How Does The BBC Radio1Breakfast
Show Reach andTarget Audiences and
Encourage AudienceParticipation
Presented by Aimee, Billy, Grace, Hannah , Thilu and Luke
GENERALFACTS
 The 6am to 9am part of the day is important because it draws in
listeners and the station hopes to entice them to listen over a long
period.
 Radio 1’s Breakfast Show say that tools like Twitter, Facebook and
Tumblr are a game changer and now enable a greater audience
engagement- having a conversation with your audience is clearly
important.
 Since Nick Grimshaw took over Chris Moyles, Radio 1 Breakfast Show
had lost 500,000 listeners within a year. This isn’t because of Nick
Grimshaw, it is just how young people’s listening habits are changing.
SOCIAL
MEDIA
 Radio 1’s Breakfast Show say that tools like Twitter and Facebook are
a game changer and now enable a greater audience engagement.
Having a conversation with your audience is clearly very important
and the BBC understand this.
YouTube:
BBC radio one offers an extensive range of YouTube videos,
which help their radio show reach different target audiences.
They feature celebrities who appeal to all ages and genders to
encourage people to listen in and watch. Someone like Harry
Styles is more likely to target a younger generation audience,
whereas someone like David Walliams would appeal to an older
audience. It is to ensure that they are reaching out to everyone,
so that they have a mainstream audience and not a niche one.
SOCIA
L
MEDIA
Instagram:
BBC radio 1 use their Instagram as another social media
platform to reach target audiences. They upload pictures of
upcoming celebrities who will be featuring on the show, in order
to show audiences in advance who is going on the show. In
addition to this, Instagram further has short video previews or
clips from the show, which is another way of encouraging the
audience to listen and join in.
REGULAR
SLOTS
Competitions – Nick Grimshaw advertising competitions to draw in
listeners from people who wouldn’t normally listen as they want to win
whatever is up for grabs.
Celebrity appearances – Celebrity friends of Nick Grimshaw frequently
appear with him on the show to advertise anything they want to. This
also brings in listeners for Radio 1 of fans of the interviewee wanting to
hear them.
Games with Celebrities – Nick Grimshaw plays games with is guests to
try to get audiences interested and wants the audience to watch the
Breakfast show in clips on the BBC 1 website as well as on the Radio.
Audience recommending music – Through social media and audience
participation, people can recommend music and different songs to Nick
Grimshaw. This encourages people to interact with the show as they
want their song to play the most.
GIVEAWAYS  Billy
FILLERS
Social Media Plugs: Nick Grimshaw commonly like to read out posts from
social media like Twitter to encourage audience participation as the
audience wants to get their voices heard by everyone listening so tweet
to Nick Grimshaw on what they think about the show.
Clips from upcoming songs: On the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast show, Nick
Grimshaw likes to announce the upcoming songs that are soon to be
played to get the audiences excited about them. This also brings in
audiences and keeps listeners hooked. If a listener hears a song they
like will be played soon, they will stay listening to hear the song.
GUESTS  Thilu
MUSIC
 Radio 1 aims to effect a wide and diverse number of demographics
with the music it plays. The Top 6 genres decided by listeners were
Mainstream, Dance, Boy/Girl Band, Rap, Indie/Rock and R&B. This
therefore attracts the largest demographics of Mainstream chart music
but also attracts smaller and more niche audiences / groups such as
Rock and Indie.
 From the graph bellow, we can see that music played on different
radio stations reminds listeners of Radio 1 drastically more than other
commercial radio stations. This provides free publicity and advertising
for Radio 1, bringing in listeners from other commercial Radio stations
to Radio 1.
Spin OFFS
 The Radio 1 Big Weekend: Every year in May, Radio 1 hold their Radio 1
Big Weekend, a BBC hosted Radio 1 festival spanning a few days to show
of young and upcoming stars and fan favourites. This year however, BBC
Radio are holding the BBC Radio Biggest Weekend. This is different to the
normal Big weekend as it is larger , involving BBC Radio 1 as well as BBC
2, BBC 3 and BBC 6. It is also held if 4 different locations (Belfast, Perth,
Swansea and Coventry). This rebranding and expansion of the big
weekend will bring it larger audiences from different backgrounds and
expand the demographic for the BBC music festivals.
 Tickets for the festival cost £18 per person (+£4.50 booking fee) for a day
ticket for one event location. Children aged 2 years and under do not
require a ticket and will be permitted to attend for free when accompanied
by an adult aged 18+. This will attract families to come together as tickets
are relatively cheap for a festival and you don’t have to pay for any young
children, attracting the family demographic.
Appearances
 Nick Grimshaw is directly linked with The BBC 1 Breakfast show. This
means whenever you look up Nick Grimshaw on Social media, you
are advertised Radio 1 campaigning. Due to this point, whenever you
see / hear Nick Grimshaw in other forms of media , you immediately
associate him with BBC 1 radio, therefore creating free advertising for
the BBC 1 Breakfast show.
