The computer as we know it today had its beginning with a 19th century English mathematics professor name Charles Babbage. He designed the Analytical Engine and it was this design that the basic framework of the computers.
8. The First Generation
• The first computers used vacuum tubes for
circuitry and magnetic drums for memory, and
were often enormous, taking up entire rooms.
9. The Second Generation
• • Transistors replaced vacuum tubes and
ushered in the second generation of
computers.
• • One transistor replaced the equivalent of 40
vacuum tubes.
10. The Third Generation
• • The development of the integrated circuit
was the hallmark of the third generation of
computers.
11. The Fourth Generation
• • The microprocessor brought the fourth
generation of computers, as thousands of
integrated circuits were built onto a single
silicon chip.
12. The Fifth Generation
• Based on Artificial Intelligence (AI).
• There are some applications, such as voice
recognition, that are being used today.

16. Keyboard
• A computer keyboard is defined as the set of
typewriter-like keys that enables you to enter
data into a computer or other devices.
Computer keyboards are similar to
electric-typewriters but contain additional
typing keys.
17.
18. Types of Keyboard
• There are two major types of computer
keyboards:
– Basic and Extended.
19. Basic Keyboard
• The Basic keyboard contains 104 keys and is enough to
perform all the functions that can be done on a Windows PC.
20. Extended keyboard
• The Extended keyboard may have additional keys, and the
design varies among the companies manufacturing them.
These are usually customized keyboards that are specific to
certain operating systems or applications.
21. • The best example, for Extended keyboards, is
the Windows 8 keyboard designed by
Microsoft for use with its first “start screen”
operating system
