke College is an inspiring monologue about marching to the beat of your own drum. She is trying to make people rethink the whole way that they have been living and realizing all the times that they chose to be normal instead of taking their own path through life. Quindlen uses everything in her power to appeal to everyone who could be listening giving many examples and scenarios explaining different situations where individuality could have occurred. Throughout the whole speech Quindlen talks about how being perfect is what we all strive for, yet no matter how hard we try it can never be accomplished. Quindlen is very smart to talk about such a hard topic for so many people to talk about and turn it into a very inspiring speech about being yourself and straying from the social norm. In the beginning of the speech, she described to us that, when she was younger, she did everything on her power to be perfect including studying, doing well in school, being friendly, but not too friendly and sitting on a housing council. Later on in the speech, she was elaborating on how she was able to break away from what everyone else was doing and rise above everyone else because of this. She ... The was Quindlen worded siren line made it very apparent that she is trying to spark change. She was stern to get the point across and make people believe she knows what she is talking about and not some random person who doesn t know what they are talking about. The way she described the reason for change was very unique because everyone is always talking about change yet never had an solid ideas on how to do it. Quindlen did, she defined the issue then came up with a solution, I believe that this a big first step in her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Alfred Hitchcock s Elements Of Suspense In Psychodo Busayo Oladipupo Professor K. Lyon Cinema 101 01 Dec 13th, 2017. Final Paper Alfred Hitchcock was a renowned film director known for his elements of suspense and psychological thrillers. His most popular work psycho uses the story of a phoenix secretary (Marion Crane) who embezzled money from a client to unveil the psycho in the male character (Norman Bates). The success of the film is greatly relied on Hitchcock s unique techniques in creating tension and suspense. Elements that contributed to the success of the film include motifs and parallels, and perspective used. The most prominent motifs in psycho are birds, eyes and mirrors. Hitchcock uses birds to support the theme of duality in the film. In one critical scene where Norman ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These instances lead to eyes taking significance in the film, and implicates the audience on the note that the film is showing what should not be seen. Unlike Norman s other victims that were not detailed, Mrs. Bates and Marion s eyes depict a watchful one that threatens Norman therefore leading to their deaths. Mirrors were also used throughout the film to enhance the theme of duality. After Marion stole the money, Hitchcock recurrently compares her with her reflection (like in the used car lot), even though she rarely looks at it. Marion s refusal to look at own reflection in the mirror underscores that she is going to keep going in the path that she has chosen and not look back. Marion s denial of her reflection led her to the Bates Motel where she met with her death. The shift in narration of Psycho has been a topic worth discussing in the world of film making. Most films employ a system of restricted narration, which conveys external events as well as the knowledge, thoughts and feelings of one or two major characters without the intervention of an explicit narrator. But there is a significant shift of narration from restricted to omniscient that Hitchcock used to keep the audience engaged with the film. The early scenes and exposition of the film is focused on Marion. The audience see things from the perspective of Marion her theft, her relationships as an employee and as a woman. Different point of view shots highlights that the film is focused on Marion s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Viva La Vida Coldplay Analysis Throughout history, there have been countless accounts of empires and kingdoms that have fallen due to power and corruption. Kings and rulers, who were once able to break all laws without any consequences, became shadows of their former selves and were forced to be remembered as failures. The song Viva la Vida by Coldplay shows first hand account of a king, Louis XVI, the last monarch of France, who had fallen prey to the destruction that power can bring. Listeners get a memoir of this king who went from being a the pillar of society to a man whose legacy was tarnished by corruption. Absolute power is able to corrupt even the noblest of hearts and, through the use of metaphor, Coldplay has shown the regression of a king who s was thought to have everything a man wants. The narrator is a wealthy king who is used to ruling over others. In the first line of the song Being apart of the monarch, he was born into a life of luxury, never wanting for anything. In the line One minute I held the key we see that he once was able to walk with his head held high, holding all the power to do with as he wished. He was the king and, besides God, there was no one above him. By the line Next the walls were closed on me the narrator shows lines show exactly how far from grace ... As the narrator reflects on his life, he realizes that his empire, the source of his power and wealth, was built on egocentrism and foolishness and destined to collapse because of its weak ... • 5. Short Hills New Jersey Essay Short Hills New Jersey real estate is one of the most sought after for many good reasons, one of them is that it is very close to New York City. In fact, many residents work in Manhattan. It helps a lot that from early on, the village has always had a good connection to the city of New York by means of transportation. The founder of Short Hills New Jersey, a millionaire named Stewart Hartshorn had the vision and foresight to transform his rolling 1,552 acre property into a model village with sophisticated planning. For example, Hartshorn would have a new railroad station built in the Short Hills, in addition to the railroad connection between Hoboken, New Jersey and New York City already in existence. Hartshorn s foresight with regards to Short Hills New Jersey real estate is rather like Bugsy Seagel s transformation of a portion of the Nevada desert into the thriving Las Vegas gambling resort. The only difference is that the former envisioned a peaceful community with plenty of greenery, marked by the so called Short Hills Park that continues to uplift the image of the area to this day. The opening of the Kearney Connection would further boost the value of Short Hills New Jesrey real estate since it would facilitate a direct Manhattan ... While real estate sales are suffering a slump brought about by a depressed U.S. economy, Short Hills New Jersey real estate is still doing moderately well. In Chipped Beef , David Sedaris contrasts his fantasy with his reality to show how living in a fantasy world disconnects you from your family. Throughout his memoir, Sedaris demonstrates how his fantasy disconnects him from his reality, how he portrays his reality in a negative manner, and how he loses his relationship with his family. In the beginning of this memoir Sedaris uses his fantasy to show how disconnected he is from his reality and family by using rhetorical devices and strategies like a mocking tone and analogy. First off, Sedaris describes his unthinkable dreams when he states, I m thinking of asking the servants to wax my change before placing it in the Chinese ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It s important to have clean money. Sedaris starts off this piece by making an extremely improbable statement about waxing his change. This statement is ridiculous because no normal person makes their servants wax their change. In addition, it shows how disconnected he is from reality by making these ridiculous overstatements, which come across as humorous. These humorous statements immediately get the audience engaged in this piece. Furthermore, Sedaris boasts about his fantasy life by using an analogy when he proclaims, Because we are so smart, my parents and I are able to see through people as if they were made of hard, clear plastic. The analogy that Sedaris uses here is very affective by stating how he thinks how smart and intelligent his fantasy family is by making them able to control the rest of the people around them by being able to see through them like clear plastic, which is impossible in reality. • 7. Case Analysis Of Sabmiller The company s strategy of focusing on local brands has produced positive results in terms of volume sales performance in African and Latin American markets. SABMiller s strong presence in Middle East and Africa and Latin America, and high CAGR for the 2013 2018 period, is expected to strengthen its position globally and support its strategy of local branding. In emerging markets, consumer tastes are much more diverse and localised, and SABMiller responds to this via the development of provincial beers where product distribution is limited and illicit trade is significant. SABMiller s significant presence in mid priced and premium lager supports its top ranking position in various African and Latin American markets. However, the company is losing out on the potential growth from other categories and the potential of brand equity to be gained from developing a wider range of beer alternatives. ... • 8. Leon Trotsky Trotsky was born Lev Davidovich Bronstein on November 7, 1879, in what is today known as Ukraine. He was the fifth child of a wealthy farmer, David Leontyevich Bronstein, and Anna Bronstein. The family was ethnically Jewish but not religious. At the age of nine, Trotsky was sent to Odessa to attend school, and as Deutscher points out in his biography, Odessa was then a bustling cosmopolitan port city, very unlike the typical Russian city of the time. Pro Life Pro Choice vs. Pro Life: Abortion Should Remain Legal Jaelyn Evans Atlanta Metropolitan State University The controversy surrounding abortion has been long debated since the Roe v Wade case (1973) as pro life advocates and pro choice advocates go neck to neck on whether the process should be banned or remain legal. According to APA (American Psychological Association), abortion is the medical or surgical termination of a pregnancy and is one of the oldest, most common and most controversial medical procedures . To be Pro Life means to be against the termination of a fetus; one who is not in favor of the practice. Pro life advocates believe a woman should continue the pregnancy and deliver the baby no matter the circumstance. Pro choice represents those who believe the woman deserves a choice to carry the baby or have an abortion. Although the 1973 Roe vs Wade case legalized abortion, abortion is still currently a much heated debate in America as the surgical procedure is possibly on the verge of becoming illegalized. However, abortion should definitely remain legal for various reasons such as individual freedom, victim protection, life opportunities, failed contraception, and it is not fair for the government to make such crucial decisions for a woman s life. Characteristics Of Hernan Cortes During the 1500s Hernan Cortes traveled to the Aztec civilizations of Mesoamerica, and more in particular, Tenochtitlan with the mindset to take on the land of the natives. When he got there, he was uneasy with what he saw, which is evident in the letters that Cortes wrote to Charles V. It happened...that a Spaniard saw an Indian...eating a piece of flesh taken from the body of an Indian who had been killed (Cortes). Cortes viewed the Aztecs living in Tenochtitlan as completely barbaric because they practiced human sacrifice, which was cannibalism and were polytheistic. Despite Cortes describing the people of Tenochtitlan as barbarous , he was able to find positive qualities in them because he saw their knowledge, technological advances, and independence. One way that the Aztecs showed their knowledge was through the design of Tenochtitlan. The people of Tenochtitlan built the city on an island, surrounding a lake. Cortes applauded the Aztecs for this aspect. This great city of Tenochtitlan is built on the salt lake...it has four approaches by means of artificial causeways... (Cortes) This was a smart move for the Aztecs since they had an endless supply of water. Built on an island on Lake Texcoco, it had a system of canals and causeways that supplied the hundreds of thousands of people who lived there (Jarus). Additionally, Cortes admired the new technological advances that the Aztecs invented. Since Tenochtitlan was built overtop of a lake, people of the civilization had to adapt to having a lack of farmland. They created an innovative way to create farmland, called chinampas. The Aztecs made giant reed mats and placed them on top of the water. They made a fence around the mat and placed mud, fertilizer, and rotten vegetables on it. Then trees were planted on all sides of the chinampa. The trees grew very quickly and their roots held the soil to keep it from flowing away. The Aztecs planted corn, tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and squash. The plants roots would grow to the bottom of the lake so they would have an endless supply of water (Tenochtitlan). • 22. Cell Life Cycle Essay Healthy cells within living organisms are constantly undergoing a process that is marked by change called the life cycle of the cell. While every species is different, all cells within them follow close to the same pattern of life and division. As listed in the table above, the steps of the cell life cycle are marked by 1. The first growth phase, 2. A developmental checkpoint, 3. The synthesis of genetic information, 4. A second growth phase, 5. Another developmental checkpoint, and 6. Mitosis, or division into two new cells. The first growth phase is pretty self explanatory: the cell is just beginning its life and must have time and nourishment to develop its organelles. It is twice the length of the G2 phase and will continue until chemical receptors within the cell clear it through step 2, which is the checkpoint. This checkpoint is carried out by the cell s chemical receptors and is a way for the cell to check its surface area and compare that to its volume. If the ratio is where it is supposed to be (these values vary for each cell type and each organism), then the cell will move on to step 3: Synthesis. Step 3 is when a cell will begin to replicate its genetic information, or chromatids. These chromatids are bound together by a protein called a centromere and are collectively known as a chromosome. After the synthesis of genetic information takes place, the cell moves on to stage 4: G2. This phase is where the cell begins to replicate its organelles so that the newly ... Rowling s books were not liked at first, but eventually they became one of the best selling book series and she came out on top. Another individual that fits Ayn Rand s quote is Miley Cyrus. Miley Cyrus is known for a lot of things, especially her being a disney star. At the beginning of her career, she starred on Hannah Montana, a disney channel tv show, and was a popstar as both Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus. Because of Disney Channel s reputation of being mostly a kids tv channel, Miley Cyrus was seen as a kids actor and singer. As she got older, she began to star in movies for teenagers, such as The Last Song, and started to sign more edgy songs. Many people continued to love her not only as an actor, but as a singer too. A few years ago, Miley Cyrus took a huge turn. She started singing in a very different style and dressing in crazy provocative outfits. • 28. Economic Recession In Air Canada However, despite the correct decision to privatize, the company continued to have troubles. The financials of the newly privatized airline were unreflective of the successful stock offerings. Air Canada reported losses of C$74 million in 1990 and C$218 million in 1991, and it reported that it had nearly two million fewer passengers in 1991 than in the previous year. These failures were blamed on the effects of the economic recession and the decrease in travel due to the war in the Persian Gulf. However, it was clear that competition with international carriers was a major cause. To elaborate, the airline industry is considered to be a cyclical industry, meaning that it is directly affected by the business cycle. As such, during times of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One example of this was when there was a major strike in 2002. The federal government quickly intervened in the labour disputes. The reasoning Harper provided was that a shutdown at the country s largest airline at a peak travel time could have taken a toll on the economy. The reaction to this reasoning was quite negative. Air Canada has been accused of relying on the government to intervene instead of attempting to solve the problem with the striking party. The government s involvement in union disputes threatens to make Canadian unionized business uncompetitive, says George Smith, former Air Canada director of employee relations. He states that the idea that the Canadian economy depends on Air Canada operating, is incorrect. Another example of government intervention is bailouts. In 2009, Air Canada made a deal with Ottawa addressing their pension deficit. The government promised to lower mandatory contributions until 2021, allowing the company to ... • 30. Delusion Definition Essay A delusion is a false belief that is resistant to reason. Delusions are often the cause of people s unhappiness in life, because delusions hold people back from living their life to the fullest and being what they were meant to be. The most common delusions are fear of rejection and insecurity in one s self. My own delusion is my insecurity. From when I was a young child, I have always been the bigger friend. I went to a school that predominantly consisted of girls who could eat eight Big Macs and still never gain a pound. These girls knew they themselves were skinny and they made sure those who weren t were picked on. These actions caused me to always second guess myself. Did I look too big in this outfit? • 32. Reflection Paper On Fitness Welcome to Fitness In my life so far, there have been very few instances where I honestly thought about giving up. I like to believe I am a very strong willed and sometimes stubborn person. I also believe everyone has moments where they reach their limit and must decide whether or not to raise the bar. My first day of track practice was one of those moments. I don t believe I fully understood what I was getting myself into that day. I walked through the gym door nervous and filled with a mixture of anxiety and excitement. The first thing I noticed was how many people there were. The entire gym had people circling the perimeter. I mean it was insane. It felt like everyone I had ever known to be in sports was there. People I had never even said a word to had managed find to their way to the gym. I was out of my league and out of my mind. I couldn t do this. I m going to make a fool of myself. Everyone here is conditioned for this and they ve done this before. They know what is going to happen. I was standing there, looking around like an idiot. The first person I recognize and actually talk to is Franky. I attempt to casually sneak my way over to him. I feel like a fish out of water. I decide that if I ever get confused as to what to do I must have a plan. Ask Franky. That was the best I could come up with. The warm ups and stretching weren t so bad. I was left out of breath from the quicker ones, but I felt I would recover in time for the real workout. When coach shouted ... • 35. What Is The Psychological, Social And Cultural Aspects Of... From the time we are born, we are taught the correct way to act within society. We are taught the rules of conduct of society and we learn to follow them in order to be socially normal. The second we are born or even before we are born we are determined a gender. The rest of our life and the way we are expected to act revolves around that gender. Our gender shapes who we are expected to be and shapes an image in our parents head of who they want us to be. Gender plays a key role throughout our life, it is defined as the psychological, social and cultural aspects of masculinity and femininity (butler sweet,c,2017). Masculinity and femininity have been standardized into their own stereotypes. For example, masculine is known as aggression, competitive, brave, etc. While feminine is known as sensitive, weak, nurturing, etc. Because of these traits and these stereotypes masculinity holds a higher power over femininity. Therefore, when the parents have the child and they find out what gender they are they automatically uphold them and raise them according to these standards. This begins to refer to gender socialization which is the process by which we learn the rules and conduct the behavior of masculinity and femininity (butler sweet,c,2017). Meaning, that from a young age, we learn the correct way to act within society, including the correct way to act according to our biological gender.
