Purpose: adjectives are words that modify nouns.
We use comparative adjectives to:
• compare two things
• show change

How we form comparative adjectives depends generally on:
• the number of syllables in the adjective.

We usually add “er”

We usually double the consonant:

If a two-syllable adjective ends in a consonant and “y”, we change
the “y” to “i” and add “er”:
busy: busier
noisy: noisier

With some adjectives with 2 or more syllables, you can:
• add “r” or “er” OR
• use “more” or “less”

Irregular Forms:
Some comparative adjectives have irregular forms. This means they
don’t follow the rules.
far farther/further
bad: worse

Using “than”:
The easiest way to use comparative adjectives in a sentence is to use
“than”. Here is a common pattern:
[Noun A] + [be or another linking verb] +
[comparative adjective] + than + [Noun B].
