This document discusses the process of verbalization for an indoor mobile service robot named CoBot. It defines an environment map with points of interest and edges that connect locations. A route planner uses the map to generate route plans as trajectories between start and finish points through intermediate waypoints. The map is annotated with landmarks. The verbalization algorithm uses the route plan and map annotations to generate explanations of CoBot's path in different styles for users.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
This presentation provides an introduction to quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis and marker-assisted selection (MAS) in plant breeding. The presentation begins by explaining the type of quantitative traits. The process of QTL analysis, including the use of molecular genetic markers and statistical methods, is discussed. Practical examples demonstrating the power of MAS are provided, such as its use in improving crop traits in plant breeding programs. Overall, this presentation offers a comprehensive overview of these important genomics-based approaches that are transforming modern agriculture.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2. The Movie Franchise Star Wars
The movie franchise star wars has been around for over fifty years. It s a classic drama series about
dark and light forces trying to get the best of one another. The Jedi and the Sith are both factions
which use the essences of the universe in order to obtain their special abilities that they use to their
advantage. The force is split between the Jedi who represent the light force, and the Sith who represent
the dark force. So which of the two, light or dark, is the better as seen in the star wars storylines. The
Jedi seem to have the upper hand and here are some reasons why. The Jedi and Sith both use
Lightsabers(Short swords made with laser energy) when fighting enemies or dueling with one another.
They give them both huge advantages in battle, because they can use the force to detect where things
will be before they happen. When they are attacked with a blaster or lightsaber, the laser it is deflected
off of the blade. This also makes for some really spectacular duels between the two.
So which of the two has the better lightsaber? Lightsabers are formed from special crystals which the
Jedi or Sith have to meditate on for weeks on end until it can form a blade. The Sith made the their
sabers with synthetic crystals that they had to put into a furnace whereas the Jedi used a special natural
growing crystal found on Dantooine, Ilum, or the Adega System. When the blades are finally
constructed, they have a certain color which corresponds to their personality. The Sith

3. Wade s Character Changes In Ready Player One By Ernest Cline
In the book Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, the main character, Wade, also known as Parzival in
the OASIS, goes through many character changes such as bad decision making, arrogance, and
friends.
Wade went through many changes in the book due to being in the center of international attention. The
pressure from the world had effects on how Wade made his decisions. These decisions led to
arrogance and bad poor making, which resulted in the loss of loved ones and friends. In the OASIS
you can be anything you want to be but Wade doesn t care about that, he has dedicated his life in
hopes of finding Holidays fortune. When Wade was the first one to find the first out of three keys it
sent him into the international spotlight because he was the first one to find a key. Before obtaining the
key Wade had to play the game against this NPC monster. When Wade won, another person showed
up and was mad that Wade had gotten the key first. Wade explains to this person about how he won, I
used to play Joust all the time against a friend of mine. So I d already had a ton of preparation. I m
sure if you d had as much practice (Cline 94). Wade explains how he go the key and says that
basically I am so awesome look at me and I m the best . This makes Artemis mad. His arrogance has
an effect on him in the future because he ends up becoming friends with Artemis and she has to put up
with his arrogance. Wade was not used to being in the center of international attention, so he thought
he could stand up for all of the avatars in the OASIS and tell off one of the most evil corporations
ever. IOI is a huge evil corporation that is run in a video game called the OASIS. IOI s main focus is
to cheat their way to the prize. Wade decided it was best if he went and told IOI off but he soon
realized he made a the worst decision ever when Sorento said I urge you not to make that mistake.
Your trailer is currently wired with a large quantity of explosives... and my finger is on the detonator.
(Cline 142). Wade thought he could tell of a big evil corporation run in a video game and he was

house and anything in it if. Sorento forced Wade to

4. Women In The House On Mango Street
The theme of a patriarchal society where beauty is a weakness and having too much of it only means
darkness is very prominent in Sandra Cisneros s The House on Mango Street. Esperanza, the
protagonist of the numerous vignettes, highlights how this affects the young women on Mango Street.
The vignette Beautiful and Cruel, conveys the impact it has on Esperanza. In this vignette, Esperanza
feels that she is an ugly daughter and the one nobody cares about (Cisneros 88). She does not need, or
want, a man to lead her life, unlike the women she knows. She does not need, or want, a man to make
decisions for her. Unfortunately, she still feels the pressure to look gorgeous and stunning: Nenny has
pretty eyes and it s easier to talk that way ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Adding to this, it is very common that the father does not want his daughter to be too gorgeous. The
saying all beauty comes with a price goes hand in hand with what the fathers of these girls wish. They
also want their daughters to settle down with a man and have children that just keep coming. Sadly,
this is something society has deemed acceptable, and many young girls are now trying to be what they
know as the stereotype of pretty and perfect. Suddenly, it is all that matters and what they want simply
is not important, they are not able to be their own kind of beautiful. Women and young ladies all over
the world see models, actors, actresses. People who have the so called perfect body and face. A
chiseled abdomen and prominent jaw line for guys. Hair that you can run your hands through.
Flawless smile full of pearly white teeth. A completely flat stomach with a hint of abs for girls. Long,
long legs that go on for miles. Flowing, glossy, shiny hair and a button nose. Big wide eyes. To the
world these features make someone beautiful. In fact, in order to be a Victoria s Secret Runway
Model, you must be at least 5 10. When these young girls, and guys see these superficial people they
assume that they too must look like them. They do not know that these are people who probably starve
themselves, truly experiencing the saying beauty is pain. Beauty should be

5. We Define An Indoor Mobile Robot Essay
We define {it verbalization} as the process by which an autonomous robot converts its own experience
into language. We represent the variations in possible explanations for the same robot experience in
the extit{verbalization space} (VS). Each region in verbalization space represents a different way to
generate explanations to describe its experience, by providing different information as preferred by the
user. In this work the process of verbalization has been discussed for describing our mobile service
robot, CoBot s path. Note that this method can be expanded to other robot s experience as well.
subsection{Environment Map and Route Plan} label{subsec:pathcomp} In order to compute a route
verbalization, the verbalization algorithm requires an environment map with annotations representing
high level locations of interest. We define an indoor mobile robot s map $M = langle P, E angle$ as set
of points $p = (x,y,m) in P$ representing unique locations in our building where m represents the floor
number and the name of the building, and edges $e = langle p_1, p_2, d, t angle in E$ that connect
two points taking time $t$ to traverse distance $d$. Using our map, a route planner produces route
plans as trajectories through our map.
The route plan is composed of a starting point $S$, finish point $F$, an ordered list of intermediate
waypoints $W subset P$, and a subset of edges in $E$ that connect $S$ to $F$ through $W$.
The map is annotated with extit{landmarks}

6. Summer Dance Critique
The group that I have chosen to identify with is the Franklin and Marshall Dance Company. The
company is comprised of over 50 dancers and is supervised by three authoritative professors. Each
fall, new choreographers are recruited by the company to each their choreographies, or reconstruction
works of other choreographers, in the Fall Dance Concert. Each spring, the students have the
opportunity to choreograph their own pieces for the Spring Dance Concert. These student
choreographed pieces either presented in the concert, which runs for three days, or in the Show case,
held only on a Sunday. During the spring choreography, each choreographer contends with the
corresponding choreographers to secure a spot in the concert, which galvanizes competition, hostility,
and tension. Conclusively, however, akin to any other campus organization, we, the members of the
company, share solidarity with each other with regards to certain ideas and acceptable behaviors. ...

mentalities of those who serve as the agents. The notion of compliance creates an inequitable
environment, similar to (identity ambivalence), and gives rise to mechanisms of intergroup expulsion
if the compliance is disobeyed. For example, a dancer I performed with last year for a senior piece
refused to comply with her senior dancer by constantly castigating her style of dance and movements.
She was eventually excluded from the group, in the form of expulsion, and consequently faced both
informal and formal sanctions; informal sanctions by the dancers in the company and formal sanctions

7. Relationship Between Tita And Her Mother
Critically examine the relationship between Tita and her mother and how Tita asserts her authority.
Can Tita be considered a victim or a vanquisher?
In Laura Esquivel s novel Como Agua Para Chocolate Esquivel explores the relationship between a
mother and daughter but presents it in a way that is different from usual mother daughter relationships.
Mama Elena is the chief antagonist in this novel who, instead of loving and caring for her daughter,
tortures the protagonist Tita throughout the novel by prohibiting her from marrying in order to take
care of her until her death. However, Tita does not lose hope as she continuously manages to assert her

Tita s fear and her dislike towards her mother is also clarified in the film when Tita, as a child, hides
behind Nacha s apron as soon as Mama Elena enters the kitchen. Tita s resistance to Mama Elena s
cruel demands are evident again when even after Mama Elena scolds her and orders her to stay away
from Pedro, she is still happy knowing that Pedro still loves her:
Después de estas amenazantes palabras de Mama Elena, Tita procuró estar lo más alejada de Pedro
que pudo. Lo que le fue imposible fue borrar de su rostro una franca sonrisa de satisfacción. Desde ese
momento la boda tuvo para ella otro significado
Tita s thoughts shows how, despite her fear of Mama Elena, she still attempts to gain her right to
marry and she is secretly happy about Pedro marrying Rosaura just to be near her. Despite Mama
Elena s intentions to break Tita s heart by making her watch the person she loves getting married to
her sister, Tita completely changes the meaning of this wedding to something that makes her love for
Pedro grow stronger. This is also portrayed in the film when Tita s smile remains even after Mama
Elena scolds her. The contrast in Mama Elena and Tita s behaviour is conveyed when Tita thinks about
what it would be like to have her mother s strength:
En ese momento pensó en lo bueno que sería tener la fuerza de Mamá Elena. Ella mataba así, de tajo,
sin piedad. Bueno, aunque pensándolo bien, no.

NHS stands for National Health Service.NHS was launched by health secretary Aneurin Bevan(1897
1960) at Park hospital in Manchester on July 5 1948.It was created out of the longheld debate that
good healthcare should be available to all, regardless of their wealth. Before the establishment of
NHS,the provision of healthcare was very limited. The poor people did not have access to healthcare
services as they couldn t afford it and mostly people depended on religious practices to cure their
diseases. Before NHS,one s health was determined by one s wealth as health services were very
expensive.Since its launch in 1948, the NHS has grown to become the world s largest funded health
service provided to all.The main objective of the NHS is to provide standard care to people. For that to
happen, health professional should have certain qualities.Right values and attitude, key
skills, knowledge and strong work ethic are the necessary requirements of a healthcare
professional.Healthcare professionals can also use reflective practices for personal and professional
development in their respective field.Reflective practice is a way of learning from your own personal
experiences and then improve the way you work in your respective field. At the time of its

Throughout the 1920 s, while the economy was stable, there was quite a large unemployment rate.
This allowed many individuals to come up with ways to provide for more jobs and make jobs more
cost effective. One method of this was popularized by Henry Ford known as mass production . This
being created in the 1910 s was brought to its best by henry ford creating more, easier, better paying
jobs for anyone. Mass Production techniques in industries and factories allowed larger numbers of
products to be created more easily with less effort, better wages for employees, and cheaper retail
costs. The most popular method of mass production was the efficient use of the Assembly Line, as
used by Henry Ford and the production of the Model T automobile.

11. Factors Assoicates with Increasing Entrepreneurship in the...
Entrepreneurship in the UAE Overview The UAE has been known to be a pioneer of change,
economic flourishing especially in its openness to foreign direct investments. As of 2011, the share of
the self employed among the employed population is 3%, which is considerably low in comparison to
countries in the region such as Jordan (16%) and Lebanon (35%) (17). Almost 93% of the Emirati
population are working in the public sector 28% of whom are women with the majority being male
employees (17). Another important GCC specific element to put in mind when discussing employment
is the percentage of non nationals who contribute to the working population. This explains why the
majority of entrepreneurs in the UAE are not Emirati nationals (18). With the high number of
employment in the public sector given many incentives such as high salaries, job security, benefits and
flexibility entrepreneurship remains the path less crossed due to the risks involved with taking the
initiative (17). In the UAE, there are three important entities that have a strong influence on the
progress of entrepreneurship and they are the government, the educational institutions, and the private
sector. Another UAE specific element of doing business is the legal bureaucracy that pushes non local
entrepreneurs especially to set up their start ups in the many free zones which in turn require high
business license fees, along with restrictions on the number of visas given (18). The government of the

Violence against women during times of war is something that is very rarely discussed, especially the
violence that was directed towards Vietnamese women during the Vietnam War. Even now there is
discourse surrounding these Vietnamese women, or comfort women as they are called. Today there is
very little officially known about what took place, and what happened to these women. The women
were stolen from their homes, violated, assaulted, and blamed as victims. Their children were
discriminated against, seen as lower class citizens, and forgotten about by their fathers. These women

Since most soldiers left while Vietnam when their Vietnamese children were young, or even still in
utero, they really had nothing linking them to their child. Most of the soldiers had family back home,
so in a sense they did not want a link between them and their child. A child in Vietnam could disrupt a
soldier s life at home. Neither the mother of the child, nor the father really wanted the child that was
created: But neither America nor Vietnam wanted the kids known as Amerasians (Lamb). It was not
very often that a child was created out of mutual love, but even then the child was most likely
unwanted. Not only would that child most likely be discriminated against, but chances are he or she
would not be supported by his or her mother. The mother, who is most likely not being paid for what
she is doing, will have no money to support her child with. The child will most likely starve and have
physical problems due to not receiving enough food and living in poor conditions. Not only that, but
the child will not be well liked. If the child s mother is discriminated against for being a comfort

13. The Importance Of Diversity In The Workplace
Men are 30% more likely to be hired for a high level position job than women (Stutes). Jobs
discriminate and separate genders, races, etc. in a workplace. This is not fair because it should not
matter what you look like or who you are, we should all be treated the same no matter what. It is hard
for someone to get a job because bosses can discriminate and that makes people not succeed. You
should have to work towards the higher level position so you earn it and not just be given it because
you are the gender the boss wants. Diversity should be acknowledged so everyone can have a chance
to make a living and support their families. Companies need to be fair and treat everyone equally and
not just by looks. Diversity means that everyone works together no matter what race, culture, gender
they are. Workplaces should have diversity taken place in them so they succeed and people have to
work with others no matter what. It shouldn t be about the looks or beliefs, it s about supporting your
family and working together to create one goal. Diversity is becoming a big part of our world and it
should continue as companies are growing and hiring. 67% of bosses and job seekers seek for diverse
workplaces (Stutes). That still leaves room for 33% of bosses that are against having diverse workers.
This shows that companies are against a certain race and gender. That should not be present.
Continuing, diverse workplaces provide families with the money they need to survive.

14. The Causes Of Drug Misuse And Research
There are many causes of drug misuse and research has in fact shown that it is rarely the case that only
one factor indeed caused the individual to seek illicit drugs (Boys et al., 2000). Research from Boys et
al. (2000) shows the most common reasons for drug use amongst young people with 96.7% of the
participants use drugs to relax; 96.4% to become intoxicated or get a buzz ; 95.9% to aid socialisation;
and 86.8% to alleviate a depressed mood. These results show that the most common cause of drug use
is to relax, this could be to escape the stresses of daily life, whether it be family issues or even the
extreme of homelessness (Mallett et al., 2005). Mallett et al. continues to say that young people who
are homeless are statistically much more likely to begin taking drugs than the home based peers. Their
study consisting of 302 homeless young people showed that 12.5% of the participants began using
drugs as a result of becoming homeless and feeling like they needed it to act as an escape from the
struggles in their lives. Another major cause of drug use is family breakdown, violence and abuse;
these three areas are suggested to be the cause of many problems in young people s lives which
ultimately often lead to them using drugs (Department of Human Services, 1998). Blended families
are becoming much more of the social norm in modern society, and it is also advocated that some
young people may be driven to drugs through their relationship breakdown with families,

Immediately after World War II, another war emerged from the horizon. The Cold War, a battle for
both political and military superiority between the Soviet Union and the United States, began soon
after World War II, with Vietnam as a central issue. Vietnam, bordered by China, Laos, and Cambodia,
became a colony of the French in the late 1800s, who exploited the locals for raw material, such as tin,
rubber, and oil. They justified imperialism by insisting that they were protecting the Vietnamese and

forcing the Americans to intervene if democracy was to prevail over communism. As the Red pressure

When it became clear that Bao Dai could not expel the communists, the United States decided to

16. Grit By Angela Angele Duckworth Analysis
Being Grit and Growth Mindset is the Key to Success Angela Lee Duckworth states: Grit is related
because part of what it meant to be gritty is to be resilient in the face of failure or adversity. As she
said, grit is being positive to response failure. Angela Lee Duckworth is an American author. In the
article Grit, which is written is written by Angela Lee Duckworth in 2003. She introduces her research
that shows the relationship between grit and achievement, and the importance of helping students
develop grit. By reading the article The Significance of Grit, it was touched me deeply. For me, I am
Chinese, but my family moved to Kazakhstan. For those unknown country, language, culture I was
very baffled, but I overcome those difficulties; therefore being grit and having growth mindset lead me
to success. In the article The Significance of Grit she states grit has two components; passion and
perseverance. Passion means a strong feeling or emotion to someone s job they are doing.
Perseverance means no matter how difficult it is people are keep trying doing it, and never give up.
We can read the article The Significance of Grit that The most successful people in life are both
talented and gritty in whatever they ve chosen to do (Duckworth p17) Then she mentioned about when
people emphasized talent; will become nothing. I totally agree with her. When people make an effort

17. Red Death Allegory
The Masque Of The Red Death is an allegory that explains that people are sometimes greedy and
selfish. The first symbol is the seven rooms. I think that is a symbol because each room has a different
color and has very different decor. The rooms start out as blue, purple, green, violet, white, and the last
is blood red. I think that the rooms symbolize the different stages in which you go through when you
die. In the story nobody wants to enter the last room because it reminds them of the Red Death. The
second symbol I chose was the Masquerade held by the Prince and everyone he brought to the castle
was invited. Everyone was having a good time and most of the costumes were very creepy and scary.
After a while people started to notice that there

18. Florida’s Incompetent Capital Punishment System
Many times when watching television, we see horrible news about a crime committed, which is most
likely is not in self defense. The first thing that comes to our minds; this person is going to receive the
death penalty. First degree murder triggers our emotions to see justice. Even in a country where
everyone is innocent until proven guilty, we are quick to pass judgment and convict the suspect in
question. With technology so advanced in the United States where we can receive the news even into
our phones, many times the accused do not received a fair trial. On the other hand, the incompetence
of lawyers has created great doubt on the delivery of justice. Additionally, by eliminating the capital

Supporters believe murder for murders is the only way to bring justice, and people would consider the
analogy before committing these types of crimes. Supporters of the capital punishment system penalty
argue that when enforced, the death penalty saves lives. The fault placed into the opposing side for
using the system with new trials to postpone execution. The problem with that argument is that in
Florida, a total of twenty five death row prisoners had been released due to erroneous convictions and
were able to prove innocence, not a strong argument when lives are at risk. Meanwhile, the police
department is facing budget cuts because the state of Florida is facing a deficit of billions of dollars.
At this moment, budget cuts are affecting all government departments not only the police Department,
but also fire department and education are also been affected. Fifty one million dollars is the cost to
enforce death penalty in Florida. If the death penalty is eliminated, would be a savings of eleven
millions would be saved just in specialist lawyers for death penalty cases. Imagine allocating eleven
million dollars just in the police department for crime prevention. Supporters of the death penalty will
argue that life in prison is not enough to bring the much needed justice to the families of the victims.

19. Social And Cultural Impact On The World
The world we live in, is a world filled with different kinds of people in many terms such as race,
gender, etc. This generation has become more open to change and culture due to globalization. The
development of social and cultural has been a huge issue in some parts of the world especially USA.
Therefore, people have to respect and accept each other s culture because we all share the same world
and to make a change in this world you have to change yourself first. Be better of who you are before
you judge try to improve the world because by changing yourself it can affect other people as small
things will affect and lead to bigger change and improvements. Privilege is an unearned power
enjoyed by a dominant group, giving them economic political, social and cultural advantages at the
expense of members of a marginalized group. It exist when the dominant group has something of
value that is denied to others simply because of the groups they belong to, rather than because of
anything they ve done or failed to do (page 23). It is usually invisible to people who have it because
they think that it is a personal matter and that they have earned them. People in dominant groups are
frequently unaware that they are members of the dominant group due to the privilege of being able to
see themselves as persons rather than stereotypes which is why they also want to hang on to their
privilege. Unlike the marginalized group, they often experienced the disadvantages of not having

20. Emily Grierson Patriarchy
Throughout the history of society, specifically during the years prior to the era of feminism, people
have place women as the weaker gender. In literature , there have been many instances where women
have been outshined and neglected by men because their works or contribution s are deemed to be
inferior and noncompliant in the eyes of men. Men are seen as autocratic ruler of a household and thus
they feel it s their responsibility to constantly overlook and protect women due to their inferiority that
society has placed on them, as a result, men feel superior to women. Nevertheless, men are not
mindful of the effects and outcomes of their patriarchal domination on women: depression, losing
touch of reality, isolation, and worst of all, losing their sanity. An example in literature that displays
this type of structure of society where women can become victims of patriarchal conditions takes
place in the short stories A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner and The Yellowpaper by Charlotte
Perkins Gilman. Both women, the main character Emily Grierson from Faulkner s story and the
narrator from Gilman s story, though they have different circumstances, are similar in a unique way as
they are both held back by the male figures in their households within the patriarchal society, and as a
result, they lose touch within each of their societies and are forced to insanity. Feminists have
described patriarchy as a system of oppression to women. Second wave feminists, who

21. Argument On Divine Command Theory
Divine Command Theory: (When employing the DCT in an argument, you must always cite a specific
source ie. scripture, doctrine etc. to validate your claim.) Type information here. Divine command
theory is a theory that believes that what is willed by God is morally right. Another portion of this is
that in order for a belief to be morally right a knowledge of God is required. This knowledge of God
being required can be seen as a weakness due to atheists and agnostics not being able to be morally
right. Some of the more notable philosophers that brought about various forms of divine
commandment Theory have been Saint Augustine, John Calvin, and William of ockham. A prime
example of divine command theory in modern practice is The Ten Commandments among Christians.
The Ten Commandments are from the Old Testament in the Bible and are a basic set of rules to follow.
This basic set of rules that was set forth by the divine is commonly what this theory is based on. Self
Interest (Egoism): Type information here. There are two basic kinds of egoism, there is ethical egoism
and there is psychological egoism. These two different forms of egoism are different because ethical
egoism is the normative ethical position that what is moral is to be done in self interest. This is
different from psychological egoism which states specifically that people will only act in their own
self interest. Ethical egoism is broken up into two forms. There is act egoism and Rule egoism. Act

Music Essay
Have you ever been listening to the radio and a really good song comes on? When this happens to me,
I pause for a moment to gather my breath before I belt out each lyric with perfect tone deftness. One
of these songs is Katy Perry s Unconditionally , and I am going to argue that is better than her other
songs, such as Waking Up in Vegas , for the following three reasons. First, the music is more complex
than her usual upbeat pop style. Second, Katy Perry sounds more mature and beautiful in
Unconditionally , but comes off as silly and girly in Waking Up in Vegas . Finally, the overall message
of Unconditionally is more deep, and is more meaningful than Waking Up in Vegas s message.

almost black hair and wears more subtle makeup. The key is contrast, according to Christie Wilcox of

skin, making her look more feminine and more like an adult, and less like an adult trying to look like a

23. The Ongoing Debate Over the Use of Stem Cells Essay
In the past two decades, many technological and scientific advances have been made in order to make
life easier for many people who suffer from cancer, disease and sickness. Among these advances there
is something revolutionary called stem cells. Stem cells can help restore and regenerate almost all
parts of the human body such as the heart, kidney, liver, and many other organs. Although stem cells
offer a lot, there are many views against and for stem cells, and among these views lies the debate of
whether stem cells should be legalized or not (NIH 2). Stem cells offer exciting new opportunities in

In order to get stem cells from embryos, the embryo must be destroyed, and many people view this as
killing a human, making it immoral. These embryonic cells can be given different tasks such as
making a specific organ, and this is how different body parts can be made. Stem cells have been
published in newspapers since 1998, but no institute or company invested money or time into stem
cells until 2001, when the Canadian Institute of Health Sciences decided to fund the research of stem
cells. Stem cells have three general properties, which are being capable of dividing and renewing for
long periods, they have to be unspecialized, and they have to be able to give rise to specialized cells
(NIH 3). Stem cells are unspecialized cells in embryos and umbilical cords that can be modified using
signals in order to make specialized cells which then have the ability form into various different body
parts such as livers, kidneys, hearts, and other major organs. The process of when an unspecialized
stem cell turns into a specialized stem cell is called differentiation (NIH 1). In order for unspecialized
stem cells to become specialized, one of the two types of signals should be used. The first signal is
called internal. Internal signals occur inside a cell by its own genes, which are encoded on strands of
DNA. The second signal is called external and this is possible with external support such as
chemicals, physical contact, or other molecules in the

The story of the monopoly of oil by the Standard Oil Trust is one of the more dramatic storylines in
the history of the U.S. economy. This monopoly on oil occurred at a time when the United States was
in the middle of a transformation from an agricultural society to the greatest industrial economy the
world has ever seen. The effects of the Standard Oil monopoly on the U.S., and the world, were
immeasurable, and the lessons that can be learned from this incredible story are as applicable today as
they were a hundred years ago (www.linfo.org, 2004).
John D. Rockefeller founded the Standard Oil Trust in 1870 in Cleveland Ohio, the oil refining mecca
of the time. The trust almost immediately began using a variety of cutthroat techniques to acquire or
destroy competitors and thereby consolidate the oil industry. Some techniques used by Standard Oil
were to temporarily undercut the prices of their competitors, creating secret deals with the railroad
companies to gain a cheaper shipping rate for its oil, and acquiring a majority of the pipelines needed
to transport the un refined oil to the refinery. By 1878 Rockefeller and his company had gained control

30. Duality Of The Mind In Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde

Mr. Schmid
English 10
October 21th
One Body, Two Minds
Is someone s appearance an accurate definition of who they are? Do people s circumstances affect the
way they interact with themselves and others? Are we products of our environments? Arguably, it is
human nature to be shaped and formed by our surroundings, to be changed by our environments in
ways that we may not expect. The same can be seen in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, novella written by
Robert Louis Stevenson, and Psycho, a film directed by the renowned Alfred Hitchcock. The basis of
both stories is the duality of the mind, and how society molds the alter personality. Thus, in both Dr.
Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Psycho, Robert Louis Stevenson and Alfred Hitchcock use diction and
symbolism to illustrate how society shapes an individual s mind, leading to the creation of two
personalities.
Robert Louis Stevenson uses diction in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to show how Dr. Jekyll s mind was
molded by the strict moral standards of the 18th century Victorian society. Dr. Jekyll is described as a
respectable and important man in society; he is viewed by the people around him as reputable and
holds high regard for his fellowmen. On the surface, Dr. Jekyll seems like a morally upstanding ...

31. A Modest Proposal By Jonathan Swift
Satire has the ability to point out societal inadequacy and ridicule political policies in a way that is
humorous in its absurdity while masking its true intent. In A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift, the
author s use of exaggeration and irony to draw attention to the meaningless lives of the Irish people to
English rule not only gives his work a wider audience but also serves as a furtherment of Swift s
typical derisiveness. A Modest Proposal comments on the harm caused by the Declaratory Act of
1720, an act that allowed Great Britain s parliament to legislate over Ireland with no input from the
Irish House of Lords, leaving Ireland in severe economic distress. Swift contrasts his calm yet harsh
criticism of English politics and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In keeping with this style, Swift assured that the reader would look deeper into his work than the
surface meaning. While lacing his work with an old, familiar style Swift injected his own unique flair
in his pamphlet as well. In A Modest Proposal paragraphs frequently start with sympathetic, almost
dreamlike, idealizations and end, metaphorically, with a knife to the gut. Swift entices the reader with
his sympathetic voice then delivers such biting wit the reader is stunned and taken aback. Another
trick used by Swift is a redirection technique. Major points are intentionally separated to redirect
readers to Swift s important views and enforce his ideas. In A Modest Proposal Swift uses the end of
the pamphlet to restate all previous notions. This gives the reader not only a refresher but another
chance to analyze the true meaning. A Modest Proposal is obviously a satiric work, but it s Swift s use
of satire that makes his work effective, particularly his combination of political and societal satire
leaving none of the intended audience unscathed. Swift agrees with the bourgeoisie class so
vehemently that it becomes noticeably sarcastic. He maintains the calm demeanor of the narrator
making the faked emotions cold and insincere. Swift states, ... that horrid practice of women

the ability to adapt and survive, showing that they have the ability to think of when they are ill, or feel
pain. Animals have the ability to survive illness and changing environments. If animals only acted on
mechanism, then they would exacerbate illness causing their demise, or they would fail to adapt to the

conclusion, this paper has explained Descartes view on bodies and animals, and analyzed whether
Descartes believed that animals had minds. Explanation of Descartes view of minds and bodies has
been provided, indicating that he believed that the mind and body were tightly jointed , as well as, his
view of how the body would act without a mind. From these explanations, we have been able to
conclude and explain why that Descartes would believe that animal do have minds. References
