3. WHY CHOOSE RADIO 1?
Our primary audience (young adults) tend to also be the primary audience to this
station, this would make Radio 1 an ideal station to reach the attention of our target
audience . Although the station specializes in the broadcasting of new and popular
music there is a part of the show called ‘NewsBeat’, this is the flagship news
programme that is also on BBC Radio 1xtra. Unlike other news programmes its focus
is to provide news tailored for younger audiences. Therefore making the station even
more suitable as they can not only attract my target audience with popular music
but also inform them of topical issues in society, which could advertising our
documentary on the topical issue of binge drinking in teens and whether the legal
drinking age is suitable for todays young culture. The station was ordered to bring
the average age of its listeners down from 32 by the BCTrust which said it should be
trying to win over 15 to 29 year olds. The longest serving radio 1 breakfast presenter
Chris Moyle's aged 42 was then replaced with Nick Grimshaw in aid of this, however
even with this change loyal older views to Chris Moyle's still persist to listen in to the
radio station,This is beneficial to me and my group as we can also reach our
secondary audience (adults and parents) who may find or topic interesting.
